And I know like me, you have over time, bought lots of gear, you're not

just bought everything all together.

but yeah, for people who don't know you, maybe just give us a brief introduction

So I started way back in the day, creating like commercial video for

people at a small local company.

Jeff: 00:01:56

I would do like commercial, like long form videos and then started doing,

Jeff: 00:02:00

when, blogging and I started building websites, I built flash websites.

Jeff: 00:02:05

Remember those flash websites, using remember front page and all the old

stuff that we have to get rid of.

hand code tables, all that nastiness that we used to have to do.

and then I started doing social media because my clients needed help with that.

Jeff: 00:02:21

And I said, if I help my clients, I probably need to do it myself.

Jeff: 00:02:23

So I wrote a blog and I started, I was listening to a podcast and I heard about.

How it was like this platform called Pinterest could drive

Jeff: 00:02:33

all this traffic to, your blog.

Jeff: 00:02:35

And I'm like, Ooh, that's what I need.

Jeff: 00:02:36

I have a new blog.

Jeff: 00:02:36

I need traffic.

Jeff: 00:02:37

I need to do this.

Jeff: 00:02:38

So I went and did that and I saw it, saw results.

Jeff: 00:02:41

And I, so I wrote this article called manly Pinterest tips.

Jeff: 00:02:44

And number one, it was about sharing a secret board with my daughter.

Jeff: 00:02:47

And that kind of went.

Jeff: 00:02:47

Went crazy.

Jeff: 00:02:48

And then I said, okay, they've got something here.

Jeff: 00:02:50

So I started a show, back in the wild west days of Google plus when

Jeff: 00:02:55

the live video was just coming out.

Jeff: 00:02:58

And I had four other guys who had way bigger followings than I did.

Want to be on the show.

And we did this show called manly Pinterest tips.

And it was a lot of fun.

We got to interview people like Guy Kawasaki, the, producer of

pretty woman and under siege.

And just, it was so much fun.

Back when live video was first taken off.

Jeff: 00:03:13

So that led to, me doing that show, then a podcast.

And then I got hired by social media, examiner to do their Pinterest for

them, which led to, speaking gigs, getting more and more embedded with

Jeff: 00:03:24

that team, they're, doing a lot of their live video production.

And then I started my own show, social media news live about three years

ago, it's a live show and podcasts.

And that's where we are now.

Yeah, there's a big long journey there and

10 years.

Google plus and all that kind of stuff.

But you, yeah, social media news live is an awesome show.

So One of the things that I know you get a lot of comments about,

not just your beard, but also your, background, your studio setup.

Ian: 00:04:05

What makes your studio setup unique?

Jeff: 00:04:08

So it's really interesting.

Jeff: 00:04:09

So I am actually, this is a portable building outside of my house.

Jeff: 00:04:14

So we live on three and a half acres.

Jeff: 00:04:16

And so I tell everybody I have a 30 second commute, which I just go out to my office,

Jeff: 00:04:20

which is great when the kids were here.

Jeff: 00:04:21

My kids are now out of the house, but it was a place where

Jeff: 00:04:23

I could go and get work done.

Jeff: 00:04:25

I could still be present, but I also had my own space that wasn't

Jeff: 00:04:28

in the house, which turned out really, nice, especially when they

Jeff: 00:04:30

were home during the summer months.

Jeff: 00:04:32

So I have been in this for Over 10 years now.

Jeff: 00:04:36

it's finished out.

Jeff: 00:04:37

It's got wood ceilings.

Jeff: 00:04:38

It's really great.

Jeff: 00:04:39

I am getting a little cramped and I always tell people that

Jeff: 00:04:42

I have the cone of cleanliness.

Jeff: 00:04:44

You can't see all the junk on the other side because, that's the way I made it.

Jeff: 00:04:48

This behind me, I remember way, I used to just have a, like shelves behind me.

Jeff: 00:04:54

And when I first got started, I was actually using my, I think it was my, the.

Jeff: 00:04:59

built into my computer.

Jeff: 00:05:01

And I, this is just like wood slats, barn siding that I got from Lowe's and then

Jeff: 00:05:07

the signs my kids started with, there's a.

Jeff: 00:05:10

A manly man cave sign right here.

You can't really see very well because we're zoomed in but Then we started

Jeff: 00:05:16

editing the signs and that's been my setup ever since and people seem

Jeff: 00:05:19

to like it And I haven't changed it.

