Lawmakers are returning to Washington on Monday under pressure to avert a government shutdown as both parties prepare for an election-season spending fight. After a full month away from the nation's capital, lawmakers have just 21 days to come to an agreement to keep the government open before the Sept. 30 funding deadline.

More than 3,000 family members of 9/11 victims have written a letter to Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, urging them not to sign any Middle East peace deal with Saudi Arabia. The family members say there is evidence showing Saudi Arabia was involved in the 9/11 terror attacks.

Schools across a swath of central Kentucky have canceled classes on Monday and residents have been urged to remain on high alert as the deep-woods search for a man suspected of opening fire along I-75 enters its 3rd day. Joseph Couch, 32, has evaded capture since Saturday afternoon when authorities say he struck 12 cars, wounding 5 people.
