Speaker:

Welcome friends to the Creative Spiritual

Journey podcast, where GUI and I walk

2

:

with you for just a moment and share

the things of our heart, the joys and

3

:

lessons we're discovering along the way

of this marvelous journey and the small

4

:

steps we can take to follow the savior.

5

:

I am Judy Cooley, your

host for this episode.

6

:

Looking on the bright side.

7

:

When I just said that, did the tune

always look on the bright side of life?

8

:

Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do.

9

:

Come to mind.

10

:

I'm recording this episode two days

before GI and I with our fabulous

11

:

man, our husbands Lee, for a 10 day

backpacking trip down Grand Gulch, Utah.

12

:

That means these next two episodes

will be released while we are

13

:

wandering somewhere in the wilderness.

14

:

There's a lot of planning that

goes on before setting out

15

:

on an adventure like this.

16

:

Where

17

:

that you think you might need,

you carry in your backpack.

18

:

The food is the trickiest.

19

:

I usually don't know what I'm

fixing for dinner any given day,

20

:

let alone plan and think out.

21

:

Light weight, calorie dense food for 10.

22

:

Ah.

23

:

And then there's also the weather.

24

:

What to wear to be prepared

for extreme hot or cold and

25

:

still keep your pack light.

26

:

There is a science, my friend

behind packing the backpack.

27

:

Every ounce counts and all I want is

my fluffy pillow, my comfy chair, and

28

:

fresh fruit, which always way too much.

29

:

So I have to settle for an

inflatable pillow, a floor

30

:

mat, and freeze dried food.

31

:

Uh, it will be a wonderful adventure

though, and I'm looking forward to the

32

:

time and nature with the people I love.

33

:

Interestingly, while creating this

episode, I came across a Darren Podcast

34

:

episode that piqued my interest.

35

:

The episode was titled The Daily

Habit That Will Extend Your Life.

36

:

you know how I love

talking about Daily Habits?

37

:

Do you wanna know what this is?

38

:

I'll get to that in a minute.

39

:

Here's a hint, it's not backpacking.

40

:

At the same time, I was asked

to teach a meditation class

41

:

at a women's state conference.

42

:

The theme, A Perfect Brightness of

Hope, which is one of my favorites,

43

:

found in the Book of Mormon.

44

:

You must press forward with a

steadfastness in Christ, having

45

:

a perfect brightness of hope and

a love of God and of all men.

46

:

to me.

47

:

This is the daily habit that

can improve your quality of

48

:

life, faith pressing forward.

49

:

A perfect brightness of hope and

a love of God and each other.

50

:

So do you wanna know the secret

elixir of life according to some

51

:

brainiacs, you know, they say people.

52

:

First, you need to know that I don't

believe in quick fixes or one size

53

:

fit all formulas, but I do believe in

eternal principles and spiritual patterns

54

:

that are just truths in God's plan.

55

:

It's so simple, practical,

and it's a proven technique to

56

:

transform your life for the better.

57

:

Do you really, really wanna know?

58

:

Are you yelling?

59

:

Yes.

60

:

Tell me, Judy, are you ready for it?

61

:

Brace yourself because.

62

:

I'm about to shine the bright

rays of enlightenment upon you.

63

:

The key to living a longer,

more fulfilling life lies in the

64

:

power of your sunny disposition.

65

:

Or, as the Lord said, lift up

your hearts and be of good cheer.

66

:

I believe it is a spiritual gift to

be able to look on the bright side.

67

:

And this is also

contagious, don't you think?

68

:

Being happy and joyful is contagious,

and you're not only adding years to your

69

:

life, but you will also help hold up

your light to your fellow travelers like

70

:

the savior said to hold up your light.

71

:

Now I know what you're thinking.

72

:

Come on Judy.

73

:

That sounds a little too Pollyanna-ish.

74

:

And more like Yogi Mumbo jumbo

optimism can extend your life.

75

:

Well, so can eating cod liver oil.

76

:

Have you ever tasted cod liver oil?

77

:

But It is the brainiac at the Boston

University and Harvard Studies have

78

:

proven that being more optimistic

and hopeful for the future can

79

:

help people live up to 15% longer.

80

:

That is like adding a decade or more

to your life sounds like science is

81

:

catching up to what ancient scriptures

have been telling us all along.

82

:

Looking to Christ and having a

perfect brightness of hope and loving

83

:

others, not only increases happiness

but our life here on this earth.

84

:

It's the good news.

85

:

So.

86

:

How do you officially turn

your frown upside down and

87

:

become the ultimate optimist?

88

:

The great news is that

optimism can be learned.

89

:

Yes, even at our age,

optimism can be learned.

90

:

One study found that it only

takes five minutes a day.

91

:

I think we can find that spending

just five minutes per day focused.

92

:

Imagining on becoming your best possible

self in your life, your personal

93

:

relationships, in your work, in your

day-to-day choices and things like

94

:

meditating on positive affirmation

and choosing joy for the day can

95

:

boost your optimism significantly.

96

:

And hey, lucky you, that's exactly

what GI and I are hoping you discover

97

:

each morning in the scriptures.

98

:

Prayer and riding along with

the meditations we share.

99

:

But you showing up each morning to ponder,

to mindfully breathe, to ponder and ask

100

:

to seek inspiration, to visualize your

best possible self in one or several

101

:

areas in your life will improve your life.

102

:

And it also creates a space where

you're becoming more like the savior.

103

:

But that's not all.

104

:

There's another easy to-do, bad

mood buster at your disposal.

105

:

You're ready.

106

:

Are you ready for some

more additional good news?

107

:

And this is one of my favorite things.

108

:

A 30 minute walk outside, get outdoors.

109

:

Get outta your head.

110

:

That's right.

111

:

A simple walk outdoors can annihilate

your negative thoughts and lift your mood.

112

:

Psychologist.

113

:

Call this the antidote to rumination.

114

:

Rumination is the act of.

115

:

Overanalyzing everything in your life.

116

:

Have you seen those shirts that say,

give me a moment, let me overthink it.

117

:

Something like that.

118

:

That's me, which can lead to a vicious

cycle of negativity, walking and being.

119

:

In the great Outdoor disrupts

this chaotic chatter feedback

120

:

loop that's swirling in your head.

121

:

It elevates your mood and helps you focus

on what's good and right about your life.

122

:

But in order to boost and increase the

power of getting outside and moving

123

:

is to make it a meditation walk,

listening to the sounds of nature,

124

:

having a conversation with the Lord

by leaving your phone at home if

125

:

possible, and learning to hear him.

126

:

And number three.

127

:

Is to make a conscious effort

to look on the bright side.

128

:

Whenever you find yourself in a

challenging situation, or feeling

129

:

down, make a deliberate choice

to focus on the positive aspects.

130

:

Just ask yourself, what

is great about this?

131

:

Have you ever tried that?

132

:

What is great about this?

133

:

And if nothing is great, then you can

ask yourself, how can I make this great?

134

:

And if there's still nothing you

can do 'cause it's out of your

135

:

control, then ask, how can I be

great in how I respond to this?

136

:

Because our response is always our choice.

137

:

This will take practice one way of

doing this for me, I have discovered

138

:

in journaling there is a healing

power in asking yourself those

139

:

questions and writing things out.

140

:

Interesting.

141

:

I've learned in an emotional resilient

class lately that one of the wrong

142

:

things to say to someone going through

a rough time is, Hey, look on the bright

143

:

side, here's some cookies I made you.

144

:

It's not the best way to validate

what they are feeling and surely not

145

:

showing empathy for what dealing with.

146

:

So maybe instead ask what is

helping you get through this?

147

:

And just listen.

148

:

There's great.

149

:

Power in listening, whether it's

listening to a friend in a rough

150

:

time, or listening while in meditation

or listening in prayer, listen.

151

:

The reality is when we are in

a really dark space, the sunny

152

:

disposition feels so far out of reach.

153

:

It might as well be on the moon,

This is where the only person who

154

:

can possibly understand soothe.

155

:

And redeem us is the savior.

156

:

Focusing on him and turning

to him can bring the light

157

:

of joy back into our hearts.

158

:

See, it's simple steps.

159

:

Not always easy admit, but they are

small and simple steps that can lead

160

:

to great things and we can do it.

161

:

Understanding these truths in our head

and in our hearts, we can take the

162

:

next step armed with the knowledge.

163

:

To transform our life for the

better and walk in the light.

164

:

It's time to step up and take action

and own 100% of our choices and

165

:

step into a perfect brightness,

A perfect brightness of hope.

166

:

The future is yours.

167

:

Okay, A quick review to creating a

sunny mindset and a brightness of hope

168

:

consists of three daily simple steps.

169

:

One.

170

:

Showing up each morning and some kind

of visualization, like meditative

171

:

prayer, a practice that helps set your

face towards the light, where you can

172

:

visualize being cheery and bright.

173

:

Why the morning?

174

:

Because it's the beginning of a new day.

175

:

And so each morning you'll ignite your

mind and calibrate your eyes for the day.

176

:

Focusing on Christ,

focusing on what's good.

177

:

Visualize your best self.

178

:

In your life becoming an open vessel

to receive his light and love into your

179

:

heart and put a shine on your face,

180

:

This is also a great time to

be feasting in the word of God.

181

:

Have you ever noticed how

optimistic Jesus Christ is?

182

:

He says, yeah.

183

:

Here we go, John 16.

184

:

In the world you shall have

tribulation but be of good cheer.

185

:

I have overcome the world in

the doctrine covenants be of

186

:

good cheer little children.

187

:

For I am in the midst and

I have not forsaken you.

188

:

Be of good cheer and do not

fear for I the Lord and with

189

:

you in Matthew be of good cheer.

190

:

It is I be not afraid and

it acts be of good cheer.

191

:

Paul.

192

:

Be in good cheer Judy.

193

:

It is my new motto.

194

:

This will take practice.

195

:

This will also train your mind

to expect the best and set

196

:

your path walking in his light.

197

:

Remember last episode I talked about

the natural man's negative bias and how.

198

:

When we remember the good we did

in the day, and we give thanks for

199

:

the blessings that we received.

200

:

This also increases the light

in our hearts and minds and

201

:

sit our feet on the sunny side.

202

:

Okay, number two, get out and move.

203

:

Go for a 30 minute walk outside

every day, rain or shine.

204

:

This will not only improve your

mood, but also help you achieve

205

:

that recommended, 150 minutes.

206

:

Or a thousand steps, whatever it

is to help you, to reach that

207

:

longer life and fewer health issues.

208

:

See if you can do it.

209

:

Unplugged, my friend, from your phone.

210

:

I believe you can do it.

211

:

And number three, Ask yourself

what is great about this?

212

:

If nothing is great, then ask,

how can I make this great?

213

:

If there's nothing you can do, then ask,

how can I be great in my response to this?

214

:

You have a super power of agency.

215

:

love is a choice.

216

:

Hope is a choice, and joy is a choice.

217

:

Are you ready to rise up and shine

your bright light of hope and

218

:

optimism to the world around you?

219

:

Now?

220

:

I hope so, because the people around

you are looking to you as their beacon.

221

:

Have you ever been in a deep dark

cave and they turn off all the lights?

222

:

It can be pretty

terrifying in the darkness.

223

:

It's so thick, you can feel it,

and then a small little light is

224

:

turned on and it's amazing how much

comfort just a small light can bring.

225

:

Think about if we all

shined our brightest,

226

:

It would have the power to chase

away all darkness from our hearts.

227

:

It's time for us to shine friends.

228

:

Always look on the bright side of life.

229

:

Oh my heavens.

230

:

I, I just googled the lyrics to that song

and realized it comes from Monty Python

231

:

and is sung by man hanging on a cross.

232

:

So siles, but jokes on them.

233

:

Christ said that he endured the

cross through the joy set before him.

234

:

So let me end with lyrics maybe

a little more appropriate.

235

:

Jesus wants me for a sun beam

to shine for him each day.

236

:

Oh, I can't believe I'm singing.

237

:

You have a divine light to shine.

238

:

So shine, shine, shine, shine.

239

:

And I'll see you on the trail.
