Sonja:

Welcome again.

2

:

It's Sonja here and coming at

you live from my, well let's call

3

:

it my command center of chaos.

4

:

This is where I usually have my IT

consulting laptop open when next door

5

:

my leather crafting machines are humming

in the background and usually I can

6

:

hear my kids arguing in the kitchen

over who gets the last cookie or.

7

:

Well, whatever they always fight about.

8

:

It's just another day

in my life with ADHD.

9

:

So today we're diving into

something that I would like to

10

:

call the portfolio lifestyle.

11

:

Or as I sometimes think of it, how

I turn my inability to focus on

12

:

something That is my superpower.

13

:

So let's rewind a bit.

14

:

Remember when we were kids and everyone

kept telling us focus on one thing?

15

:

Yeah, that really worked

out great, didn't it?

16

:

I tried, I really did.

17

:

But every time I focused on just one

thing, I felt like I was suffocating.

18

:

My brain was screaming for

more and was unfocused,

19

:

all over the place.

20

:

So, choosing my future career in

my early teens was hell as well.

21

:

I mean, how can you choose only one thing?

22

:

One thing that you're going to

23

:

do for the rest of your life.

24

:

So, I really struggled with the

focus on one thing problem into,

25

:

well, into adulthood really.

26

:

I mean, school bored me.

27

:

Work bored me and I was always

looking for my next kick.

28

:

And then one day it hit me.

29

:

What if instead of fighting my need

for variety, I would embrace it?

30

:

And that's when it started to click.

31

:

I started with my IT work,

you know, the responsible job

32

:

that actually earns you money.

33

:

It was quite a learning curve at first.

34

:

But very soon it became more of the same.

35

:

So I got bored and I switched

jobs, learned new things, did

36

:

again and again and again.

37

:

But then at some point I was

really good at what I was doing.

38

:

I was moving up and I really needed more.

39

:

So I started to get extensive hobbies.

40

:

Although I'm incapable, really, of

keeping hobbies as just hobbies,

41

:

I mean, I'm making big investments

in schooling, licensing, equipment,

42

:

and it brought me my first business.

43

:

It was a company making soaps,

creams, and bath products.

44

:

I was enjoying the chemistry, the

research, and becoming better than great.

45

:

And of course, you know, even though

it's a hobby, I couldn't keep it as that.

46

:

So I set up a Etsy shop.

47

:

I started selling at markets,

all the things, and, you

48

:

know, I was really good at it.

49

:

At some point I needed something new.

50

:

So I bought a sewing machine.

51

:

And when I say I bought a sewing

machine, I mean, I went full ADHD

52

:

and got the fanciest one I could find

because, you know, what if something.

53

:

It's there that it can't

do otherwise or whatever.

54

:

So I need a really good one.

55

:

I mean, here's the thing

about us ADHD folks.

56

:

We don't do hobbies like normal people.

57

:

You know how some people casually

mention, Oh, I like to knit sometimes.

58

:

Well, that's just not us.

59

:

We don't knit.

60

:

We become yarn experts,

learn to spin our own wool.

61

:

Maybe have a few sheep and probably

start an Etsy shop to selling hand dyed

62

:

artisanal yarn and do that within a month.

63

:

Case in point, my sewing adventure.

64

:

It started innocently enough.

65

:

I thought I'm going to make

some cute outfits for the

66

:

kids, for Halloween, whatever.

67

:

And it really was nice, but I got bored

and then I started to do more and more.

68

:

And fast forward three months and I'm

knee deep in leather scraps and I've got

69

:

an industrial grade sewing machine that

could probably survive an apocalypse

70

:

because it's huge and it's sturdy.

71

:

And I'm staying up until 3am

watching YouTube videos on

72

:

advanced leatherworking techniques.

73

:

Oh, and of course, I started a business.

74

:

selling custom leather bags.

75

:

Because, why not, right?

76

:

But here's the cool part.

77

:

All of these different interests

and skills, they feed into each

78

:

other in the most amazing ways.

79

:

That creative thinking from my soaping and

leather work, it helps me come up with out

80

:

of the box solutions for my IT clients.

81

:

And the project management skills from

my day job, Well, they've made me a pro

82

:

at juggling business life and family

life and anything that gets thrown at me.

83

:

Now, for most people, my

life sounds like a chaos.

84

:

And they're not wrong.

85

:

You know what the kicker is?

86

:

This beautiful mess is actually

what keeps my ADHD brain thriving.

87

:

Here's some cool science behind

this, because, you know, I, I love

88

:

to geek out on things like that.

89

:

So, our ADHD brains are actually

wired for this kind of variety.

90

:

We thrive on novelty, and it's like

our brains are these dopamine seeking

91

:

missiles, always on the lookout for

the next hit of excitement or interest.

92

:

And when we switch between

different activities, it's like

93

:

we're giving our brains a workout.

94

:

And so what happens if we're

stuck on a boring work task?

95

:

Well, that's no problem.

96

:

Let's go craft something for a bit.

97

:

And feeling creatively blocked?

98

:

Well, no worries.

99

:

Time to dive into some problem

solving for that IT project.

100

:

So our brains are continuously

switching between one and the other.

101

:

And that keeps it flexible.

102

:

And this portfolio lifestyle that I

have isn't just about having multiple

103

:

income streams, although that is of

course a nice bonus, it's also about

104

:

creating a life that keeps our ADHD

brains engaged, challenged and fulfilled.

105

:

And it's about embracing our need for

variety instead of fighting it and

106

:

trying to, like focus on one thing.

107

:

And look, I know it can be

really overwhelming at times.

108

:

And trust me, there are days when

I look at the chaos around me and

109

:

I think, what the heck am I doing?

110

:

But then I take a deep breath and I

remember that this is my superpower.

111

:

I am able to manage all of this.

112

:

So to all of my ADHD sisters out

there feeling like you're too much

113

:

or not focused enough, I see you

and I'm here to tell you that you're

114

:

not scattered, you're not anything,

but you are multi passionate.

115

:

You're not unfocused, you're adaptable.

116

:

And in this crazy ever changing

world, that's your secret weapon.

117

:

In the next couple of weeks, we're

going to dive into how to actually

118

:

manage all these passions that we have

and doing that without burning out.

119

:

So until then, embrace your beautiful,

complex, multi passionate self.

120

:

And you're not too much.

121

:

You're just enough of everything.

122

:

And the next time someone asks you

about your hobbies and you start

123

:

sweating because you know your hobby

involves a 10 year business plan and

124

:

possibly some heavy machinery, just

remember that's what makes you amazing.

125

:

This is Sonja.

126

:

Keep the fire burning, ladies.

127

:

We'll see you next time.
