We are vacationing in Blue Ridge, Georgia this week so instead of our normal format we are featuring an extended segment of The Local Flavor. It might seem odd to talk about Georgia in a podcast about living in Sarasota, Florida but proximity to places and activities you love is a big part of choosing where you live. Shelley's customers often have specific reasons for living in Sarasota that involve how close it is to visiting Tampa, Orlando, Miami along with our great state parks! The one thing that Florida lacks is scenic mountain views, which a lot of new residents miss after moving to The Sunshine State. If mountains are what you are looking for, then Georgia is great location!

Okay well okay there's this great story that a realtor in Arizona was telling me about a situation.

Edward:

Arizona okay wow that's amazing okay that's great you know what let's go and start the news.

Shelley:

Wait what.

Edward:

That's just going type of news.

Okay so.

Shelley:

Okay wait you didn't even let the.

Edward:

No I did let's talk about the market snapshot so interest rates around 3% yeah and the median selling prices around 340 350 but there's nothing about,

Edward:

in Sarasota nothing available at that price that much anyway and lots of people moving to Florida very few homes Builders are excited and they're trying to build more so you won't go into the local flavor.

Okay so for the local flavor I'm so excited what.

Shelley:

What is it going on okay but I didn't get my story out about the Arizona situation and that market news.

Edward:

Everybody got the information they need.

Shelley:

Okay.

Edward:

Okay so for local flavor we're going on vacation.

Shelley:

So that's what this is all about we don't go for a couple of days and you're like a kid getting excited for Christmas.

Edward:

I am and I'm not alone.

Shelley:

I might have woken up a little early.

Edward:

A little early and a little hyper this morning and I know I'm surprised you weren't wondering if I switch to caffeine again.

Shelley:

Yeah I'm like dude I didn't get the story out and that market snapshot well Altru was kind of a rush job you didn't even let the recordings finish.

Edward:

How nice would it be if the real news like the Legacy Media if when they did the nose if they took all their 30 to 60 Minutes of garbage and compressed it 30 seconds I think we might be a little better off.

Shelley:

I think you might be right but you realize we still just go in a couple of days I was cutting through this quickly.

Edward:

I know.

Shelley:

Doesn't move up that timetable.

Edward:

Trying to by the way in that same thought process I was washing the dishes this morning I might have been going a little fast so we're probably going to need to go to like Crate & Barrel or Williams Timonium Sonoma when we get back home okay sorry.

Shelley:

Okay that's just great.

Edward:

Yeah but the I got it in quick and we're gonna need some more Band-Aids.

Shelley:

Okay I'll pack Band-Aids well okay so since we've rushed through the stories and we've rushed through the market news let's at least talk about the local flavor and why we like Florida.

Edward:

We will many reasons we love Florida beaches beaches are nice.

Shelley:

Beaches are nice but we deliberately chose the Sarasota area because its proximity to,

Shelley:

I'm seriously in an hour less than an hour we can be in Tampa we can be in st. Pete in a couple of hours we can be to Orlando we can be in Miami so there's Naples.

Edward:

Right and it's all the parts of you know people often talk about like you know we're selling Sarasota because this is obviously where we chose for our home,

Edward:

so we love it but it's also like one of things I realized living in California where I used to live in California was nothing great I just live in Fresno which,

Edward:

dead center the state and there's not a whole lot of excitement going on except for 45 minutes from Yosemite couple hours to San Francisco a few hours to Los Angeles,

Edward:

you can literally go to the mountains and you can literally go skiing and then go to the beach on the same day in California so.

Shelley:

We don't have the skiing but we have so many different things within a quick drive.

Edward:

Well though if we were if you want to get your fix for the mountains because a lot of us folks who came from California Colorado we're used to these Majestic mountains when we kind of missed that we come down to the peninsula.

Shelley:

It's a wee bit flat even Michigan has more Rolling Hills than floor.

Edward:

I was in safe Michigan Council I'm surprised there's not a meme that Michigan looking at Florida going damn he flat.

