One of the quickest ways to sound less natural on your podcast is trying to sound like a podcaster.
Speaker:
00:00:06
You've probably heard it before. Suddenly the voice gets a little bit deeper.
Speaker:
00:00:10
Everything becomes more polished. And every sentence sounds like it was written
Speaker:
00:00:14
for a presentation instead of a conversation.
Speaker:
00:00:17
The funny thing is, that's often what makes a podcast feel less engaging.
Speaker:
00:00:21
Because podcasts are a really personal medium.
Speaker:
00:00:24
Your audience is listening while they're driving, walking the dog,
Speaker:
00:00:28
making dinner or getting some exercise.
Speaker:
00:00:31
And because of that, it feels much more like a conversation than a presentation. Or at least it should.
Speaker:
00:00:36
So instead of thinking about how you should sound, think about how you'd explain
Speaker:
00:00:40
the same thing to a friend over a coffee.
Speaker:
00:00:42
Because that's usually when you're at your most natural and your most interesting.
Speaker:
00:00:46
Think about it. You probably wouldn't use bigger words than you need.
Speaker:
00:00:50
You wouldn't worry if you paused for a second to collect your thoughts.
Speaker:
00:00:53
And you certainly wouldn't try to sound like a radio announcer.
Speaker:
00:00:57
For example, when I'm recording this podcast, I don't try to sound any different
Speaker:
00:01:01
from how I'd answer a question from another podcaster.
Speaker:
00:01:04
So if I stumble over a word but the point is still clear, I'll probably leave
Speaker:
00:01:08
it in. If I naturally pause before making a point, that's okay too.
Speaker:
00:01:13
Those little moments remind listeners there's a real person behind the microphone.
Speaker:
00:01:17
So yes, work on your delivery, speak clearly, get more comfortable behind the microphone.
Speaker:
00:01:23
But don't lose your personality along the way.
Speaker:
00:01:26
Aim to sound like the best version of yourself not someone else's idea of what
Speaker:
00:01:30
a podcaster should sound like because people might discover your podcast because
Speaker:
00:01:34
of the topic but they'll come back because they enjoy spending time with you.
Speaker:
00:01:39
Until the next time, happy podcasting.
