Speaker:

Microphone (HyperX SoloCast):

You're listening to episode

2

:

40 of burning brightly.

3

:

Find it the perfect business coach.

4

:

This is burning brightly, a podcast

for Christian moms who are feeling

5

:

called to build a business and

share their light with the world.

6

:

I'm Bonnie Wiscombe, a life

coach, mom, and entrepreneur.

7

:

And I'm honored to be your guide as you

face this business building adventure full

8

:

of highs, lows, and everything in between.

9

:

This is where we help each

other find the courage to shine.

10

:

Microphone (HyperX SoloCast):

Okay friends.

11

:

Uh, welcome back to another episode.

12

:

I am excited about this one because

I'm going to tell you how to find the

13

:

perfect business coach and know, this is

not just a point to tell you to hire me,

14

:

although I will talk to you a little bit

about why I'm a good business coach, but,

15

:

there is a different purpose to this.

16

:

Episode, and you will find

that out towards the end.

17

:

But let's talk for a second about

what it's like to start something new.

18

:

We start something new, a new

hobby business family, even.

19

:

And we want to learn new things about it.

20

:

Right?

21

:

We're curious.

22

:

We want to learn from the experts.

23

:

Who's been really good at this before.

24

:

How do I find the secrets and tap into

the expertise that's out there to become

25

:

the best parent, the best business

owner, the best gardener, whatever

26

:

it may be that you're interested in.

27

:

So we will go find the personal

trainer who has the perfect six pack.

28

:

And we'll ask her how she

got the abs like that.

29

:

We'll ask that master

gardener about his fertilizer.

30

:

What does he put in it?

31

:

And when it comes to business, we

will go find a multi-million dollar

32

:

business owner and we'll ask her

how she does marketing and how she

33

:

does her content creation strategy.

34

:

But today, I want to change your

perspective a little bit specifically

35

:

about business and how to find that

perfect expert or that perfect guide

36

:

to get you to your idea of success.

37

:

Because remember, we've talked about

this before, your idea of success is

38

:

not going to be someone else's idea,

and we have to be, get clear very early

39

:

on about what our idea of success looks

like and what it does not look like.

40

:

Let's talk for just a second about who

is not a great expert on your business.

41

:

It's not going to be your husband.

42

:

Even if he's in your business with

you, if it is your business, he's

43

:

not going to be the expert on it.

44

:

Your sister-in-law has probably not an

expert on your business, your neighbor.

45

:

Or even the successful plumber or

electrician in your neighborhood.

46

:

So just because they're a successful

business owner, it doesn't make

47

:

them the expert in your business.

48

:

As we've probably been able

to see everyone has advice

49

:

for how we should do things.

50

:

But we need to be very, very cautious

about who we talk to about our business.

51

:

Especially about who we talk

to regarding our dreams.

52

:

Dreams and goals, especially

those big, hairy, audacious ones.

53

:

Need to be protected.

54

:

Many people can not dream.

55

:

Like we dreamers can.

56

:

And so they poop who are visions

sometimes, and there is nothing

57

:

more heartbreaking than having an

incredible dream and incredible

58

:

vision for your business.

59

:

Sharing it with someone you love and

them telling you is a terrible idea

60

:

or telling you that it's unrealistic.

61

:

Of course it's unrealistic.

62

:

It's a dream.

63

:

And dreams are powerful,

but we have to protect them.

64

:

And only share them with others

who are similarly inspired to us.

65

:

And take advice from even fewer people.

66

:

These dreams are very, very precious.

67

:

I like to think of them as

this big, beautiful, colorful.

68

:

Bubble.

69

:

And in that bubble is all of the things

that my dream is going to bring to pass.

70

:

The freedom, the money, the success,

the blessings for my family.

71

:

And it's very easy to pop those bubbles.

72

:

If somebody comes along

with their barbed words,

73

:

to take the analogy even further and

they'll come along and pop our bubble.

74

:

And it doesn't feel very good.

75

:

So be very cautious about that.

76

:

But guess who else?

77

:

Isn't an expert on your business?

78

:

I'm going to go ahead and say it.

79

:

The super successful millionaire

business owner who has built

80

:

exactly what you want to build.

81

:

Now why wouldn't this person

be an expert on your business?

