James has issued a warning that our significance and sense of self-importance should not be rooted in something as fleeting and impermanent as riches and wealth. It is hard in a culture that elevates success and material wealth to heed his warning. Yet, God does not look at the resources we have to determine our significance. James and Jeremiah both let us know that our position before God is what determines our significance. Both poor and rich are on level footing in being able to live lives that display and demonstrate the reality of who God is. That display is based on how well we understand and know him, not on how much we earn.
