Episode overview

What if the thing holding your business back is not your product, but the conversation you keep avoiding? In this episode, recorded ahead of The Influencers 2026, Anthony Perl sits down with Aaron Smith and Andrew Cominos, the two sales operators behind the new membership Sell Mates. They call themselves your professional idiots, and they are on a mission to change how business owners feel about selling. Their definition is refreshingly simple: sales is a conversation with a pathway and an outcome. The problem, they say, is not that people cannot sell. It is that nobody wants to be a salesperson.

Key talking points

  • Why they describe themselves as your professional idiots, and why that honesty is the whole brand
  • Sales as a conversation with a pathway and an outcome, and why people fear being a salesperson more than they fear selling
  • The $5,000 day problem: paying to sit in a room and spending half of it being upsold to the next package
  • The Sell Mates promise: no pitch, no upsell, and a doing session rather than a talk about doing session
  • Go get a duck: why action beats waiting for every duck to line up in a row
  • Consistency over epic: fixing the feast and famine cycle instead of chasing the million dollar month
  • Why 96% of small businesses fail in their first ten years, and what that says about who is advising them
  • Business can be lonely and sales can be hard, and why community is the fix for both

About Aaron Smith and Andrew Cominos

Aaron Smith and Andrew Cominos are the founders of Sell Mates, a new membership built for business owners who are good at what they do but winging the selling. Aaron is the founder of Morphability, a growth consultancy, and he has spent decades leading sales for technology businesses across Australia and New Zealand. Andrew is the founder of Project Remarkable, a men's performance coaching practice, and he learned sales the hard way, knocking on strangers' doors before training around 500 staff at Godfreys and then building his own sales business. They met at an event and spent two hours talking, and they have been building together ever since. Sell Mates is a sponsor of The Influencers 2026, and their founding event runs in Sydney on Tuesday 1 December 2026.

The Influencers 2026

The Influencers 2026 is one morning in Sydney: Wednesday 7 October 2026, 8.30am to 12.00pm, Northside Conference Centre, Crows Nest. Speaker:

Anthony Perl: Influences

Speaker:

Conversation, and this is one with

Speaker:

two self-confessed professional idiots,

Speaker:

Aaron Smith and Andrew Kominos

Speaker:

from Sellmates, spelt with an S,

Speaker:

influencing how businesses sell.

Speaker:

Now we get into what holds people

Speaker:

back and how to move forward.

Speaker:

Their brand is built on fun

Speaker:

and directness.

Speaker:

They're unashamedly themselves, so

Speaker:

just listen in.

Speaker:

Apologies for the language.

Speaker:

They are the perfect fit as sponsors

Speaker:

of the Influencers 2026, and along the

Speaker:

way, they show the power of podcasting

Speaker:

by not selling, just demonstrating the

Speaker:

influence you can have by being you.

Speaker:

So let's become influential.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Well, we're going to get underway with

Speaker:

a special episode of our Podcast Done

Speaker:

For You show and the Influencers

Speaker:

sub-special, and underneath that,

Speaker:

we're gonna talk to two people who

Speaker:

are cellmates.

Speaker:

Uh, that's the best way to describe

Speaker:

the two of you.

Speaker:

Uh, Aaron and Andrew, welcome

Speaker:

to the podcast.

Speaker:

Aaron & Andrew: Thank you very much.

Speaker:

Thank you very much.

Anthony Perl:

Well, I suppose we've

Anthony Perl:

got to get underway by letting you

Anthony Perl:

introduce yourselves to the audience.

Anthony Perl:

The way I like to do it is to put

Anthony Perl:

it in the context of saying, well,

Anthony Perl:

the Influencers is all about how

Anthony Perl:

you want people to perceive you.

Anthony Perl:

So with that in mind, what

Anthony Perl:

is it that you will emphasize

Anthony Perl:

in wanting to introduce yourselves

Anthony Perl:

to the audience?

Anthony Perl:

So who's gonna kick off?

Anthony Perl:

Aaron & Andrew: We're your

Anthony Perl:

professional idiots.

Anthony Perl:

So, yeah I love that.

Anthony Perl:

That's exactly right.

Anthony Perl:

Professional.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah, no, can't say that one.

Anthony Perl:

There's offensive, and then there's

Anthony Perl:

like- Probably shouldn't

Anthony Perl:

… probably shouldn't.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah, no, we are, we are definitely your

Anthony Perl:

professional idiot, and that is the best

Anthony Perl:

way to sum us up.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, what, what are you though, mate?

Anthony Perl:

Like, we, we aren't actually one human

Anthony Perl:

being- No, we're not … surprisingly.

Anthony Perl:

You, you are the, you are one

Anthony Perl:

half of Something to Say Sunday.

Anthony Perl:

Um, the, the short answer here is we,

Anthony Perl:

we are, we- You are … have been, I, I am

Anthony Perl:

a person who's been in, in and around

Anthony Perl:

sales for donkey's years, from I think

Anthony Perl:

12 and 13, walking around the streets,

Anthony Perl:

uh, you know, convincing people

Anthony Perl:

to let me wash their cars or mow lawns

Anthony Perl:

or whatever the hell it was at that time.

Anthony Perl:

I'm very much out there talking

Anthony Perl:

to people.

Anthony Perl:

I love watching people do

Anthony Perl:

different things.

Anthony Perl:

And that's awkward too, just I love

Anthony Perl:

watching the evolution of people

Anthony Perl:

as they go through their sales journey

Anthony Perl:

and their business growth journey.

Anthony Perl:

Um, I run a business currently, uh,

Anthony Perl:

that walks into businesses and

Anthony Perl:

help them get out of their own way

Anthony Perl:

effectively and, and enable their

Anthony Perl:

success, build growth and sales

Anthony Perl:

engines, and I, I just love this shit.

Anthony Perl:

This is one of the greatest

Anthony Perl:

things that you could possibly do.

Anthony Perl:

Um, and, and I, I know there are a

Anthony Perl:

percentage of people who just hate it,

Anthony Perl:

but, but I f- I fucking love it.

Anthony Perl:

They're wrong.

Anthony Perl:

They're wrong.

Anthony Perl:

They are wrong.

Anthony Perl:

They need to love it.

Anthony Perl:

They should.

Anthony Perl:

They're incorrect in life.

Anthony Perl:

They are incorrect in life.

Anthony Perl:

That's me in a nutshell.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, I'm, uh, Andrew.

Anthony Perl:

I'm Darren.

Anthony Perl:

I'm Darren.

Anthony Perl:

That's it.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, so I'm, uh… So I've been in

Anthony Perl:

sales for-- since I was eighteen.

Anthony Perl:

I've, you know, I've been, you know, the

Anthony Perl:

national trainer, director of sales,

Anthony Perl:

all the thing for multinationals, and

Anthony Perl:

then I came into small business.

Anthony Perl:

Wound up thirty-six kilos overweight in

Anthony Perl:

a toxic relationship with myself, my

Anthony Perl:

business, and, uh, my, my wife, uh,

Anthony Perl:

well, my fiancée at the time.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, and then, um, I, uh, split

Anthony Perl:

up with that person, and then

Anthony Perl:

I sold my business at the time.

Anthony Perl:

I went on my own little, what I

Anthony Perl:

used to call a healing journey,

Anthony Perl:

uh, but now a congruency journey.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, and I became, uh, I put the

Anthony Perl:

thousands of hours of personal

Anthony Perl:

development I had done in my life

Anthony Perl:

into practice, and I became a

Anthony Perl:

performance coach for, um, high-level

Anthony Perl:

men in business, and so I've been doing

Anthony Perl:

that for a while.

Anthony Perl:

And then the, the, in the world, the

Anthony Perl:

universe, whatever you wanna call it,

Anthony Perl:

just kept putting like sales work

Anthony Perl:

and fractional sales work just in

Anthony Perl:

front of me, just kept slapping me

Anthony Perl:

in the face with it, no matter how

Anthony Perl:

much I avoided it.

Anthony Perl:

And, um, I just realized that

Anthony Perl:

there was something here that needed

Anthony Perl:

to be done for other people.