82

:

They've built exactly what you

want in the same industry, the same

83

:

type of culture, content creator.

84

:

Why would they not be an

expert on your business?

85

:

Well, I see this happen all the time.

86

:

I did this myself for years.

87

:

I kept buying programs and courses and.

88

:

Trying to figure out the mysterious step.

89

:

I was missing to find that

monetary success that I needed

90

:

and wanted in my business.

91

:

I cannot tell you how many

times I thought this is it.

92

:

This is the thing that's

going to bring me success.

93

:

Or if I can just find that perfect

course or coach, then I'll be successful.

94

:

But there are two main problems with this.

95

:

The first.

96

:

Is that those super successful

coaches do not remember what

97

:

it's like to be a beginner.

98

:

Someone who owns a seven figure business

is solving much different problems

99

:

in their big successful business.

100

:

Then you are in your beginner business.

101

:

And of course we want to be like them.

102

:

There's nothing wrong with looking

at that and making it a goal

103

:

for yourself, but just remember.

104

:

That for the most part, it's very

hard for them to remember what

105

:

it was like to be a beginner.

106

:

The second problem with looking

at these experts is that.

107

:

The truth of the matter is only you

are the expert in your business.

108

:

So let's dive into number one first.

109

:

Learning about business from the experts.

110

:

It's easy to want to learn from the best.

111

:

If they have built what you want to build.

112

:

Of course, we want to

take their advice, right?

113

:

Well, we can.

114

:

But I suggest we only do this if we are

very close to their level of business.

115

:

So let's say I'm currently at

$750,000 in my business, and I want

116

:

to hit the million dollar mark.

117

:

Then I need to go find someone who has

just passed the million dollar mark.

118

:

If I have made no money in my business.

119

:

Then I want to go find someone

who has just started making

120

:

thousands in their business.

121

:

Why, why wouldn't we want to get

someone with even more expertise?

122

:

Because these people have been in

business for years and years, like I

123

:

said, they don't remember what made

them successful in the beginning,

124

:

nor do they know what tools are

available right now for beginners.

125

:

So finding someone who is just a

few steps ahead of you is crucial

126

:

to getting you to that point.

127

:

And then you can follow that coach.

128

:

If she continues to grow with you, or

you can find someone who's hit that next

129

:

milestone that you're trying to hit.

130

:

The other reason, and this is a big one.

131

:

Why these big experts are not great for

beginners is that their business models

132

:

do not allow for one-to-one coaching.

133

:

If they are making millions, they're

not doing it by offering affordable

134

:

one-on-one coaching to beginners.

135

:

They're making millions through

group coaching programs or courses

136

:

or memberships, which means you

will not get the handholding.

137

:

You need to set things up correctly.

138

:

And there is nothing more frustrating.

139

:

Then spending thousands of dollars

on a business program with us hugely

140

:

successful coach only to never get

to talk to him or her I've done it.

141

:

It seems so fun.

142

:

Oh, I get to learn from so-and-so

and yet you never talked to the

143

:

person because they are too busy

because they're busy making millions.

144

:

Now, here's the part where

I get to toot my own horn.

145

:

This is one of my strength.

146

:

I am a new coach.

147

:

I just certified last year.

148

:

Which means I am still able to

do one-on-one coaching, but.

149

:

I have the business skills that

I've developed over years and years,

150

:

because I have owned a business

of my own for over 10 years.

151

:

So the business skills that I've

developed as a blogger and an

152

:

e-commerce owner, I can then help

you use in your coaching business.

153

:

So even though I haven't yet made

six figures in my coaching business,

154

:

I can get clients up and running

in just a few months because I

155

:

have that business expertise.

156

:

So, this is why I am uniquely

positioned to help new coaches.

157

:

Okay.

158

:

So that's the first problem.

159

:

Everybody wants to learn from the best,

but those super successful coaches are

160

:

hard to get the help you need from them.

161

:

But number two, the part you probably

pushed back on a little bit, the idea

162

:

that you are the expert in your business.

163

:

This doesn't make a lot of

sense at first glance, right?

164

:

Because you don't know

much at the beginning.

165

:

And that's okay.

166

:

Everyone starts knowing nothing.

167

:

Isn't that a really powerful thought.

168

:

Even the super successful CEO's of apple.

169

:

And Airbnb and Netflix, they

started knowing nothing.

170

:

Likely many of them went to.

171

:

MBA school and learned from professors

before they got into the business world.

172

:

But we all start by knowing nothing.

173

:

And the metaphor I love in

building business is we are

174

:

actually learning aviation and

flying the plane at the same time.

175

:

And luckily for us, it's not actually

life threatening, like building a plane

176

:

in the air would be, but it is frustrating

and it can be confusing because we're

177

:

thinking, I don't know how to do this.

178

:

I've never done it before.

179

:

the fact of the matter is no one

is experiencing your business.

180

:

Like you are.

181

:

If you are the type of coach who

is offering a transformation to

182

:

your clients that you've already

experienced, then you're the only

183

:

one who knows what that's like.

184

:

And only you has been through the exact

mindset challenges you've been through

185

:

to teach your clients the same successes.

186

:

Only, you know, what your clients

need and how to help them.

187

:

Every time you help a person,

you are getting more ideas for

188

:

how to help future clients.

189

:

Every time you.

190

:

Offer advice, even if it's for free,

you are gaining more experience

191

:

in reaching out to those clients

and giving them what they need.

192

:

Then as your business grows only, you

know, what has worked and what hasn't.

193

:

Only, you know, your

strengths and your weaknesses.

194

:

And we've talked before about how crucial

it is that we build a business based on

195

:

our strengths and not our weaknesses.

196

:

But most importantly, only, you know,

what you love and what you don't love.

197

:

You are building your dream, not

someone else's don't let any expert

198

:

tell you to build it in a way that

does not resonate with you and how

199

:

you want to build your business.

200

:

So let's say for example, you took

tens of thousands of dollars on

201

:

savings to go pay an expert, to

teach you the one secret to success.

202

:

Tell me the one thing that made all the

difference for you and your business.

203

:

And they said.

204

:

Public speaking.

205

:

Public speaking has been the key

to growing my business to millions.

206

:

It has grown my audience.

207

:

It is the best thing I've ever done.

208

:

The only problem is you hate public

speaking and you never want to do it.

209

:

Well, then you've just wasted tens of

thousands of dollars because this guy

210

:

has told you the secret to his business.

211

:

And it turns out you do not

want it to be the secret to your

212

:

business because you don't want

that to be a part of your business.

213

:

Now I happen to love public speaking.

214

:

That was just an example, but

you are the one that gets to

215

:

decide what business to build.

216

:

Don't offload the responsibility of

making these choices to someone else.

217

:

We do that because

these choices are scary.

218

:

I get it.

219

:

But when we do that, we will regret it

because no one else knows our business.

220

:

Like we do.

221

:

Now, obviously as our business

stretches and rows us, we will

222

:

have to change as things go.

223

:

This isn't permission to never do

anything you don't like in your business.

224

:

But we do not need to do things

that aren't a strength to

225

:

us or that we flat out hate.

226

:

You can delegate those things.

227

:

That's allowed.

228

:

No one wants to wake up to a

monetarily successful business.

229

:

That is a nightmare to run.

230

:

Don't build something

that you're going to.

231

:

Look back at and hate.

232

:

Okay.

233

:

So as the expert in our

business, we make the decisions.

234

:

We have to stop asking

everyone else for advice.

235

:

You guys, this is so hard to do.

236

:

At the beginning, every time I wanted to

make a decision, I had asked 14 friends

237

:

first, what they thought about it.

238

:

After a while I learned to not ask my

friends that weren't building businesses,

239

:

but then I would ask my business, building

friends, all my entrepreneurial friends.

240

:

What do you think about this?

241

:

What do you think about this?

242

:

And nine times out of 10,

I would get split votes.

243

:

Half of my friends would say,

oh, this has worked for me.

244

:

The other half would say,

oh, this has worked for me.

245

:

And in the end it didn't do

me any good to ask her advice.

246

:

I had to just dive into

that scientific process.

247

:

So we make a decision.

248

:

We make a hypothesis about how we think

it's going to turn out and then we

249

:

put it on the market and we test it.

250

:

Asking.

251

:

For advice is a cheap

and safe alternative.

252

:

To testing it in the market.

253

:

Then we look at the results.

254

:

We tweak it and test it again.

