Speaker:

Hello and welcome to Women in

the Coaching Arena podcast.

2

:

I'm so glad you are here.

3

:

I'm Jo Lott, a business mentor

and ICF accredited coach

4

:

Microphone (Samson Q2U Microphone):

and I help coaches to

5

:

build brilliant businesses.

6

:

I know that when you prepare to enter

the arena, there is fear, self doubt,

7

:

comparison, anxiety, uncertainty.

8

:

You can tend to armor up and

protect yourself from vulnerability.

9

:

In this podcast, I'll be sharing

honest, not hype, practical and

10

:

emotional tools to support you to make

the difference that you are here for.

11

:

Dare greatly.

12

:

You belong in this arena.

13

:

Microphone (Samson Q2U Microphone)-10:

Welcome to the 31st episode of

14

:

women in the coaching arena.

15

:

I am so glad you are here.

16

:

Today, I'm excited to share a case

study conversation I had maybe six

17

:

months or so ago with Tracy Sharp.

18

:

A client of mine.

19

:

I love Tracy story, because what

she did was encompass coaching

20

:

into her love for design as well.

21

:

So what I always say to my clients is.

22

:

You don't have to start from square

one with your coaching business.

23

:

You can literally bring in every single

experience in your life to date to

24

:

your business to make you stand out.

25

:

To create something truly unique.

26

:

And that is what Tracy has done.

27

:

So I'm super excited to

share her journey with you.

28

:

Since our conversation, as I said,

this was about six months ago.

29

:

We had this call when she first

finished my program, she has

30

:

since launched and filled her

first group program and has other

31

:

organisations interested in buying it.

32

:

She has also launched a thriving

culture program and is talking to

33

:

two startup accelerators who are

interested in buying her program.

34

:

And she's doing one-to-one

coaching, group coaching, panel

35

:

discussions, and facilitation.

36

:

So again, it's not just about

one-to-one coaching with people.

37

:

You can bring in lots of different skills.

38

:

So don't think just because you have

this one skill now that you need to

39

:

forget everything else you ever did.

40

:

So that is why I'm excited to share

tracy's journey with you today.

41

:

I hope you enjoy.

42

:

Hi, Tracy.

43

:

Thank you so much for joining me today.

44

:

I loved working with you.

45

:

Please tell everyone watching

who you are and what you do.

46

:

Okay.

47

:

Yeah, I'm Tracy Sharp.

48

:

I was part of the business

of coaching program.

49

:

I ended up being in it for nine

months, so I did a six months and then

50

:

I extended to another three months.

51

:

My background is engineering and I have

my own business called Sharp Minds,

52

:

and I'm a coach and mentor for women

in engineering and also an advocate

53

:

for diversity in these industries.

54

:

You are completely amazing, and I can't

wait to reflect on your journey over the

55

:

last nine months of working together.

56

:

So before we started working

together, what was going on for you?

57

:

Yeah, no problem.

58

:

Yeah, so I think before business

to coaching, I started my

59

:

business in February, 2022.

60

:

And I was like posting social media.

61

:

I was sort of a bit all over

the place with my message.

62

:

I knew that I wanted to work with

women in design and engineering, but I

63

:

didn't really kinda have a clear idea

about what to really do about that.

64

:

I had no real idea about how

to gather momentum of it.

65

:

I had my website but I wasn't

really clear on the message.

66

:

And I'd done some, like initial

coaching of friends and things,

67

:

but then nothing else was really

happening until I joined the course.

68

:

Exactly.

69

:

So what were the most important frameworks

or things you used from the program?

70

:

I've used so much, honestly.

71

:

I've used so much from the program.

72

:

I think getting clearer about the message.

73

:

So like the, the kinda magnetic message.

74

:

So kinda getting clearer about what

you're doing and, and how you're doing it.

75

:

I learned a lot about

this, the social media.

76

:

I did the 30 day challenge.

77

:

I did that twice with you as well.

78

:

And so that got me really clear about

how to send the message out as well, and

79

:

the cadence that is really needed when

you're ramping up to releasing something.

80

:

I've actually had three different

lead funnels as well, lead magnets.

81

:

So I've got three on the go at the moment,

so it was like properly, step by step,

82

:

holding the hands really closely with

setting up the mechanisms for a mailing

83

:

list and lead magnet, how to do that.

84

:

And so I've got them on the go as well.

85

:

And then how to kind of

publicize them a bit more.

86

:

My my LinkedIn profile is

looking really awesome.

87

:

I've revamped my website and got

clear about the message that also I've

88

:

done four different webinars as well.

89

:

So like, there was really great advice

and step by step guides about how to

90

:

run and launch your webinar as well.