Shelley:

I know I always thought of Michigan is flat,

Shelley:

until like we've lived down here for seven years and last time we went home I did more driving instead of just writing around you know with like a family member driving and I'm like wow there's actually Rolling Hills here like we have a lot of them with the ups and the downs.

Edward:

And when we first moved here how many times mostly me not so much you but how many times did I take the wrong exit on the freeway because I'm used to orienting myself from a mountain okay the mountain ranges on my left or it's on the right well in Florida you don't have that massive landmark,

Edward:

so it's a little tougher.

Shelley:

When people say well you've got the golf but you know what unless you're standing near it you can't see it from the other side of town because it's all flat but back to our why we love Florida there's things.

Edward:

Yeah but it's not just about,

Edward:

we chose this part of the state because we're a little more of the Tampa Orlando Miami crowd then we are a say the Jacksonville Tallahassee Pensacola crowd nothing wrong with that it's just we like to be a little bit further,

Edward:

but we also wanted to we talked about it is we hadn't really neither one of us had spent a ton of time in the Southeast but we both love it down here,

Edward:

so we want to be able to take time to really explore like I have no interest in living in the west ever again and it's nothing California never just because California is kind of gross but,

Edward:

and they're just they're just kind of a big old dumpster fire right now but California has a lot of amazing things going for it.

Shelley:

Beautiful nature.

Edward:

But I can't bend their descent most more than half my life in California and on the west coast so for me I'm I really want to explore the southeast and the history and like that and all the way up to the Northeast.

Shelley:

And it is Handy being within driving distance you know of course young people today I'm going to sound like an old curmudgeon right now,

Shelley:

when I was a kid we lived in Michigan we were in the furniture industry High Point North Carolina was the mecca for where you would go to see what's new and what's next what's tiles what's Fabrics all of that stuff,

Shelley:

and when I was a kid we always drove down we turn it into a family vacation,

Shelley:

you quite literally Drew drove down drove down because it wasn't such with airline prices you know people didn't just just sit around like we do today you just hop on a flight and go someplace it was far more expensive and you just didn't,

Shelley:

you know,

Shelley:

you were truly the elite to hop on a plane and just take a family of four down and it was with of course back then you know speed limits were much lower but you just jump in the car and 8 10 12 hours later you're pulling in to wherever you need to go,

Shelley:

so we as kids saw a lot of you know Lincoln's cabin you know my parents always added some educational fun event for us to stop and see you know various you know museums or factories back when you could just tore factories and,

Shelley:

and stuff like that so we got to see a lot of that and we did a lot of driving then when I got older.

Shelley:

Sometimes we take the plane to me go oh it's such a hassle to get a Rent-A-Car and all of this stuff so we'd fly a couple years then we remind ourselves what a hassle it is then we drive a couple of years and remind ourselves at least when you're on a plane,

Shelley:

somebody else is taking care of it so you don't have to do anything well now the older I get the more I actually enjoy just,

Shelley:

the road trip you know the driving the seeing not necessarily although we will be taking I-75 out of Florida you know to drive where we're going and,

Shelley:

I still look just like jumping on some back roads now and then and just seeing the sights and doing the things and slowing it down a little bit getting out of the car every couple of hours and stretching our legs just because we determine our own schedule.

Edward:

Yep well and that was one things that early on when we first started dating way back,

Edward:

been that long ago but anyhow but when we first started dating it was funny because we can compare notes we both of the time our jobs required a bit of travel,

Edward:

which we were talking about this morning of all the all the miles and all the trips we logged over 20 30 year period but it was funny is we both formed similar habits,

Edward:

out of business travel which was not always just going to the you know the Big Chain hotel or a big chain restaurant which there's some comfort in that,

Edward:

consistency but if we can find you know I used to travel to specific towns in the Northeast our Northwest so he says been I used to go to like Eugene Oregon quite a bit I used to go to Spokane Washington and Coeur d'Alene Idaho,

Edward:

the same one so I had my favorite little hotel you know my favorite restaurant in places I would go but it was also,

Edward:

getting there like because I was going from California to Oregon or Washington some there wasn't very many times but occasionally I drove,

Edward:

sometimes I drove because there was an issue with United trying to get into San Francisco,

Edward:

and pretty much there was more than once I got stranded in San Francisco have to rent a car to get home.

