Speaker:

Welcome to the Crochet

Business School Podcast.

2

:

I'm your host, Kelly Thomas, and I'm

going to help you to make your crochet

3

:

business dreams a reality stitch

by stitch without you being chained

4

:

to your hook and being able to live

that lifestyle you've been dreaming

5

:

of using the power of your crochet.

6

:

Let's talk about.

7

:

Your crochet business name.

8

:

How do you decide.

9

:

What's call yourself.

10

:

How'd you know, there's not another

business out there with the same name.

11

:

You will name?

12

:

Your business name is the first thing.

13

:

That gets people's notice.

14

:

It's all of your branding.

15

:

It's.

16

:

No, your social media tag.

17

:

It's your se shop name is everywhere.

18

:

So it's the first thing

that's going to get seen.

19

:

And it's the first impression.

20

:

Before, half of you.

21

:

Besides your logo.

22

:

Or any pictures they see.

23

:

And the name can have a powerful effect.

24

:

It can make you sound very professional.

25

:

It can make you sound kind of fun.

26

:

Funky.

27

:

It can also make you sound very cheesy.

28

:

My business has had several

names over the years.

29

:

Uh, my first one was the

worst choice possible.

30

:

Now I am terrible.

31

:

Or coming up with names.

32

:

No one might randomly come to me.

33

:

Oh, I run them time, but when I

actually need to sit down and decide

34

:

one, I can never think of something.

35

:

And when I first started my

crochet business back when I

36

:

didn't have a clue about a thing.

37

:

I cold.

38

:

My business, Kells crafts.

39

:

Cross with a K.

40

:

It was a terrible choice.

41

:

Because spelling cross with a K.

42

:

It's kind of cheesy.

43

:

It's not most professional looking.

44

:

And it had.

45

:

You know, Back room mom,

trying to make a bigger.

46

:

Bit of extra cash written all over it.

47

:

It wasn't the best at all.

48

:

And as I began to learn more

about, you know, the world

49

:

of business and how it works.

50

:

I realized how terrible it was.

51

:

My next business name was far better.

52

:

And that was caught in an hour.

53

:

How to think for aloe at the time.

54

:

And my favorite fiber and

still is my favorite fiber.

55

:

It was cotton.

56

:

So cotton and Ella came about.

57

:

Now that has no connection

with crochet really at all.

58

:

But I was selling what I made.

59

:

And so that's fine.

60

:

No, you don't need the word

crochet in your business name.

61

:

If you're selling what you make.

62

:

If you were just saying

patterns or courses.

63

:

Um, oh, you have a blog then.

64

:

Having crochet in the name.

65

:

Is.

66

:

It's more of a thing.

67

:

But if you just link what you

make, you don't need it in there.

68

:

And so caught Anello it

sounded, it sounds quite modern.

69

:

And fresh.

70

:

Uh, professionally, it was far better.

71

:

But you certainly didn't.

72

:

Couldn't find me if you're

specific looking for crochet.

73

:

The name didn't give it away.

74

:

But I had no issues with that.

75

:

Um, because I was only

saying what I made it.

76

:

Wasn't an issue at all.

77

:

When I switched to.

78

:

Writing crochet patterns.

79

:

Instead of reusing Cottonelle.

80

:

Which, when it came to

patterns, it didn't fit.

81

:

My original name was the

cool crochet society.

82

:

The idea was that I was

creating a community.

83

:

A little crochet customer.

84

:

So having crochet in the

title was more important.

85

:

And.

86

:

It was supposed to be modern designs.

87

:

How long is that somebody

else choose that name for me?

88

:

And I regressed it for a long time.

89

:

I quit.

90

:

I felt quite embarrassed

by that name after a while.

91

:

I didn't like using it.

92

:

And so when it was time for a rebrand,

I wanted something that was more me.

93

:

So maybe that was a bit fun, a bit quirky.

94

:

And.

95

:

You know, just.

96

:

More me and eventually.

97

:

I came up with Ragazzi frog.

98

:

And we'll play on a crochet joke that you

always have to frog and frog a lopsided.

99

:

Still do.

100

:

And that became.

101

:

My new name and I love it.

102

:

It's more me.

103

:

It's fun as quirky.

104

:

Which is me.

105

:

And I have every intention of

sticking them with that name until.

106

:

Forevermore.

107

:

Because I finally feel that

I have a name that fits me.

108

:

It fits my business.

109

:

It fits what I want to do in the future.

110

:

And it's just far more appropriate.

111

:

But I've gone through

all those iterations.

112

:

Of my business to get here.

113

:

To get to a point.