Anthony Perl:

And my thing is just how do I empower,

Anthony Perl:

or how do I… I just wanna fucking

Anthony Perl:

bring joy to people.

Anthony Perl:

Actually, is that… It's like

Anthony Perl:

I was gonna say, how people be

Anthony Perl:

their best self.

Anthony Perl:

But actually, all I want is just to

Anthony Perl:

bring joy to people.

Anthony Perl:

All right.

Anthony Perl:

And I think there's a lot of, in the

Anthony Perl:

world right now, there's a lot of

Anthony Perl:

necessa- necessity for joy comes from

Anthony Perl:

not just knowing how to bring joy

Anthony Perl:

to yourself, but more importantly

Anthony Perl:

also, not more importantly, but

Anthony Perl:

also knowing how to generate the

Anthony Perl:

life you actually truly want.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

And people don't realize that that

Anthony Perl:

comes from sales.

Anthony Perl:

I mean, I was saying last night, uh, who

Anthony Perl:

was I saying it to?

Anthony Perl:

You know, I've built ev- I've built

Anthony Perl:

multiple businesses at this point, and

Anthony Perl:

every single time in multiple different

Anthony Perl:

industries, service, product,

Anthony Perl:

doesn't matter.

Anthony Perl:

Every time I've gone from zero to

Anthony Perl:

six, multiple six figures in less

Anthony Perl:

than twelve months.

Anthony Perl:

Not because I'm so amazing, just

Anthony Perl:

because, you know, like Seth

Anthony Perl:

Godin says, um-

Anthony Perl:

Everyone booking to get their

Anthony Perl:

ducks in a row.

Anthony Perl:

I just go get a fucking duck.

Anthony Perl:

The way I look at it is I'm not

Anthony Perl:

saying that from an ego point of view

Anthony Perl:

like I'm amazing.

Anthony Perl:

I'm saying that like I'm retarded,

Anthony Perl:

so if I can do it, you should

Anthony Perl:

be able to do it.

Anthony Perl:

You know what I mean?

Anthony Perl:

So s- so for me, um, I just became

Anthony Perl:

a, a… My thing is performance and, uh,

Anthony Perl:

you know, being your best self at the

Anthony Perl:

highest level, but also, uh, selling

Anthony Perl:

and just bringing joy to people.

Anthony Perl:

So I run a couple of companies, Project

Anthony Perl:

Remarkable, um, uh, and, uh, Remarkable

Anthony Perl:

Rooms, which connect-- which

Anthony Perl:

is a high-level connection,

Anthony Perl:

uh, agency.

Anthony Perl:

Those place thing-- Those two

Anthony Perl:

businesses are very, very invite only.

Anthony Perl:

And so the brilliant thing about what

Anthony Perl:

we're gonna talk about, which is

Anthony Perl:

SellMates, which you mentioned before,

Anthony Perl:

is it's just mates.

Anthony Perl:

It's for everyone.

Anthony Perl:

It's for everyone.

Anthony Perl:

It's for literally everyone and

Anthony Perl:

everyone.

Anthony Perl:

Bo-both in our business, and

Anthony Perl:

my, my business Morphability is

Anthony Perl:

very much the same.

Anthony Perl:

It-- There are only a… You know,

Anthony Perl:

you-you're at a certain maturity

Anthony Perl:

level or at a certain size scale

Anthony Perl:

or whatever, where you can afford

Anthony Perl:

our services.

Anthony Perl:

It's not designed as a… You know, you

Anthony Perl:

need to invest in the time and effort

Anthony Perl:

that we've spent time and effort

Anthony Perl:

learning through our craft, and that

Anthony Perl:

has an appropriate price tag.

Anthony Perl:

Mm-hmm.

Anthony Perl:

SellMates does too.

Anthony Perl:

And I think this is the bit that we-

Anthony Perl:

Oh, I'm so excited … identified was

Anthony Perl:

that the gap in the market was that

Anthony Perl:

if you're starting out, there's no

Anthony Perl:

real help for you that doesn't result

Anthony Perl:

in other dickheads around the room

Anthony Perl:

trying to sell you shit for the entire

Anthony Perl:

day that you're standing with them.

Anthony Perl:

And that was the start of this

Anthony Perl:

premise, was how do we give you

Anthony Perl:

as much as we can where we don't just

Anthony Perl:

talk at you for the day, but we

Anthony Perl:

actually get you to write it and do it.

Anthony Perl:

It's a doing session.

Anthony Perl:

It's not a talk about doing session.

Anthony Perl:

The whole idea, it's the whole

Anthony Perl:

premise of, um-

Anthony Perl:

How do you pay a remarkably small

Anthony Perl:

of- A no-brainer fee or something

Anthony Perl:

to work out

Anthony Perl:

a no, a no-brainer amount of money-

Anthony Perl:

Yeah … to actually get shit done and

Anthony Perl:

not be upsold to the titanium, platinum,

Anthony Perl:

phoenix package with extra- Extra

Anthony Perl:

bells and whistles.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, yeah … like whatever the

Anthony Perl:

bloody thing is.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

Right?

Anthony Perl:

Because I mean, I actually saw a post

Anthony Perl:

on social media, and we're, we're doing

Anthony Perl:

that whole 15-minute introduction thing

Anthony Perl:

like you mentioned.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

And, um, there was, uh, it was

Anthony Perl:

about like, it was like, like remember

Anthony Perl:

the whole, the whole, um, uh, the,

Anthony Perl:

yes, last night, literally last night

Anthony Perl:

I commented on a, on a, uh, a post.

Anthony Perl:

Someone had been to a thing for, paid,

Anthony Perl:

what was it $1,650 or something to

Anthony Perl:

go to a full day, a two-day event,

Anthony Perl:

and they spent a quarter to half of

Anthony Perl:

the time literally selling to them the

Anthony Perl:

next program, which is what they do.

Anthony Perl:

You spend $5,000, they sell you

Anthony Perl:

the 15,000.

Anthony Perl:

You spend 15,000, they sell you the

Anthony Perl:

30 and 40,000.

Anthony Perl:

And so one of the great things this

Anthony Perl:

is about is get everyone in a room,

Anthony Perl:

get shit done, and know that the only

Anthony Perl:

person that's gonna try and sell you

Anthony Perl:

something is the bloody sponsor,

Anthony Perl:

because, well, they paid for the room.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah, they paid for the room.

Anthony Perl:

So that's fair.

Anthony Perl:

So that's fair.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

Love it.

Anthony Perl:

I love it.

Anthony Perl:

It's, it's, it's interesting watching

Anthony Perl:

the dynamic of the two of you.

Anthony Perl:

So, so just how did that happen?

Anthony Perl:

How did you, how did the two of you

Anthony Perl:

find each other in the first place?

Anthony Perl:

Aaron & Andrew: Okay.

Anthony Perl:

So-

Anthony Perl:

I don't know.

Anthony Perl:

It's a-- Tell me, who is it?

Anthony Perl:

It's my story.

Anthony Perl:

This is a popcorn run.

Anthony Perl:

I feel like this is actually my

Anthony Perl:

story to tell.

Anthony Perl:

It's your story.

Anthony Perl:

So, um, how do I frame this

Anthony Perl:

the right way?

Anthony Perl:

I went to a-- Let's just call it, I

Anthony Perl:

went to, uh, an event called Cars,

Anthony Perl:

Watches, Legacy.

Anthony Perl:

Yes.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, and, uh, Aaron happened

Anthony Perl:

to be there.

Anthony Perl:

When I met Aaron, uh, we spent the

Anthony Perl:

next two hours just bromancing out.

Anthony Perl:

It was literally like just hard

Anthony Perl:

bromancing.

Anthony Perl:

Like it was very sensual.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, it was, uh, uh… But anyway,

Anthony Perl:

uh, we were just talking shit for

Anthony Perl:

the next two hours.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

Mainly about people.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, no, uh, but we were just talking

Anthony Perl:

shit for, um, for the next two

Anthony Perl:

hours, just making, having laughs.

