Shownotes

Have you ever noticed how often you say, "I just need..."?

  • I just need more money.
  • I just need more time.
  • I need to lose weight before I start dating.
  • I need another qualification before I can go after that job.

We say it all the time without even thinking about it. It just feels natural. Smart, even. And yet...

What if every time you tell yourself you need something before you can move forward, you're actually putting your life on hold?

In this episode, we're unpacking what need really means, why it creates a mindset of scarcity without us even realising it, and the shift that completely changes the way you make decisions - and the results you get.

IN THIS EPISODE

  • The surprising origins of the word "need" and what it may be signalling to your brain every time you say it.
  • How to tell the difference between making decisions from fear and scarcity versus making them from vision.
  • Why waiting until you have "enough" money, confidence, time, or qualifications can become a never-ending cycle.
  • The important distinction between your basic human requirements and the stories you tell yourself about what you need before you can move forward.
  • How inherited beliefs around safety, responsibility, and security influence the choices you make today.
  • How taking one small step can reveal opportunities you couldn't see while you were waiting for certainty.
  • Why changing a single word in your vocabulary could change the way you approach your goals, your decisions, and the life you're trying to create.

Giorgia:

Hello and welcome to another episode, and if you have

2

:

ever said, "I need money, I need

time, I need this resource before

3

:

I can follow my dream, before I can

start dating, before I can start the

4

:

business," this episode is for you.

5

:

Today we are going to find out

what it actually means when we

6

:

say, "I need something" and why

this energy of I need, I need, I

7

:

need sounds so responsible, right?

8

:

because we actually wanna make sure that

we are setting ourself up for success.

9

:

it may not actually be the best energy,

the best way to create results, and we're

10

:

gonna compare what it feels like to make

decisions and pursue your dreams and your

11

:

vision based from need, a place of I need

this to happen, versus this is my vision,

12

:

I'm gonna follow my vision no matter

what, even though it feels a bit reckless.

13

:

So we're gonna unpack a lot this episode.

14

:

I want you to think about this,

the one goal that you're saying,

15

:

"Hmm, I need X before I can do Y."

16

:

What is that for you?

17

:

With that in mind, and with this said,

I'm gonna leave you to the language

18

:

queen to explain to us what does the word

need means, and it's not what you think.

19

:

Dawn: First, I just have to say,

I always get a little like, "Ah,

20

:

she keeps calling me the language

queen," because- … I still find

21

:

difficulty in accepting that crown.

22

:

At the same time, I greatly appreciate

that, my knowledge in language and how I

23

:

do my best to utilize it to support others

as well as myself, I really do appreciate

24

:

it, Giorgia, so I just wanna say that.

25

:

So what I wanna ask you guys

is, have you ever said, "I need

26

:

X before I can do or have Y"?

27

:

For example, I need $100,000

before I can buy my house.

28

:

I need to have this number of

credit cards or this kind of car

29

:

before I can do X, Y, and Z, right?

30

:

So when we speak in these terms, we

are putting a condition on what we

31

:

want, and is that condition really

valid would be my first question.

32

:

And the second is, is it coming from

a place of want, desire, choice,

33

:

or most importantly, your vision?

34

:

So when we say we need something,

we are not just making a choice,

35

:

we are announcing that there is a

shortage, there is scarcity, there is

36

:

something that is completely missing,

and without it, we will suffer So

37

:

I don't know if you guys know this.

38

:

As I'm researching this word and the way

that we use it, because if you don't know,

39

:

I'm writing a book right now called The

Way You Speak Becomes Your World, and

40

:

so there will be a section on this word.

41

:

So as I've been researching this word,

the word need is actually pretty dark.

42

:

I don't know if you guys know this.

43

:

It comes from an ancient root word that

literally means death or exhaustion.

44

:

imagine saying, "I need this," or,

"I need that," and it's just a part

45

:

of your everyday language, and yet

on a subconscious level, you're

46

:

creating exhaustion in your body

that is potentially leading to death.

47

:

So this word was only used

for life or death situations.

48

:

Think of it's freezing cold, or it's

starvation, or it's not having a roof

49

:

over your head, or how do I get away

from this saber-toothed tiger, okay?