I have changed equipment over the years But the background the place

where i'm at is pretty much the same,

me that the, most important place to start is the audio, isn't it?

Then you got problems.

So tell us a little bit about your microphone and audio setup

Ian: 00:06:00

and why you chose what you got.

Jeff: 00:06:03

Yeah So exactly what you said in like start with audio first.

Jeff: 00:06:06

That's the most important people forgive Bad video, they won't

Jeff: 00:06:09

really forgive bad audio, but you don't have to go crazy and spend a

Jeff: 00:06:12

gazillion dollars on your audio gear.

Jeff: 00:06:14

So what I was able to, I started, I think first with a blue Yeti and that

Jeff: 00:06:19

plugged right into my computer was USB.

Jeff: 00:06:21

but as I was the pro version, which had XLR and also a USB, Shannon Hernandez,

Jeff: 00:06:27

my friend who helps me actually produce Guy Kawasaki's podcast now.

Jeff: 00:06:31

Is the one who recommended to me, I use that for years.

Jeff: 00:06:33

I used it for years.

Jeff: 00:06:34

And then I went to a Heil PR 40.

Jeff: 00:06:37

And then most recently I have the new, Shure SM seven DB, which I

Jeff: 00:06:43

am on right now, which I really but it didn't all happen at once.

Jeff: 00:06:46

Like I started with the Heil and then moved up from there.

Ian: 00:06:51

Yeah.

Ian: 00:06:52

that's the thing.

Ian: 00:06:53

You don't have to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars

Ian: 00:06:57

on your setup to begin with.

Ian: 00:07:00

it's, just actually just getting started is the most important thing.

Ian: 00:07:03

So as well as your microphone, Presumably with the show is the show I can't remember

Ian: 00:07:08

the, with your show, is it, USB as well, or do you plug it into an audio interface?

Ian: 00:07:14

How, what's

plug it into an audio interface and the cool thing about the new

Jeff: 00:07:18

SM7, Joe Rogan made it famous.

Jeff: 00:07:21

The, but this one, the DB actually has the cloud lifter built into it.

Jeff: 00:07:26

So a lot of people wanted more gain with their Shure microphone.

Jeff: 00:07:29

So they would get a cloud lifter, which is a piece of technology

Jeff: 00:07:32

that actually boosts their gain.

Jeff: 00:07:33

So they have more Places to play with their audio to boost it up a little bit.

Jeff: 00:07:38

And now it's built into it with the sure SM seven DB, which I really like it.

Jeff: 00:07:43

It sounds, I think it sounds really, good.

Jeff: 00:07:45

And then it goes into my roadcaster and I still have the original roadcaster.

Jeff: 00:07:49

I haven't had a reason to upgrade yet.

Jeff: 00:07:51

I get jealous and I want new gear all the time, but I'm, I can wait dies

Ian: 00:07:56

Yeah.

Ian: 00:07:56

Yeah.

yeah, I've got the new broadcast as a pro too.

And to be honest, it, the disadvantage with it is to a couple of disadvantages.

Ian: 00:08:04

First of all, it's, It takes longer, much longer to start, you press the on switch

Ian: 00:08:09

and then you have to go for a cup of tea.

Ian: 00:08:11

and then the second thing is it is more complicated to use.

Ian: 00:08:15

So it is a little bit smaller, but.

Jeff: 00:08:18

One of the things I would like to get if I had to do it over

Jeff: 00:08:21

again, I love my, I love the sound.

Jeff: 00:08:23

I love all the processing that's built into it.

Jeff: 00:08:24

If you hear it, my voice right now, it is going through the processor that

Jeff: 00:08:28

the Rodecaster has, which I really but.

Jeff: 00:08:32

The new duo has all of that and it's a much smaller footprint on this on

Jeff: 00:08:37

this on your desk This one has four Inputs, I don't need four inputs.

Jeff: 00:08:42

I really just need one and if I have a guest Like somebody

Jeff: 00:08:44

come live in my studio.

Jeff: 00:08:45

I just need another one.

So I don't think the duo would be perfect for my my use, cause

Jeff: 00:08:51

this is right now overkill.

Jeff: 00:08:52

So if I started over, that's what I, that's the one I would probably pick.

Same here, I think.

Yeah.

so let's move on to cameras.

Ian: 00:08:59

so your choice of cameras and maybe any kind of, I don't know, hacks or

Ian: 00:09:05

tips that you've, found over the years.

