Speaker:

It's downtown.

2

:

Again.

3

:

Welcome back to another edition

of the daily Bible podcast.

4

:

I'm glad you joined me.

5

:

If you're wondering where pastor

PJ is, he's still on vacation.

6

:

That he'll be on vacation for

several more days to come.

7

:

So please don't miss him too much.

8

:

But if you do, you're always welcome

to text him, to let him know that

9

:

you're thinking about them and that

you can't wait to have him back.

10

:

I know that I can't.

11

:

Uh, quick announcement

to date is Sunday a demo.

12

:

That's not an announcement.

13

:

You probably know that

rd,:

14

:

And the announcement is that I

get to preach today at compass

15

:

Bible church, north, Texas.

16

:

And so I do hope that you'll join us.

17

:

I do hope that you'll be there.

18

:

I'd love to have all your

friendly faces smiling back at me.

19

:

Uh, if, of course, compass

north, Texas is your home.

20

:

If it's not, I don't expect you

to be there and that's okay.

21

:

You can go back to your own home church.

22

:

That would be appropriate.

23

:

But if you're here and this is your

church, I would love to see you there.

24

:

Uh, I promise you I've been praying

and studying and working diligently

25

:

all week long, praying for you.

26

:

Uh, that this urban would be especially

helpful for your present Christian walk.

27

:

So please be there.

28

:

I promise you I will

give it my best shots.

29

:

I always swing for the fences and

this is going to be no different.

30

:

So please, please, please be there.

31

:

Bring a friend.

32

:

Bring a neighbor, bring an

uncle, bring whoever you want.

33

:

Just bring somebody.

34

:

If no one else, bring

yourself, bring your family.

35

:

That'd be good.

36

:

Okay.

37

:

I think that's all I have.

38

:

I mean, there's so much

more that's happening.

39

:

I don't know about you.

40

:

I am loving the cicadas outside.

41

:

If you live in this part of the

country or you're in a part of

42

:

the country that has cicadas.

43

:

Uh, I didn't grow up with these guys.

44

:

And so this is kind of a new experience,

although we did have them last year.

45

:

But I've been going outside

and just staring at them.

46

:

I went out the other day

and I just watched him.

47

:

I found a couple that were

near, near one another.

48

:

And they started fighting and then one

kicked off the other, off the tree.

49

:

And next thing you know, he was

all by himself doing his own thing.

50

:

So it seems like they're

a bit territorial.

51

:

Uh, I'd imagine that there noises have

something to do with their mating.

52

:

That's my best guess.

53

:

I don't know.

54

:

Maybe I'm wrong on that.

55

:

But it's really fascinating

to watch these stubby little

56

:

translucent translucent black.

57

:

Oh, wait.

58

:

Their wings are translucent.

59

:

The black translucent wings

interact with the world around them.

60

:

They're very hard to spot unless

you know what they look like.

61

:

And even then, they're

still challenging to see.

62

:

That's incredible gift of creation.

63

:

I enjoy that hope.

64

:

You're enjoying that too.

65

:

Hope you're enjoying the wondrous things.

66

:

God has put around you, especially coming

off of some of the last things you read

67

:

in the Proverbs, maintain that wonder.

68

:

Keep an eye on the world

around you and enjoy it.

69

:

This is the life that God has given us.

70

:

And it's a good thing.

71

:

Okay.

72

:

Speaking of good things, let's jump

into first Kings at chapters 12 through

73

:

14, we're back in the narrative.

74

:

And now we're back in the chronological

sequence of the old Testament.

75

:

So we kind of stopped and we

looked at Ecclesiastes, these

76

:

which is not chronologically,

a book that moves us forward.

77

:

It's a book about Solomon's

reflections on his life.

78

:

The good, the bad and the

ugly and his conclusions.

79

:

Then we finished up the book of Proverbs,

which again is not going to move us

80

:

forward in the chronology, but it's going

to give us some more insight into the

81

:

first century, not the first century,

mind, the ancient near Eastern mind.