Shelley:

Well there you go if you just plan on the drive it's not so.

Edward:

But it was taking that load brush that load rest traveled really The Road Less Traveled,

Edward:

you and I both shared in common that so there was times we'd go we first started traveling together we'd say okay let's go we like I do this follow up here and take this and we both were like oh that's an interesting weird thing to have in common,

Edward:

but it's not something you necessarily bring up on the first date.

Shelley:

Right yeah we'd both rather try a little family-owned Diner or you know an Italian restaurant we found some of the best restaurants we've also found some sketchy things,

Shelley:

yeah just much better than again hitting the same old things that we can see at home if you're going to go to the same restaurants and do the same things you do here why spend the money to go so I like the fact that we're just going to jump in the car,

Shelley:

we tell the people where are we going.

Edward:

We are going to Blue Ridge Georgia.

Shelley:

So by the time they listen to this.

Edward:

But yeah by the time you hear this we will bend there a couple days or a day couple days.

Shelley:

And it's going to be interesting because again I love the mountains people we always joke that people are either Beach people are mountain people some are both but usually you love one of the other we both really enjoy beaches but when it comes right down to it we love the mountains,

Shelley:

then you know as you were reading me the weather forecast I actually had to go out and buy some closed-toed shoes cuz.

Edward:

Oh we both did yeah we had both get some clothes.

Shelley:

Yeah the only thing I own four shoes are either flip-flops sandals kind of thing or the tennis shoes I'd wear when we go you know biking or hiking or whatever

Shelley:

so it's like I'm not wearing tennis shoes every day and somehow 30 degrees out in the evenings and night I'm not going to be one of traipsing around and flip flop so I actually had to go buy some socks and closed-toed shoes.

Edward:

I did by G had one pair of jeans.

Shelley:

Yeah you had one pair of jeans so we had to get you some long pants.

Edward:

And then I had to find my box my little teeny tiny box of cold weather clothes that I kept just in case it's got like two jackets it's got two or three scarves.

Shelley:

He had a flannel shirt in there.

Edward:

Flannel shirt knit cap some knee.

Shelley:

Well and you really had that,

Shelley:

going up to visit my family in Michigan like we each had a jacket which I bought a couple of years ago when we went up for Christmas and you know I found a scarf and some mittens and you had a cap and.

Edward:

Yanik capua.

Shelley:

But it's like wow somehow all of our shorts and sleeveless shirts while I wear the sleeveless shirts,

Shelley:

doesn't go so well in the mountains you know it this time of year.

Edward:

Well and we were very fortunate the weekend before we drove up to Georgia,

Edward:

we went to this my mom up in the Villages and The Villages can have occasionally a little cold snap so when we were there we went out to dinner and went being on the patio because it was it was a nice restaurant and we didn't have reservations because you know I'm a I'm a mother.

Shelley:

Well let's face it we went to dinner at 4:30 we didn't think we needed but its ability.

Edward:

The Villages yeah any rate so we went to dinner and we froze our butts off on this patio and I wasn't even under the heater I was so cold wearing shorts and a t-shirt and flip-flops and it was 55 degrees and that,

Edward:

yeah and Wendy and turns out that the first for about half our trip in and Blue Ridge as can be around 40 to 50 degrees I was like oh this is 50 degrees.

Shelley:

Oh yeah it was cold enough sitting out of that patio at your mom and I were at least closer to the heater but I literally had like the cloth napkin they give you I had to get him to give me a second one that I could use as a napkin because the first one had like stretched over my legs trying to keep warm his best as possible.

Edward:

And it's so funny because I remember being a kid I went to high school in New England and I remember 50 degrees to how we were out running in shorts and t-shirts.

Shelley:

My parents constantly had yell at me when I was a kid to put on you know boots because I'd be out just playing in the snow and tennis shoes and my feet soaking wet and freezing cold and now I'm like what do you mean it's below 70,

Shelley:

no I like it a little below 70 but 55 and windy was chilly.

