Transcripts

:

This is The Dwelling Place from Entrusted Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox, and today we're

reading 1 Kings chapters 2 through 4.

3

:

Is your heart ready?

4

:

Today we'll say goodbye

to our beloved David.

5

:

We'll be inspired by his

parting words to his son

6

:

And be amazed at the humility and

wisdom of Solomon in seeking the Lord.

7

:

But then Solomon's humanness will

be on display so that we understand

8

:

scripture is still pointing to a

king that is to come, Jesus Christ

9

:

If you started with us in Genesis,

you are now five-twelfths of

10

:

the way through scripture.

11

:

That's almost halfway.

12

:

As we head into

13

:

summer,

14

:

Speaker 73: I wanna

encourage you to not give up

15

:

If you think back to that when

and where statement you made, it

16

:

probably has to adjust a little

bit if your routine is adjusting.

17

:

If you listened on your commute,

you're gonna have to find a new

18

:

But don't give up on faithfully

seeking the Lord through His Word.

19

:

There is one Psalm of David

we haven't covered yet,

20

:

And you can find out which one that is

21

:

when you receive the June

reading plan in my next email

22

:

in First Kings chapter two, David

issues some parting words to Solomon.

23

:

When David's time to die drew near,

he commanded Solomon his son, " I am

24

:

about to go the way of all the earth.

25

:

Be strong and show yourself a man,

and keep the charge of the Lord your

26

:

God, walking in his ways and keeping

his statutes, his commandments, his

27

:

rules, and his testimonies, as it is

written in the Law of Moses, that you may

28

:

prosper in all that you do and wherever

you turn; that the Lord may establish

29

:

his word that he spoke concerning

me, saying, ' If your sons pay close

30

:

attention to their way, to walk before

me in faithfulness with all their heart

31

:

and with all their soul, you shall not

lack a man on the throne of Israel.'"

32

:

David ensures that Solomon understands

the fulfillment of God's promises to him

33

:

are dependent upon Solomon's obedience

34

:

I love that David

says, " Show yourself a man.

35

:

Obey the word of God

36

:

I've prayed this for my boys, and I

think it is awesome that coming from

37

:

this incredible warrior, he's telling

his son what really proves your strength

38

:

is your obedience to

the source of strength

39

:

Next, David asked Solomon to give

justice to two men that were worthy

40

:

of judgment and death earlier,

but David had shown them mercy.

41

:

It's hard to tell if David is asking

Solomon to avenge him by ending the lives

42

:

of these two men, or if he's trying to

set his son up for success and saying,

43

:

"Get rid of these two So they don't do

anything sneaky or sly after I'm gone?

44

:

One of these is Joab, it is Really

surprising to me that scripture never

45

:

records David finding out about Joab

being the one that killed his son Absalom.

46

:

It seems it would've been common

knowledge, as we know there were

47

:

soldiers watching when it happened

48

:

but he's never called to account for that

49

:

Do you remember Adonijah,

David's oldest living son?

50

:

He was the one having that party thinking

he was going to be the next ruler.

51

:

Well, he comes to Bathsheba, who is the

mother of Solomon, and asks for something

52

:

that seems innocent to Bathsheba,

but Solomon sees right through it.

53

:

It's likely that Adonijah was making

a play for the throne But my heart

54

:

as a mom is so blessed by the way

that Solomon treats Bathsheba In

55

:

two nineteen, so Bathsheba went to

King Solomon to speak with him on

56

:

behalf of Adonijah, and the king rose

to meet her and bowed down to her.

57

:

Then he sat on his throne and

had a seat brought for the king's

58

:

mother, and she sat on his right.

59

:

Then she said, "I have one

small request to make of you.

60

:

Do not refuse me."

61

:

And the king said to her,

"Make your request, my mother,

62

:

for I will not refuse you."

63

:

Okay, how sweet is this that the king

is bowing down to his mom, providing

64

:

a throne at his right hand, the place

of honor, and saying, "Whatever you

65

:

ask for, Mom, I'll give it to you"?

66

:

But then he executes justice on

those enemies of David, and he

67

:

ends the priesthood of Abiathar.

68

:

This fulfills God's word

generations ago to Eli that his

69

:

priestly line would be cut off.

70

:

David had honored Abiathar's faithfulness

to him, but now the priesthood is

71

:

reestablished in the line of Eleazar and

Phinehas, and Zadok becomes priest In

72

:

chapter three, I know you're gonna groan

with me because Solomon makes a political

73

:

marriage alliance with Pharaoh's daughter.

74

:

It was his most politically advantageous

marriage, but he didn't need to

75

:

disobey God to advance his kingdom

76

:

Next, we read that the people

were sacrificing at the high

77

:

places because no house had been

built for the name of the Lord.

78

:

These high places were hilltop altars

79

:

where pagan gods were worshiped.

80

:

But as Israel conquered the land,

they took over some of these

81

:

and made them altars to the Lord

82

:

Which is actually just combining the

ways of the world With our worship of God

83

:

And this is convicting for

us today and is never ideal

84

:

Verse three says, " Solomon loved the

Lord, walking in the statutes of David

85

:

his father: only he sacrificed and

made offerings at the high places."

86

:

And it's this context that makes

this next story so incredible to me.

87

:

It's a familiar one.

88

:

I'm sure you know it well.

89

:

Beginning in verse five, " At

Gibeon the Lord appeared to

90

:

Solomon in a dream by night.

91

:

And God said, "Ask what I shall give you."

92

:

And Solomon said, " You have shown great

and steadfast love to Your servant David

93

:

my father, because he walked before

You in faithfulness, in righteousness,

94

:

and in uprightness of heart toward You.

95

:

And You have kept for him this great

and steadfast love, and have given him

96

:

a son to sit on the throne this day.

97

:

And now, O Lord my God, You have made

Your servant king in place of David my

98

:

father, although I am but a little child.

99

:

I do not know how to go out or come in.

100

:

And Your servant is in the midst of

Your people whom You have chosen,

101

:

a great people, too many to be

numbered or counted for multitude.

102

:

Give your servant therefore an

understanding mind to govern your people,

103

:

that I may discern between good and evil.

104

:

For who is able to govern

this, your great people?

105

:

It pleased the Lord that

Solomon had asked this.

106

:

And God said to him, " Because you

have asked this, and have not asked

107

:

for yourself long life or riches or

the life of your enemies, but have

108

:

asked for yourself understanding

to discern what is right, behold,

109

:

I now do according to your word.

110

:

Behold, I give you a wise and

discerning mind, so that none

111

:

like you has been before and none

like you shall arise after you.

112

:

I give you also what you have not asked,

both riches and honor, so that no other

113

:

king shall compare with you all your days.

114

:

And if you will walk in my ways,

keeping my statutes and my commandments,

115

:

as your father David walked,

then I will lengthen your days."

116

:

And Solomon awoke, and

behold, it was a dream.

117

:

Then he came to Jerusalem and stood

before the ark of the covenant

118

:

of the Lord, and offered up burnt

offerings and peace offerings, and

119

:

made a feast for all his servants

120

:

This dream occurs right after Solomon

sacrificed at those high places.

121

:

It already reveals the mercy of

God to meet with him, and it's

122

:

a unique dream because Solomon

and the Lord are conversing.

123

:

Obviously, it was right and good

that Solomon asked this, and we

124

:

know that because God himself

is pleased by the request.

125

:

But I was led in an interesting

activity that challenged me on this a

126

:

couple years ago, where we had to try

to think if there were any negative

127

:

aspects of Solomon requesting wisdom

128

:

Initially, I thought, "How

can you even ask this?"

129

:

But as I pondered it I realized that

maybe all of Solomon's allowed him to

130

:

lose some of his reliance upon the Lord

131

:

Maybe it actually made him bored,

leading to his later downfall

132

:

And this thought is a little

encouraging to me because so often

133

:

I feel like I just don't have things

figured out, and it forces me to get

134

:

on my knees before God and ask for

help and to diligently seek His Word

135

:

And so even though I think it was really

beautiful that Solomon asked for wisdom,

136

:

I think God is also delighted By the times

you and I are at the end of ourselves

137

:

and keep coming back to Him to guide us

138

:

And I hadn't really thought of this

before, but this request of Solomon

139

:

actually blessed you and me and each

of our kids because it's this wisdom

140

:

and understanding that inspired

him to write the Book of Proverbs

141

:

and Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs

142

:

God allowed Solomon to be an instrument

to share His wisdom with all of us

143

:

In chapter three, we're given one example

of Solomon's insight as two prostitutes

144

:

come before his throne, which isn't

that amazing that anyone was allowed

145

:

to come?

146

:

before him

147

:

Both of these women had babies, but one

of them rolled over her child in the night

148

:

The one mother is accusing the other

of having switched her dead baby

149

:

with the live baby in the night

150

:

And Solomon says, " Get me a sword.

151

:

I'm gonna cut the baby in half so

you can each have a part of him

152

:

But the mother of the living

son interjects, "Oh, my Lord,

153

:

give her the living child, and

by no means put him to death

154

:

Solomon rightly discerned that she was

the true mother, and all Israel heard

155

:

about it and stood in awe of him He

understood the sacrificial heart of

156

:

a mother, And he knew a loving mother

would rather lose her access to her

157

:

son than allow him to lose his life.

158

:

Chapter four lists the administrators

and officials Solomon used

159

:

to help rule his kingdom.

160

:

We hear the extent of Judah and Israel

at this point, and that there are as

161

:

many as the sand by the sea, which should

remind you of the Abrahamic covenant.

162

:

But Israel still hasn't occupied all the

land God promised Abraham at this point.

163

:

And in case you're curious, for a

census update, the Israelites have

164

:

doubled their population from the

time they came in at Joshua's day.

165

:

They'd be about 4 million at this point

166

:

and even with all of Solomon's

wisdom, he goes against God's word

167

:

and his warnings in Deuteronomy.

168

:

He amasses wealth and horses.

169

:

We read that he had 40,000

stalls of horses for his

170

:

chariots and 12,000 horsemen.

171

:

This is most likely a copying

error because Chronicles

172

:

tells us he had 4,000 horses.

173

:

Still, it's directly in opposition

to God's commands for kings.

174

:

So we'll close being partially

inspired, but definitely disappointed

175

:

with Solomon, and being reminded that

we're not looking to establish heroes

176

:

here, but to seek the Lord Himself.

177

:

Let's pray.

178

:

Heavenly Father

179

:

We praise you that you are the source

of all wisdom and understanding And

180

:

we gratefully accept the pattern you

have set that we can come humbly

181

:

before you and to your word to guide

us for our life and our parenting

182

:

Please prevent us from seeking the answers

outside of you We pray for our kids

183

:

that as David taught Solomon to follow

the word of God, that our kids would

184

:

find their true identity in your word

and that you would give them a hunger

185

:

to keep coming back searching for you

186

:

Thank you for the sweet way

that Solomon honored his mom.

187

:

Help us to train our kids to

walk in honor and respect of

188

:

us and other authority figures

189

:

And Lord, we thank you for the warning

190

:

To not look to wealth or the pleasures of

this earth to find our contentment, but

191

:

instead to look to you as the giver of

all good gifts Thank you, Jesus, for the

192

:

way you modeled perfect wisdom for us.

193

:

It's in your name we pray.

194

:

Amen