50

:

It sets a really hard limit, and

today words like need to or have

51

:

to or I must act as that hard wall.

52

:

So saying I want a coffee leaves us room

to change our minds, yet saying I need a

53

:

coffee, for example, and I'm sure some of

you can resonate with this, where people

54

:

are like, "Oh my gosh, I need my coffee.

55

:

I'm just not awake until I have my

coffee," you are telling your brain

56

:

that without that cup of coffee,

if it stays empty, there is danger.

57

:

And maybe you don't

necessarily mean for yourself.

58

:

Maybe you mean it for the people around

you because we know some people are

59

:

like, "If I haven't had my coffee yet,

rawr," out comes the tiger, right?

60

:

So we get to understand that need comes

from safety, it comes from wanting

61

:

certainty, and it also comes from the

illusion of control, which if we really

62

:

dig deep down, we understand that we

literally cannot control anything at all.

63

:

So Giorgia, I'm gonna

swing this back to you.

64

:

Can you move into how we shift from

this need into coming from vision?

65

:

Giorgia: Absolutely.

66

:

And you can feel how this literally

feels in your body when you say, "I

67

:

need X before I can take action."

68

:

It feels defeating, it feels powerless-

Heavy … feels like, ugh, heavy.

69

:

when you are in your vision, your

thinking terms, "Oh my God, I am

70

:

so excited to start my business.

71

:

I'm so excited to start dating and

find my partner," whatever that is

72

:

for you, in your body just feels

light, it feels expansive, it feels

73

:

exciting, and that's the place where

we want to be because whatever your

74

:

vision is, that is your vision, and

it looks different for everyone else.

75

:

Even if you…

76

:

wanna meet the love of your life,

or you wanna do a certain job, I can

77

:

guarantee you that what you actually

want in the love of your life, in

78

:

your relationship, in your career,

it's different from every person.

79

:

Everyone has slightly different

desires and requirements, and so you

80

:

get to trust that whatever the vision

is, it's the right vision for you.

81

:

And if you have that vision, if you

have the desire, and the desire is

82

:

meant for you, then you can happen.

83

:

You can become the person, you can

create what you think you need right now,

84

:

because right now, like, right now I'm

like, Oh, God, I cannot until I have…"

85

:

. it's like you can create that.

86

:

If that is your vision, you

can most definitely create

87

:

that, and I know this is…

88

:

Can I say a mind fuck on this podcast?

89

:

Because I'm sure for all of us,

we've been conditioned with you

90

:

need to do things in a certain way.

91

:

You need to be responsible.

92

:

You need to make sure that you have…

93

:

Especially for us Italians, we

don't buy anything on credit.

94

:

Maybe a house or a car.

95

:

Anything else, you don't buy it on credit.

96

:

You don't buy in installments.

97

:

if you don't have that money in the bank,

it's completely irresponsible to put

98

:

it on credit or have a payment plan Or

if you want a career that's completely

99

:

irresponsible, to start a business, if

you don't have one or two degrees in

100

:

the area you want to start a business

in, or you want to get a job, we need

101

:

to make sure that everything, check all

the boxes of what society tells you.

102

:

And then there's this

thing that's your vision.

103

:

Your vision is like, "I

don't care about any of that.

104

:

I don't care about if it's irresponsible.

105

:

I don't care if you don't have the

money right now, or you don't feel

106

:

good enough" or whatever it is.

107

:

, I just want you to take action,

take steps, and that's why I'm

108

:

saying it really messes with your

head because it's a completely

109

:

different way of thinking about this.

110

:

And I have examples in my life that I

want to share with you, first, do you

111

:

have anything to add to this, Dawn?

112

:

Dawn: So the only thing I do want to add

is that we're not taking away from…

113

:

Many of you have probably heard

of Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

114

:

Maslow's hierarchy of needs is

a psychological theory, and it

115

:

explains what motivates us, and

it's based on five levels of human

116

:

needs: physiological, safety, love,

esteem, and self-acual actualization.

117

:

Let's get that word out there.

118

:

And so we're not saying that you

don't, quote, unquote, "need to have

119

:

food and sleep and water to survive."

120

:

We are saying that it's really

empowering to change that word I

121

:

need to I choose, I want, I desire.