Edward:

I'd go hang out with friends when I was in high school and they're all wearing like ski pants,

Edward:

to go play in the snow and I'm wearing jeans and I'm about got hypothermia because my jeans are just soaking wet you know.

Shelley:

But you're very temperature tolerant now.

Edward:

I am yeah I've always been pretty good about it the funny thing is I've always when I was younger I was much more tolerant of cold than I am was of heat,

Edward:

and the older I get the more tolerant I am of heat than cold even before moving to Florida,

Edward:

so that's probably why I wanted to move to the southeast but also I just I've always loved the southeast you know I enjoy this part of the country the people are great Foods great that I like the land of the geography is a landscape by mean the geography,

Edward:

but again this both of us grew up in families that traveled a bit and did a lot of road trip my dad was military,

Edward:

so there is my my family my extended family is all from upstate New York but we seem to always for most of my life we kept getting stationed in California,

Edward:

so my parents one year it was trained one year it was a like a full-size passenger van we had and then one year was a couple years was motorhome but we've been across the country,

Edward:

three or four times I've been to for 48 of the 50 states.

Shelley:

Yeah I haven't been to most of the West like I have the east side of the country,

Shelley:

like this side of the Mississippi River I've been to pretty much every state I think other than main I haven't been there but

Shelley:

you know I've been to most of those and quite a few of them you know on the west side you know I haven't been to the Dakotas and a few other things but you mentioned train I just I know this is turning to the Ed and Shelly show sorry,

Shelley:

this is who we are I.

Edward:

This is always been the initial a show it's just this time it's not about real estate.

Shelley:

Yeah I do look forward to some day doing the sleeper car train thing first off I think the train would rock me to sleep you know that motion and I've just never done that and I don't know it looks cool.

Edward:

Well it's not the same as going on the long passenger train green of the Transcontinental but the,

Edward:

in Blue Ridge to actually have there's quite a big deal about the railroad up there and there's there's there's a train tour that's like a couple hours I think I hadn't really looked into it yet but another thing we also do is we if we've never been to a place before,

Edward:

we do our best to not over plan,

Edward:

and just kind of like okay as long as we've always joked about it it's like the only thing we really ever have to get nailed down as transportation and lodging was that taken care of ask erosions I how many times you been on trip that you've actually were bummed because you didn't plan Excursion you missed out I.

Shelley:

Almost Never.

Edward:

Versus having a bunch of over plan.

Shelley:

Over plant and quite frankly the stuff that you find on the internet,

Shelley:

that one what to do in a lot of places will a lot of that is the same like you see the same 10 things over and over and it's like well,

Shelley:

but what else does that that area have to offer that the locals know about but it's not touristy enough like people wouldn't come here on vacation for that,

Shelley:

but it's definitely worth seeing definitely worth doing it work learning be close to the Appalachian Trail you know where we want to jump on that and get a little exercise there's so much to do,

Shelley:

much like down here but we're going to have different views and different.

Edward:

It's different things when she had mountains in like that.

Shelley:

I'm probably not going to see a lot of palm trees or alligators.

Edward:

Shouldn't see any Alligators.

Shelley:

You might see a bear.

Edward:

Do we get much higher likelihood of seeing it bare-root just yesterday it was funny we were pulling out of the parking lot at Lowe's driving past Culver's no but we saw an alligator he said yeah.

Shelley:

We didn't see a bear yes we did a big one he was out sunning himself he was a big boy.

Edward:

It was at least 7 feet long it was a good-sized gator it was kind of funny first I thought it was fake like someone left out from Halloween but.

Shelley:

But no it was real.

Edward:

It was pretty amazing it's just weird I mean we see him frequently around parks and stuff but we don't really see him too often in parking like near stores so I thought that was kind of interesting but,

Edward:

but yeah so yeah we're looking forward to it the reason we want to talk about what we're thinking of you know Georgia with the local flavor because as this trip was coming up,

Edward:

we're like Well we'd like to share this in this show and honestly we're gonna take a little break this week so that's why we want to we'll be off on vacation doing it but it's again we got the conversation of where you live is more than just,

Edward:

like the town you pick or the house you pick and you have this conversation with customers a lot,

Edward:

there's a lot of people who wanted take the other through its associates are you know near retiring retirement age or at retirement age they wanna take those road trips they.

