:This is Pastor pj and I'm
joined with Pastor Rod.
3
:Yeah.
4
:Do you think they believed us?
5
:I think so.
6
:I think that was a pretty convincing
Pastor PJ and Pastor Rod impression.
7
:Yeah, I don't think anybody's
doubting that it's truly us,
8
:pastor PJ and Pastor Rod.
9
:With AI these days, you
can do anything you want.
10
:Maybe you can make anybody
sound however you want.
11
:You can manipulate anything, but yeah.
12
:All joking aside, this is actually,
I am just in case you were fooled.
13
:This is actually Pastor Mark
and I am joined not by Pastor
14
:Rod, but with Director Lewis.
15
:Director Lewis.
16
:How are you?
17
:I am doing great.
18
:I'm excited to be on a podcast.
19
:So I don't know if you know this,
but my mom has been telling me for
20
:years that I should start a podcast.
21
:That I should be on a podcast.
22
:So if you're listening, mom, I hope
you're proud of me because I made
23
:it, I finally made it onto a podcast.
24
:So, hi Mom.
25
:I'm sure she's very proud of you.
26
:I'm sure she's proud of you as we all are.
27
:Alright let's dive in.
28
:We're gonna keep things
as normal as we can.
29
:We're going to continue working
through our Daily Bible Reading Plan.
30
:And today we are in Genesis 18 and 19.
31
:So, in this passage, we pick up in
the middle of a narrative sequence
32
:of God's promise to Abraham.
33
:Very important promise.
34
:What is that promise?
35
:Just give us the highlights.
36
:Yeah.
37
:Abraham Promise comes down to three
things, land, offspring, and blessing.
38
:Those are the three components
that really you see pop up
39
:all over the place in Genesis.
40
:We know that Genesis 12, 15 and 17
are kind of the highlights of that.
41
:So land, offspring and blessing, those
are the three things you wanna look for
42
:when you think of the promise to Abraham.
43
:That's right.
44
:And here in verse.
45
:One of 18, we see an appearance of
the Lord and he's coming to Abraham.
46
:But he comes in a crazy way
and there's some debate about
47
:exactly what's going on here.
48
:But in verse 18, it says, the Lord
appeared to him, to Abraham as
49
:he sat at the door of his tent.
50
:And then in verse two, it says there
were three men standing in front of him.
51
:Who are these three men?
52
:Well, not to just immediately
disagree with Pastor PJ and
53
:Pastor Rod, who I Great.
54
:Start.
55
:Great start to the podcast,
pastor Mark, who I believe they
56
:both think this is a Christoph.
57
:Well, to be specific, a Christoph
and two angels, meaning.
58
:A pre-incarnate appearance of
Christ alongside two angels.
59
:But I'm actually gonna, I'm gonna actually
contend that these three men, these
60
:three angels are representatives of God.
61
:And in fact, they carry
some of the glory of God.
62
:They carry his words, which is why
they're able to say, the Lord says,
63
:Yahweh says but I'm not convinced.
64
:That these three men are, or they're
certainly not all the Trinity, and
65
:I'm not convinced that one of them
stands alone as a Christophany type.
66
:What do you think, Lewis, what's your
conviction on this particular passage?
67
:Honestly, my biggest question about
the verse you just read is how do
68
:a, how does a tent have a door?
69
:'cause I don't think, in my
experience, tents don't have doors.
70
:How do you get in a tent?
71
:There's a flap, but there's not a door.
72
:Like is Abraham like bringing, this is
like a Harry Potter tent with like hinges.
73
:Anyway, that was my biggest
question from verse one, but
74
:I'm glad that's your takeaway.
75
:If you're here for the important
stuff like Pastor Mark is how big
76
:of a deal do you think that is?
77
:Whether this is a pre
incarnate Christ or not?
78
:I don't think it's a huge deal.
79
:I think it's interesting and I think
it's important that we understand
80
:some of these aspects of the Bible,
or at least seek to understand them.
81
:I'm not sure that many of these
things will fully understand
82
:this side of eternity, but
83
:I think it's worth investigating.
84
:I think it's worth investigating and
I think to understand some of these
85
:things wrongly does put us in peril.