Jeff: 00:09:08

So for me, the cool thing was, I started, like I said, with the camera

Jeff: 00:09:12

that was on my computer, which wasn't the best, but it got the job done.

Jeff: 00:09:17

And seriously, it was fine.

Jeff: 00:09:19

And then I moved up to a webcam.

Jeff: 00:09:21

I think of the logic tech.

Jeff: 00:09:22

Oh, they're still out there, but they're, they were such good cameras,

Jeff: 00:09:25

and they were relatively inexpensive.

Jeff: 00:09:27

Then I moved up to the Logitech Brio for a while, which is the 4k camera.

Jeff: 00:09:31

And now I have the, I just use the Canon M 50.

Jeff: 00:09:34

It's actually just the first version.

Jeff: 00:09:36

There's the M 50 Mark II that's out, but I have a, I think it's a 22,

Jeff: 00:09:41

millimeter lens on there to make it have this more shallow depth of field,

Jeff: 00:09:45

because I don't have a lot of room.

Jeff: 00:09:47

The way I'm laid out this way in my, my office, behind me.

Jeff: 00:09:52

So I had to get a more, higher F stop lens or lower F stop lens to, to

Jeff: 00:09:58

have that kind of blurry background effect that I want, as much as I

Jeff: 00:10:02

can for the office that I'm in.

Ian: 00:10:05

Yeah, that makes sense.

Ian: 00:10:06

And, that's the setup that I had.

Ian: 00:10:08

I, for some reason, for whatever reason, I just had some

Ian: 00:10:10

problems with it shutting off.

Ian: 00:10:12

And I did, I, I went through a lot of the things You just have

Ian: 00:10:16

to find out what works for you.

Ian: 00:10:18

but the Canon, so yeah, the Canon M50 is great and you don't

Ian: 00:10:22

have to have a capture card.

Ian: 00:10:24

You just, you can plug it directly in via USB, which is cool.

Ian: 00:10:27

Yeah.

Jeff: 00:10:28

it straight into my, Mac and I've, used it that way ever since,

Jeff: 00:10:31

which is, it's been really handy.

Jeff: 00:10:33

It's really cool.

Jeff: 00:10:33

I that's probably the next thing I will upgrade is my camera, but

Jeff: 00:10:36

for now, it, works perfectly fine.

Jeff: 00:10:39

And to be honest with the new max, and if you have a good iPhone and you're not,

Jeff: 00:10:44

you don't need it during your show, those cameras on those iPhones are really good.

Jeff: 00:10:48

And so that's an option as well.

Ian: 00:10:50

And I was just talking about last episode.

I was talking about the little Belkin attachment.

Ian: 00:10:55

If you have a MagSafe iPhone, you can just put it on top of your laptop.

Ian: 00:10:59

And it's, it is amazing.

Ian: 00:11:00

The quality is amazing.

So lighting, I don't know about you.

Ian: 00:11:05

But lighting for me has always been a struggle trying to it just, it

Ian: 00:11:09

seems more of an art than a science.

Ian: 00:11:11

So tell us a little bit more about your lighting setup and

Ian: 00:11:13

what you've, had over the years.

Jeff: 00:11:16

I love my lighting system.

Jeff: 00:11:18

Because one, I used to have the big, I was back in the day when I did those

Jeff: 00:11:21

video, shoots, I'd have those lights that I have to schlep around and carry

Jeff: 00:11:26

and then set up and they got hot.

Jeff: 00:11:28

And now I have the, I use the Elgato key lights and I love them because I,

Jeff: 00:11:32

they tie right into my stream deck.

Jeff: 00:11:34

I can turn them on and off just with a press of a button and

Jeff: 00:11:36

I can adjust them that way.

Jeff: 00:11:38

And so those are, and they don't get hot because in Texas, even

Jeff: 00:11:42

my little office gets really hot.

Jeff: 00:11:45

and.

Jeff: 00:11:46

They're just wonderful.

Jeff: 00:11:47

And they actually attach to my standing desk.

Jeff: 00:11:49

And so where, if I'm standing or sitting, they actually go up and in the

Jeff: 00:11:53

perfect distance, with that as well.

Jeff: 00:11:55

So they clamp right on my desk.

let's move on to computer stuff.

Ian: 00:11:59

Now, I've, got an M1 Mac mini, which I love, but I have to admit, I'm not, I

Ian: 00:12:06

I'm not usually a jealous person, but I'm a little bit jealous of your setup.