Shelley:

And a lot of my customers,

Shelley:

have our views or campers I know that because I'm helping them find properties with where they can store them so they too want to talk about you know what can you do where you've got like a day's worth of driving,

Shelley:

you know what where can you get an eight to ten hours what kind of things can you see in do so we just thought we'd share a little bit of that today and,

Shelley:

and you slow down for 10 seconds while we've set.

Edward:

I'm so excited the well the thing is and so just kind of some statistics here from Sarasota you can get to the state line my about is about four and a half hours.

Shelley:

Four and a half hours.

Edward:

And then then it's like another Lee the state line is literally like the halfway point between here in,

Edward:

and in Blue Ridge is like from Sarasota to the state line is almost the same as the whole length of Georgia,

Edward:

because Blue Ridge has I think it's only about 30 minutes south on the roads anyway it's about 20 30 minute drive to Tennessee or 20 to 30 minute drive or maybe about 45 minute drive to North Carolina.

Shelley:

As we talked about possibly popping over to Chattanooga Tennessee.

Edward:

Yep Chattanooga been there when we first moved down here so that's cool but let's talk about you know wasn't just random we were going to almond take a little side trip here it's not random that we were just going to Georgia we had other plans.

Shelley:

We did have other plans we were supposed to be leaving today is today the six.

Edward:

Now we should have left on Saturday now we would left on Friday.

Shelley:

Yeah so anyway right now we should have been in the lovely state of Hawaii but that just didn't work out like.

Edward:

No because at the time when we booked the trip before you canceled it the lovely state of Hawaii was going back into a lovely state of lockdown for covid and we just weren't interested in spending a ton of money.

Shelley:

But yeah well the nice part was I won the trip Century 21 for,

Shelley:

top producers company-wide not just within my brokerage there are certain different Milestones that you hit in once you hit them you get to be invited to the top agent Retreat and it's in Hawaii and they pay for certain things like my broker would pay,

Shelley:

you know hotel and once you hit a certain level they pay airfare and they do all of this so I had qualified and we won the trip,

Shelley:

and of course us being what we are flying to Hawaii takes a considerable amount of time from Florida I mean.

Edward:

Heads you can get to Europe faster.

Shelley:

Yeah you can literally get T you know I can be in Germany quicker than I can be in Hawaii

Shelley:

so we were going to as long as we're going we added extra time we were going to spend more time you know not just on the big island but go to Maui and you know we had booked a bunch of excursions and then,

Shelley:

Hawaii started locking down again and quite frankly we didn't want to spend,

Shelley:

thousands and thousands of dollars you know for our portion of it only to get over there and not because certain events were also being closed down so I'm sorry,

Shelley:

Excursion it may or may not be available come November so we didn't want to get over there and go yes Hawaii's lovely but I can sit on a beach here all day,

Shelley:

you know just as well as I could there.

Edward:

I've been Hawaii couple times,

Edward:

and you've never been hands over and I've never been to the Big Island I've never been to Pearl Harbor there's a lot of things I because I went to Maui twice which Maui is amazing if you live in California or if I lived in California still Maui would be a regular vacation for me,

Edward:

and maybe the other Islands but from what I understand from other people who've been to all the islands Maui's amazing we were going to go to was it,

Edward:

the big out we're a wahoo and and then I get the cities in the islands mixed up,

Edward:

Lulu's on Oahu right.

Shelley:

I don't know I've never been denied.

Edward:

Anyhow we were going to go to two islands we were going to get it to Islands but here's the trick if there's one thing to be discussed on like,

Edward:

as much as I think Hawaii is amazing for the amount for the expense and the time it takes to get there from here it's just like,

Edward:

if we're going to go let's go once let's make me do it big and it wasn't so much and because honestly the lockdowns it seems like things of relax a little bit so they're people who are going for Century 21 have a great time.