122

:

This is in line with my vision.

123

:

Okay?

124

:

Because as a nutritionist, I know

that there are certain nutrients

125

:

that my body requires, not needs,

requires to function optimally.

126

:

When I change it from it's a requirement

to it's a need, then I can say, "Okay,

127

:

what kind of foods am I going to eat

to meet those requirements so I have

128

:

an optimally healthy body that allows

me to have a long-lasting life and good

129

:

function and good quality of life?"

130

:

So it isn't just about I'm

gonna be 125 when I die.

131

:

It's also gonna be I'm having an

amazing quality of life at 125, and

132

:

then I just go to sleep and die,

because that's my vision for me.

133

:

And so knowing that my body has

requirements that are going to

134

:

support that vision, I get to

create that scenario for it.

135

:

So I just wanna say we're not

negating Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

136

:

We're saying let's shift the way that

we are wording around these needs so we

137

:

understand that they are still choices.

138

:

Because there are people in the

world who have anorexia, who have

139

:

bulimia, who suffer from, not liking

people touching them, including their

140

:

own family, yet these are said to be

important for survival: food, water.

141

:

you know, if somebody is bulimic

and they- are going through the

142

:

process of what bulimia is, they

can rupture their esophagus and

143

:

die, and most of them know this.

144

:

So even though it is based off of

a psychological theory that this is

145

:

necessary, we can change it to, "This

is my choice because this is what I

146

:

want to create," instead of, "Ugh, I

need to have this because if I don't

147

:

have this, then X happens," right?

148

:

And so that was where we were also

saying is, "I need to do X, so I

149

:

have Y or so I can do Y," okay?

150

:

So, I just wanted to throw

that in there, Giorgia.

151

:

Giorgia: That's a very important point.

152

:

As we were talking about

Maslow theory, I was…

153

:

I connected that to what you said about

the dark roots of need because we know

154

:

that for most of history most people did

not have the absolute basic necessities

155

:

of food, water, proper shelter.

156

:

So of course we have developed

this mindset of I need before I

157

:

can do X, Y, and Z because in the

past if you really don't have those

158

:

resources, you would have died.

159

:

And of course, as a human, your body,

your brain prioritizes making sure

160

:

that those basic necessities are there

before you can think of anything else.

161

:

At the same time, even in the Middle

Ages there have been some outliers,

162

:

like right now there are some

outliers that can be homeless or in

163

:

very bad places and start rebuilding

their life again, and it is very…

164

:

This is the exception.

165

:

These are the unicorns.

166

:

I don't wanna say that

everyone can do this.

167

:

These are unicorns, and they are unicorns

because Even when you are comfortable,

168

:

it's really hard to change your mindset

from I need to I choose, I can make a

169

:

different choice, I can pursue my vision.

170

:

When you are in a state of scarcity,

it's extremely, extremely challenging.

171

:

You have a lot more, much, much more

pressure on you to actually fulfill

172

:

your basic needs and only that.

173

:

So we are acknowledging all of these

realities, and most of you listening

174

:

to this podcast, you are past the point

of, like, your necessities are met.

175

:

What is really a necessity has been met.

176

:

And yet because we come from this

mentality where through wars and famines

177

:

and scarcity, We have inherited that

way of thinking, which is why even right

178

:

now when we have the resources, or we

can create the resources, 'cause we live

179

:

in an era where it's been easier than

ever to actually create the resources,

180

:

we still think, "Oh, I can't do that,"

or, "I need to do X before I can do Y."

181

:

And we wanna break that and show you

a different way because when I started

182

:

practicing making a different choice

and shifting from need to vision, I

183

:

thought that I was being reckless.

184

:

I am so grateful that I've had

supportive coaches throughout

185

:

the years because I don't think

I could have done it by myself.

186

:

Dawn: Mm.

187

:

Giorgia: I remember the, first time

that I did this was when I moved to

188

:

London, and I didn't have a place…

189

:

I mean, I had a place to stay for

two or three days, no more than that,

190

:

and then I didn't have lots of money

in the bank, I didn't have a job.

191

:

So I just trusted that I had to be

here, and I just started sending

192

:

CVs and cold emails to people.