86
:So just for example, if you looked at this
and said these three men were the Trinity.
87
:Mm-hmm.
88
:Meaning the Father, son, and
the Holy Spirit, I think.
89
:I think that's actually gonna cause
some hermeneutical, some the way you
90
:read the Bible, some problems with that.
91
:So I think some of these things are,
making sure that we steer away from the
92
:problem, steer away from the issues, and
maybe we don't quite land on exactly the
93
:exact right thing of what's going on.
94
:And I think that's okay.
95
:And I think that's why Pastor PJ
and Pastor Rod, at least last year
96
:on the podcast, I went back and
checked that's why they can land
97
:on this and say one of these three.
98
:Is a Christophany and
the other two are angels.
99
:Whereas I'm gonna say no, maybe
not, but we could steer away from
100
:some of the issues that might arise.
101
:And that is indeed important.
102
:So what, you didn't answer
the question though.
103
:What, where I was hoping
you would've notice that.
104
:Where are you gonna land on this?
105
:I I'm just gonna say, I'm gonna
agree with my pastor on this.
106
:That's my take.
107
:I don't really have a
strong opinion either way.
108
:I think there's good
evidence for both sides.
109
:If you would say, this isn't
Jesus, this is just an angel.
110
:I think the strongest evidence is
that Jesus is never called an angel.
111
:He's never a messenger.
112
:He's always God.
113
:Whereas the strongest
evidence for saying this is.
114
:In fact the Lord and not just an
angel would be other appearances
115
:of angels like in Revelation.
116
:When an angel appears, John worships the
angel, and then the angel says, Hey, stop.
117
:Get up, stop worshiping me.
118
:And that doesn't happen here.
119
:Abraham bows down to the
earth in verse two, and.
120
:The angel doesn't say, get up.
121
:He lets him do that.
122
:Right.
123
:So those are kind of the, the
two to me, most compelling pieces
124
:of evidence for either side.
125
:Yeah.
126
:And I have to concede that is
the weak point on my position.
127
:So what do these angels bring?
128
:What does what do these three men bring?
129
:They bring a reiteration of the promise.
130
:They bring a reiteration of the promise
and a little bit more specificity.
131
:So in verse 10.
132
:It says, the Lord said, I will surely
return to you about this time next year.
133
:And Sarah, your wife shall have a son.
134
:Now here's something really
interesting is that Sarah hears this.
135
:And she laughs.
136
:She laughs when she hears this promise
and in verse 12, she says to herself,
137
:she says, after I'm worn out and my
Lord is old, shall I have pleasure?
138
:So shall I have this baby
that is promised to me.
139
:I think it's interesting because
in yesterday's Bible reading
140
:in verse 17 of chapter 17.
141
:Abraham also laughs.
142
:It says, then Abraham,
and this is verse 17.
143
:Then Abraham fell on his face
and laughed and said to himself.
144
:Shall a child be born to a man who
is a hundred years old, shall share,
145
:shall share shall shall Sarah tongue
twister Sarah and her seashell,
146
:who is 90 years old, bear a child.
147
:Now they both laugh, but in Romans,
what does Romans say about Abraham?
148
:Romans gives a really positive
impression of Abraham.
149
:Romans four.
150
:Abraham is a rock star.
151
:He trusts God, he believes in him.
152
:He counted his righteousness.
153
:And so it's surprising to see
Abraham and Sarah react the same way.
154
:Now, do you think that reaction
maybe can be interpreted differently?
155
:I think it can.
156
:I think it can.
157
:And I think what you see here is one
Abraham falls on his face, right?
158
:He falls on his face before the Lord.
159
:And yes, he does laugh, but I
think you see a heart posture
160
:that's different than Sarah, right?
161
:Sarah says to herself right in quiet.
162
:And I think the way the author
is presenting this she's doing it
163
:in a kind of almost spiteful way.
164
:Abraham falls on his face, and then
when Abraham gets his response,
165
:he immediately gets up and does
what God instructs him to do.
166
:What does Sarah do?
167
:She laughs and then when she's confronted
about that laughter, she denies it.
168
:Mm-hmm.
169
:And she says, I did not laugh.