Shelley:

Yeah they're all over there right now I'm sure they're loving it.

Edward:

Having a great time and that's fine.

Shelley:

Three months ago we truly with a Delta variant we didn't know if it was going to be open.

Edward:

Yeah everything was the numbers were going the wrong way and it just wasn't worth rolling the dice because again if we go I don't want to go a whole bunch especially when Florida my opinion sorry Hawaii I think Florida has got better beaches,

Edward:

I think Florida's got better food Hawaii Hawaiian Foods unique but Florida's got better food and I think Florida's got a lot more to see,

Edward:

plus you can get here on a car.

Shelley:

Yeah.

Edward:

In a car I mean literally when Ela is that halfway point from Florida to Hawaii it's like so yeah we'll be going to Hawaii eventually but congratulations to you because you were a what was your level this year.

Shelley:

I was Emerald this year.

Edward:

And this is your there's.

Shelley:

20:21.

Edward:

Right and this your second way is your second thing you learn in the Masters are first time.

Shelley:

I think was the first time because they have Ruby level and I skipped that.

Edward:

Okay right.

Shelley:

It's straight to Emerald that was for 2020s production and 2021 at this point I should be the next level up and be diamond or possibly even.

Edward:

That's what I was thinking because you were worried kind of earned it for this year you've returned one of the master levels.

Shelley:

Yeah I've already qualified for the emerald level so if I do nothing else the rest of the year and I already have like six closings in December that those numbers haven't been counted into it.

Edward:

And how many out of your brokerage of how many hundreds I don't know if you know this number but how many are Masters Runners typically do you think.

Shelley:

It's it for most brokerages it's less than ten percent,

Shelley:

the that end up going you know because again Century 21 is a huge corporation you know with over eighty and a hundred offices over a hundred and twenty thousand agents worldwide and and this is worldwide people can qualify for these,

Shelley:

um so it's less than ten percent of all of those that end up qualifying and they do it either by sales volume or,

Shelley:

units sold because let's face it if you live in Manhattan and you sell two properties that were worth 30 million each well you've just outscored somebody who lives in maybe Missouri.

Edward:

Or Michigan.

Shelley:

Store Michigan that you know they may have to sell they might sell 30 houses well 30 houses even though it didn't add up anywhere near that you know 30 million each on the to sold Manhattan,

Shelley:

they're do different ways of producing so they counted each Direction so people can qualify it's a great program and they take good care of us and it's lovely I feel bad that you know I was looking so forward to earning the trip but,

Shelley:

it just didn't make sense for our family this time but next year we've already qualified so who knows maybe this time next year we'll be talking about you know.

Edward:

About wherever because this is not always in Hawaii right.

Shelley:

It's a I don't know I know a few years it's been in Hawaii it would be a shame if it was always in Hawaii for the Hawaiian agents because hey congratulations you won a trip to home.

Edward:

That would be like when we've gone to conferences and stuff as entry 21 in Florida it's convenient because we can drive there but everybody else is jacked other minds and we're like that's Florida.

Shelley:

I know I said well and I kind of joked that watch the first year I'm going to qualify you know the trip will be in Miami,

Shelley:

it's like oh that's nice but you know I wanted Hawaii so anyway we were thrilled to be able to you know I was thrilled to be nominated,

Shelley:

yeah it was it was really flattering and you know,

Shelley:

my broker in my office manager cat were both you know extremely complimentary you know that they make,

Shelley:

they encourage success you know they're not just one of those that they want to provide you in Beach or anything like that you know they celebrate your victories with you so that was very very nice but instead of going to Hawaii we decided what we've already got the time booked off,

Shelley:

what else can we do and we both just kind of went,

Shelley:

I'd rather go on a mountain trap and after living in Colorado we talked about that and we're like well I would be jump on a plane when we can jump in our our vehicle,

Shelley:

and be there.

Edward:

Well that that's the funny part 2 is,

Edward:

and how many friends of ours had to take flights for business or vacations whatever recently and with all this all the stuff that's going on with the labor shortages with even Airlines now,

Edward:
