in life is that people are the X Factor

0:02

they constantly surprise us both in

0:04

amazing ways and not so much we're Ben

0:08

Andia and welcome to n on this business

0:10

bites podcast this show is all about

0:13

real life things we all deal with every

0:15

day how they relate to business and how

0:18

to make some sense out of our daily

0:20

chaos welcome to the

0:23

[Music]

0:28

show

0:32

and welcome back to another episode of

0:34

non this business bites I'm Ben and this

0:36

is CA and this week I want to talk about

0:40

lies half lies biases and

0:43

propaganda where is the Line in the

0:47

Sand we sit there and we look at this

0:50

and we say I've got my truth I've got my

0:53

truth you know and the question is is my

0:58

truth the truth I heard the greatest

1:01

line the other day it was from movie it

1:02

says you know do you believe that there

1:05

is one truth it says does does God have

1:08

that truth he say yes God sorry do you

1:11

believe that the Bible is is absolute he

1:13

says yes the Bible is absolute I just

1:15

don't think that any of us are smart

1:16

enough to understand what God was

1:18

meaning when he wrote it ah

1:20

interesting and it's understanding that

1:24

I've was raised one way you were raised

1:26

another way you have your own own ideas

1:31

thoughts challenges fears wants desires

1:34

I have mine you know I grew up in one

1:38

Community you grew up in another

1:39

Community you grew up thinking one thing

1:41

was true I grew up thinking a different

1:43

thing was true doesn't mean that I'm

1:45

right and you're wrong and therefore I

1:48

should think less of you because of

1:50

it it's your interpretation and my

1:54

interpretation based on our biases based

1:58

on what we've what brought us to that

2:00

point of our

2:02

lives and we need to be able to discuss

2:05

it on the premise of ideas we need to be

2:08

able to sit there and say okay this is

2:11

what I believe based on what I've

2:13

learned to this point in time this is

2:15

what you've learned over this point in

2:17

time it's not me against you it's not my

2:20

God's bigger than your

2:22

God it's the idea that you think a

2:25

certain way based on the things that

2:27

you've learned I think a different way

2:29

because based on the things that I've

2:31

learned and those are our

2:34

interpretations and there is no absolute

2:36

there is no black and white there's

2:38

Shades of Gray and I think we all need

2:42

to sit there and look at things in terms

2:44

of we all are biased individuals and

2:48

this is not a bad thing this is not a

2:50

bad thing because not everybody should

2:53

grow up the same way not everybody

2:55

should learn things the same way not

2:57

everybody should think the same way

2:59

because if we we do we have group think

3:00

and we never

3:02

evolve different ideas different thought

3:05

patterns different ways of looking at

3:08

things enable us to grow as human beings

3:12

as societies and as a

3:15

planet see you let's na on this ah okay

3:20

so you it's so funny the thing about

3:22

when you grow up with a belief system in

3:26

your own internal nuclear family and

3:28

then you extend that out into other

3:30

communities right so for those that are

3:31

religious then you got your religious

3:33

communities for those that are maybe

3:35

intellectual communities whatever right

3:37

or what other whatever have

3:40

you I think the whole idea of you know

3:45

this whole belief system thing is if you

3:48

can be open enough to respect that there

3:52

are other perspectives you'll be fine

3:55

life is going to be fine for you I think

3:57

it's when you run into the the belief

3:59

that no my way is the

4:01

highway to truth truthiness and I'm

4:05

going to condemn others for not being on

4:08

this train that's a problem because now

4:10

you're meddling into other people lives

4:13

because you want to um exol the virtues

4:16

of your belief system now granted I'm

4:18

not trying to say one way or the other

4:21

I'm at full disclosure I'm actually not

4:23

religious at all I was actually taught

4:25

to be respectful of all religions and to

4:28

judge people based on their merits right

4:30

I mean that the whole idea of like the

4:31

Ten Commandments really is pretty

4:34

Universal between all religions you know

4:37

I mean i' like to think so but um pretty

4:40

confident it is and that's a human thing

4:42

that's a Humanity thing so if you could

4:44

be a decent human whatever your belief

4:46

systems are if that makes your whole

4:48

self and soul happy and

4:52

whole um then then you're on the right

4:54

path for you you know and I think that's

4:56

ultimately what like again belief

4:58

systems in General should provide is to

5:01

give you that Solace to give you that

5:03

comfort that you are leading the path

5:05