170
:So I think you see a contrast in heart
posture and Romans four doesn't address.
171
:Sarah necessarily, but I think
you can see you can see the doubt
172
:in Abraham that is quickly turned
into faith through this narrative.
173
:And you don't necessarily
see that with Sarah.
174
:And I think we have to
respond in the same way.
175
:Sometimes we're gonna hear promises
from the Lord that shock us.
176
:Mm-hmm.
177
:That, that make us go what
are you talking about?
178
:The question is, how do
you then respond to it?
179
:Do you respond to it in faith and
trust, or do you respond to it with
180
:a haughty arrogant, maybe even bitter
heart like you see Sarah do here.
181
:We do see Sarah though, definitely
redeem herself in a lot of
182
:ways throughout the rest of.
183
:This book.
184
:So, we don't wanna just be like,
Abraham good, Sarah, bad that right?
185
:Yes, that's right.
186
:The Charact characters in the Bible.
187
:There's only one of them who's good.
188
:Right.
189
:And that's God.
190
:Mm-hmm.
191
:That's right.
192
:And the rest are usually a mixed bag.
193
:Even, the heroes like
Abraham and Moses and David.
194
:They're not Jesus.
195
:They're not the real hero of the story.
196
:And so it is I think always encouraging
for me when I read passages like
197
:this, where you see who we would.
198
:Look to, in the New Testament, they
describe Sarah as a woman of faith.
199
:She's a strong believer That's right.
200
:And she has moments of weakness,
moments of sin and unbelief.
201
:And so that's always encouraging
for me to see these characters that
202
:are praised by the Lord in his word.
203
:I.
204
:To see them for who they really are.
205
:They're just regular people who trust God.
206
:But ultimately the reason they trust
God is because they're sinners.
207
:That's right.
208
:And God ultimately forgives sinners.
209
:Mm-hmm.
210
:Right.
211
:He forgives those who have faith.
212
:The faith of Abraham and that
faith is the faith that Sarah has.
213
:And it's the faith that, in fact, in
a slightly different way, but it's the
214
:same essence, that same faith is what
you and I can have which is the means
215
:by which we can be saved from sin from.
216
:From our distrust, from our lack
of faith in the promises of God.
217
:Definitely.
218
:Okay, so then there's this
interesting section about.
219
:A conversation that God has with
Abraham, and he begins to discuss
220
:with him the destruction of Sodom.
221
:It's amazing here that we can
even see a conversation like this
222
:between God and a mere human.
223
:Mm-hmm.
224
:Abraham certainly is an important
human, but he's still a mere human.
225
:And it speaks to God's kindness to.
226
:Abraham and to us as well, right?
227
:To reveal to us that he yes, is an
immutable God, an unchanging God,
228
:but he's also communicating here his
grace and his willingness to show
229
:mercy on even as the passage concludes
there's 10 that are found righteous.
230
:And he says he's not going to destroy
the city even on the account of just
231
:those 10, which is where we get into.
232
:Chapter 19, and in chapter 19 we
get to see the full effects of
233
:sin, the full depravity of humans.
234
:And I'm always reminded in
Genesis 19 of Romans one, you just.
235
:Get to see how the total
depravity of man comes out in
236
:these really nasty, nasty ways.
237
:Definitely.
238
:And there's obviously parallels
between Romans one and the
239
:sins that Sodom is committing.
240
:But before we get into chapter 19, I
do have a question about chapter 18.
241
:Something that I think a
lot of people reading would.
242
:Maybe come into their minds too is,
is God changing his mind here and
243
:how, what does it have to do with
his sovereignty and his immutability?
244
:Things like that.
245
:We know that God plans things
that God isn't impacted.
246
:Like he's not reacting
to things that we do.
247
:In the sense of we're not
gonna change God's mind.
248
:So is Abraham doing that?
249
:Is maybe, is our theology wrong?
250
:How would you answer
that kind of question?
251
:Yeah.
252
:I think it's important to recognize
that God is immutable, which is to say
253
:that he's unchanging if God changes.
254
:Then he can't actually love us, right?
255
:If God changes, then
his promises can change.