Ian: 00:12:09

Tell us a little bit more about what your computer is and why you went for it.

Ian: 00:12:13

Cause we, we had quite a lot of, we had a chat about this

Ian: 00:12:16

when you were looking at this.

Jeff: 00:12:19

the thing with me is I was using an iMac for a long time and it was great.

Jeff: 00:12:22

It, I had, it worked really well.

Jeff: 00:12:25

but what happened was Ecamm, announced ISO video, isolated video, and you

Jeff: 00:12:31

had to have max silicone to use that.

Jeff: 00:12:33

And I'm like, okay.

Jeff: 00:12:34

Time for a new computer because for me, being able to have the separate

Jeff: 00:12:37

tracks allows me to repurpose things way easier, before I was having to use

Jeff: 00:12:41

another computer, which is a PC that was using vMix, but now, because I

Jeff: 00:12:45

love EKM and all this stuff you can do inside of it, I needed a new computer.

Jeff: 00:12:49

So I went with the, the Mac studio.

Jeff: 00:12:52

The fast chip on that.

Jeff: 00:12:54

I got the one that was just pre configured.

Jeff: 00:12:55

I didn't want to wait.

Jeff: 00:12:56

So I just bought the one that was like that you could go down and get, I'll

Jeff: 00:13:00

probably upgrade, someday to a little faster, some more RAM and stuff like that.

Jeff: 00:13:05

Cause I do a lot of video editing, but for now it's perfect for live streaming.

Jeff: 00:13:10

It's just an editing is so much faster now.

Jeff: 00:13:13

I love my Mac studio.

Ian: 00:13:16

Yeah, it's amazing.

so you went with, because I think there's two different ones.

Ian: 00:13:21

There's the max chip and there's the ultra chip, which is overkill

Ian: 00:13:26

for pretty much everyone, I think.

Yeah.

I think I got to remember which one I got.

And how much memory did you go for?

So I have the, Apple M this is when it first came out.

So I think there's some, even some more configurations that came out, but April

M one max, it's got 32 gigabytes of RAM.

Yeah, that's cool.

Ian: 00:13:54

So you've got that.

one other thing that I just remembered I was going to ask you about, because

we've not quite covered your camera setup, have we, because I know you have used an

iPhone as well, sometimes for downward shots and use some special software.

Ian: 00:14:10

Tell us a little bit about that.

but I meant to ask you that before.

Yeah.

So for doing like my Amazon video reviews and stuff, that's

great to have a top down camera.

Jeff: 00:14:21

And I do some carving videos too, like wood carving stuff.

Jeff: 00:14:23

And it's great to have.

Jeff: 00:14:24

So I just use an old, I think it's a, iPhone 12, I believe,

Jeff: 00:14:29

and it has a great camera on it.

Jeff: 00:14:30

So I just use that.

Jeff: 00:14:31

It plugs right into my, my, Mac studio and I use e cam for using it as a second

Jeff: 00:14:37

camera, but I also use, there's a app for it called, I think it's called screens.

Jeff: 00:14:41

I got to double check that Ian.

I think it's called screens that e cam recommended to use an app because it takes

Jeff: 00:14:46

away a bunch of the overlays that you might have, and it also lets you lock.

Jeff: 00:14:51

Your color settings and lock your white balance and stuff like that.

Jeff: 00:14:54

And so I, it's actually right up here, right above me on an arm.

Jeff: 00:14:58

And it just points down all the time and I can switch

Jeff: 00:15:00

cameras to it relatively easily.

The one I use is called camo.

I use, Adobe Audition, Adobe Photoshop to create graphics.

I'm a big fan of all the Adobe Suite.

I've been using them for years.

Premiere is, one where I do the heavy editing in.

I Get the clips and stuff from Descript, and then I take it sometimes to Premiere.

And once again, Descript lets you export that out, and so it just can

be imported directly into Premiere to do some fine tuning with.

I've also started using a tool for vertical videos that I really like,

because I was able to get it on AppSumo, and I don't have to pay a subscription.

Which does a really good job of, using AI to find clips and then

And so a lot of times I'll take the Descript and I'll there in the AI

I'll take those, drop them into Minvo.

and then sweeten them up a little bit because it also will pull

using AI B roll that makes sense.

iMac for years and stupid Apple will not let you use the iMac as another monitor.