that you want to lead that's going to

5:07

keep you happy and you know keep you on

5:10

that path of you know to lead toward

5:12

success to have enriched relationships

5:14

and lives that you

5:16

define have at it so I mean

5:20

like yeah I I I I I have been in so many

5:24

political and religious conversations I

5:27

try to avoid them like the plague

5:28

because my My

5:31

ultimate answer I guess to that type of

5:34

debate is hey if it makes you happy and

5:37

whole my friend I'm happy for you you

5:40

may hate me because I don't agree with

5:42

everything that you say but you know

5:44

what I found something common that we

5:46

can appreciate even though we

5:48

fundamentally have different

5:50

perspectives that's my that makes me

5:52

happy in life is to know I cannot

5:55

control your opinions nor do I have any

5:57

desire to try to control any of your

5:59

opin opinions so therefore I'm actually

6:01

happy because I don't care to try to

6:03

control your your

6:05

opinions well it's being secure in your

6:07

own beliefs is that and being but and

6:10

and not being threatened by

6:12

others

6:14

because how other people interpret a

6:20

situation if it's different the way that

6:22

you interpret the

6:25

situation that could be a point of

6:27

learning for you and a point of interest

6:29

for you I'll never forget I was in

6:31

university and I had a professor that

6:33

was a statistics professor and he swore

6:37

up and down the statistics were God and

6:40

that there was one absolute truth based

6:43

on statistics statistics did not lie

6:46

there was only one way of looking at

6:47

this this is statistics so I wrote a

6:50

paper and halfway up the paper I I took

6:54

the set of statistics and I and I and I

6:57

I proved a point and then I spent the

7:00

back half of the paper disproving the

7:02

that same that that same Theory based on

7:05

the exact same statistics the question

7:08

is is it is that are we 30 you know is

7:12

it 30% male and 70% female or is it or

7:16

or is it 7 70% female and 30% male what

7:19

what what is what is the uh what is do

7:22

do 30 30% of people believe in it or 70%

7:26

of people dis disbelieve it both are

7:28

true yeah both are true you know whether

7:32

you depends on on how you want to take a

7:35

look at that set of facts and interpret

7:38

them for yourselves because it makes you

7:40

feel better and it and it feeds into

7:43

your narrative into your bias into your

7:46

sense of

7:47

selfworth and how you interpret things

7:50

and how somebody else interprets them

7:52

are different as you said where I have a

7:54

problem is when you try to shove your

7:57

beliefs down my throat and tell me that

8:00

my way is the right way your way is

8:03

wrong which makes you evil and makes you

8:05

wrong and I and I and and de and you're

8:09

delegitimized because you don't believe

8:11

what I believe yeah and I think that

8:13

that's what the where we have a problem

8:15

whether it's in in our personal lives in

8:18

society in our religion in our

8:19

government or whatever it's when we

8:22

spend more time trying to disprove

8:24

somebody else and show that they're

8:26

wrong than prove that we're right I

8:29

think we've devolved as a society 100% I

8:33

agree do you think it's lack of empathy

8:35

or lack of curiosity to research for

8:39

yourself I think it's

8:41

both I I think that we here's the thing

8:46

let's take social media for as a perfect

8:48

example even even take look at Google

8:51

for a perfect example how we put in the

8:54

word search determines on what we get

8:57

out yeah how how we ask the question

9:01

determines the answers we're going to

9:03

get that's chat P too dude that's chat

9:07

GPT how we you know the people that we

9:11

continually like and the and the and the

9:13

things that we continually see on

9:15

LinkedIn bring us more I you know I've

9:18

been following a few threads on YouTube

9:20

and watching a whole bunch of videos

9:21

lately and guess what surprisingly

9:24

enough a whole bunch new videos show up

9:26

with the exact same thought process in

9:28

the same set of Ideal start showing up

9:30

in my YouTube feed how does that happen

9:34

you know we're all sitting there slaves

9:37

to an algorithm and the question is do

9:41

we buy into it and sit there say Okay

9:43

since this is the stuff that we're

9:44

seeing all the time this must be the

9:46

only thing that's right or do we say

9:49

this is a Viewpoint maybe I should take

9:52

the time and look for other viewpoints

9:54

to see is there another way of looking

9:55

at this is there a different way I could

9:58

ask the question

9:59

that's going to get me different results

10:01

if I ask you know if I start looking at

10:04

people with different viewpoints on

10:05

LinkedIn am I going to start getting you