256
:It's an important distinction
that I think is really hard for us
257
:as humans to understand, because
we are mutable, we do change.
258
:And so this aspect of God being
immutable is in many ways.
259
:Kind of beyond our ability to grasp.
260
:And so what I think you see going
on here is God being kind to us.
261
:Theologians will often refer to this
sort of thing, and I'm not sure it's
262
:politically correct anymore, but the
term is, or the way of describing
263
:it, is that God is lisping to us.
264
:That he is helping us understand something
about him in a way that we can understand.
265
:God is not changing.
266
:He's not changing his mind.
267
:His decisions are not dependent on
Abraham, but through this narrative
268
:account, he's helping us understand
his mercy, his willingness to save.
269
:Sinners, right?
270
:He's willing to do these things and
he's demonstrating that through this.
271
:So there's more to be said, it's a complex
theological topic, but I do think we have
272
:to hold that God is an unchanging God and
that Abraham here is not changing God.
273
:But at the same time the way that we see
this is that God is changing his mind.
274
:That he is going from one opinion to
another, and that's God's way of helping
275
:us understand attributes of who he is.
276
:Yeah, definitely.
277
:I had a professor in my undergrad
actually illustrate this with a
278
:quiz that he had on our syllabus.
279
:He had this quiz planned and
he changed his mind, in the
280
:second month of the semester.
281
:Hey, I'm actually gonna take the quiz out.
282
:And his point was he planned
to take the quiz out.
283
:The whole time he was already planning
on changing his mind about the quiz.
284
:And so the way he illustrated to
us, he was sovereignly planning
285
:to change his mind, to avert his
judgment on us and to demonstrate
286
:what this might look like exactly.
287
:So that's how he illustrated it.
288
:And I found that really helpful of
he's planning to change his mind.
289
:He's planning, okay, this is what I'm
gonna have this conversation with Abraham.
290
:And Abraham is going to intercede in
some sense for the people of Sodom.
291
:And then God is going to choose to relent.
292
:And we see this with Moses
and the people of Israel.
293
:And you could even say, we see this with.
294
:Us Right.
295
:Our verdict is changed
from guilty to righteous.
296
:That's right.
297
:That's right.
298
:Alright, back to 19.
299
:And I did have another question before
chapter 19 is, sorry Pastor Mark.
300
:That's why I'm here.
301
:I'm here to ask questions and draw out
all the wisdom that God has given you.
302
:That's my goal here.
303
:So, would you read this
passage with your kids?
304
:That's a, I think a lot of families, a
lot of parents might have this question.
305
:They're reading the Bible together.
306
:Let's say you're committed to
reading God's word as a family
307
:in the New year, 2026, and then
you get two passages like this.
308
:What do you do?
309
:Do you read it?
310
:Do you stop?
311
:How do you handle this?
312
:Well, , let me go to
chapter 19 because Okay.
313
:it's even more poignant
in chapter 19, right?
314
:Mm-hmm.
315
:Where we see some of these.
316
:Heinous things.
317
:Yeah.
318
:Happen.
319
:Let me just give us a
little bit of overview.
320
:I know I trust that you read this
already, but in chapter 19, we're gonna
321
:actually see the destruction of Sodom,
but we're also gonna see the salvation
322
:of lot through the judgment of Sodom.
323
:So, two, two of the angels go to
Sodom and they are tasked with.
324
:Effectively saving a lot, and this is
where you get to some of these things
325
:that are, I don't know, unpleasant,
heinous, disgusting, and all of the above.
326
:I will refrain from making them super
clear here on the podcast, but the Bible
327
:is really clear about these things.
328
:Mm-hmm.
329
:The Bible does not.
330
:Hide from these things.
331
:Mm-hmm.
332
:It is very clear about this and it
is clear in other places as well.
333
:Even we reference Romans
chapter one, right?
334
:Yeah.
335
:Romans chapter one is clear
about some of the sins and some
336
:of the acts that are sinful.
337
:So should you read this with your kids?
338
:I'm gonna answer yes and with an
abstract, I'm gonna answer a yes.
339
:I believe the Bible is for all.
340
:I believe that scripture
is intended for all.