82

:

About how they understood wisdom.

83

:

And so we heard from Agur and

then we heard from king Lem,

84

:

mules mom, and of course, some

of his musings on a godly wife.

85

:

And now we're back into the Kings

of Israel and soon to be Kings

86

:

of Judas, we're going to see the.

87

:

Cataclysmic event it's called the divided

kingdom and it begins in chapter 12 of

88

:

first Kings and titled Rhea bones folly.

89

:

Now Rehoboam is Solomon's son.

90

:

So I'd imagine he heard a lot of good

things from his dad as a young man.

91

:

He heard the Proverbs, he heard all of the

wisdom that, that his dad gave him, but

92

:

it does not seem that it landed very far.

93

:

So Rehoboam ventures to check them and all

Israel meets him there to make him king.

94

:

And all of a sudden, you remember one of

those adversaries that Solomon made back

95

:

in chapter 11 of first Kings for yeah.

96

:

First Kings chapter 11.

97

:

Well, he shows back up.

98

:

Jeroboam the son of me.

99

:

Bet.

100

:

He shows up and now he's wondering,

what's this going to look like

101

:

now that Solomon's off the scene?

102

:

What's his son Rehoboam going to do.

103

:

And so Rehoboam to his credit.

104

:

Seeks to counsel of two separate parties.

105

:

The first party.

106

:

Is the council with the old men

who had stood before Solomon.

107

:

And then he asked him, what

do I do with this people?

108

:

They're asking me to lighten

their burden and their low to

109

:

perhaps decrease the taxes and.

110

:

And decrease the labor demands

in order to satisfy the kingdom.

111

:

So the old men tell him, look, if

you want to win the people, lighten

112

:

their load, do what they say.

113

:

Grant them some reprieve.

114

:

But verse eight says in first Kings

chapter 12, he abandoned their council.

115

:

And instead.

116

:

As he tossed out their counsel.

117

:

He now seeks the counsel of the

young men that he had grown up with.

118

:

Now, imagine this, you have two groups

of people, old wise, godly men, and then

119

:

young men who only know living in Beverly

Hills, all they've ever known was servants

120

:

and an ample supply of money and food.

121

:

And the, you know, the family

cars available to them.

122

:

They're driving the

Lamborghinis here and there.

123

:

They now respond.

124

:

To Rehoboam is quandary.

125

:

And they say something a bit crude.

126

:

You probably won't read this.

127

:

And then in the English language,

But they're making a suggestion

128

:

about the things that you should

say that are very inappropriate.

129

:

I'll just leave it at that.

130

:

And I'll leave you to kind

of figure that out yourself.

131

:

If you want to do some digging.

132

:

But they say, Hey, answered them harshly

and say, you do you think my dad was hard?

133

:

Wait till I get ahold of you.

134

:

And so.

135

:

They respond very harshly and Rehoboam

seems to adopt their, their attitude.

136

:

I don't know if he says

everything that they say.

137

:

But for seeking the counsel of the

elders and adopting the counsel of

138

:

his peers, he responds to the people

after they returned three days later.

139

:

Now I want you to notice here,

there's an absence council request.

140

:

He's got counsel from the old man.

141

:

He's got counsel from the young men, but

there's no evident counsel from the Lord.

142

:

It doesn't seek the Lord in this decision.

143

:

And so it's evident that his decision

is ill-advised from the start.

144

:

Even if the old man did have

some good things to say, and

145

:

perhaps it was the wisdom of God.

146

:

He doesn't ask God to confirm,

nor deny these things.

147

:

He just goes ahead and

moves along with that.

148

:

I think this is a really good

place for us to stop and think,

149

:

am I seeking the counsel of God

in the decisions of my life?

150

:

Or am I presuming upon him

by just making decisions?

151

:

And again, you can't.

152

:

Pray for every single thing in your

life, but you should pray about a lot.

153

:

Uh, most of your life, you have

opportunity to pray, even if

154

:

it's just under your breath.

155

:

A few seconds here, a few seconds there.

156

:

Not neglect to seek the counsel of

the Lord to ask him to lead your life.

157

:

And to give you the wisdom

to take the next step.

158

:

Verse 15 and chapter 12 of first Kings.

159

:

So the king did not listen to

the people, but here's, here's an

160

:

interesting twist for, it was a turn

of affairs brought about by the Lord

161

:

that he might fulfill his word, which

he spoke by a Hijah the Shilah night.

162

:

So God is.

163

:

Operating behind the scenes

here to ensure that there is.

164

:

There is a division of the

kingdom and this kingdom divide.

165

:

Is God's work.

166

:

And sometimes this is interesting.

167

:

Sometimes God is at work.

168

:

To divide.

169

:

This is God operating for

his sovereign purposes.

170

:

Now the sin behind it is not God

that's people, that's us making

171

:

decisions or in this case rehabil, but

the division itself, this is of God.

172

:

And so in 9 31, BC, the kingdom

of Israel and Judah divide.

173

:

Now you need to know here

going forward and the next.

174

:

The next several days that we're

in the Chronicles and Kings.

175

:

Here's the way that you

need to understand this.

176

:

The Northern kingdom is going to be

henceforth referred to as Israel.

177

:

This is not the, this is not

including Judah and Benjamin Israel

178

:

includes the 10 Northern tribes.

179

:

And they'll forever be known as

Israelis for this point forward here.

180

:

Israel just to give you a heads up here.

181

:

Doesn't have any good Kings.

182

:

No good kinks.

183

:

The verdict on all the Kings

in the north is bad news.

184

:

They did evil in the sight of the Lord.

185

:

So anytime you see an Israelite

king again, Northern kingdom, you're

186

:

not going to see a good verdict.

187

:

The Southern kingdom has

this mattering of good Kings.

188

:

Now not all of them are good.

189

:

There's a few that are bad.

190

:

Several that are bad, actually.

191

:

But many of them are good.

192

:

And so you have in the Southern kingdom.

193

:

God's preserved king.

194

:

He preserves this kingdom in

view of his servant, David.

195

:

He does this on behalf of David,

the promises that he made to David

196

:

in second, Samuel chapter seven,

he wants to follow through with.

197

:

And so he preserves a lineage

in the Southern kingdom.

198

:

And as of course, you know, the

Southern kingdom is the kingdom

199

:

by which Jesus himself comes.

200

:

Jesus is from the tribe of Judah.

201

:

And he's the one who rules

and reigns ultimately.

202

:

So all of this points forward to Jesus,

but that's how it's going to work.

203

:

The Northern kingdom is Israel.

204

:

The Southern kingdom is called Judah.

205

:

And that includes the tribe of

Benjamin, which you'll soon.

206

:

See.

207

:

Second half of verse, second,

half of first Kings chapter 12,

208

:

starting at verse 16 here, you see

that the division has taken place.

209

:

Uh, at the helm of the

Northern kingdom is Jonah dab.

210

:

Excuse me, not Jonah dab.

211

:

Uh, his name is.

212

:

Joe.

213

:

Leading the Northern kingdom is Jeroboam

the son of ni bet the Southern kingdom,

214

:

of course, at the helm of Rehoboam.

215

:

Rehoboam soon finds that the Northern

kingdom wants nothing to do with them.

216

:

And so he sends his task master named,

uh, Dorham he's, he's got a slightly

217

:

different name in the Chronicles,

but he sends his task master.

218

:

They beat him up, they kill him

and Rehoboam responds with okay.

219

:

Call to arms.

220

:

Let's go.

221

:

And let's rally everybody together.

222

:

Let's fight.

223

:

But God puts the brakes on.

224

:

It says stop.

225

:

Every man returned to his home

for this thing is from me.

