Welcome to The Joyful Creative.
2
:I'm Deborah O'Toole.
3
:I'm a multi passionate creative
and I believe regular creativity
4
:is essential for well being.
5
:Whether you love painting, writing,
knitting, music, gardening, or any
6
:other creative pursuit, here you'll
find the inspiration and support
7
:to make your creative practice a
joyful priority in your busy life.
8
:So let's get creative.
9
:Well, hello, friends and welcome back.
10
:Today, I'm going to express.
11
:What people might think is an unpopular
opinion, which is just that I am not.
12
:Somebody who gets excited
about Christmas early.
13
:I know it's only mid-October, but
there's already Christmas decorations
14
:and the shops and it drives me crazy.
15
:I don't like it.
16
:I don't like seeing Christmas decorations.
17
:Before December or hearing
Christmas carols before December.
18
:And it's not because I'm a Scrooge
or that I don't love Christmas.
19
:And I know that there are very,
very many people who just love
20
:to get the decorations up in
the tree up as soon as possible.
21
:But I just don't like the long lead up.
22
:I feel that sometimes by the
time Christmas comes around,
23
:you just sort of over it.
24
:Also because I've been a
musician for my whole career.
25
:My work is usually pretty frantic
right up until about mid December.
26
:And I just can't even think of feeling
festive in any way until my work is done.
27
:And that's usually mid December.
28
:So I get into the Christmas spirit.
29
:Then, and I really enjoy it then.
30
:Having said that I am calling your center.
31
:The fact that if you, uh, intending to
give handmade Christmas gifts then you
32
:do need to start thinking about it.
33
:mid-October or even beforehand.
34
:And giving handmade gifts is such
a beautiful thing, and it's a great
35
:way to express your creativity.
36
:It's a great way to.
37
:Embark on a project, if you're
a little bit in between projects
38
:or you're stumped about.
39
:What creative project
you should start next.
40
:Giving gifts, not just
Christmas presents birthday.
41
:Uh, anniversary wedding presents.
42
:Uh, any kind of handmade gift
is a lovely thing to give.
43
:And I get a lot of joy out of
giving gifts that I've made myself.
44
:So, if you do have the time and
the inclination to make gifts
45
:for Christmas presents, I do have
some ideas and some pointers.
46
:That might be helpful.
47
:So, first of all, have a think about
what you're good at, what it is that you
48
:like to do creatively, and also what you
want to be spending a lot of time doing.
49
:I'm aware that you are all probably
doing different creative things.
50
:I'm sure there are knitters painters.
51
:Scrapbookers.
52
:You know, all sorts of creative
people out there and each one of those
53
:disciplines could make beautiful presence.
54
:but is that what you actually
want to spend time doing?
55
:Maybe you actually want to have a break
from doing the thing you normally do.
56
:And do something completely different.
57
:It's up to you, but some
creative activities.
58
:Are quite time-consuming and if you do
have the time, then absolutely go for it.
59
:But if you're planning to give a
lot of handmade gifts, You might
60
:want to consider the amount of
time that things take to make.
61
:aNd whether you've got time to do that.
62
:In the middle of the Christmas rush.
63
:Just remember that.
64
:Your creativity should be joyful.
65
:This is why this podcast is
called the joyful creative.
66
:Because I full one.
67
:I'm a person that gets it in my
head that I'm going to make things.
68
:And I'm going to give them as gifts and
then it becomes this overwhelming task.
69
:And then all of a sudden, it's not joyful.
70
:At all.
71
:And I find that my labor of
love is, well, there's not much
72
:love in it, put it that way.
73
:And I feel, I wouldn't say go as
far as to say I feel resentful,
74
:but it becomes a big chore.
75
:And I wonder why I took
it on in the first place.
76
:Because I had this great idea back in
September that I was going to make all
77
:the gifts and while I'm in the middle
of it, it just becomes not very joyful.
78
:So.
79
:I would recommend.
80
:Thinking carefully about what you're
going to make, how many gifts you're
81
:going to make, and whether you can
actually manage it in a joyful.
82
:Calm.
83
:And loving way.
84
:So that's the first thing to think about.
85
:Also think about your recipients.
86
:For example, I know that
there's probably not one.
87
:Male in my family.
88
:Who would like one of my handmade gifts.
89
:How my gifts just seem to
go really well to women.
90
:And girls.
91
:I don't know why.
92
:A little boys, maybe I remember.
93
:Sewing.
94
:Costume capes for all of my nephews one
year, and they really enjoyed those,
95
:but that's when they were little boys.
96
:I'm sure now that they're silly teenagers
and in their early twenties, I can't
97
:really think of anything that they
would like that I could make for them.
98
:But that's not to say that you might
not do something that's great for men.
99
:But for women, there's so many things
and I'm going to sort of branch
100
:into other ideas that might not be
necessarily what you normally do.