341
:You see that, and Timothy, you
may, it's very clear that scripture
342
:is breathed out by God and it is
profitable for all, without exception.
343
:There's not a caveat there that
says that it's only for adults or
344
:only people who are 16 or older.
345
:Mm-hmm.
346
:I also think we live in an age where
things are pretty sanitized, and I
347
:think if you were a child living even
a hundred years ago, but certainly
348
:500 years ago or a thousand years
ago, you're gonna be exposed to a lot
349
:more of these things at a younger age.
350
:I'm not making an argument that you should
be exposed to those things, but I do
351
:think we should be exposed to the Bible.
352
:And the Bible makes it very
clear how deadly sin is.
353
:And.
354
:I think that it's appropriate to read
some of these stories to your kids.
355
:Now, there's a caveat, which I
think you as a parent need to make
356
:a judgment call about the extent of
the explanations that you give to
357
:your kids on some of these things.
358
:You know your kids well, you
know what they need to know.
359
:And, you ought to know if you don't.
360
:And I know most of you do.
361
:You know, what your kids need to know.
362
:So when it comes to some of these
particulars about what is exactly
363
:going on I think you can become
more and more specific with your
364
:kids as they mature, as they grow
older, and as they have questions.
365
:And I think that's a helpful way of saying
like, what questions are your kids asking?
366
:Mm-hmm.
367
:Are they asking about particular words?
368
:Are they asking about particular acts?
369
:And I think you need to do your best
to give your kids honest answers
370
:realistic answers, truthful answers
when they have those questions.
371
:But I can tell you, my 4-year-old son
is not asking, all these very specific
372
:questions about these things, and I can
still teach him from a story like this.
373
:Now, I understand there's gonna be
some parents who think that this
374
:would not be appropriate, and I'm
gonna trust your judgment as a
375
:parent in this particular area.
376
:I think you need to know your
kids, and you need to make sure
377
:that they're hearing the gospel.
378
:There's gonna be some disagreement on
how to approach these things within
379
:the church, and we need to have charity
and love towards each other in such
380
:disagreements that, that we might have.
381
:But that's my opinion on the matter.
382
:Yeah, I think that's great.
383
:Like the, every, even in your own
family, every kid might be different.
384
:Some kids might have questions
at different ages, and some kids
385
:might have different friends who
expose them to different things.
386
:And there's so many.
387
:Situations as I had a friend who used
to say situations are situational.
388
:And so, the important thing is that you're
not hiding the essentials from them.
389
:That's right.
390
:That's right.
391
:And you can see the essentials
even in this story here.
392
:And one of them, as we wrap up Genesis
19, is how amazing it is that God saves.
393
:Really just one righteous person, right?
394
:Law doesn't want to go and the angel
has to rip him out of the city of Sodom.
395
:And Yahweh saves whether the saved
desire, salvation or not sometimes.
396
:And you can see that
very much evident here.
397
:You can also see how Yahweh is willing
to save even just one from this city.
398
:Lot's wife.
399
:It initially looks like maybe
it's four, but lot's wife
400
:looks back, turns into salt.
401
:And then at the very end of chapter 19
we see some of the more heinous acts
402
:that are committed by lots daughters.
403
:And yeah, so God is a God of salvation.
404
:Let's turn to Matthew seven.
405
:Matthew, excuse me.
406
:Matthew six.
407
:Matthew six.
408
:And we are, where, where are we
in Matthew six Lewis, Matthew six.
409
:The Sermon on the Mount.
410
:We're right in the middle of it.
411
:Yep.
412
:And Matthew six it's one of my
favorite chapters in the Bible.
413
:There's so much good stuff here.
414
:So we're actually probably gonna
go for another two hours on this
415
:podcast just to cover all of it.
416
:Alright, well let's cover at least
some of it and maybe not in two hours.
417
:Okay.
418
:Four hours.
419
:Let's work through it.
420
:So the first section.
421
:Is titled With the
Inspired Heading, right?
422
:Inspired Heading, giving to the Needy.
423
:So I actually took the headings
out of my logos, like layout.
424
:There's no headings.
425
:And then in my personal reading
I read a Bible with no headings.
426
:So that tells you, I think,
what I think about the headings.