226

:

And so to his credit, Rehoboam listens.

227

:

And the final few verses here in

chapter 12 of first Kings, you find that

228

:

Jeroboam starts inventing a new religion.

229

:

He builds golden calf.

230

:

Now it should remind you

of Exodus chapter 32.

231

:

This is a bad situation here.

232

:

He puts two calves in

two different locations.

233

:

In the first calf, he puts up

north in Dan and in the second

234

:

calf, he puts south in Bethel.

235

:

So the most Southern part

of the Northern kingdom.

236

:

And that means now.

237

:

Israel doesn't have to go to Judah in

order to offer sacrifices to Yahweh.

238

:

Why?

239

:

Well, because they have their own new

religion here in, in the Northern kingdom.

240

:

This is a bad thing.

241

:

Obviously, you know, this setting up

your own religions, setting up your

242

:

own priests and Kings are priests and

Levis, a bad situation altogether.

243

:

And this is the kind of sin that's going

to follow Israel for the rest of her days.

244

:

In first Kings 13, you

have two unnamed men.

245

:

One called the man of God and

one called an old prophet.

246

:

The man of God is told to go to Gera

Bowman and tell him behold, here's

247

:

what he says in verse two behold.

248

:

A son shall be born to the

house of David Josiah by name.

249

:

And he shall sacrifice on you.

250

:

The priests of the high places

who make offerings on you.

251

:

And human bones shall be burned on you.

252

:

So he's going to desecrate the altar

in the Northern kingdom, by the

253

:

hand of king Josiah, who's going

to come about 300 years later.

254

:

He does this and he says, this is the

sign that I'm going to give to you.

255

:

And then when Jera bombs like, hold

on a second, here you come back.

256

:

As he sticks out his finger, his

hand, or his finger shrivels up as

257

:

an, as a sign of God's judgment.

258

:

He asks, Hey, please.

259

:

I'm sorry about that.

260

:

Will you please restore my hand?

261

:

And then God restored his hand.

262

:

It seems after this situation here

that Jeroboam changes his approach.

263

:

He doesn't try to bully him anymore.

264

:

Now he tries to.

265

:

, not use force, but perhaps bribery,

look, you come to my place.

266

:

Look, you I'll take care of you.

267

:

I'll bless you.

268

:

Something like that.

269

:

And he says, look, I'm

not allowed to do that.

270

:

Verse nine.

271

:

Uh, it was commanded to me

by the word of the Lord.

272

:

You shall not eat.

273

:

You shall not neither eat bread

nor drink water nor returned

274

:

by the way that you came.

275

:

And so he departs.

276

:

But introducing a new

character, an old prophet.

277

:

Again, someone you don't know.

278

:

His, name's not mentioned here, but

he's an old prophet lived in Bethel.

279

:

His sons tell him that

this man had gone came.

280

:

Here's what he did.

281

:

And this old prophet goes

and finds the man of God.

282

:

And the clear words that should

stand out to you are in verse 18.

283

:

The old prophet lied to the man of God.

284

:

He says, look, you need

to come back with me.

285

:

God said that you need to come with me.

286

:

And so the old prophet successively

deceives the man of God.

287

:

And the man of God is

now sitting with him.

288

:

And then the word of the Lord

in verse 20 came to the prophet

289

:

who had brought him back.

290

:

Now, get this, the prophet

just lied to the man of God.

291

:

But now God is actually speaking to

this prophet and here's what he says.

292

:

Thus says the Lord.

293

:

Because you have disobeyed the word of

the Lord and have not kept the command

294

:

that the Lord, your God commanded you.

295

:

But you came back and

you did all this things.

296

:

He says your body shall not come

to the tomb of your fathers.

297

:

You're going to die.

298

:

And you're not going to

die in an ignoble way.

299

:

You're not going to be buried.

300

:

With your father's, which

is a great big deal.

301

:

It's a big deal for them in an honor shame

culture to be buried with their family.