91

:

So all of that is really, it's

all kind of come together and,

92

:

and then also about Canva as well.

93

:

So you give some like, really

good advice about Canva.

94

:

So yeah, I I've.

95

:

Sorry.

96

:

Really, I think you have been

through and implemented every

97

:

single bit, so that's amazing.

98

:

So let's think about your journey in

particular and the results for you and

99

:

what you've achieved in the last year

and, and I know that none of us give us

100

:

the credit, so allow yourself to enjoy

and tell me about the amazing things

101

:

that you've done over the last year.

102

:

Yeah, we, we know that I'm not very good

at this, but yeah, I, I think what I

103

:

need to kinda give myself credit for is

the appearances that I've been making.

104

:

So I guess I would say that.

105

:

I don't have the kind of conventional

business model that coaches

106

:

normally have that it's kind of

like pure coaching one-to-ones.

107

:

I think for me, because I was

trying to advocate for diversity in

108

:

inclusion in the industry that I'm

familiar with what I have done is

109

:

a lot of talks a lot of seminars.

110

:

And I've really built

up my network as well.

111

:

And with advice from you, Jo, about

what's really needed to build up

112

:

your followers say on LinkedIn.

113

:

Yeah, so I've gone like, I

think it was about 600 contacts,

114

:

connections to begin with.

115

:

And now I just hit 3000.

116

:

I think two highest profile,

no, I'll say the three.

117

:

The three is high highest profile

paid appearances that I've done

118

:

so far have been with Unilever.

119

:

Shark Ninja and Brunelle University.

120

:

So yes, I did some paid

appearances with them.

121

:

And and what I will say, and I haven't,

I haven't told you this yet, I didn't, we

122

:

didn't talk about this offline but through

my connection with Char Ninja, they

123

:

introduced me to their coaching provider.

124

:

They're called Task Human,

that are American based.

125

:

And I got an in with them and I'm now

an associate coach with Task Human.

126

:

Amazing.

127

:

Congratulations.

128

:

Thank you.

129

:

Thank you.

130

:

So that just happened a

couple of weeks ago as well.

131

:

And so yeah, I think that to be

associated with high caliber,

132

:

well-known brand names and stuff.

133

:

And I think what I have done is I have

managed to get in the door and have

134

:

vulnerable and honest conversations

with a lot of people in my industry.

135

:

I'm becoming a lot more well known in

the industry as well, for what I do.

136

:

And that's been really exciting

because I think that I've been able to

137

:

positively impact women in engineering

through my webinars and seminars and

138

:

in-person stuff and workshops as well.

139

:

So I'm about to do my second

workshop with Shark Ninja.

140

:

It's gonna be my biggest ticket

thing that I've done to date with

141

:

over 40 people doing group coaching.

142

:

I guess that It hasn't followed the path,

which I believed would be conventional.

143

:

I've been able to get myself in front

of big players in the industry and

144

:

I feel really proud and excited to

become an ally for women that people

145

:

can approach me and talk to me, to

also share the good word about the

146

:

importance about allyship as well.

147

:

So the positive message

that comes with that too.

148

:

Yeah, and I did, I did so

much stuff in March was crazy.

149

:

I did four different appearances

at universities as well.

150

:

So not only am I positively impacting

people in the workplace, I'm positively

151

:

impacting people university before

they get into the workplace as

152

:

well, and sharing the message about

mental health and values and what

153

:

I learned along the way and also

talked at schools and stuff as well.

154

:

So it's been it's been a very

indirect path to coaching.

155

:

So oh yes, I'm also mentoring

as well, so I'm mentoring in

156

:

three different programs as well.

157

:

And that's supporting women in

design women globally and also

158

:

supporting our startup as well.

159

:

And that's a paid mentoring gig as

well, which I'm super excited about.

160

:

So and I've also launched a

podcast and I'm really proud of

161

:

my podcast as a body of work.

162

:

It's not so much about coaching it

is about the design process, which

163

:

I'm really passionate about and I've

been able to talk about design process

164

:

from an engineering standpoint, but

also from the coaching standpoint.

165

:

And I've been able to connect.

166

:

With wonderful, wonderful people

that are really passionate

167

:

as well in the same topic.

168

:

And it's something like I've

recognized in my journey that's really

169

:

important to me to keep as well.

170

:

So I'm really passionate about

supporting and empowering people and

171

:

I'm gonna keep going with coaching,

but the design aspect as well is

172

:

something that I'm still learning

how to smoosh everything together.

173

:

And so yes, that's been a

big learning curve and I'm.

174

:

Continuing that.

175

:

So it's been a lot about positive

messages and positively impacting people.

176

:

Oh, it's amazing.

177

:

And I think it's the perfect model for

people come into the program and they

178

:

think they have to forget everything

else they were ever interested in.