101
:Things like baking a batch of
cookies or short breads or fudge
102
:or any type of sweet treat.
103
:There are other foodie type
things like, uh, infused oils
104
:and vinegars jams and preserves.
105
:Having said that, you might have some
male foodies in the family as well.
106
:That you could give to
those kinds of things too.
107
:Homemade body scrubs.
108
:I've made things with coffee and sugar.
109
:Um, I do admit that the sugar actually.
110
:Attracted a lot of ants.
111
:To my bathroom.
112
:So I wouldn't say that that's probably
113
:the best idea.
114
:But coffee and almond oil, I think,
or apricot oil, one of those oils.
115
:Spanx, a lovely body scrub.
116
:Also thinking about your recipient.
117
:You want them to feel like the
gift that you've given them is so
118
:special and it makes them smile
every time they think of it.
119
:This is going to make me sound awful
again, but I know I've been given.
120
:Handmade gifts that.
121
:I appreciate that somebody made it for me.
122
:But it's, it doesn't really
go with my decor or it's not
123
:really something I would wear.
124
:Um, and while I received it very
graciously, now it's in a place where
125
:I just don't know what to do with it.
126
:I don't want to throw it out
because somebody made it for me.
127
:And now I'm in this sort of predicament.
128
:About what to do with something
that doesn't spark joy.
129
:And
130
:I'm very mindful that I
don't want to do that.
131
:To my loved ones.
132
:I want to make sure that if I give them
a gift, that I'm pretty sure that it's
133
:something that they will appreciate.
134
:That goes with their decor.
135
:That is something that they
will actually use or love.
136
:Consumables that great for that.
137
:Going back to , the bodies grubs and the
face scrubs and anything you can eat.
138
:Consumables, uh, or a good idea for people
who you're sorta not sure about their
139
:style or their aesthetic preferences.
140
:Another thing that could be a good idea.
141
:A.
142
:Uh, Christmas tree decorations.
143
:Because the more decorations, the better.
144
:Unless you're giving to
somebody who has a very strict.
145
:Uh, Christmas decor, color scheme.
146
:But generally Christmas tree decorations
can be a lovely thing to create that
147
:people can put up and remember that
you gave it to them at Christmas.
148
:And then it can just be put
away and brought back the
149
:next year and they'll smile.
150
:And remember you every time.
151
:Another good idea could be
Christmas themed accessories, like
152
:a headband that's covered in Holly.
153
:Or some earrings or something
that your recipient could just
154
:wear on the day of Christmas.
155
:And I enjoy wearing it.
156
:And if it's something that they
wouldn't necessarily wear, well, you
157
:know, everybody's going to put on
Christmas earrings at Christmas time.
158
:So that could be a good idea for people
who you're not really sure of their style,
159
:but you want to give them something like
earrings or accessories of some sort.
160
:Going back to consumables.
161
:There's also handmade soaps or.
162
:A hot chocolate spice blend.
163
:One year we did.
164
:A gift that was just nice looking jaws
that had all the dry ingredients of
165
:cookies that were sort of layered up.
166
:So they looked pretty.
167
:And we package that out with a little
wooden spoon and a kid's apron and
168
:the recipe to make these cookies.
169
:And so.
170
:I could send the kids home with
this present, and then later
171
:on, they could bake the cookies
and they were a real hit to.
172
:Kind of going along the consumable
line, but also something that means that
173
:that's an activity that they can do.
174
:I've also done in the past, uh,
origami kits, because then all
175
:you need is some colored paper and
wrap it up with some instructions.
176
:And if you've got a whole lot
of kids in your family, then.
177
:That could be an activity that
they could do on the day together.
178
:Speaking of doing things together.
179
:If you have a bunch of friends who
are also creating gifts for Christmas.
180
:It's a really lovely idea, maybe to get
together for a craft, a noon or something.
181
:Everybody wants to get together to
see each other before Christmas.
182
:And that can just be very difficult to do
when you have so many other things to do.
183
:So you could kill two birds with one
stone by getting some friends together.
184
:Having a couple of drinks.
185
:Layouts and nibblies and yeah.
186
:Do do your little creative
project together and then
187
:you get to spend that time.
188
:And doing creative things
with people is just so fun
189
:because you can share feedback
and advice, and it's just a nice
190
:thing to do with your friends.
191
:So that could potentially be
a tradition that you could
192
:start out with your friends.
193
:Have a friend miss.
194
:Before Christmas on a day, when you
can all get together and celebrate each
195
:other and make gifts at the same time.
196
:Another thing I think is really nice
about handmade gifts is when you
197
:present them in beautiful packaging.
198
:And the packaging could
be handmade as well.
199
:You could just get some butcher paper
and stamp on to them or draw onto them.
200
:And make your own wrapping paper.
