00:07

Hi, this is Dr. Francis Malone, founder of the intuitive parents collective. I've been working with children and their families to provide holistic relationship based medical care throughout my career. This podcast is for parents interested in consciously raising naturally Healthy Kids. Here we will dive into topics that spanned childhood, and parenting as well as hosting exciting guests.

00:30

So whenever you find yourself at the end of your parody rope, tune into the intuitive parents podcast to get a new ideas about making parenting fun.

00:44

As parents, when we first decided to take the opportunity, challenge, and the responsibility of being a parent, we launch ourselves onto the biggest unknown roller coaster of our lives. In doing this, we demonstrate an amazing amount of courage, courage for facing our own selves and the needs of our child head on without a lot of support, knowledge or instruction.

01:08

We have our own life experiences, the ways that our parents have raised us the relationship with our partner and the rest of our family as guides, we jump in without a full understanding of the heart wrenching, humbling and expansive experience that parenting truly is, we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life with periodic dips into joy, recognition of the brilliance of our child, as well as all for their strength, and the depth of our love for them. But we end up moving ourselves and our children through life in an automatic way.

01:43

We tend to see ourselves as, quote, responsible for and required to do things to or do things for our child. But the reality of that relationship is actually way more complex.

01:56

Being able to see our child from infancy as a partner, or as a collaborator, helps us to forgive ourselves for what we don't know, and allow ourselves to grow with people while we learn what is required of us as parents.

02:11

This perspective shift also allows us the opportunity to give grace to ourselves and our child, as neither of us has ever been in this situation.

02:23

In this minute, at this age before. When we see our child as a person that we are collaborating with to create the day that both of us wish for. Can we come back to a place of seeing this person as someone with needs that they are trying to communicate.

02:38

When there are breakdowns and frustrations and hair pulling,

02:42

and possibly tantrums. It's because somehow we're not able to hear each other.

02:49

When we learn to step back, take a breath and give ourselves a little self love and understanding we can work with our child and we can defuse a situation

02:59

better.

03:01

Right in the minute we can stop moving forward in whatever the day requires.

03:06

Just stop, take a few breaths, organize our own internal stress response.

03:14

in organizing and regulating our own internal stress,

03:18

or frustration, we help our child to self regulate themselves.

03:23

Then frequently they adult and child can bring themselves back to a place where they can hear each other.

03:30

As parents, we are the guide for our child and our ability to ground ourselves and to be as stable as our responses to our child as possible is our responsibility.

03:42

The concept at first can be difficult, but the practice gets simpler over time.

03:47

The easiest time to begin this practice is when your child is an infant because it's so easy to see that very quick responses that grounding ourself, loving ourselves. Relaxing or tuning into our own breathing enables our baby to settle their crying, go to sleep and to rest in our arms.

04:06

Grounding and centering ourselves doesn't fix whatever is upsetting the infant or child. But it does help us have a clear mind to figure out what could be the problem.

04:17

In my practice, it's often true that caregivers, internal stress, anxiety or distress is actually being felt by the infant or child. In the end, it produces a kind of chaos inside them that they don't understand and makes them feel uncomfortable. So they react accordingly.

04:36

One thing that's interesting for me personally is that I teach this to parents all the time. Yet I lived it recently with my youngest child who's a 16 year old.

04:49

He was not feeling well and we were searching for a diagnosis and somehow I got tipped out of center out of my place of balance and into worry for my child's health.

05:01

This is absolutely

05:04

expected. But me being off center increased and exacerbated my child's distress and experience of the symptoms. The symptoms hadn't changed. My child's discomfort did not get worse. But as my brain was allowed to ruminate and worry, and I that I pretended to him that I was not worried, his reactivity and behavior became more untenable.

05:30

He became anxious and distressed about the same symptoms in a new way.

05:36

Somehow, I noticed and I started to give myself a chance to be okay with the fact that right now, I didn't know what was going on with my kiddo, and that I couldn't fix it in this minute, and that we would eventually figure out how to move forward.

05:50

As I organize myself, grounded myself and took care of myself, my child started to do better in his experience of daily life. Despite persisting symptoms.

06:04