Anthony Perl:

And then we realized we actually have

Anthony Perl:

very, very similar life experiences,

Anthony Perl:

not just in sales, but also just

Anthony Perl:

in pro-personal life- Yeah

Anthony Perl:

… experiences.

Anthony Perl:

And so we were just talking about that

Anthony Perl:

for hours on end.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, and then, um, we sort of just

Anthony Perl:

kept in touch.

Anthony Perl:

He lives in Sydney, I live in Brisbane.

Anthony Perl:

You know, we ended up having Yochi,

Anthony Perl:

uh, was it perhaps a week or something?

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

Or was it a month later?

Anthony Perl:

Yeah, a month later, whatever.

Anthony Perl:

And then we had deep chats there, and

Anthony Perl:

then, uh, we sort of just kept in touch.

Anthony Perl:

And then, um, how it actually happened

Anthony Perl:

was I was going through a business

Anthony Perl:

partner split at the, at the time,

Anthony Perl:

and, um, and I was developing

Anthony Perl:

something new, and the sales stuff was

Anthony Perl:

really punching me.

Anthony Perl:

And I'm like, I don't know what

Anthony Perl:

happened, like in the moment,

Anthony Perl:

I just had this infant, like

Anthony Perl:

infant idea, right?

Anthony Perl:

It was very infantile.

Anthony Perl:

There was nothing created around it.

Anthony Perl:

It was just like, oh my God, what if?

Anthony Perl:

I, I just… I don't know if you've

Anthony Perl:

ever experienced the moment you

Anthony Perl:

know who you need to talk to about

Anthony Perl:

a certain thing.

Anthony Perl:

Like you just know in your body, in

Anthony Perl:

your soul, like this is the person

Anthony Perl:

I need to talk to about this.

Anthony Perl:

And I'd just gone through a business

Anthony Perl:

partner split, so it made no sense

Anthony Perl:

to go to someone else and go like,

Anthony Perl:

"Hey, I'm thinking about…" You know?

Anthony Perl:

And so, but I, I, I talked to Aaron.

Anthony Perl:

I literally, I think I messaged or

Anthony Perl:

I think we got on the phone the next

Anthony Perl:

day or something.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

Or that day.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

I think it was either that day.

Anthony Perl:

And I told Aaron, and then we just

Anthony Perl:

sat there for a couple hours just

Anthony Perl:

building this idea out and, um, I

Anthony Perl:

was like, "Well, I suppose I have to

Anthony Perl:

go into business with someone now

Anthony Perl:

because like I didn't create the

Anthony Perl:

idea myself." Uh, so you know, I kind of

Anthony Perl:

fucked myself there.

Anthony Perl:

Um, no, like… No, but like, uh,

Anthony Perl:

but that was… I mean, do you--

Anthony Perl:

Was that the same, pretty much the same

Anthony Perl:

experience for you?

Anthony Perl:

I see that way.

Anthony Perl:

That's what, that's what it was for

Anthony Perl:

me, is like just I knew Aaron was

Anthony Perl:

the guy, and I just was like- And

Anthony Perl:

then here we are.

Anthony Perl:

And for me, I'd, in that conversation,

Anthony Perl:

I, you know, even just talking to

Anthony Perl:

Andrew, I, I knew that at some point

Anthony Perl:

in time there was something that we

Anthony Perl:

would do together.

Anthony Perl:

'Cause it, it's just, particularly

Anthony Perl:

with what he was doing with, with,

Anthony Perl:

with the business back then, it

Anthony Perl:

was a, it was a, it was just

Anthony Perl:

done differently.

Anthony Perl:

Mm. Everyone does the same

Anthony Perl:

shit packaged differently.

Anthony Perl:

And, and Andrew had, was onto

Anthony Perl:

something that was really good, and I

Anthony Perl:

went, "Well, hey, how do we, how do

Anthony Perl:

we play together in that area?"

Anthony Perl:

And that certainly, um,

Anthony Perl:

seeded that idea.

Anthony Perl:

I think my, my original thought

Anthony Perl:

was, was a little more narrow, and we

Anthony Perl:

broadened that out to being what it is

Anthony Perl:

today in Sellmates, and I, and

Anthony Perl:

that's, you know, that's been fun.

Anthony Perl:

I like, you know, it's, it's been a

Anthony Perl:

very quick-moving object, much to

Anthony Perl:

the, uh, upset of, of, you know, of

Anthony Perl:

my, my, my wife sat there, um, two

Anthony Perl:

days ago and on the couch, and they're,

Anthony Perl:

you know, just sitting, debriefing

Anthony Perl:

the day, and was like, "Oh my God,

Anthony Perl:

this thing is just going at a million

Anthony Perl:

miles an hour."

Anthony Perl:

I'm like, "You know, really?" I'm

Anthony Perl:

like, "Well," and that's kind of okay.

Anthony Perl:

Like, you know, I've had a honeymoon in

Anthony Perl:

the middle of it.

Anthony Perl:

We've done a bunch of things,

Anthony Perl:

playing catch up, rah, rah, rah.

Anthony Perl:

But like, why fuck around?

Anthony Perl:

Like, just get in, get it done.

Anthony Perl:

Get, get on with it.

Anthony Perl:

Like, you've got a fucking great

Anthony Perl:

idea, and it's gonna work, and it's gonna

Anthony Perl:

make a difference to people.

Anthony Perl:

Then just fucking do it.

Anthony Perl:

Well- You know, that's it.

Anthony Perl:

Damn.

Anthony Perl:

F too.

Anthony Perl:

Let's fucking go home.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, and by the way,

Anthony Perl:

I should point out to everyone

Anthony Perl:

that's listening in, if they haven't

Anthony Perl:

cottoned onto it already, Sellmates

Anthony Perl:

is with an S, right?

Anthony Perl:

For s- For sales.

Anthony Perl:

For sales.

Anthony Perl:

Just, you know, there's a… I, I

Anthony Perl:

th- it's a lovely play on words, by

Anthony Perl:

the way, uh, you know, for anyone-

Anthony Perl:

Aaron & Andrew: Well, that was our

Anthony Perl:

whole idea, right, is learning to

Anthony Perl:

sell, but also, you know, being stuck

Anthony Perl:

in there with your mates- Oh, 100%

Anthony Perl:

and you're in, you're in business.

Anthony Perl:

And I think it's funny 'cause, um,

Anthony Perl:

there's-- What the fuck is that?

Anthony Perl:

So, um, um, sorry.

Anthony Perl:

There's photos in front of me

Anthony Perl:

and someone's sitting there like

Anthony Perl:

Right?

Anthony Perl:

And I'm just like, I have no idea what's

Anthony Perl:

happening here.

Anthony Perl:

Um, anyway, uh, but Sell Mates is

Anthony Perl:

the idea that you-- it's not just sales.

Anthony Perl:

You're in there with your mates, and we,

Anthony Perl:

we're leaning pretty hard into the mates

Anthony Perl:

thing because one of the things I've been

Anthony Perl:

saying lately is, you know, business

Anthony Perl:

can be lonely, sales can be hard-

Anthony Perl:

Yeah … right?

Anthony Perl:

We fix both.

Anthony Perl:

You know what I mean?

Anthony Perl:

Um, you know, so we give you a, a

Anthony Perl:

community of people that are just there

Anthony Perl:

to have a really good time- Yeah

Anthony Perl:

and also, and also do business

Anthony Perl:

and buy from you.

Anthony Perl:

Literally buy from you.

Anthony Perl:

And so, and that we encourage that.

Anthony Perl:

It's like, dude, people

Anthony Perl:

are in the room.

Anthony Perl:

Go buy some shit and go sell some shit.

Anthony Perl:

Not this like you walk in the room,

Anthony Perl:

and they're like, "We don't sell

Anthony Perl:

in this room." We do, right?

Anthony Perl:

You have fucking eyes.

Anthony Perl:

Absolutely.

Anthony Perl:

Like, go get a duck.

Anthony Perl:

There's two hundred ducks in this room.