302

:

And this case, God says you have forfeited

that because you've disobeyed my word.

303

:

And of course that's exactly what

happens In verse 24, it says here,

304

:

and as he went away, a lion met

him on the road and killed him.

305

:

Note here, the importance of

following the word of God, as you

306

:

know, it don't let someone tell

you it says something different.

307

:

In fact, if someone says they have a

word for you, men, I hope it starts with

308

:

the chapter in verse from the Bible.

309

:

Let us be the kind of people who

take God's word at face value

310

:

and understand it to be the

authoritative truth for our lives.

311

:

So many competing voices

in our lives will tell us.

312

:

And perhaps.

313

:

With good intentions.

314

:

. Make sure.

315

:

You know the word and make

sure you follow the word.

316

:

To do anything different is to

invite devastating consequences.

317

:

In first Kings 14, we finished

the reigns of both Jeroboam

318

:

and Rehoboam Rehoboam son.

319

:

Abijah get sick.

320

:

And so he sends his wife in disguise to

a hijab, the prophet who is in Shiloh.

321

:

God tells a hijab ahead of time.

322

:

This is going to happen.

323

:

And so as his wife makes

his way into his place.

324

:

He says, I know who you are.

325

:

Come on in.

326

:

Let me tell you what's going to happen.

327

:

Interestingly God says.

328

:

I'm going to spare the child because

there's something in him that's favorable,

329

:

not spare him in an ultimate sense.

330

:

He's going to let the child die.

331

:

But he's going to be buried and

that's not going to be true for

332

:

everybody else in Jura boom's family.

333

:

And so the end of his reign

results in the death of his child.

334

:

And the dishonorable death of

everyone else in his family.

335

:

So this is going to be the future

for Jeroboam the last few verses

336

:

here verses 19 and 20 tells us

that he rained for 22 years.

337

:

So he hit a pretty long reign.

338

:

But it was a devastating rate, a

negative impact on the people of Israel.

339

:

And again, it's going to color

the rest of their future.

340

:

Uh, rebel I'm in the Southern kingdom.

341

:

As a few final words about

his reign in his life.

342

:

Uh, he doesn't do well.

343

:

And that's kind of the extent of it.

344

:

Um, in the fifth year

of king Rehoboam shack.

345

:

The king of Egypt comes

up against Jerusalem.

346

:

We're going to find out a little

bit more about that tomorrow.

347

:

And we also find out that

the king of Egypt plunders.

348

:

Uh, Judah and makes Judah a vassal

to them, which now means that they're

349

:

subject to now, this is actually

kind of a good turn of events because

350

:

this was not the original plan.

351

:

Again, we'll see this tomorrow

in the reading and Chronicles.

352

:

But it ends, uh, unceremoniously.

353

:

He slept with his father and was buried

with his fathers in the city of David.

354

:

Um, and his son Abijah or Abijah

depending on which book of the Bible

355

:

you're looking at, Chronicles calls

him Abijah, but a by jum here in

356

:

first Kings, it rains in his place.

357

:

Lots of things we can take

from these leaders here.

358

:

Uh, both of these men, both

Rehoboam and Jeroboam suffered.

359

:

Uh, this disease of not.

360

:

Counting on the word of God, not

knowing the word, not responding to the

361

:

word, not seeking the Lord's counsel.

362

:

And you can see all the devastating

effects of their life in their lineage.

363

:

This is bad for them, but it's good

for us because it should instruct

364

:

us to be a people of the book.

365

:

Now, I know we sound this alarm

pretty regularly, but it's such

366

:

an urgent and necessary reminder.

367

:

I'm glad you're reading the Bible

with us so good that you're doing

368

:

this because it is protective.

369

:

And it's also good for you and

for your family and everyone else

370

:

around you that, you know, the word.

371

:

So keep doing that proud

of you for doing this.

372

:

Thanks for joining me today.

373

:

And it really helped.

374

:
