Matthew 7:28–29 (NKJV): And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, 29 for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
Jesus. Matthew 7:28, 29. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is Day 8 of 30 Days on the Mount of Blessing, pt 3–and other sayings of Jesus, pt 3–and other sayings of Jesus.
What was it about Jesus that left the people wide-eyed in wonder at his teaching? Why did they leave with such a deep sense that what he said was the solid truth? I’d guess it was because his life was the very essence of these very principles lived out. It wasn’t mere talk—he actually loved his enemies, going out of his way to bless them. He was pure in his thoughts and other-centered in his relationships. There was a sense of certainty because he lived out exactly what he taught. These weren’t just nice ideas to throw around at the dinner table—these were principles you could lock your life to. And he did. Daily. I think that, perhaps above anything else, gave his word power.