Anthony Perl:

Go find one, right?

Anthony Perl:

Make it your duck, right?

Anthony Perl:

Uh, anyway, so there's that.

Anthony Perl:

But then I think the other thing

Anthony Perl:

is, um, the mates element is just good

Anthony Perl:

humans, you know.

Anthony Perl:

Like, one of the things… I, I don't

Anthony Perl:

want to tell you how we're going to

Anthony Perl:

do it, but one of the things we're

Anthony Perl:

toying with is a way of getting people

Anthony Perl:

to leave their wanker at the door.

Anthony Perl:

Yes.

Anthony Perl:

Do you know what I mean?

Anthony Perl:

As you walk in, leave your wanker

Anthony Perl:

at the door, right?

Anthony Perl:

Because we don't want it

Anthony Perl:

in this room.

Anthony Perl:

You know what I mean?

Anthony Perl:

This is a room of good humans, good

Anthony Perl:

people doing good things and, and, and

Anthony Perl:

change, and changing the environment.

Anthony Perl:

So I think, um, it's leaning into that a-

Anthony Perl:

that mates element and just creating…

Anthony Perl:

I mean, I'll just fucking come

Anthony Perl:

out and say it.

Anthony Perl:

I want to do two for me, right?

Anthony Perl:

And I want to know your two

Anthony Perl:

things, actually.

Anthony Perl:

But for me, my two things are this.

Anthony Perl:

I want every other sales str- coach

Anthony Perl:

or big coaching firm to fucking

Anthony Perl:

hate me, right?

Anthony Perl:

You know, I want them to, I want them

Anthony Perl:

to be like, "Why are they doing this?

Anthony Perl:

Oh my God, it's so ridiculous.

Anthony Perl:

Nee, nee, nee." Like, fucking do it.

Anthony Perl:

Don't care, right?

Anthony Perl:

And the second thing, um, the

Anthony Perl:

second thing I want to do is, um,

Anthony Perl:

change the, the failure rate, right?

Anthony Perl:

There's nine- ninety-six percent

Anthony Perl:

of small businesses fail in the first

Anthony Perl:

ten years, right?

Anthony Perl:

And I want that, I want that- Lower

Anthony Perl:

… lower, right?

Anthony Perl:

And I, I, and I know that we can

Anthony Perl:

do that, right?

Anthony Perl:

Um, and I think that's the, the

Anthony Perl:

big thing for me is like, you know,

Anthony Perl:

if, if the, the brand is about, you

Anthony Perl:

know, disrupting the crap out of the

Anthony Perl:

industry and the market and the, the

Anthony Perl:

business and sales coaching market

Anthony Perl:

and just… And if, and if everyone

Anthony Perl:

hates that, well, then that sounds

Anthony Perl:

like a you problem.

Anthony Perl:

Correct.

Anthony Perl:

I think it's-- My, my two would be

Anthony Perl:

fairly similar, and I know it's a

Anthony Perl:

bit of a cop-out, but at the end

Anthony Perl:

of the day- Mm. I think you're right.

Anthony Perl:

The market is there for it.

Anthony Perl:

It-- There's a, there's a lot of

Anthony Perl:

crap in the market right now that

Anthony Perl:

just floats around there, and it, and

Anthony Perl:

a lot of it is all talk and no action.

Anthony Perl:

Mm. And I think that's the

Anthony Perl:

biggest thing.

Anthony Perl:

I mean, even in my, uh, my consulting

Anthony Perl:

firm, there's a… The get shit

Anthony Perl:

done sessions, we put them into

Anthony Perl:

everyone's calendar every single week

Anthony Perl:

because they're… You just need time

Anthony Perl:

to get shit done in your day, and

Anthony Perl:

you need to get out of your own way

Anthony Perl:

to go and do that.

Anthony Perl:

Mm.

Anthony Perl:

And so for me, that's the, this

Anthony Perl:

is the action time.

Anthony Perl:

This is the ability for us to actually

Anthony Perl:

get people out of their own way, get

Anthony Perl:

them out of their distraction town

Anthony Perl:

of the office and wherever it is

Anthony Perl:

they might be doing the things they

Anthony Perl:

probably know they shouldn't be doing,

Anthony Perl:

and actually get them doing things.

Anthony Perl:

I think a lot of mine is actually,

Anthony Perl:

um, the idea of overcoming, like for

Anthony Perl:

a lot of people, I'm noticing one of the

Anthony Perl:

big keys, um, like I like the way you

Anthony Perl:

said it, is you came home and there's

Anthony Perl:

all this stuff to do, and then you and

Anthony Perl:

Kim are like sitting on the couch, and

Anthony Perl:

you're, you're like, she's like, "I feel

Anthony Perl:

like this went a mile a minute."

Anthony Perl:

Right?

Anthony Perl:

"I feel like this headed this way and

Anthony Perl:

this, that, and the other." It's like,

Anthony Perl:

what is happening?

Anthony Perl:

It's like, because Andrew has no fear.

Anthony Perl:

Do you know what I mean?

Anthony Perl:

Like, I don't… I'm not, I'm not

Anthony Perl:

here to fuck around.

Anthony Perl:

I'm not here to… I don't need to

Anthony Perl:

worry about whether, you know, oh, are

Anthony Perl:

we gonna fail?

Anthony Perl:

Is this gonna work?

Anthony Perl:

Am I gonna spend that five

Anthony Perl:

thousand dollars?

Anthony Perl:

Am I gonna do this?

Anthony Perl:

I'm just like, "Just go." Right?

Anthony Perl:

And the moment you just go,

Anthony Perl:

like- Give, give yourself permission

Anthony Perl:

to do that.

Anthony Perl:

Exactly right.

Anthony Perl:

Give yourself permission to fail.

Anthony Perl:

You know what I mean?

Anthony Perl:

And so, like, it's just no fear.

Anthony Perl:

Things can-- Like, your capacity

Anthony Perl:

as a human is actually infinite.

Anthony Perl:

Yes.

Anthony Perl:

Right?

Anthony Perl:

It just depends on whether you

Anthony Perl:

live in emotional expansiveness or

Anthony Perl:

emotional pressure.

Anthony Perl:

Your logic capacity is freaking- Huge

Anthony Perl:

… boundless, right?

Anthony Perl:

It's boundless.

Anthony Perl:

The problem is not whether you can

Anthony Perl:

handle the stuff.

Anthony Perl:

The problem is what's the

Anthony Perl:

emotional pressure or emotional

Anthony Perl:

expansiveness you put on yourself?

Anthony Perl:

Yeah, that's the difference.

Anthony Perl:

And so I think the, the answer is part

Anthony Perl:

of this is about, you know, not just,

Anthony Perl:

um, the get shit done, it's the like,

Anthony Perl:

how do we remove the fear so you can

Anthony Perl:

get the shit done.

Anthony Perl:

Correct.

Anthony Perl:

Do you know what I mean?

Anthony Perl:

And so at the start of all of

Anthony Perl:

the day, then seeded throughout

Anthony Perl:

everything, as you can probably

Anthony Perl:

imagine, there's gonna be a very

Anthony Perl:

big elements of performance.

Anthony Perl:

Like how do you perform?

Anthony Perl:

How do you overcome fear?

Anthony Perl:

How do you, how do you drive forward?

Anthony Perl:

So there'll be a massive mindset

Anthony Perl:

element, uh, but it'll literally be

Anthony Perl:

about, you know, generating big

Anthony Perl:

amounts of sales.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

Consistent sales.

Anthony Perl:

Not… I don't need you to be

Anthony Perl:

a billionaire.

Anthony Perl:

Correct.

Anthony Perl:

What I need you to be is fucking

Anthony Perl:

consistent, so you're not going

Anthony Perl:

into the feast and famine.

Anthony Perl:

Correct.

Anthony Perl:

Do you know what I mean?

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

I'd prefer not, yeah, instead of the

Anthony Perl:

most sales teams in my experience have

Anthony Perl:

the ups, downs, you know, big trough,

Anthony Perl:

peaks and troughs.

