Episode Summary

In this Saturday Stories Leadership Kit episode, I introduce a new leadership value: helping others. The featured story, The Talent Show, focuses on the teamwork skill of working together as a group of students prepares for a school talent show. At first, the task feels overwhelming, but everything changes when they recognize that each person brings different strengths to the team.

Rather than having everyone do the same job, the students divide responsibilities based on their unique talents. One student organizes schedules, another designs posters, another makes announcements, another coordinates performers, and another notices important details. Their success comes not from being alike but from contributing different gifts toward one shared purpose.

I also provide reflection questions that help students think about collaboration, teamwork, and the value of individual strengths. Students are encouraged to consider why teamwork can be challenging, how different abilities strengthen a group, and why helping others leads to stronger outcomes for everyone.

The episode concludes with a reminder that great teams are built through collaboration, not competition. Every student has something valuable to contribute, and when individuals use their strengths to help one another, remarkable things become possible.

Funky Teacher, Nicholas Kleve:

This is Mr. Funky Teacher with BeAFunkyTeacher.com. I'm coming to you with another Be a Funky Teacher podcast.

Welcome back, everyone.

Today's episode is called Saturday Stories Leadership Kit: Work Together — The Talent Show.

Before we jump into today's story, I want to ground myself in gratitude.

The first thing that I'm thankful for is people who quietly help behind the scenes and never ask for recognition.

The second thing that I'm thankful for is laughter with friends and family—the kind that makes your whole day better.

And the third thing that I'm thankful for is talents and gifts.

Every person has something they bring to the world, and I'm grateful for that.

Well, it's Saturday, which means it's time for another Saturday story from the Leadership Kit.

Today we begin a brand-new value: Helping Others.

Because leadership isn't just about improving yourself.

It's also about helping the people around you succeed.

So let's step into the story.

This episode is part of the Leadership Kit.

The value we're focusing on this week is Helping Others.

The skill students are practicing is Work Together.

And the story you're about to hear is called The Talent Show.

The characters in this story are Aliyah, Jaden, Sophia, Mateo, Leo, and Eli.

I'm going to read the story all the way through with no interruptions.

I'm just going to have you listen.

All right, let's go ahead and get started with the story.

The Talent Show

The school talent show was only a week away.

The group had volunteered to help.

At first, everyone thought it would be easy.

Then they looked at the list.

Posters.

Announcements.

Music.

Seating.

The schedule.

The stage.

There was a lot more to do than they expected.

"We're never getting all this done," Mateo said.

Jaden looked at the list.

"Yeah, this is huge."

Sophia grabbed a pencil.

"We need a plan."

Eli had already started sketching a layout for the stage.

Leo was reading through the schedule.

Aliyah looked around the table.

"Maybe we don't all have to do everything."

Everyone stopped.

"What do you mean?" Jaden asked.

Aliyah pointed around the group.

"Sophia is organized. Sophia should handle the schedule."

Sophia nodded.

"That makes sense."

"Eli is good at visual design."

Eli turned his notebook around.

A new poster design was already halfway finished.

Mateo laughed.

"You've been working on that already?"

Eli smiled a little.

Aliyah continued.

"Jaden likes being in front of people."

"Announcements," Mateo said.

Jaden grinned.

"I could do that."

"Mateo likes talking to people."

"I definitely do," Mateo replied.

"You can help coordinate the performers."

Then Aliyah looked at Leo.

"What about me?" Leo asked.

Aliyah smiled.

"You notice details nobody else notices."

Leo shrugged.

"That's probably true."

For the next week, everyone worked—not on the same thing—but toward the same goal.

When talent show night arrived, everything was ready.

The posters looked great.

The performers knew where to go.

The schedule worked.

The announcements were clear.

As the show started, Mateo looked around.

"We actually pulled this off."

Jaden nodded.

"Together."

Eli smiled.

Sophia checked the schedule one more time.

Leo quietly adjusted a sign that had fallen crooked.

Aliyah looked at the group.

"The show worked because everyone contributed something different."

Sometimes teamwork isn't everybody doing the same job.

Sometimes it's everybody bringing their best to the same mission.

Well, that's the story.

Our skill focus here is Work Together.

When we think about working together, Funky Teachers, it doesn't mean being the same.

It means contributing.

Helping.

Listening.

And bringing your strengths to the group so the group can succeed in whatever goal it's working toward.

Teams aren't built on identical people.

They're built on different people working toward the same goal.

As you use this story with students, start with a reflection question.

You might ask:

"Have you ever been part of a team where everyone had a different role?"

Then move into the noticing questions.

"Why did the group feel overwhelmed at first?"

"How did Aliyah help solve the problem?"

"What strengths did each person bring?"

Later in the week, you can ask students:

"Why is teamwork sometimes difficult?"

"Why are different strengths important?"

"How can helping others make a team stronger?"

Those are great questions to work through together.

This week is really about collaboration.

Notice moments when students help classmates.

Share responsibilities.

Contribute different strengths.

Work toward a common goal.

Name those moments.

Say things like:

"That helped the team."

"You contributed your strength."

"You worked together."

Students need to understand that great teams aren't made up of people who are all the same.

Great teams are made up of people who help each other succeed.

It's free for classroom use.

As you head into the week ahead, here's the leadership focus.

You don't have to do everything by yourself.

You don't have to be good at everything.

But you can bring your strengths.

And when people do that together, amazing things happen.

Well, if you found value in this episode, head on over to Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to your podcasts and hit me up with a five-star review and let me know what you think.

It helps more teachers find this space.

As you go into your day and into your week, I want you to remember to inspire greatness in young people.

And don't forget to be a funky teacher.

Bye now.