10:08

know more stuff in my feed that has that

10:10

might be contrary to my own views but

10:13

I'm going to learn something that that I

10:14

hadn't seen or I'm going to gain

10:15

insights that I haven't seen before we

10:18

need to push

10:20

ourselves and I and the question is is

10:22

that curiosity is that empathy whatever

10:24

I think it's human nature and I think we

10:28

we look for opinions and we look for the

10:33

comfort of the people that believe what

10:35

we believe because it gives us a sense

10:37

of self-worth and it's a lot more

10:39

comfortable to do that than peer around

10:42

the corner and look at ideas and

10:45

ideologies and philosophies that may not

10:48

be congruent with our own personal

10:54

views

10:56

look what I find interesting is the

10:59

older I've gotten and I think it's like

11:02

you say human

11:03

nature we get more set in our ways and I

11:06

think maybe that's why you and I yes we

11:09

are of a certain

11:11

age but I do think we're I do think a

11:15

lot of folks my age actually and I would

11:17

like to think we're different than you

11:19

know what other previous generation but

11:22

I I feel like if if we could just stay

11:25

strong and staying open and curious like

11:28

I said of to say maybe my thought

11:31

process is going to have to evolve a

11:32

little bit case in point I'm not talking

11:35

religion politics okay what I am talking

11:37

about is technology all right so there

11:40

are some individuals are like I am

11:42

technophobic okay that's great but you

11:44

know what if you just slightly just

11:46

slightly calm down a little bit we're

11:49

probably more technologically inclined

11:51

than we believe we are now I know I sold

11:55

technology for 20 plus years but let me

11:56

tell you peoples if I can solve your

11:58

problem technically you've got bigger

11:59

issues with your it Department okay it's

12:01

flat out but but but as a user as a

12:05

consumer of tech technology there's a

12:08

lot we know that you challenged this 20

12:11

years ago we wouldn't no one would know

12:13

you just kind of you kind of learn it by

12:16

practice and maybe that's what maybe

12:18

that's our maybe that's our end result

12:19

of our conversation is is like hey

12:22

validate you know research and practice

12:25

and maybe that's what we can do to help

12:27

with our bias convers ations and our

12:29

viewpoints and maybe our ability to have

12:32

that kind of communication to one

12:33

another where we are not going to we are

12:36

not going to fundamentally agree like

12:38

you and I agree on a lot but there's

12:40

some little small things that we don't

12:42

agree on and it's like you know what I

12:43

don't hate you for it but I do know I

12:45

will never talk to you about that topic

12:47

if you want to stay friends right like

12:50

you

12:51

know but that's that's but but it's

12:54

interesting what you say about

12:56

technology here's an interesting

12:58

statistics

13:01

we understand and utilize 5 to

13:04

8% of our current Tech St stack whatever

13:07

it is doesn't matter what level you are

13:10

90 to 95% of people use 5 to 8% of their

13:15

current Tech stack so think about in

13:18

Microsoft

13:19

Word if you're only using five to eight%

13:22

of what that technology can actually

13:25

do that's 90 plus% of the technology

13:28

that you're stay away from because

13:29

you're scared of it yeah because you

13:31

haven't you're not curious enough to sit

13:33

there go oh if I press this button what

13:35

happens if I do this what happens guess

13:38

what save button is a beautiful thing

13:41

you save and then play and I think we

13:43

need to sit there and look for ways

13:49

to play

13:51

ideologically in a safe Zone and be able

13:54

to sit there and realize

13:56

that most times the world doesn't hang

13:59

in the balance most of the time we can

14:02

have conversations with people and say

14:04

you know what let's leave that one alone

14:08

you know we've hit a hot button we've

14:09

we've hit a button where obviously both

14:11

of us you know are are vehemently

14:14

disagreeing with each other maybe let's

14:17

agree to disagree yeah but on the vast

14:20

majority of things it's healthy to have

14:23

that conversation and we need to learn

14:25

and we need to have the ability to have

14:27

that conversation and learn from each

14:29

other and verify each other and and back

14:31

up our own you know

14:33

viewpoints to actually prove to

14:36

ourselves that what we believe is

14:38

actually

14:40

valid or if it's just something that

14:42

we've thought all our lives because

14:44

somebody else told us that way that's

14:46

how it is yeah

14:48

I I

14:51

agree so let's leave it

14:54

there I'm Ben I'm CA and I'm glad we

14:58

agree to

15:00

disagree we'll see you
