How to Tell If You Need Rest, a Change, or an Ending
If the thought what if I just stopped has ever crossed your mind, you're in good company. Almost every podcaster has, and most never say it out loud.
Wanting to quit doesn't mean you're failing, and it doesn't mean you lost your calling. It means something is off. The thought is information, not a verdict. The trouble is acting on it on the wrong day.
In This Episode
A simple way to sort out what the thought is really telling you. I call it Rest, Reshape, or Release: three different problems that all sound like "I want to quit" but need three completely different answers. We also talk about why you should decide on a good day about a bad day, how to end a podcast well if that's truly where you land, and what Elijah's story in 1 Kings 19 teaches about being tired, being alone, and the seven thousand you can't see.
Key Takeaways
00:00:05 | Don’t quit in the valley
Wanting to quit is a signal to investigate, not a final verdict. Avoid making a permanent decision during a low point. Revisit it when you’re rested and clear-headed.
00:05:03 | Diagnose the problem before choosing a solution
Ask whether you’d still want to quit if your audience doubled. If not, the real issue may be disappointment or feeling unseen, rather than the podcast itself. Consider whether you need rest, a reshape, or release.
00:09:59 | Fix the strain, not the whole show
Exhaustion can cloud discernment, so take a purposeful break before deciding. If you still care about the show but resent part of the process, identify what you need relief from and redesign that part.
00:15:48 | Give the show a real ending
If the podcast is truly finished after rest and reasonable changes, end it intentionally. Thank listeners, explain what the show meant, and consider leaving the archive available. Don’t let it quietly fade into an unfinished obligation.
00:21:20 | Choose on purpose
Use the good-day test: consider whether audience growth, removing the dreaded task, or taking a real break would change your answer. If you still feel sure about stopping, talk it through with someone honest and trusted.
Rest, Reshape, or Release
Rest. You haven't lost the why; you've lost the energy. Plan a pause, set a return date, and tell your listeners.
Reshape. You still believe in it; you just can't keep doing it like this. Name the one part you dread and change that piece.
Release. You've rested, you've changed what you could, and you still don't want to do this. End it on purpose, with a thank you and a word about what's next.
Your Question for a Good Day
If I could change one thing about this podcast to make it sustainable, what would it be?
If you can name something specific, that's reshape. If the answer is "nothing, I just need a break," that's rest. If the answer is "I wouldn't change anything, I just don't want to do this anymore," and it's still true after a good night's sleep, take it to someone you trust.