179

:

And what I always say is coaching

is just one skill that you can use.

180

:

Amongst all of your other amazing skills.

181

:

You do not have to forget everything.

182

:

So yeah, you're the perfect example.

183

:

Yeah, exactly.

184

:

And I think if people come to your

course as well they are working in

185

:

a place, you know, you've got people

like myself from engineering, we've

186

:

got someone that's got like a law

background and things like that, like

187

:

lots of different kind of environments.

188

:

And I think it is really important to

stay in companies and stay empathetic

189

:

to the people that you know as well.

190

:

So, like, I know that industry

and I'm able to share and enhance,

191

:

the experiences of other people

as well because of my background.

192

:

But I think that when I first started my

business, I was ready to leave the design

193

:

world behind and engineering behind.

194

:

I was ready to do that, but.

195

:

What was been really interesting is just

reflecting, like regularly reflecting and

196

:

having the cadence of reflection, which

comes from the culture of business, of

197

:

coaching is regular reflection and, you

know, asking myself the questions of like,

198

:

what's working, what isn't working, what,

what to keep and what I wanna let go of.

199

:

Yeah.

200

:

And just, I was ready to leave

it behind, but it, I just kept

201

:

bringing it back in again.

202

:

So it was like really interesting to

kind of have that perspective of like, oh

203

:

no, I just didn't ever wanna let it go.

204

:

Yeah.

205

:

It's a complete journey, isn't it?

206

:

It's it's never just a straight line.

207

:

And the personal growth

you've been through over the

208

:

last nine months is insane.

209

:

So I'm glad I asked you that question.

210

:

I need to ask you that

question more often.

211

:

Cause I learned more then than

I probably have about how you've

212

:

been doing for absolutely.

213

:

Ages, like the full amazing

achievements that you've made, so, yeah.

214

:

Oh my God.

215

:

What would you say your experience

of working together was like?

216

:

Yeah it's been really great.

217

:

I think that not only has there been

lot of really great mechanisms in there,

218

:

which are kind of es essential in the

sales and marketing machine that's

219

:

needed, cultivate your own business,

which I had zero idea about before.

220

:

But I think that I've really,

genuinely really loved the group

221

:

coaching and the regular meetups.

222

:

That was part of the course

and I think that hadn't really.

223

:

Valued it at the beginning, cuz I had,

I'd only really done like one-to-one

224

:

coaching before and, and we had like one

or two chats, one-to-one, but the, the

225

:

bulk of it has being in group coaching.

226

:

And what I definitely wanna share, and

this is the thing that I wanna shout

227

:

with the rooftops, is the community and

the group coaching is just so important.

228

:

It's so, so important.

229

:

Just like for accountability and

for support more than anything.

230

:

And you know, what the business of

coaching has built is it was absolutely

231

:

essential for me cuz I would've

given up a long time ago if I hadn't

232

:

have had it, I would've given up.

233

:

Like I've, I've set the business

of coaching dry basically with like

234

:

all the stuff that we had to offer.

235

:

And I really, I really appreciated,

like the camaraderie and support

236

:

and understanding of us all kind

of going through that journey.

237

:

And so, after the first three

months, I felt like I had ticked

238

:

a lot of the boxes and stuff, but.

239

:

You know, I continued to work with

you for another six months after I'd

240

:

done the initial coaching structure

because I just got so much out of it.

241

:

So it's just so essential.

242

:

And the people that you bring

into the circle are, are just

243

:

wonderful people as well.

244

:

And I'm still friends with

some people that, I talked to

245

:

Laura on the phone yesterday.

246

:

I met Natasha like a couple

weeks ago in the pub.

247

:

You know, I met her day

before she went away.

248

:

I like, Met Lorraine, like she's

checked in on me and stuff, so

249

:

people have been checking in as

well, and Oh, I, oh yes, Sally.

250

:

Sally was in London yesterday,

but I couldn't meet her.

251

:

its such big hearted people.

252

:

You know, it's been a

real pleasure to be part.

253

:

Amazing.

254

:

Gosh, I'm jealous now that

you are out and about meeting

255

:

people way more often than I am.

256

:

I need to get on and arrange

my in-person things soon.

257

:

So what's next for you, Tracy?

258

:

Where's your mission taking you next?

259

:

I've kind of gone a wee bit off

piece, so I, I have a kind of

260

:

slightly irregular story, but yeah.

261

:

What's next is I've gone back into

the design industry and I'm working

262

:

as a senior design manager for the

design age institute that develops.

263

:

Products to support an aging population.

264

:

So it's gonna be all about

inclusive design, it's gonna

265

:

be all about inclusivity.