201
:Getting some twigs or flowers from
the garden and sticking that into
202
:the ribbon is also a nice thing.
203
:Or eco-friendly recycled.
204
:Bags or scarves or tea towels, or
maybe even you've made your tea towel
205
:or printed something or made a scarf.
206
:It's a lovely way to wrap up a handmade
gift, or maybe you've got a bought gift
207
:and you wrap it in something handmade that
goes along with your gift to that person.
208
:That's a nice idea as well.
209
:You could also make your
own cards, obviously.
210
:I'll give tags.
211
:By just.
212
:Cutting out some paper and sticking
some stickers or stamping or.
213
:Drawing or to stick a rating.
214
:Cards or gift tags in any way.
215
:That's also a lovely, small,
white personalized gifts.
216
:So I have a few recommendations and
apart from starting early, which
217
:I mentioned before, so that you're
doing it in a nice, calm, joyful way.
218
:I would recommend to practice first.
219
:Don't do what I do, which is usually to
come up with an idea and just launch into
220
:it without really trying it out first.
221
:Uh, look a have done that before, and
it hasn't been a complete disaster.
222
:But you want to make sure that when
you give that gift, that you're
223
:really confident that you love it.
224
:It's the best work that you can do.
225
:And you not going to be
embarrassed about it.
226
:Like, I was slightly about a
couple of things just because
227
:I hadn't done it before.
228
:So practicing first is a good idea.
229
:Also use some quality materials,
230
:even if you're giving gifts to save money.
231
:It is important that your gift is going
to last and that it's good quality
232
:and that it's up to your standards and
you want your gift to feel special.
233
:So make sure that you're using
good quality supplies and
234
:materials to create your gifts.
235
:Batch crafting is a good idea.
236
:If you're making multiple gifts,
you could create an assembly line.
237
:And just do the small
components at a time.
238
:And then put them together.
239
:That's also a good thing to do.
240
:For example, if you've only got one
afternoon to get some stuff done, you're
241
:not going to get the whole lot done, get
one component done for all the gifts,
242
:and then you can come back to it later.
243
:The next time you have some time
and get the next component done.
244
:So batching is a really a
good idea, especially when
245
:you're a bit short of time.
246
:And there are a lot more things going
on around Christmas time than usual.
247
:So batching and using the
assembly line is a good idea.
248
:If you're.
249
:Giving multiple people,
one of the same gift.
250
:Or a batch of the same gift, like cookies.
251
:And also creative kits.
252
:I can be a really great present
for somebody in your life who you
253
:think wants to be creative, but
doesn't really know where to start.
254
:You could create a kit with some
materials and some instructions.
255
:So that they can embark on
their own creative thing.
256
:For example, some knitting needles and
some nice wool in a passion might get
257
:them started on some knitting or crochet.
258
:Perhaps a sketchbook
and some lovely pencils.
259
:Under that that's not making it yourself,
260
:but it's definitely
something that you can.
261
:Assemble together and give as a creative
gift and maybe in the future, you can.
262
:Do some craft with your loved one?
263
:So I'm sure that there are many other
creative gift giving ideas that you
264
:could find on YouTube or Pinterest.
265
:Or lots of other blogs.
266
:I'm sure if you Googled anything or
chat, GPT will probably give you ideas.
267
:For what sort of handmade gifts
you could give this Christmas.
268
:But what have you do?
269
:Like I said before, make sure you
give yourself enough time that
270
:you can really enjoy the process.
271
:And.
272
:so you can give that gift with all
the love in your heart and feel proud
273
:of the thing that you've created.
274
:And.
275
:I'm sure that the person
receiving that gift will feel it.
276
:So.
277
:Good luck.
278
:If you are embarking on
some creative gift giving.
279
:And I would love to know what
you're doing reach out to me on
280
:the socials or send me an email.
281
:And I would love to hear from you
about what you're giving for Christmas,
282
:that you're creating yourself.
283
:Also, I do have my studio
sale coming up very soon.
284
:End of November.
285
:make sure that you're on my
mailing list to get first dibs on
286
:these beautiful little creations
that I've been doing this year.
287
:My experiments and samples.
288
:I'm just clearing them all out
because I'm about to move again.
289
:So images will be up.
290
:on my Instagram and Facebook
in the coming weeks.
291
:So look out for those, if.
292
:in fact you would like to give.
293
:A gift that you haven't
made yourself, that I made.
294
:That's also an option.
295
:All these things that 35
Australian dollars each.
296
:So there are pretty well-priced
stocking filler type of a gift.
297
:So check that out in the meantime,
friends keep creative and I'll
298
:see you in the next episode.
299
:I hope you enjoyed this
episode of The Joyful Creative.
300
:If you did, be sure to subscribe

301

303
:Thanks for listening and keep creative.