427
:Well, nonetheless, the very
beginning of chapter six is
428
:indeed about giving to the needy.
429
:But it's more than that, right?
430
:We see that Jesus' command to us is that
we are it's a, it's matter of the heart.
431
:The command is that we are to
have a heart that is not about
432
:practicing our righteousness
before others to be seen by them.
433
:Right?
434
:I think it's easy as Christians
to look at the performative
435
:things because that's easier.
436
:It's easy to see what
we're doing on the outside.
437
:Mm-hmm.
438
:It's easy to see what others are
doing on the outside, but what we
439
:see throughout the Sermon on the
Mount, and again here, is that God
440
:is calling us to a heart attitude.
441
:So when we give to the needy, we
are to do it with a heart attitude
442
:that is seeking to please the
Lord and not to be seen by others.
443
:Right.
444
:Verse four says, and your father who
sees you in secret will reward you.
445
:Definitely.
446
:And that refrain is repeated with
prayer and with fasting as well.
447
:And I think certain on the mount is
so crucial to understanding the right,
448
:just how we do good works as Christians.
449
:Mm-hmm.
450
:It's all about the heart
like you were saying.
451
:I think something that's really
encouraged me from these passages is
452
:the idea of I think of God's justice
most of the time in a legal sense of
453
:he's going to punish the wicked people.
454
:But you can also think of God's
justice as he's gonna reward all
455
:the good things that his people do.
456
:That's right.
457
:Even if no one else in the world sees him.
458
:Right.
459
:Even if no one sees the way you pray
for your family members, even if no one
460
:sees how patient you are, even if no
one knows the things that you gave up on
461
:to, worship God or to love that person.
462
:God sees those things and he's ready.
463
:And that same with this
idea of prayer, right.
464
:God is, he's ready to meet
these people in prayer.
465
:That's right.
466
:Yeah.
467
:And I think one of the astounding
things to me about the Lord's
468
:Prayer as we get into this next
section is that it's really short.
469
:It blows my mind that the instructions
from God on how we are to pray.
470
:It can be done in a handful of seconds.
471
:Now, I'm not denying that we are
to also pray without ceasing.
472
:Mm-hmm.
473
:But I think we can get so
caught up with the Christianese.
474
:Mm-hmm.
475
:And the words that we're supposed
to say when we're praying and the
476
:phrases that we're supposed to.
477
:Pile up, right?
478
:Yeah.
479
:That we can confuse what
prayer is supposed to be.
480
:And again, it's a heart attitude, right?
481
:It is.
482
:It is a heart attitude of actually
wanting to talk to God, actually
483
:wanting to make requests of him
actually seeing him as God and talking
484
:to him like he's actually gone.
485
:And we can get in the
community group and be so.
486
:Quick to want to sound nice, wanna
sound pleasing, want to use the right
487
:phrases because other people are
listening to us when we pray and suddenly
488
:we're not actually praying at all.
489
:Mm-hmm.
490
:Suddenly we're just doing
as the Gentiles do right.
491
:And heaping up empty phrases.
492
:And we don't wanna be found
guilty of any such thing.
493
:Yeah.
494
:And for a deeper dive into the Lord's
Prayer, in the partners chapter on prayer,
495
:there's a really great breakdown step by
step of each phrase that kind of pulls
496
:out the principles behind the model
prayer, really for disciples of Jesus.
497
:Lewis, do you fast?
498
:Do I fast every night?
499
:I fast every night, and then
I break my fast every morning.
500
:See, you can't answer that.
501
:'cause if you do.
502
:Then you won't be doing
it in secret anymore.
503
:Mm-hmm.
504
:'cause it'll be on a podcast and then
I see what you were trying to do.
505
:Will you were trying
to stick in my heaven.
506
:Reward you?
507
:Yeah.
508
:Wow.
509
:I can't believe you did that.
510
:But that idea, right.
511
:When you fast, it doesn't say, if,
it doesn't say if you're a varsity
512
:Christian and those people fast is,
the expectation is too fast, fast to
513
:lose weight, right fast for health.
514
:That's, that's what he's talking about.
515
:That's, that's not what Jesus has.