255

:

Now, obviously that safest easiest

thing to do is just to ask advice for

256

:

years and never actually do the thing.

257

:

Well, what do you think about this?

258

:

Well, maybe I'll try this and then we

build our program a little bit and then

259

:

we talk some more with our friends.

260

:

I see this all the time.

261

:

I've done it myself all the time.

262

:

Stop doing all this perpetual motion

in your business and asking all

263

:

the advice and just take action.

264

:

The action is hard.

265

:

It is scary.

266

:

And it will result in failure

more times than success.

267

:

That is a fact.

268

:

It will take longer to

see success than you want.

269

:

If you want to, in six

months, it will take 12.

270

:

If you want to.

271

:

In two years, it will take five.

272

:

That is how business works.

273

:

It will be frustrating and sometimes

embarrassing when things don't

274

:

work out the way you anticipated.

275

:

But every failure is incredibly

powerful because every failure teaches

276

:

us at least one important lesson.

277

:

It teaches us what does

not work for our business.

278

:

And every time you eliminate

something that doesn't work, you

279

:

get that much closer to what does.

280

:

So stop asking for advice.

281

:

Nobody else knows what's going

to work in your business.

282

:

Stop asking those successful people.

283

:

Stop asking the neighbor.

284

:

And just test what you want

to try and see how it goes.

285

:

No expert on the planet can predict what

is going to happen in your business.

286

:

And that is one of those

exciting things about business.

287

:

It is new.

288

:

It is brand new.

289

:

Every time you do something

in your business is brand new.

290

:

Something that nobody has ever

done in your shoes before.

291

:

Also means it's scary.

292

:

So we don't have to be

supremely confident, but we

293

:

do have to be courageous.

294

:

Just get out there and test

it and see what happens.

295

:

This is actually where business

really closely resembles parenting.

296

:

If you're a parent.

297

:

Ask yourself, what it felt like to

hold a new baby for the first time.

298

:

Terrifying.

299

:

We wanted to ask all the advice.

300

:

Listen to all the podcasts,

read all the books.

301

:

You just wanted your mom probably

to move in and do it all for

302

:

you because it was so scary.

303

:

But after all the advice has been given.

304

:

Then we just go home with our kids

by ourselves and we do our best.

305

:

We try a tactic, we try a

technique and it doesn't work.

306

:

We pivot and we try again and

then you have another kid and

307

:

you have to learn all over again

because every kid is so different.

308

:

That is business.

309

:

The market changes.

310

:

You're going to have to

try something new, right?

311

:

Let's you will find success in your

business and then something will

312

:

change and you'll have to tweak it up.

313

:

That's what makes it so exciting.

314

:

So don't get freaked

out about the changes.

315

:

Don't get freaked out about

the fact that you don't know

316

:

what's going to succeed yet.

317

:

You don't have to that's

part of the journey.

318

:

One final resource I haven't

mentioned yet is God.

319

:

He is actually the only one

who knows what it will take to

320

:

get your business to succeed.

321

:

How cool is that?

322

:

We have access to the master of the

universe who does know the future.

323

:

Why are we not tapping into him?

324

:

If you're not already daily

praying for your business.

325

:

I challenge you to start today.

326

:

Ask him.

327

:

What.

328

:

The next right.

329

:

Step for your businesses,

and then ask him to humble.

330

:

You.

331

:

Ask them to make you curious,

ask him to make you patient.

332

:

And to show you the wisdom of his will,

because I guarantee his will for you

333

:

and your business is probably going to

look differently than your own will.

334

:

And that's okay.

335

:

And then once you pray regularly

for your business, take action and

336

:

follow the inspiration you get because

sometimes those thoughts and feelings

337

:

and impressions will not make sense.

338

:

Very often they won't make sense.

339

:

Sometimes they'll be exciting.

340

:

Sometimes they'll be terrifying, but

trusting God and your own intuition

341

:

and interests is the only way to

build the business of your dreams.

342

:

Don't build your

neighbor's dream business.

343

:

Don't build the experts,

dream business, build yours.

344

:

And only you and God as your partner

will be able to succeed at that.

345

:

And it's going to be so

amazing when you get there.

346

:

All right, friends.

347

:

Go take that scary action.

348

:

Talk to you next week.