193

:

And after a while, I did find clients,

and I was able to support myself

194

:

because that was very clear to me.

195

:

Everyone was saying to me, "Giorgia, when

you go to London, you need to have a job.

196

:

You need to be responsible and

be able to pay your bills."

197

:

And I was like, "Nope, I'm gonna live

with my savings until I find clients."

198

:

And three months went by without

clients, and I was really freaking out.

199

:

I was like, "Okay, now

my savings are very low.

200

:

I need a job."

201

:

And after three months, I got a client,

and I was able to stay in London.

202

:

And then again, when my visions

started changing, I was like,

203

:

"Oh, okay, I have these clients.

204

:

I don't like the work that I'm doing.

205

:

They are too demanding, and

I want to do something else."

206

:

And I didn't feel like I could and

because, again, I need the income

207

:

that comes from those clients.

208

:

I've had someone that I connected

through the internet mentioning this

209

:

online course, and I was like, "Oh my

God, Oh my God, so how can I do this

210

:

course when it's as much as my rent?

211

:

That's irresponsible.

212

:

And I did it anyway, and I was

able to generate more money than

213

:

I was making with my clients so

that I could ditch the clients.

214

:

so these are just examples of

when your vision is right the

215

:

opportunity is always around you.

216

:

Right now there are opportunities around

to create the money, find the partner,

217

:

whatever you want, you are not seeing

them because you think, "I need to be

218

:

responsible, and This cannot happen unless

I have all these other things in place."

219

:

And then of course, over the

years, it became, as I started

220

:

doing more coaching, as I've been

practicing more, it became easier.

221

:

for example, one thing that I wanted

to do for a long time was build my

222

:

personal brand, and I was always

saying, "Well, I'm not making any

223

:

money from building a personal brand.

224

:

I need to have clients," right?

225

:

And so I was putting it off and

putting it off and putting it off.

226

:

And the moment I made a decision to

have my personal brand, even if I had

227

:

no idea how I was gonna support myself

financially while I was doing that, the

228

:

money came in from an unexpected source,

and that's the way the universe works.

229

:

The universe works with, you

follow your vision, you make the

230

:

decision, that you take the first

step, and the second one appears.

231

:

And because there is no…

232

:

Like, if you follow the path

from society, you kinda know

233

:

what the next step is, right?

234

:

With the universe, you just don't know.

235

:

You just get to trust that

the step is gonna be there.

236

:

in our own our experience with our lives,

with our clients, it always happens.

237

:

And because we don't know it in advance,

it freaks us out so much, right?

238

:

Dawn: Yeah, absolutely, Giorgia.

239

:

And I think your example that

you gave of everyone saying to

240

:

you, "You have to have a job.

241

:

You have to have a job.

242

:

How are you gonna move to London and

you have nothing except your savings?"

243

:

And you're like, "My savings is enough.

244

:

I'll figure it out.

245

:

I'll figure out how to create it."

246

:

And I think that's where a lot of us

think or a lot of us don't understand

247

:

that when we're coming from need,

we're coming from fear, we're coming

248

:

from lack, we're coming from scarcity.

249

:

How many times, without praying to God,

okay, for those of you who believe in

250

:

God, or without really stepping into

it's not just a need, it's a this is

251

:

going to propel whatever situation

I'm in life forward, when you say,

252

:

"Man, I really need this money"?

253

:

And yet the money doesn't come.

254

:

And you continue to repeat the same

thing coming from that place of need.

255

:

And then when you surrender and you

come from a place of saying, "Yes,

256

:

I need this, and I'm surrendered

to whatever happens, happens.

257

:

And I'm choosing to know

that it's going to arrive.

258

:

I'm choosing to feel safe.

259

:

I'm choosing that this is going

to happen no matter what."

260

:

Whether it's a financial thing,

a job thing, a car, whatever

261

:

the situation happens to be.

262

:

The more that we come from

that place of need, the more

263

:

we feel like we're chasing it.

264

:

Now, when we take a step back

and we go into our vision,

265

:

let's say you need $258.92

266

:

so you can keep your electricity

on for the month, right?

267

:

And you're like, "I have no idea

where this is gonna come from."

