Transcripts

Francis:

We’ve got 28 years to decarbonise the UK’s energy systems.

Francis:

It’s really critical for us to find those innovations that are going to help us decarbonise.

Chris:

We’ve really only just scratched the surface of what we need to do. What is the art of the possible? How far can this be taken?

Matt:

Welcome to Bright Spark. This podcast is for entrepreneurs, inventors, innovators, technologists... anyone who really wants to put their shoulder to the wheel to help drive down the carbon footprint of our energy networks.

Graeme:

That’s Ofgem’s main interest. It’s just to protect the interests of existing and future consumers. Our ultimate aim is to deliver net zero at the lowest cost.

Matt:

You can’t have an energy system without the energy networks. You can’t get electricity without the energy networks. You can’t heat your home or your business without the energy networks.

Matt:

I’m Matt Hastings. I work at Innovate UK where we’re partnering with the energy regulator Ofgem to deliver the Strategic Innovation Fund. Our mission with this fund is to find and finance the most brilliant people and the most collaborative and workable ideas for the energy networks to help really drive down UK energy closer to net zero.

Tim:

It’s a very large battery – a 50-megawatt battery – and it can provide power to about 11,000 homes for an hour.

Matt:

This series takes us deep into energy network innovation, meeting brilliant people, hearing from great organisations driving really exciting projects and pushing for real, tangible innovation.

Chris:

We’re really keen to open the net as wide as possible. There may be some fantastic organisations that are in the defence space, or aerospace, or have developed something amazing for NASA that works on the spaceship that orbits the sun but actually, reusing that technology for the energy systems may suddenly be a complete game-changer.