516
:Jesus doesn't have the Daniel plan
in mind here, or Ezekiel bread or
517
:any of the other health hacks that
people came up with from the Bible.
518
:Fasting is always
related to prayer, right?
519
:Yes.
520
:And like that's what I think the
connection here is, is that fasting.
521
:Is a way for you to focus on prayer.
522
:It gives your body a natural way to remind
you to pray, and it also reminds you that
523
:you need God more than you need food.
524
:That's kind the idea behind fasting.
525
:And so as far as how you should
fast or when you should fast, right?
526
:I had one professor, he said that
if you didn't pray when you fasted,
527
:all you did was just get hungry.
528
:You didn't fast.
529
:And so I think connecting
fasting to prayer is always.
530
:Really important.
531
:Yeah.
532
:And if you want a resource on
that, I would recommend the
533
:chapter in Donald Whitney's book,
spiritual Disciplines on Fasting.
534
:I think that's a particularly helpful
place to go to learn more about that.
535
:And I would also recommend and commend
to you the other chapters in that
536
:book, specifically on prayer as well.
537
:That works well in conjunction
as to Lewis's point.
538
:Alright.
539
:We're edging towards 30 minutes, which
is beyond what we were told to do.
540
:So let's wrap this up with
one of your favorite passages.
541
:How can you concisely wrap up into
a few sentences, these amazing final
542
:verses of chapter six of Matthew?
543
:Yeah, I love these two
paragraphs right here.
544
:I think the most.
545
:Important thing is that we're
therefore right there at verse 25,
546
:the very beginning of verse 25.
547
:You see the therefore, and
the connecting words in the
548
:Bible are so important, right?
549
:Mm-hmm.
550
:Words like sense or because, or therefore,
or as a result or anything like that.
551
:And so I think the point here of 19 to
24 is about your focus, your treasure.
552
:And I think what Jesus is saying
is that your treasure is your
553
:heart a magnet for your heart.
554
:Mm-hmm.
555
:Your treasure will attract your heart.
556
:But.
557
:Also your treasure becomes your master.
558
:That's why he adds that in verse
24 there, when he talks about
559
:you can't serve two masters.
560
:So he's really pointing out that
you're mastered by your treasure.
561
:You serve your treasure, your
heart is always going to be
562
:drawn towards your treasure.
563
:And your treasure is
determined by your focus.
564
:That's what the I is all about.
565
:The I is about what you focus.
566
:And so what he's saying is he's
connecting all these concepts.
567
:Treasure, focus, master.
568
:He's saying they're all the same, and
that's where your heart's gonna go.
569
:Therefore, don't be anxious because your
anxiety is also determined by your focus.
570
:Because think about the commands he gives.
571
:He says, look at the birds.
572
:He says, consider the lily.
573
:Those are attention verbs.
574
:Look at this.
575
:Think about this.
576
:And he tells you, take your attention
off your anxieties and put your attention
577
:onto the Lord and that will cause you
to seek verse 33, first, the Kingdom
578
:of God, which then you will treasure
the Lord and he'll be your master,
579
:and that's where your heart will go.
580
:So that's kind of the theme that
runs through these two paragraphs.
581
:Well, like it or not, we'll
be back again tomorrow.
582
:But let me commend to you
what Lewis is saying, right?
583
:If today, and hopefully it's the morning
if you are facing anxiety, do his
584
:Verse 33 says, seek first the kingdom
of God and his righteousness and.
585
:That way.
586
:You don't have to be anxious
about what tomorrow brings.
587
:What a good, good thing that is.
588
:What a blessing that is from
God in the Christian life.
589
:Alright, we will see you tomorrow.
590
:Let me pray for us as we close, and we
are excited for a couple more days with
591
:you here on the Daily Bible Pro Podcast.
592
:Lord, thank you.
593
:Thank you for your word.
594
:Thank you.
595
:That your word has so much truth
in it that it is truth, that we can
596
:turn to it, that we can hope in it.
597
:And ultimately that's not hope or trust
in those words, but it's trust in you.
598
:It's a heart that is eager
to be obedient to you.
599
:And we're thankful for your word.
600
:We're thankful for our church, and we're
thankful for today's daily Bible reading.