268

:

And you shift from I need

this to it's going to come.

269

:

Whatever way, it's going to come.

270

:

I have no idea.

271

:

It will arrive.

272

:

And then you get this bonus

check for exactly $258.92.

273

:

Where did it come from?

274

:

It came from your surrender.

275

:

It came from you being in vision that

you get to have your electricity on.

276

:

Instead of coming from What am

I gonna do without electricity?"

277

:

When we're in our vision, we're coming

from passion and we're coming from power.

278

:

We're not just empowering ourselves though

when we are in vision and not coming from

279

:

that place of lack, we're also being the

example to the people around us to step

280

:

into our power, into their power, to step

into I don't, quote-unquote, "need" to

281

:

come from a place of scarcity I can choose

to come from a place of abundance even

282

:

though I'm not sure where those results

are gonna come from, it's gonna happen.

283

:

And I think that's one thing that,

Giorgia, you explained really

284

:

beautifully with your situation, with

your example, was that you had no idea

285

:

where the clients were gonna come from,

if you were even gonna get a client.

286

:

You just knew that you were meant

to live in London, and that opened

287

:

that door to saying, "Okay, I'm open

to receiving, and I surrender to

288

:

the situation, and they will come."

289

:

Kind of like the movie Field of

Dreams, build it and they will come.

290

:

Giorgia: Yes.

291

:

And I wanna make it is…

292

:

'cause I agree with everything you

said, I wanna make this practical when

293

:

we say what surrender means because I

can imagine people out there are like,

294

:

"Yeah, okay, that worked for you.

295

:

How can I know that it will work for

me, that if I surrender the money

296

:

will come and everything will come?"

297

:

And you know the saying that if you do the

298

:

same thing over and over and over

again, you get the same result.

299

:

So if you are in this pattern of say,

"I need X" and X never comes, well, it's

300

:

because you are not doing the things

that will make the money come, right?

301

:

Let's say in this case the X is money.

302

:

If you say, " I need this amount of

money" and every month you do certain

303

:

actions, and every month the money

doesn't come, you are not doing the

304

:

actions that allow the money to come,

otherwise you would have the money.

305

:

And so surrendering can simply mean,

"Okay, the way that I have been

306

:

doing things up until now isn't

working" What else is possible?

307

:

Because if you listen, I didn't just come

to London and said, "Okay, here I am.

308

:

Clients, find me.

309

:

I'm sitting at home on my bed.

310

:

Please knock on my door."

311

:

I was sending out the email,

and when I was tired of the

312

:

clients, I did listen to my…

313

:

to she wasn't even a friend, she was

just someone that I was talking to on

314

:

the internet mentioning this course.

315

:

So I was taking actions that in the moment

felt completely unrelated, maybe even

316

:

crazy, definitely not responsible, because

I surrender to it doesn't need to…

317

:

again, doesn't need, it

doesn't need to look my way.

318

:

There is a way.

319

:

And when you surrender your way,

then it's like you lift a…

320

:

like changing the glasses you're wearing,

and all of a sudden other opportunities

321

:

that up until then that had seemed

crazy, it seemed unrealistic, it seemed

322

:

impossible, now they seem possible.

323

:

Dawn: Absolutely.

324

:

I was thinking of it's

like lifting the veil.

325

:

your eyes are wide open at that

point, and you're able to see things

326

:

clearly from a different perspective.

327

:

And sometimes we can start to

see that different perspective

328

:

through someone else's eyes.

329

:

I know for the longest time

for me just in life in general,

330

:

everything was black or white.

331

:

There was two options.

332

:

There was no other in between, and

I have learned through doing the

333

:

same training that Giorgia did, the

leadership training- That there is

334

:

a very, very, very large gray area.

335

:

And there is so much

possibility in that gray area.

336

:

And if you think you only have

two options, talk to five people,

337

:

and don't even tell them what

you think your options are.

338

:

Let them tell you what they think, because

you're gonna have five other answers.

339

:

Look at it from the perspective of

there's a car accident, and you have

340

:

five people who have witnessed the car

accident, and you have five different

341

:

points of view for that car accident.

342

:

It would be the same in how do you get

to shift from coming from a place of

343

:

need to a place of I'm in my vision,

because how can you learn to surrender

344

:

and somebody is giving you different ideas

because you don't know what works for you.

345

:

And then the aha moment happens

exactly when it gets to happen.

346

:

And if you notice, I didn't say when it

needs to happen, when it should happen.

347

:

It's when the universe, God,

Source says, "This is the moment.

348

:

I'm opening your eyes.

349

:

I'm lifting that veil, and you are

marching forward from this point."

350

:

When we step into choosing to

grow and to transform, it requires

351

:

that you take a risk, or many.

352

:

And it's also that you trust.

353

:

Trust yourself, trust your intuition,

and trust that God, Source, the universe

354

:

is going to meet you halfway or even a

little bit further along the way in terms

355

:

of, like, they're really supporting you.

356

:

I truly believe that

God answers my prayers.

357

:

He may not answer them in the way

that I see I want them to be answered,

358

:

'cause there are times in life

where you don't see what He sees.

359

:

So I'm speaking of this from my

perspective, and some of you that are

360

:

listening, you may not believe in God.

361

:

And that's okay.

362

:

You have your way of having

your eyes opened, of having your

363

:

prayers or your desires answered.

364

:

I believe mine come from God.

365

:

And so when we surrender that, as

Giorgia already explained, in the

366

:

right timing, those prayers, those

desires, the thing that you are moving

367

:

toward in your vision will be answered

368

:

Giorgia: I don't know if you have

this saying in the English language.

369

:

In Italy we say, "Help yourself

and God will help you."

370

:

And that's another way, if you don't

believe in God, to say the universe

371

:

will meet you halfway, because

it's by taking that first step-

372

:

Dawn: Mm

373

:

… Giorgia: the next one will appear.

374

:

If you just pray, pray, pray to

the universe to do whatever, and

375

:

you never take any action- Yeah

376

:

it's not gonna come

377

:

in.

378

:

Dawn: Yeah.

379

:

Giorgia: I

380

:

wish

381

:

that I could wake up one morning and

then $10 million in my bank account.

382

:

I don't think that's going to happen

just like that just by praying.

383

:

It's by taking that first step, then

the universe, life, God, whatever

384

:

you wanna say, it's like, "Okay,

here's second one, and here the

385

:

third one, and here the fourth one."

386

:

And our job is just to follow that.

387

:

And when we are on vision, it

becomes a no-brainer to follow that.

388

:

Absolutely.

389

:

Dawn: We do have that phrase

in, English as well, and it's…

390

:

I remember my step-mom telling me as

I was growing up, if you keep praying

391

:

and you take no action towards whatever

it is that you're praying for, God

392

:

isn't going to answer those prayers.

393

:

He wants to see that you're truly invested

in whatever it is that you're praying for.

394

:

You also get to take steps to meet

him, because he's not just going to

395

:

hand you things on a silver platter.

396

:

So I fully agree, Giorgia, and again, as

I said, we have this phrase in English

397

:

that we also get to take steps towards

creating our vision and get the support,

398

:

God, source, universe, friends, family.

399

:

I truly believe that the people will be

brought into our lives that are meant to

400

:

support us on our vision or to understand

why we have derailed from the vision.

401

:

Giorgia: Yes.

402

:

And just to go full circle to this

conversation, like when I said your

403

:

vision is meant for you, so trust.

404

:

Whether it comes from God, the universe,

your inner knowing, whatever you believe

405

:

in, trust that it is meant for you.

406

:

And when you take that step, that

sounds like a risk now, though the

407

:

biggest risk is not taking the action

at all, the next step will come.

408

:

And because then you see the results,

you say, "Oh my God, I've achieved this.

409

:

Look, I got the clients.

410

:

Look, I replaced my income," the

confidence that will come from that will

411

:

make taking the second step and the third

step and the fourth step so much easier.

412

:

And if this is like, "Oh, I love what

I'm hearing, I just don't know how to

413

:

make it happen, and I'm still a bit

hesitant," 'cause again, it's complete

414

:

mindset shift, then get in touch.

415

:

We're gonna leave the

links in the show notes.

416

:

Get in touch because we'll be

launching a new coaching program where

417

shift so you can create your vision
