(Warning: this episode includes content regarding suicide. If you are not in a good space to hear thoughts on this topic, we recommend listening at another time. Be well & take care of yourself.) We're getting into all our feelings in this one. In this episode, Minji shares the story, memory, & lessons learned from her first love, Jay. In celebration of his life & the lasting impact he made on her in the many years since they fell in love at church as 10-year-old kids, Minji reflects on some of her most beautiful & painful moments. She goes into the joyful innocence & heart awakening of a first love as well as the lasting friendship that also veered into unhealthy territory at times. She shares the process of losing him to suicide in 2018 & how that has shaped her until now. She hopes that in commemorating Jay, she can continue her healing while also helping others process their own pain & keep finding light at the end of their tunnels.

Listen to Inheriting from LAist & NPR

"Inheriting" is a show about Asian American and Pacific Islander families, which explores how one event in history can ripple through generations. In doing so, the show seeks to break apart the AAPI monolith and tell a fuller story of these communities. In each episode, NPR’s Emily Kwong sits down with one family and facilitates deeply emotional conversations between their loved ones, exploring how their most personal, private moments are an integral part of history. Through these stories, we show how the past is personal and how to live with the legacies we’re constantly inheriting. New episodes premiere every Thursday.
