Hello everyone. It's Tara, The Odd Witch, and this is the magic of making your bed in the morning. From the time I was a little girl, my mother and always, and I do mean, always had us make our beds. It used to drive me crazy. Similarly, if I dropped my coat and backpack at the front door, after a day at school, she would politely ask me to hang up my coat and put my backpack away until I finally gave in and just started doing it.

Clever woman. Anyhow, back to making my bed. I used to think my mom had me do this because she was raising four children in an army household. Yes, I'm an army brat, and of course, when I was old enough to move out on my own, I rebelled against this habit of making my bed. Why should I make my bed every day just to mess it up every night?

That was always my excuse, but even in my rebellion, I had to admit there was something very satisfying about climbing into a freshly made bed at night. I still rebelled. I can be quite stubborn at times. Fast forward, many years I was now newly sober. Yes, many of you may not know this about me, but at the time of writing this, I have 23 years of sobriety from opioids.

I'm quite proud of this as I should be. My sponsor at the time was quite clever. Remind me to tell you how she taught me about a lesson in Patience. Any who? That's another. Another story for another time. One day she looked at me very serious and said, I want you to make your bed every day for a month. Me?

Why sponsor, just do it and we'll talk about it in 30 days. Me fine, but I don't see, I'm making my bed is gonna help anything but hey, whatever. Oh, did I mention I had a great attitude, sarcasm. It actually annoyed me all day long here. I'd spent so much of my time and effort not making my bed because I was forced to my whole life.

Okay, that is a bit dramatic to think that way. It's not like my mother literally stood over me and forced me to make my bed. She was just trying to teach me a lesson in life. I was just too stubborn to listen. Now, as a grown woman, I have someone again telling me to make my bed. Ugh. Fine. Clearly my life choices at this point hadn't been the best to say the least, so I decided to give it a go.

Next day, I get up like normal, stumble to the kitchen to make some coffee, sit myself at the kitchen table so I can look out the window and appreciate the sunshine. God, it's great to wake up sober and remember the night before without cringing, I think. Then I remember shit, I'm supposed to make my bed. I quickly get up and go to my bedroom.

If I have to do this for 30 days, I wanna get it done and over with. I say out loud. I begin to angrily make my bed. You ever do this? I bet it's a funny sight to anyone that might catch you. Angry bed making. I'm throwing pillows, shaking the sheets as violently as I can. Straightening furiously cussing at my mother and my sponsor for being such tyrants.

After a few minutes of an unnecessary temper tantrum, my bed's made. I Take a step back and look at it. It Does feel better in here I think. I go back to my coffee at the kitchen table. I begin to laugh at the silliness of the temper tantrum that I was throwing. What a waste of my energy. If this crazy woman wants me to make a bed to get off my back, fine.

I'll make a bed.

Not like it's gonna change anything or help me be sober. These were my thoughts at the time.

Over the next 30 days, I made my bed. I got into the routine of making coffee, then making my bed so I could relax and enjoy my morning brew.

But something strange happened.

I actually started looking forward to my morning task.

Sometimes in the afternoon, I would just walk into my bedroom and smile at the tidiness and calmness of it all. It started to be the place I found myself gravitating towards if I needed a moment.

I then started to notice other areas of my home that looked and felt cluttered.

Plus, I noticed I was getting a better night's sleep when it was time to retire for the night.

I felt relaxed, and there's nothing like climbing into crisp sheets and resting your head on a newly fluffed pillow. Ahhhhh!

okay. So I may have missed a few days here and there with my 30 day assignment. But in the end, I had to admit that my environment and surroundings affected my energy levels ability to concentrate an all around feel good factor.

"Dammit!" I thought.

That means my mother and sponsor were right..... again.

Listen, there's a reason we have spring cleaning and decluttering feels so satisfying. The energy you create when you let things pile up or collect do in fact affect you.

Even if you aren't totally aware of it at first, so now I challenge you to make your bed for 30 days and see what happens.

You may just find yourself decluttering your whole house. It feels good to create an energetically calm space.

If you live in a chaotic environment, you will do chaotic things.

If you create a calm space, you will be calm and make better choices because you're making them from a safe, calm energy.

How you do one thing is how you do all things now.

Now Go make your bed.
