Shownotes

The central premise of this podcast episode revolves around the stark contrast between cultural expectations of comfort and the authentic demands of discipleship as articulated in the Christian faith. We assert unequivocally that the journey of following Jesus is not one characterized by ease or self-indulgence, but rather a challenging path that necessitates self-denial and the willingness to embrace discomfort. I delve into the pervasive misconceptions surrounding faith, particularly the erroneous notion that faith in Christ guarantees an uncomplicated life. We candidly discuss the necessity for men to confront the distractions and false securities that impede their spiritual growth, urging a radical reevaluation of what it truly means to carry one's cross. Our discourse aims to catalyze a transformative awakening, compelling listeners to relinquish their hold on superficial comforts in favor of a deeper, more authentic relationship with God.

In this compelling episode of Discipleship Decoded, the host Malden Mitchell addresses the pervasive issue of superficial faith that has infiltrated modern Christianity. He asserts that many individuals have been misled by a diluted gospel that promotes the idea of an effortless Christian life, devoid of trials and tribulations. Through a forthright examination of scriptural truths, Mitchell dismantles these misconceptions, drawing listeners' attention to the core tenets of discipleship that demand both sacrifice and a radical reorientation of one's life toward following Christ. He emphasizes that true discipleship is not merely about self-improvement or comfort but involves a profound transformation that requires the relinquishment of one's old self, aligned with the biblical directive to take up one’s cross daily.

Mitchell engages the audience in a critical reflection on what they are safeguarding in their lives—comfort, pride, and societal validation. He provocatively questions whether their pursuits are hindering their spiritual growth and authenticity in their relationship with God. The host employs a blend of personal anecdotes and scriptural references to illustrate the inner turmoil many face when confronted with the call to a deeper faith. He encourages listeners to confront their fears and to embrace the difficult yet rewarding journey of surrendering to God's will, illustrating that true freedom comes from relinquishing the very things they seek to protect.

As the episode progresses, Mitchell underscores the importance of community in the discipleship journey. He exhorts men to seek accountability and to engage in genuine relationships that foster spiritual growth rather than mere comfort. The dialogue culminates in a powerful invitation for transformation, challenging listeners to step out of their comfort zones and into a life of authentic faith. By the end of the episode, the message is clear: true discipleship is a call to die—figuratively and literally—to one’s old self in order to fully embrace the life that God has in store, thus fostering a faith that is deep, real, and impactful.

Takeaways:

  • This podcast challenges listeners to confront the uncomfortable truths about discipleship.
  • The host emphasizes that true discipleship requires the death of personal comfort and pride.
  • Listeners are encouraged to identify what they are protecting instead of surrendering to God.
  • We must recognize that following Christ involves a sacrifice that transcends cultural expectations.

I'm your host, Malden Mitchell.

Speaker A:

Now let's get into it.

Speaker A:

Hello everyone everywhere, and welcome to another episode of Discipleship Decoded.

Speaker A:

Let's be real.

Speaker A:

Most of y' all have been sold a lie.

Speaker A:

A watered down, sweet, sticky, sugar coated prosperity gospel packaged American dream with Jesus sprinkled on the top.

Speaker A:

They told you to follow Christ and life gets easier.

Speaker A:

They lied.

Speaker A:

Jesus didn't lie.

Speaker A:

But he also didn't die to upgrade your lifestyle.

Speaker A:

He died to end your life so his life could begin in you.

Speaker A:

You've been treating the cross like some kind of good luck charm instead of what it really is.

Speaker A:

An execution.

Speaker A:

Dev.

Speaker A:

Luke, chapter 9, verse 23 says it like this in the Christian Standard Bible.

Speaker A:

Jesus speaking.

Speaker A:

No filter, no fluff.

Speaker A:

He says that if anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily and follow me.

Speaker A:

Not when you feel like it, not when it's convenient, not when your mama's watching.

Speaker A:

See, the Bible doesn't whisper, so why should you?

Speaker A:

Man, I remember sitting in church thinking I was saved, thinking I was sanctified, thinking I was all that in a bag of chips.

Speaker A:

But I was living for my comfort, my plans, my dreams, my reputation with a little Jesus sprinkled on the side.

Speaker A:

Regrettably, I was treating God like a cosmic butler.

Speaker A:

Hey, God, bless this.

Speaker A:

Hey God, fix that.

Speaker A:

Hey God, make my life work.

Speaker A:

But never.

Speaker A:

Hey God, kill what needs to die inside of me.

Speaker A:

I mean, absolutely never.

Speaker A:

I never said, hey God, crucify my pride.