Anthony Perl:

Should we let, should we let

Anthony Perl:

the podcast host actually

Anthony Perl:

say something?

Anthony Perl:

We probably should.

Anthony Perl:

Pause.

Anthony Perl:

Anthony Perl: Just every now

Anthony Perl:

and then I'll just ju- just jump

Anthony Perl:

Aaron & Andrew: in.

Anthony Perl:

Anthony Perl: I love it.

Anthony Perl:

We like the triple, triple A here.

Anthony Perl:

I'm just like that extra A

Anthony Perl:

that's jumping on the end here.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, big A. That's right.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

Well, d- so, so tell me, um, you know,

Anthony Perl:

how do you… Well, look, no, let's

Anthony Perl:

just scrap that.

Anthony Perl:

Let's, I wanna know what the biggest

Anthony Perl:

amount of BS is that you guys see that

Anthony Perl:

really pisses you off, that gets in

Anthony Perl:

the way of people

Anthony Perl:

Aaron & Andrew: I'll, I'll just be,

Anthony Perl:

I'll just be today.

Anthony Perl:

I feel like, I feel like you'll be nicer

Anthony Perl:

around because- From an industry

Anthony Perl:

standpoint, there's, there's a lot of

Anthony Perl:

talk and no action.

Anthony Perl:

There are way too many people charging

Anthony Perl:

a shitload of money individually to

Anthony Perl:

businesses that can't necessarily

Anthony Perl:

afford it- Mm … and taking

Anthony Perl:

their time to enable an upsell.

Anthony Perl:

And I appreciate the capitalist

Anthony Perl:

mindset to that.

Anthony Perl:

However, there is a way that everyone

Anthony Perl:

can win, and all boats can rise

Anthony Perl:

with the tide.

Anthony Perl:

And I think your, your commentary

Anthony Perl:

about reducing the failure rate's

Anthony Perl:

a critical one.

Anthony Perl:

If ninety-six percent of

Anthony Perl:

businesses fail in the first ten

Anthony Perl:

years of operation, we're doing

Anthony Perl:

something wrong.

Anthony Perl:

Mm. Or, or whoever is surrounding

Anthony Perl:

them, advising them, guiding them,

Anthony Perl:

talking to them, communicating with

Anthony Perl:

them, they're doing something wrong.

Anthony Perl:

And so for me, the ability for us

Anthony Perl:

to come in there at a no-brainer

Anthony Perl:

price tag, just go, "Please stop

Anthony Perl:

listening to all the other dickheads who

Anthony Perl:

are highly capable dickheads, but

Anthony Perl:

they're, they're, they're not enabling

Anthony Perl:

your success in the right way.

Anthony Perl:

This is no bullshit.

Anthony Perl:

It's no frills.

Anthony Perl:

You are literally coming here to

Anthony Perl:

build and execute on your plan.

Anthony Perl:

And then we'll keep you in check

Anthony Perl:

on the way through because that's how

Anthony Perl:

we all grow and develop." We were

Anthony Perl:

the dickheads.

Anthony Perl:

But that's, it's, I love- Accountability

Anthony Perl:

… there's an accountability piece

Anthony Perl:

because I can as- we, we talk about

Anthony Perl:

this all the time in both with my, with

Anthony Perl:

our kids and also in, in, in our, our

Anthony Perl:

work partnerships.

Anthony Perl:

I can, I can either feed you once, or

Anthony Perl:

I can teach you to fish and feed you

Anthony Perl:

for a lifetime.

Anthony Perl:

And that part for me is what this

Anthony Perl:

community is about.

Anthony Perl:

We're here to teach you how to fish.

Anthony Perl:

I think for me, the thing that,

Anthony Perl:

mm. Wait for the… Are you ready?

Anthony Perl:

You've, you've, you've prepped

Anthony Perl:

for this.

Anthony Perl:

Have you got it?

Anthony Perl:

The thing that, the thing that drives

Anthony Perl:

me probably the most mental is that.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, no, the thing that drives me the

Anthony Perl:

most mental is, uh-

Anthony Perl:

I think Aaron's nailed That there's

Anthony Perl:

a lot of people that are going

Anthony Perl:

in one-on-one in the business.

Anthony Perl:

But I think the thing that gets

Anthony Perl:

me is, is what I said before about

Anthony Perl:

the, the five thousand dollar day.

Anthony Perl:

You're in a room with two hundred

Anthony Perl:

or three hundred or five hundred or

Anthony Perl:

a thousand other people, and a highly

Anthony Perl:

intelligent business person, highly

Anthony Perl:

intelligent, and a highly capable human

Anthony Perl:

is on the stage.

Anthony Perl:

And what they're, what they're

Anthony Perl:

thinking about-- And don't me wrong,

Anthony Perl:

I'm not saying we're thinking

Anthony Perl:

about anything different, right?

Anthony Perl:

But what they're thinking about is,

Anthony Perl:

"How do I make a, you know, a multi,

Anthony Perl:

multi-million dollar business? How do

Anthony Perl:

we generate as much as we can? How do

Anthony Perl:

we impact as much people as we can?"

Anthony Perl:

Right?

Anthony Perl:

"But more importantly, you've

Anthony Perl:

spent five thousand dollars. How do I

Anthony Perl:

get you into the fifteen thousand

Anthony Perl:

dollar package and generate more

Anthony Perl:

profit?" This, that, and the other.

Anthony Perl:

Um, and that's great, but they

Anthony Perl:

didn't come there, they didn't

Anthony Perl:

spend their, very often for these

Anthony Perl:

people, their last five thousand

Anthony Perl:

dollars- Yes.

Anthony Perl:

Right … to go get a loan, to pay,

Anthony Perl:

do your fifteen thousand dollar

Anthony Perl:

program, which they'll do because

Anthony Perl:

you sell them the, the big idea.

Anthony Perl:

Yes.

Anthony Perl:

Right?

Anthony Perl:

They spent their five thousand

Anthony Perl:

dollars to come and get shit done, so

Anthony Perl:

they could hopefully go home and feed

Anthony Perl:

their family.

Anthony Perl:

So they could hopefully go home

Anthony Perl:

and, uh, and, you know, be the man

Anthony Perl:

that brings home, you know, uh, that

Anthony Perl:

builds the business that, you know,

Anthony Perl:

their wife is now proud of them.

Anthony Perl:

They, they, you know, they, they do

Anthony Perl:

it so they can, so that it can be the

Anthony Perl:

wife that goes home to support the, the

Anthony Perl:

husband that, you know, has been in

Anthony Perl:

an accident, and now she does the

Anthony Perl:

thing 'cause she was a mom first.

Anthony Perl:

Or maybe she's try, or maybe she's

Anthony Perl:

the, the beautiful, the, the, the woman

Anthony Perl:

that's like, you know, building the

Anthony Perl:

dream she always had and, and, you

Anthony Perl:

know, supporting her family and

Anthony Perl:

supporting this, that, and the other.

Anthony Perl:

I mean, it doesn't matter which way

Anthony Perl:

it goes, but what matters is these

Anthony Perl:

people are all people that have

Anthony Perl:

dreams and values in their own life.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

Do you know what I mean?

Anthony Perl:

And the thing is, you take that twenty

Anthony Perl:

thousand dollars from them, they

Anthony Perl:

could have put that twenty thousand

Anthony Perl:

dollars into some marketing, into

Anthony Perl:

building a website, into whatever the

Anthony Perl:

thing is, right?

Anthony Perl:

You-- But they nee- they can't do

Anthony Perl:

any of that stuff until they've--

Anthony Perl:

And some of them know this, until

Anthony Perl:

they do their sales stuff first, right?

Anthony Perl:

Right.

Anthony Perl:

Because you need to go get

Anthony Perl:

a fucking duck.

Anthony Perl:

You need to know what your

Anthony Perl:

message is.

Anthony Perl:

You need to know what your pattern

Anthony Perl:

of action is.

Anthony Perl:

You need to know what your, um,

Anthony Perl:

what your questions you need to ask,

Anthony Perl:

the problems you need to solve, how

Anthony Perl:

to say the thing you need to say,

Anthony Perl:

what is actually gonna get people

Anthony Perl:

to take action with your product.

Anthony Perl:

You know, there, there's all those,

Anthony Perl:

those, those things that you need.

Anthony Perl:

Um, they, and people know they need that.

Anthony Perl:

And so the idea here is like, what

Anthony Perl:

pisses me off is like, how dare you

Anthony Perl:

take someone's last twenty thousand

Anthony Perl:

dollars because you think, right,

Anthony Perl:

the, you know, be- because you,

Anthony Perl:

you're just caring about the growth of

Anthony Perl:

your own business, and you're so

Anthony Perl:

caught up in your own narcissistic

Anthony Perl:

self-fucking image- Right

Anthony Perl:

that you think that you can, um, put-

Anthony Perl:

Oh, felt really good … uh, but

Anthony Perl:

you can put, you can put two hundred

Anthony Perl:

people in a room And know that, you know,

Anthony Perl:

that every one of those is gonna get

Anthony Perl:

amazing results, and they're gonna make

Anthony Perl:

millions of dollars.

Anthony Perl:

Yes, the 10% of your people do.

Anthony Perl:

Correct.

Anthony Perl:

And, and I'm not saying that we're

Anthony Perl:

gonna be different, but at least

Anthony Perl:

we only charged you a thousand

Anthony Perl:

fucking dollars.

Anthony Perl:

Correct.

Anthony Perl:

Do you know what I mean?

Anthony Perl:

Not, not 20.

Anthony Perl:

Right?

Anthony Perl:

At least we just didn't upsell you.

Anthony Perl:

You know, at least we gave you the,

Anthony Perl:

the metrics for a reasonable price

Anthony Perl:

tag that doesn't ruin your life

Anthony Perl:

at the same time.

Anthony Perl:

So the, the part of me is that, is

Anthony Perl:

one of the things.

Anthony Perl:

And the other thing, the other

Anthony Perl:

part of me is, is, um, teaching people

Anthony Perl:

how to sell is an irrelevant concept

Anthony Perl:

if they don't have a strategy

Anthony Perl:

or a process.

Anthony Perl:

Correct.

Anthony Perl:

Right?

Anthony Perl:

And a lot of people are

Anthony Perl:

teaching to sell.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, and actually my favorite one, my

Anthony Perl:

biggest most is if I see another fucking

Anthony Perl:

business coach te- try and be- try

Anthony Perl:

and teach people to sell, I'm like,

Anthony Perl:

"Dude, you don't know how to sell.

Anthony Perl:

You are a business strategist and a

Anthony Perl:

business coach. And yes, you built your

Anthony Perl:

business 'cause you had really,

Anthony Perl:

really good things, and maybe you know

Anthony Perl:

how to physically sell your stuff

Anthony Perl:

because you've learnt how to sell."

Anthony Perl:

But there's a difference between

Anthony Perl:

knowing how to sell, right, and

Anthony Perl:

understanding buying psychology

Anthony Perl:

and understanding sales psychology

Anthony Perl:

and understanding, uh, how to

Anthony Perl:

strategically build sales processes and

Anthony Perl:

sales strategies.

Anthony Perl:

And so what we wanna-- what I

Anthony Perl:

wanna do, and what we wanna do is

Anthony Perl:

give a small, tiny little business a

Anthony Perl:

sales department that they can…

Anthony Perl:

Like, the foundation of a

Anthony Perl:

sales department that they can

Anthony Perl:

launch off, right?

Anthony Perl:

Because if you put a sa- I, and I've seen

Anthony Perl:

teams do it, right?

Anthony Perl:

You put a, a team of people, um,

Anthony Perl:

you put… Sorry.

Anthony Perl:

The, the, uh, a bigger business,

Anthony Perl:

well, not bigger, like a

Anthony Perl:

million-dollar business or

Anthony Perl:

two-million-dollar business will

Anthony Perl:

hire their first salesperson.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

And they'll just drop them in, and

Anthony Perl:

they go, "He's been a salesperson for

Anthony Perl:

20 years. He'll crush it." It's

Anthony Perl:

like, actually, no.

Anthony Perl:

What he's gonna do is run around

Anthony Perl:

like a hot mess 'cause he's a

Anthony Perl:

fucking salesperson.

Anthony Perl:

He's good at soft skills.

Anthony Perl:

What he needs is a foundation, a

Anthony Perl:

process, and a strategy, and a set

Anthony Perl:

of actions that you go, "Go do this,"

Anthony Perl:

and he goes, "Okay."

Anthony Perl:

And then he goes and does it and puts

Anthony Perl:

his little flavor on it, and suddenly,

Anthony Perl:

boom, he gets results, and he gets

Anthony Perl:

consistent results.

Anthony Perl:

And so, um, yeah, it pisses me off

Anthony Perl:

when people step out on their own.

Anthony Perl:

It pisses me off when people charge

Anthony Perl:

people way too much money, uh, for

Anthony Perl:

For no reason, you know?

Anthony Perl:

And, and both Aaron and I have really

Anthony Perl:

expensive products that we both

Anthony Perl:

charge, by the way.

Anthony Perl:

Can we point that out?

Anthony Perl:

There, there is- The difference

Anthony Perl:

is- … a time and a place for that.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah, there is a time and a

Anthony Perl:

place for that.

Anthony Perl:

We both have that, and we charge it to

Anthony Perl:

the right people, and that's why both

Anthony Perl:

of what we do is very invite-only.

Anthony Perl:

Mm-hmm.

Anthony Perl:

And you can generate really exceptional

Anthony Perl:

success doing that.

Anthony Perl:

You don't need to destroy half the

Anthony Perl:

fucking population just so you can feed

Anthony Perl:

your ego, be on the fucking front stage

Anthony Perl:

of, you know, every magazine on the

Anthony Perl:

planet and have and run this 3,000 or

Anthony Perl:

10,000-person event and go, "Look at me

Anthony Perl:

charging everybody $20,000." And, you

Anthony Perl:

know, like Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

Like I said, anyway, I told

Anthony Perl:

you, I, that's what I was like.

Anthony Perl:

You got on the roll.

Anthony Perl:

It's good.

Anthony Perl:

It was good to watch.

Anthony Perl:

That's my story.

Anthony Perl:

It's a good story.

Anthony Perl:

So let me… Uh, two,

Anthony Perl:

two more questions I want to ask you

Anthony Perl:

both before we, before we finish up.

Anthony Perl:

Now, one-

Anthony Perl:

Aaron & Andrew: Well, I'm done

Anthony Perl:

being, being released.

Anthony Perl:

Anthony Perl: Because otherwise

Anthony Perl:

we're gonna be, we're gonna be

Anthony Perl:

here for hours.

Anthony Perl:

We're gonna talk, we're gonna talk

Anthony Perl:

about having a different podcast

Anthony Perl:

altogether after we finish this one.

Anthony Perl:

But we-- But let me ask you this.

Anthony Perl:

The word sales, is that one of

Anthony Perl:

the turn offs for a lot of people?

Anthony Perl:

Is that what just makes people just

Anthony Perl:

stop and go, "Eh?" I know I'm from, like,

Anthony Perl:

from a marketing background, right?

Anthony Perl:

So the idea of sales was always jarring.

Anthony Perl:

And one day someone said to me, "Oh,

Anthony Perl:

you've got to have a sales conversation."

Anthony Perl:

And I suddenly went, what if I just

Anthony Perl:

focused on the word conversation instead

Anthony Perl:

of the word sales?

Anthony Perl:

And suddenly all the fear went out the

Anthony Perl:

window because, you know, just thinking

Anthony Perl:

about that whole concept of sales and

Anthony Perl:

selling to people, like, you know,

Anthony Perl:

it, it can jar.

Anthony Perl:

And you know, some, some people,

Anthony Perl:

clearly to you guys, it comes very

Anthony Perl:

naturally, but it doesn't to everyone.

Anthony Perl:

Aaron & Andrew: I think that's half

Anthony Perl:

the challenge.