266

:

It's gonna be about doing things

for a greater good for society,

267

:

for helping group of people.

268

:

I'm gonna be surrounded by people

who are passionate about inclusivity

269

:

and design and leadership.

270

:

And I'm gonna be in an environment

also where I'm supporting small

271

:

businesses or scale-ups and I'm

gonna be coaching and mentoring them.

272

:

Not only the design process, but

also just in general coaching and

273

:

kind of helping them reach their

goals and their targets because

274

:

it's, it's all for the greater good.

275

:

So I feel really excited about that.

276

:

I'm gonna be doing associate

coaching as well with task human.

277

:

Which is gonna allow me to have people

kind of coming into my world and I

278

:

can coach them through an online app.

279

:

And then I'm also gonna be

continuing with Sharp Minds.

280

:

And so I'm hoping to do a lot more

appearances and trying to cultivate

281

:

a program about that for businesses.

282

:

I've got a really interesting

partnership, which is in the background,

283

:

which could be really exciting.

284

:

Continue to do my podcast as well.

285

:

So we've got nine more episodes to

record for this season, which will

286

:

take me to the end of the year.

287

:

That's a really great body of

work that I've learned so much as

288

:

well, and it's been well received.

289

:

And yeah, I'm just gonna continue to

smush together my skills and passions

290

:

about supporting people, coaching people,

and the design process moving forward.

291

:

Amazing.

292

:

Thank you so much.

293

:

And who would you recommend

the business of coaching to?

294

:

So I would recommend if someone has

been in their business from like six

295

:

to 12 months onwards, if they're in a

coaching business, if they're really

296

:

just struggling to find momentum,

struggling to get the right tools,

297

:

not really sure what to do in terms of

building, the sales and marketing machine.

298

:

And then just generally looking for

support, mentally philosophically guess.

299

:

Or if you're feeling a little bit

isolated, in your coaching business,

300

:

working on your own, then join

this group of amazing women who are

301

:

incredibly supportive and it'll give

you all the mechanisms that you need

302

:

to get your business up and running

in a focused and controlled way.

303

:

Amazing.

304

:

What should others know

about working with me?

305

:

Oh, Jo's the best.

306

:

That one.

307

:

Jo's the best.

:

I would say that in terms with working

with you you're incredibly passionate.

309

:

You are incredibly informed as well,

and what is really great is that

310

:

you really practice what you preach.

311

:

So the fact that you're

constantly learning.

312

:

But then also to share what

you've learned as well.

313

:

There was Yeah, there was

just very open like incredibly

314

:

open, the door was always open.

315

:

And I guess there was always

regular opportunities to help with

316

:

not only the supporting side, but

also on the tech side as well.

317

:

So it ticks all the boxes.

318

:

I really loved the Facebook group

for the regular reflections as well.

319

:

So essential, and I loved your

ask me of anything, questions as

320

:

well, all learned from each other.

321

:

And we all learned that we're not alone

and we were empowered and supported.

322

:

And you were just incredibly positive, but

also really understanding and empathetic.

323

:

Thank you so much, Tracy.

324

:

You've been an absolute pleasure

to work with and I feel super

325

:

privileged to work with you.

326

:

It's been an absolute pleasure to

be in your world, in your community,

327

:

and it's been an absolute pleasure.

328

:

And, we're definitely gonna stay in touch.

329

:

We will, we will.

330

:

I'll get on with that in person.

331

:

Meet asap.

332

:

Thank you so much for your time, Tracy.

333

:

You're very welcome.

334

:

Thank you, Jo.

335

:

Microphone (Samson Q2U Microphone)-11:

I hope you enjoyed hearing how

336

:

Tracy has built her business.

337

:

Microphone (Samson Q2U Microphone)-12:

What most people don't realize

338

:

when they start their business.

339

:

Is, and the ICF have shown

this in this study recently.

340

:

That 40% of a coach's income is

generally through one-to-one coaching.

341

:

The other 60% is often through

various other things, just

342

:

like Tracy talked about.

343

:

So I hope this gives you an idea that it's

not always about back to back one-to-one

344

:

sessions and maybe that's what you want.

345

:

And I'm not saying that

that's not possible.

346

:

But why I'm saying is that most

coaches do a variety of other things

347

:

as well as one-to-one coaching.

348

:

Microphone (Samson Q2U Microphone)-13: If

you would like the support that Tracy's

349

:

received to build the sales marketing

machine so you become a key person of

350

:

influence in your niche and start to

attract paid opportunities like Tracy

351

:

did then click on the link in the show

notes to the business of coaching program

352

:

to get started right away and

get the support and all of the

353

:

knowledge that you need to turn

your dream business into a reality.

354

:

And like I say, at the end of every