114

:

But I feel the name that I have face.

115

:

My business, uh, my goals.

116

:

I'm also thinking of the name.

117

:

You have to carry it

for potentially years.

118

:

You know, rebranding.

119

:

Uh, crochet business is no small feat.

120

:

I mean, I changed the frog frog.

121

:

Oh, gosh.

122

:

It must be nine, 10 months ago now.

123

:

And I still haven't completely

finished the rebrand because

124

:

there's so many bits and pieces

that I've got to go and sort out.

125

:

Now I've done my YouTube channel.

126

:

After my website.

127

:

I've done most of my past ones.

128

:

I haven't finished them all yet.

129

:

I still have cool crushes,

slicey, Brenda persons.

130

:

Because it takes quite a bit of

time to change some of the stuff,

131

:

especially when it comes to logos

and watermarks on your photos.

132

:

Because you've got to go and

change and edit all those photos.

133

:

It's put into the persons.

134

:

So it's still a co precedence outstanding

that still need switching over.

135

:

You know, it doesn't take

five minutes to rebrand it.

136

:

Especially when, once you've

been going for awhile.

137

:

It can take a long time to sort out.

138

:

So switching names.

139

:

Is not something that

you should do lightly.

140

:

It's far better.

141

:

To get a name that you love to

begin with and stick with it.

142

:

So when you're choosing.

143

:

Your crochet business name.

144

:

Susan it for awhile.

145

:

No.

146

:

Thank you.

147

:

Have a name that you like.

148

:

That sounds good to you and

then sits in it for a while.

149

:

Keep it going through your head.

150

:

Say it loud.

151

:

Find a friend who you can sit

down with and say to them and ask

152

:

them what they think of it, what

their impressions of that name.

153

:

But just keep running it

round in your head to decide.

154

:

Does it fit you?

155

:

Does it fit your.

156

:

Crochet business.

157

:

Ideas.

158

:

Does it fit your niche?

159

:

Does it feel.

160

:

Yours.

161

:

Because it feels a bit off.

162

:

It's going to feel more rough later.

163

:

So you.

164

:

I would get used to this name.

165

:

And then run it around your head a

few times say is other people say out

166

:

loud, And see how you feel about it.

167

:

Because you got to live with it.

168

:

It's going to be there for a long time.

169

:

And if it doesn't feel

quite right to begin with.

170

:

Let's go and start

feeling even worse later.

171

:

Sometimes you hit some.

172

:

The idea for a name and

it just feels perfect.

173

:

That's the feeling you need

to go for a just is right.

174

:

No froggy frog.

175

:

I felt right for me from the beginning.

176

:

And I wish I come up with a years ago.

177

:

But.

178

:

It suits, it suits me,

it suits my business.

179

:

It's just the right name.

180

:

Don't be afraid to run

things over in your head.

181

:

Half of the little rummage around

the internet and see what other

182

:

crochet businesses calling themselves.

183

:

Because there's so many

different ways that you can go.

184

:

When deciding a name.

185

:

You can have your own name in it.

186

:

You could take your favorite animal

and include that in the name.

187

:

There was so many varieties and

different ways of naming things.

188

:

There's no convention here.

189

:

It's whatever you want it to be.

190

:

You don't have to have crochet the title.

191

:

I mean the full name for my

business is frosty frog, crochet.

192

:

That don't use that.

193

:

Unless I specifically wants

to be found for crochet.

194

:

So you'll find it on my

YouTube videos and title.

195

:

But when I'm just saying my business name.

196

:

frog.

197

:

Mostly because I'm already talking

to the audience who knows what I do.

198

:

So I don't need other crochet on the end.

199

:

So it's up to you, whether you

had crochet and the name or not.

200

:

You can have something fun.

201

:

You can have something more.

202

:

No serious and professional.

203

:

You can ask me quirky.

204

:

You can just use your own name.

205

:

There is no convention to

naming a crochet business.

206

:

It's whatever you want to call it.

207

:

Which gives you the problem of once

you have the name that you want.

208

:

How would, you know, There's

no one else with that name.

209

:

Well, you start searching.

210

:

The first thing I would do.

211

:

Is.

212

:

Go to a.

213

:

Um, Domain name provider.

214

:

So a domain name is.

215

:

A website address.

216

:

So the domain name for my businesses.

217

:

I've got froggy, frogs.com.

218

:

That's the domain name.

219

:

And I've got crochet business, school.com.

220

:

Just the domain name.

221

:

Go to.

222

:

Uh, domain name provider, like go daddy.

223

:

Um, oh, there's so many outlets.