Speaker A:

Never.

Speaker A:

I never said hey God, I surrender everything.

Speaker A:

Family.

Speaker A:

I was trying to live while claiming to follow the one who died.

Speaker A:

And I'm here to tell you from experience that you can't do both.

Speaker A:

You can't do both.

Speaker A:

But here's the most thing that men don't realize.

Speaker A:

The thing that you're protecting, the comfort that you're clinging to, the reputation that you're guarding, is the very thing that is keeping you from the life that God has for you.

Speaker A:

I mean, we so many distractions, man chasing women, money, fame, status, feeling as though we got the right label on our clothes, the right logo on our shoes, the freshest haircut, beard lined up, or whatever you wear.

Speaker A:

We felt like these are the things that give us life, but they don't.

Speaker A:

And if you be honest with yourself, the things that you pursue, the things that you say, that makes you happy.

Speaker A:

Even when you acquire these things, whether it be, quote unquote, your dream girl or your dream woman, your dream car, your dream house, your dream salary, when you acquire all those things, there still is a God sized hole that is in your heart or in your spirit that only he can feel.

Speaker A:

Once we commit and once we submit and surrender to the things that he wants.

Speaker A:

And some of us, externally, we look like a man.

Speaker A:

We have the stature, the height, the muscle, the muscle mask and all those things.

Speaker A:

But inside, we're still spiritual little boys.

Speaker A:

And so when we come back, I'm going to expose what you're really protecting and why it's got to die.

Speaker A:

Don't go nowhere, because what I'm about to tell you is going to be revolutionary, but it's going to actually set you free.

Speaker A:

This is Discipleship Decoded, and we'll be right back.

Speaker A:

Welcome back to Discipleship Decoded.

Speaker A:

Before the break, I told you that you can't live for yourself and follow the one who died.

Speaker A:

Now I need you to get real honest about what it is that you're actually protecting.

Speaker A:

And I'm going to tell you that this is about to get real uncomfortable.

Speaker A:

You're going to be switching around in your seat, but.

Speaker A:

But surgery always hurts before it heals.

Speaker A:

So family, I want you to check yourself right now.

Speaker A:

What are you trying to protect?

Speaker A:

What are you holding on to that you are calling it being wise, but it's actually really just fear.

Speaker A:

You keep saying over and over again, God knows my heart.

Speaker A:

And yeah, he does.

Speaker A:

And that's the problem.

Speaker A:

Your heart is protecting what the cross is supposed to kill.

Speaker A:

It's supposed to kill your comfort zone, your reputation, this insatiable need to be right, the insecurity that you need to be seen and your need to be safe.

Speaker A:

So I want you to stop lying to yourself.

Speaker A:

You are not confused about God's will.

Speaker A:

You just don't like what it cost.

Speaker A:

You ain't waiting on God's timing, but what you're actually doing is you're negotiating with God's requirement.

Speaker A:

But I'm here to tell you, bro, out of love, stop making excuses and start making room for God.

Speaker A:

See, culture told you to build yourself up, but Christ called you to lay yourself down.

Speaker A:

Culture told you to find yourself, but Christ actually told you to lose yourself.

Speaker A:

Culture told you to live your best life, but Christ said die to your old life.

Speaker A:

Culture gave you self help, but God gives you, check this out.

Speaker A:

Self death you got to pick aside.

Speaker A:

There is no middle ground at the cross.

Speaker A:

You and I both know that if you try to straddle the fence, it's a delicate tightrope because there is some vital, sensitive areas that can be exposed if we slip and if we lose our balance.

Speaker A:

So here's what you're going to do today.

Speaker A:

You're going to stop calling yourself A Christian.

Speaker A:

If you ain't willing to be crucified, get honest about what you're protecting.

Speaker A:

Write it down, name it, and man up and face it.

Speaker A:

Find one area in your life where you've been choosing comfort over obedience and surrender it.

Speaker A:

Today.

Speaker A:

Not tomorrow, not next week, but today.

Speaker A:

And you got to start asking different questions instead of God.

Speaker A:

Why is this so hard?

Speaker A:

Ask God.

Speaker A:

What are you trying to kill in me?

Speaker A:

Maybe instead of asking God to make it easier, ask God to make me stronger.

Speaker A:

Before I give you the final steps and before I tell you exactly what to do next, I need to talk to someone specifically, someone who's been listening and feels like this message was written just for them.

Speaker A:

Because when I come back, I'm going to speak directly to your soul and give you the gospel truth that is going to change everything.

Speaker A:

So stay with me, because this next part is where transformation begins.