Anthony Perl:

Like, yes, sales can be a dirty word.

Anthony Perl:

It's certainly in, in the industry that

Anthony Perl:

I cut my teeth in, in terms of building

Anthony Perl:

things up in, in IT managed services.

Anthony Perl:

Everyone hated salespeople.

Anthony Perl:

It was like, "Oh my God, you can't

Anthony Perl:

have a salesperson. You can't have them

Anthony Perl:

talking to people."

Anthony Perl:

Well, hang on.

Anthony Perl:

It depends on the conversation

Anthony Perl:

they're having.

Anthony Perl:

It depends on how they've

Anthony Perl:

been enabled.

Anthony Perl:

It depends on how your business

Anthony Perl:

encourages them to work.

Anthony Perl:

Sales isn't about shoving square pegs

Anthony Perl:

through round holes.

Anthony Perl:

It's about uncovering and

Anthony Perl:

identifying opportunities.

Anthony Perl:

It's about having, to your point, the

Anthony Perl:

art of conversation.

Anthony Perl:

And, you know, I appreciate

Anthony Perl:

the marketing theory and, you

Anthony Perl:

know, bringing out the crayons.

Anthony Perl:

But, um, from a sales perspective,

Anthony Perl:

it is… There's an art to it, but

Anthony Perl:

it doesn't have to be impossible

Anthony Perl:

for everyone.

Anthony Perl:

Can I simplify it?

Anthony Perl:

Hand, bro.

Anthony Perl:

I've said it to you before, but I

Anthony Perl:

think you'll love this, is I, I, I

Anthony Perl:

was finding a way to teach my clients,

Anthony Perl:

when I was running The Results Guys,

Anthony Perl:

to teach them what sales really is in

Anthony Perl:

the simplest format.

Anthony Perl:

Yep.

Anthony Perl:

And I came up with this line.

Anthony Perl:

Excellent.

Anthony Perl:

And they're like, "What is sales?"

Anthony Perl:

It's conversation with a pathway

Anthony Perl:

and an outcome.

Anthony Perl:

Correct.

Anthony Perl:

That's what it is.

Anthony Perl:

I feel like- That's what selling is, is

Anthony Perl:

like learn how to have a conversation

Anthony Perl:

that leads a party to a, to an outcome.

Anthony Perl:

Correct.

Anthony Perl:

Right?

Anthony Perl:

That's it.

Anthony Perl:

A, a positive outcome for them.

Anthony Perl:

It's like your job is to help people

Anthony Perl:

make the decision that is right for

Anthony Perl:

them, even though that they don't have

Anthony Perl:

enough knowledge to know what's

Anthony Perl:

right for them.

Anthony Perl:

Correct.

Anthony Perl:

Right?

Anthony Perl:

It's, it's like, um, I think sales

Anthony Perl:

is a- People are terrified of sales.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

People are terrified of selling.

Anthony Perl:

But I actually think what tends

Anthony Perl:

to happen- They're also terrified

Anthony Perl:

of salespeople

Anthony Perl:

Yeah, I think that's the bigger one.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

Um, it's actually funny because,

Anthony Perl:

um, since you mentioned that, is

Anthony Perl:

selling is not what they're afraid of.

Anthony Perl:

No.

Anthony Perl:

Sales is not what they're afraid of.

Anthony Perl:

They're afraid of being a salesperson.

Anthony Perl:

And being tagged with it forever.

Anthony Perl:

Right.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

People don't want to be a

Anthony Perl:

salesperson, right?

Anthony Perl:

'Cause people are like, "Oh my God."

Anthony Perl:

But it's funny because when, how

Anthony Perl:

many pe- how many salespeople have

Anthony Perl:

you met in your life that you're

Anthony Perl:

like, "That guy was really good.

Anthony Perl:

He was really cool.

Anthony Perl:

He nailed it.

Anthony Perl:

Oh, I'm so happy," you know?

Anthony Perl:

Right.

Anthony Perl:

You just don't want to be a

Anthony Perl:

shitty salesperson.

Anthony Perl:

That's what you don't want to be.

Anthony Perl:

Correct.

Anthony Perl:

Right?

Anthony Perl:

But you're happy with the good one.

Anthony Perl:

So I think, uh, the answer is,

Anthony Perl:

um, for a lot of them, is I think

Anthony Perl:

a lot of people know they need

Anthony Perl:

to sell and they need sales, right?

Anthony Perl:

They're just afraid of it.

Anthony Perl:

And so if we can give them a space to

Anthony Perl:

come where they can feel like there's

Anthony Perl:

good people, there's good fun, because

Anthony Perl:

seriously, look at our brand and look

Anthony Perl:

at the way we handle this interview.

Anthony Perl:

We don't care.

Anthony Perl:

We're just, we're just… This is why

Anthony Perl:

we're so excited about Sellmate.

Anthony Perl:

So we know- And I'm just gonna

Anthony Perl:

put it out there.

Anthony Perl:

I meant to say it before when I

Anthony Perl:

said the two, the two things, it was

Anthony Perl:

one of the two, but then I used

Anthony Perl:

another one 'cause I forgot, 'cause,

Anthony Perl:

you know, ADHD.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, um, the, the thing for me, and

Anthony Perl:

I'll just throw it out there and

Anthony Perl:

I don't care, make everyone in the--

Anthony Perl:

all the sales coaches in the

Anthony Perl:

industry haters.

Anthony Perl:

And number two, right?

Anthony Perl:

Really?

Anthony Perl:

Be the biggest sales community on the

Anthony Perl:

face of the earth.

Anthony Perl:

Right?

Anthony Perl:

Um, like, just bring, bring

Anthony Perl:

everyone together.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

And in a way that they're like, "You

Anthony Perl:

gotta be a part of Selmates." Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

Like, if you're not a Selmate- The

Anthony Perl:

fuck are you doing?

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

You know what I mean?

Anthony Perl:

And just make it so easy to be a

Anthony Perl:

part of it, you know what I mean?

Anthony Perl:

Just give a place for people to

Anthony Perl:

belong, because I think that's

Anthony Perl:

what people don't realize.

Anthony Perl:

If you've been in sales, and everyone

Anthony Perl:

who's been in sales will understand what

Anthony Perl:

I've said, when you are in a sales team,

Anthony Perl:

a re- a good sales team, you truly feel

Anthony Perl:

like you belong.

Anthony Perl:

Right.

Anthony Perl:

There's a sense of camaraderie- Yes

Anthony Perl:

…and teamwork, and it's like

Anthony Perl:

you're going to war together.

Anthony Perl:

You know what I mean?

Anthony Perl:

It's so beautiful.

Anthony Perl:

Like, and, and you know, it's really

Anthony Perl:

funny 'cause I feel that around me in

Anthony Perl:

business right now.

Anthony Perl:

I've got some amazing people

Anthony Perl:

like Russell Pearson, like Steve

Anthony Perl:

Mack, like you.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, like, and, and people like around,

Anthony Perl:

it just make me feel like we're going

Anthony Perl:

to war together.

Anthony Perl:

Yep.

Anthony Perl:

You know what I mean?

Anthony Perl:

And it's just so beautiful.

Anthony Perl:

So I just, I, I want that for everyone.

Anthony Perl:

I think the lack of, like everyone's

Anthony Perl:

trying to run, everyone's trying

Anthony Perl:

to run their own race, and I don't

Anthony Perl:

think they need to.

Anthony Perl:

I don't think they have to.

Anthony Perl:

I mean, whether, which, you know,

Anthony Perl:

however you go and find people

Anthony Perl:

to play with and people to work with,

Anthony Perl:

and people that make you better

Anthony Perl:

at what you do, that's what we're

Anthony Perl:

trying to build.

Anthony Perl:

Like a group full of people who just

Anthony Perl:

lift each other up.

Anthony Perl:

Our, our, our job collectively is to

Anthony Perl:

just get you excited about sales and get

Anthony Perl:

you excited about selling, and get

Anthony Perl:

you excited about having conversations

Anthony Perl:

with people that lead to the outcomes

Anthony Perl:

that both they and you want.