224

:

A quick Google search will

come up with them and it will,

225

:

you can go into the ask it.

226

:

If that name is available.

227

:

So he clicked buy a domain name.

228

:

And it will ask you to search.

229

:

For one that's available.

230

:

Type in the name.

231

:

Make sure you search for the.com.

232

:

That one's important.

233

:

And see if your name is available.

234

:

If it comes up as available.

235

:

Great.

236

:

Free and clear.

237

:

If it's not available, it

means somebody already got it.

238

:

That's why we're using the domain names.

239

:

Because.

240

:

Well, two reasons.

241

:

One in the future, you

may want to website.

242

:

But secondly, in the short term, You

should be building a newsletter list.

243

:

And.

244

:

Recently.

245

:

There's been new laws passed

anti-spam laws, which means

246

:

that anyone who sends out.

247

:

Uh, newsletters now.

248

:

Nice to have a proper domain name.

249

:

You have to use that for your newsletters.

250

:

So you need this.

251

:

So basically if the website

name hasn't been taken already,

252

:

It's your Frank let's take it.

253

:

You may find others on

social media with that name.

254

:

But that's okay.

255

:

Because.

256

:

They clearly don't have the website

for it, and they clearly don't have

257

:

the domain name for the newsletter.

258

:

Which means they were only selling.

259

:

Sort of locally.

260

:

So they don't really own it.

261

:

They just own a social media page.

262

:

And that does not give them

the rights to the name.

263

:

If you're all going to be selling on Etsy.

264

:

Uh, or Ravelry.

265

:

Then you might wanna check that out.

266

:

You don't need a domain

name to sell on them.

267

:

But you do for the newsletter list.

268

:

But if you do want the exact

same name on SEO rivalry.

269

:

Then go and search.

270

:

Go search that sites to see if

a shop with that name pops up.

271

:

I mean, there are ways around that.

272

:

You could put your

country name on the end.

273

:

You know, U S U K.

274

:

Um, Oh, or whatever you want.

275

:

But you might want to rethink it.

276

:

I would say the domain name is the more

important things to begin with because

277

:

you want that name for your newsletter.

278

:

So you want to reserve it?

279

:

You want to buy it?

280

:

And it's not expensive

to buy a domain name.

281

:

You can buy one for 15

pounds a year and that's.

282

:

It's around about $22.

283

:

And also the entire year.

284

:

You don't have to have a website,

you have the domain name, you can

285

:

just use it for your newsletter list.

286

:

Oh, you can just reserve

it for the future.

287

:

But.

288

:

I wouldn't worry about any.

289

:

Business with the same name,

with just a social media profile.

290

:

Because.

291

:

It's the domain name that matters.

292

:

So, if you can have that domain name

and it's available and you want the.com.

293

:

Okay, you can, those in.

294

:

Dot co.uk.

295

:

Get dot code and all these other

endings, but.com is seen as.

296

:

Uh, the more authentic.

297

:

Um, More professional.

298

:

Domain ending.

299

:

So that's the one you want.

300

:

Um, once you've got that.

301

:

You're free to go.

302

:

That's your business name?

303

:

So then you can go ahead and

set up your social media.

304

:

Set up your newsletter list.

305

:

You can set up your Etsy shop.

306

:

You're on jewelry shop.

307

:

Because that's what website, if you want.

308

:

Once you have your name and you know, the

domain name is there available for you?

309

:

All's well and good.

310

:

Yeah.

311

:

Boats.

312

:

Make sure you think

about that domain name?

313

:

Yup.

314

:

Make sure you think

about your business name?

315

:

Before.

316

:

You go ahead and do all this.

317

:

It's a name you have to

live with for a long time.

318

:

It's the name you have

to be comfortable with.

319

:

It's the name that.

320

:

You need some, make sure it fits.

321

:

Because the wrong day, you

can get the wrong impression.

322

:

The wrong name can make you feel a bit

icky about your business is certainly

323

:

did mine when I had the wrong one.

324

:

And.

325

:

You will find it far easier

to go ahead and market your.

326

:

Crochet that you mean it.

327

:

If you're comfortable with

the name that you're using.

328

:

So just run it around

your head for the oil.

329

:

Make sure you're comfortable with it.

330

:

And then what's your show.

331

:

That's the right one for you.

332

:

Go ahead and do those

searches, the domain name.

333

:

Uh, the Etsy stores roll restores.

334

:

To make sure it's still available for you.

335

:

And then you're good.

336

:

But make sure you buy that domain name.

337

:

'cause that's the only way.

338

:

You can reserve it for yourself

for the future and any website,

339

:

a newsletter list that you built.