Speaker A:

We'll be right back.

Speaker C:

Men everywhere are locking in with discipleship decoded because they're done with surface level faith and fake strength.

Speaker C:

They're tired of carrying silent battles.

Speaker C:

Addiction, anger, broken identity.

Speaker C:

And they're finding real answers, real freedom and real brotherhood.

Speaker C:

This isn't about hype.

Speaker C:

It's about healing.

Speaker C:

It's about becoming the man God designed you to be.

Speaker C:

So if you're ready to grow, ready to change, and ready to lead, tune in and subscribe to discipleship decoded because one thing is clear.

Speaker C:

Comfort kills calling.

Speaker A:

We're back.

Speaker A:

I'm not yelling right now.

Speaker A:

I'm talking to the man who knows this message was meant for him, the one who's been playing church instead of following Christ.

Speaker A:

This moment, right here, right now, is your invitation for transformation.

Speaker A:

I'm talking to the man who's been praying for breakthrough but won't break through his own pride.

Speaker A:

The one who prays in secret and fights in silence.

Speaker A:

This moment, right here, right now, is your invitation to stop surviving and start dying so that you can finally start living.

Speaker A:

Times are such that we've isolated ourselves with social media and all these other vices and all these other substitutes to make us feel as though that we are progressing in our Christian walk.

Speaker A:

I mean, you.

Speaker A:

You can turn on YouTube.

Speaker A:

I got a YouTube channel, so I'm not hating on YouTube.

Speaker A:

But you can turn on YouTube, you can go on a podcast, any number of podcast directories, and you can get so much Christian content that if you're not careful, as believers and as brothers, we can tend to isolate ourselves.

Speaker A:

And sometimes we hurt and we suffer in silence because of the embarrassment of where we think we should be, as a result, as to where we are.

Speaker A:

And we never reach out for help.

Speaker A:

But you got to get around people that will hold you accountable to death, not just to life.

Speaker A:

People who will call you higher and not just make you feel better.

Speaker A:

Luke 9:23.

Speaker A:

You need to read that every morning for the next 30 days and ask God, what cross am I supposed to carry today?

Speaker A:

And here's the gospel truth.

Speaker A:

Jesus was crucified so that you could be crucified with him.

Speaker A:

Jesus was buried so that your old life could be buried with him.

Speaker A:

Jesus was raised so that you can walk in the newness of life, but you can't have the resurrection without the crucifixion.

Speaker A:

You can't have the power without the death.

Speaker A:

You cannot have the glory without the grave.

Speaker A:

And so you don't need another word.

Speaker A:

You need to surrender.

Speaker A:

You ain't waiting on God, but he's waiting on you.

Speaker A:

The cross is calling your name.

Speaker A:

The question is, will you answer if this hit you and you're tired of playing games with God?

Speaker A:

And if you want to be a part of an authentic community, a true brotherhood where men get real about getting right, here's what I want you to do.

Speaker A:

Leave me a comment below, and I'm going to give you a number for our small group called the Huddle.

Speaker A:

And I got to be honest, it is a screening because we want men to be a part of this who are going to be, first of all, committed, that can be honest, that can be transparent, and that believe that the Bible is the final authority in their lives.

Speaker A:

This is not a click.

Speaker A:

This is not a male gossiping section.

Speaker A:

But it is where we rip off the band aid, we rip off the mask, and we give you the word of God as a bomb, as a salve, as an ointment to heal the brokenness and the wounds that you've experienced as a child, those areas that you've never been allowed to mature in, to grow up in.

Speaker A:

This is what this group is for.

Speaker A:

So we don't do soft.

Speaker A:

We don't do fake.

Speaker A:

We don't do comfortable.

Speaker A:

We do crucified.

Speaker A:

And brothers, if you're ready to die so that you can finally live, then we're here to walk with you, man.

Speaker A:

God loves you so much, more than you could ever know.

Speaker A:

And it doesn't matter what you have gone through, God loves you, man.

Speaker A:

So stop suffering in silence and start living in community, man.

Speaker A:

I know what it is to look around and to pour into so many people.

Speaker A:

And then when it comes time, to you to be poured into.

Speaker A:

There is no one around.

Speaker A:

This is discipleship, decoded, where we break down the code that they didn't want you to crack.

Speaker A:

Until next time, get crucified or stay comfortable.

Speaker A:

But you can't do both.

Speaker A:

Remember, comfort always kills calling.

Speaker A:

Until next week.

Speaker A:

I love you and God bless my brothers.

Speaker A:

Sa Sam.