Anthony Perl:

Anthony Perl: Ideally.

Anthony Perl:

Anyone who's not got excited about

Anthony Perl:

sales from having listened to the two

Anthony Perl:

of you for the last, uh, half hour- …is

Anthony Perl:

kidding themselves.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, now I got one final question I

Anthony Perl:

need to ask both of you, is who

Anthony Perl:

are your greatest influencers?

Anthony Perl:

Aaron & Andrew: Oh.

Anthony Perl:

It's a good one.

Anthony Perl:

It's a good question.

Anthony Perl:

I know the answer to that pretty much.

Anthony Perl:

You start, Gav.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, uh, Tony Robbins would

Anthony Perl:

definitely be my greatest influence.

Anthony Perl:

Like, just as much as, um, you

Anthony Perl:

know, say what you will, but, you

Anthony Perl:

know, I think I've done thousands of

Anthony Perl:

hours of personal development and,

Anthony Perl:

and a lot of it started with him.

Anthony Perl:

You know what I mean?

Anthony Perl:

He's just… Like, I think, I think

Anthony Perl:

people say, can talk about all

Anthony Perl:

the greatest minds in history, but I

Anthony Perl:

think in the last hundred years, he's

Anthony Perl:

probably the person that's influenced

Anthony Perl:

the world the most.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

Because all the people that you,

Anthony Perl:

that you see that he, that have

Anthony Perl:

influenced the world the most,

Anthony Perl:

guess who they got influenced by?

Anthony Perl:

Very often they'll, they'll reference

Anthony Perl:

Tony in a lot of their stuff.

Anthony Perl:

Yeah.

Anthony Perl:

Oprah, you know, uh, Akon, the

Anthony Perl:

presidents of the United States,

Anthony Perl:

several of them, you know what I mean?

Anthony Perl:

It's just ridiculous.

Anthony Perl:

So Tony Robbins has been a massive

Anthony Perl:

one for me.

Anthony Perl:

The other one is Brendon Burchard.

Anthony Perl:

Absolute machine, um, of

Anthony Perl:

a human being.

Anthony Perl:

He's one of the foremost

Anthony Perl:

performance coaches on the planet.

Anthony Perl:

Uh, if you haven't read his books, you

Anthony Perl:

should definitely go read them

Anthony Perl:

Hmm.

Anthony Perl:

I, I'm probably a little more, more

Anthony Perl:

insular in the way actually that

Anthony Perl:

I've approached life from sales.

Anthony Perl:

It's been largely self-started.

Anthony Perl:

I was probably not quite as out there

Anthony Perl:

in terms of going, and I haven't done

Anthony Perl:

thousands of hours of sales training.

Anthony Perl:

No, no, no, I didn't say sales training.

Anthony Perl:

I said personal development.

Anthony Perl:

Personal development.

Anthony Perl:

Sorry.

Anthony Perl:

I'm not sales training.

Anthony Perl:

Just different.

Anthony Perl:

Different.

Anthony Perl:

Um, and yeah, so for me, I, I'm

Anthony Perl:

probably more insular and more

Anthony Perl:

focused on them.

Anthony Perl:

More recently, I'm certainly jumping on

Anthony Perl:

the Lencioni train.

Anthony Perl:

Um, Patrick Lencioni and what

Anthony Perl:

he's done from a business structure

Anthony Perl:

and awkwardness and conversations

Anthony Perl:

and, you know, the, you know, uh,

Anthony Perl:

five dysfunctions of a team and that

Anthony Perl:

sort of thing.

Anthony Perl:

I-- That for me speaks volumes

Anthony Perl:

in terms of how businesses get

Anthony Perl:

better and how businesses have the

Anthony Perl:

right conversations at the right times.

Anthony Perl:

Individually, though, um, I, I get

Anthony Perl:

surrounded by the people that I hang

Anthony Perl:

out and believe that everybody I come

Anthony Perl:

across has something to teach me.

Anthony Perl:

And through my career, through my

Anthony Perl:

journey, that's been different leaders

Anthony Perl:

in my businesses, and they've all

Anthony Perl:

tended to be rather direct about what

Anthony Perl:

they need, what they want, what

Anthony Perl:

the expectations were, and I was

Anthony Perl:

happy to sit there behind them.

Anthony Perl:

Um, I joke about my old boss, um, he's,

Anthony Perl:

he-- we're at an IT managed service

Anthony Perl:

provider, and I, I joke about the

Anthony Perl:

fact that he gave me equal pats on

Anthony Perl:

the back and slaps on the back of the

Anthony Perl:

head in whatever measure that

Anthony Perl:

required, depending on what I needed

Anthony Perl:

in any moment.

Anthony Perl:

But he gave me the freedom, exactly,

Anthony Perl:

gave me the freedom to actually go

Anthony Perl:

and learn and harness and work

Anthony Perl:

and develop and actually grow our

Anthony Perl:

sales organization and triple it

Anthony Perl:

over the course of my tenure there.

Anthony Perl:

And it was just, got the space

Anthony Perl:

to do that.

Anthony Perl:

And so, um, mine is again, more local

Anthony Perl:

rather than the Anthony Robbins

Anthony Perl:

of the world and, and, and a

Anthony Perl:

bit more global.

Anthony Perl:

Um- Anthony Robbins.

Anthony Perl:

Well, yeah, I, I mean, yeah, I'm

Anthony Perl:

not, not gonna… Yeah, that.

Anthony Perl:

Anyway, that's my answer.

Anthony Perl:

Short answer.

Anthony Perl:

Cool.

Anthony Perl:

We will never give you a long

Anthony Perl:

answer short.

Anthony Perl:

No, we won't.

Anthony Perl:

The short long road or

Anthony Perl:

the long short road.

Anthony Perl:

Give me plenty of food

Anthony Perl:

Aaron & Andrew: for thinking.

Anthony Perl:

Anthony Perl: That's a whole

Anthony Perl:

nother debate.

Anthony Perl:

The long short road or the

Anthony Perl:

short long road.

Anthony Perl:

You gotta work that one out.

Anthony Perl:

Aaron & Andrew: Correct.

Anthony Perl:

Correct.

Anthony Perl:

Anthony Perl: Guys, it's been an

Anthony Perl:

absolute pleasure.

Anthony Perl:

You're gonna be at the Influencers

Anthony Perl:

event, so, uh, encouraging everyone

Anthony Perl:

to, uh, reach out while you're there,

Anthony Perl:

and, uh, we'll include details

Anthony Perl:

on, in the show notes of how people

Anthony Perl:

can get in touch with you guys.

Anthony Perl:

But sellmates.com.au,

Anthony Perl:

right?

Anthony Perl:

Aaron & Andrew: Be clear and clear.

Anthony Perl:

That is all you need to start with,

Anthony Perl:

and come and have a chat with us.

Anthony Perl:

Anthony Perl: Excellent.

Anthony Perl:

Well, thank you so much for being part

Anthony Perl:

of the podcast.

Anthony Perl:

Aaron & Andrew: Thank you again.

Anthony Perl:

Thanks.

Anthony Perl:

Anthony Perl: Well, that's

Anthony Perl:

this conversation wrapped up.

Anthony Perl:

If it got you thinking about your

Anthony Perl:

own influence, The Influencers 2026

Anthony Perl:

is on Wednesday, October 7th, at

Anthony Perl:

the Northside Conference Centre in

Anthony Perl:

Sydney, and tickets are available via

Anthony Perl:

influencers2026.com.au.

Anthony Perl:

The link, of course, is also

Anthony Perl:

in the show notes.

Anthony Perl:

I'll be there on the day, so if you

Anthony Perl:

want to talk about how my team and I

Anthony Perl:

can help you have a podcast that

Anthony Perl:

becomes a content machine for your

Anthony Perl:

business to improve your influence and

Anthony Perl:

make you a voice of brilliance,

Anthony Perl:

come talk to me.

Anthony Perl:

Until then, and don't forget to

Anthony Perl:

keep an eye out for the next episode.
