In this episode, I celebrate two beginnings at once: another school year and episode 300 of the Be a Funky Teacher podcast. When I recorded my first episode, I never imagined reaching this milestone, and I’m proud of what those 300 episodes represent—300 opportunities to encourage educators and talk about a profession I truly love.
I reflect on how the podcast has evolved from individual episodes built around whatever was on my heart into deeper conversations and connected series. Those conversations have also become the foundation for future books, including Be a Funky Teacher and Teaching in an Age of AI, while reminding me that the podcast itself will always come first.
I also look ahead to the next major weekday series, which will focus on the challenges facing teachers and why I believe teachers are not broken—they are carrying tremendous weight. Saturday Stories and Sunday School for Teachers will continue, and I’m also working to make classroom resources more consistently available while exploring a possible Be a Funky Teacher YouTube show.
As I begin my 24th year in education, I’m excited about another group of students and another opportunity to grow. Episode 300 isn’t a finish line. It’s the beginning of a new chapter, and my challenge for educators is not only to think about what students should learn this year, but also who we want to become as educators.
This is Mr. Funky Teacher with BeaFunkyTeacher.com. I'm coming to you with another Be a Funky Teacher podcast.
Today's episode is called A New School Year, A New Chapter.
Welcome back, everyone.
Today's episode is a little different.
Not only are we beginning another school year together, but today we're also celebrating a milestone that I'm incredibly proud of.
This is episode 300 of the Be a Funky Teacher podcast.
Three hundred episodes.
Honestly, when I recorded that very first episode, I never imagined I'd one day be sitting here recording episode 300.
And I have to tell you, I'm proud of that.
Not because of the number itself, but because those episodes represent 300 opportunities to encourage educators.
Three hundred conversations about a profession that I truly love.
Three hundred chances to remind teachers that what they do matters.
When I first started this podcast, I didn't have everything planned out.
Most mornings, I simply asked myself, "What do I want to talk about today?"
I'd make some rough notes, hit record, and share whatever was on my heart.
Those early episodes were genuine.
They were honest.
But over time, something began to change.
Instead of simply talking about teaching, I began digging deeper into teaching ideas.
One episode led naturally into another.
Themes began to emerge.
I realized some conversations deserved more than one episode.
They deserved an entire series.
Looking back, that's probably what has surprised me the most.
I've learned how much I truly love talking about education.
I've learned how much I enjoy sharing stories from my own classroom.
I've learned that when we slow down and really think deeply about teaching, we often discover ideas that can genuinely help one another become better educators.
I think this podcast has grown because of that.
I've grown because of that.
So today isn't simply about celebrating episode 300.
It's about celebrating growth.
It's about celebrating a community of educators who continue showing up every day because they believe students matter.
And it's about looking ahead to another school year filled with new opportunities to inspire greatness in young people.
Well, before we get into it, let's ground ourselves in gratitude.
Here are three things that I'm thankful for.
The first thing that I'm thankful for is a fresh start.
One of my favorite things about education is that every August, we're given another beginning.
New students.
New opportunities.
New relationships.
Every school year reminds me that hope is built into this profession.
And I'm incredibly thankful for that.
The second thing that I'm thankful for is time with my family this summer.
This summer gave me the chance to make memories.
To laugh together.
To travel together.
To simply enjoy being together.
Those moments remind me what matters most.
And they help me refill my cup before another busy school year begins.
And the third thing that I'm thankful for is every person who has listened to this podcast.
Whether you've listened to all 300 episodes or whether today is your very first time listening, thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I'm grateful that you've invited me into your commute, your classroom, your walk, or your day.
I don't take that privilege lightly.
And I'm thankful that we're on this journey together.
So the topic, once again, is A New School Year, A New Chapter.
As I've been preparing my classroom for another school year, I've also spent some time looking back over these past 300 episodes.
I've noticed something.
There have been seasons where we've really gone deep into important conversations.
We've talked about what it truly means to be a funky teacher.
We've explored teaching in the age of artificial intelligence and how technology is changing education.
As I reflected on the episodes I've shared, I realized something I hadn't fully appreciated before.
The podcast comes first.
And it always will.
These conversations are where ideas are born.
They're where stories are shared.
They're where we learn together.
But I've also realized that some of those conversations deserve to continue beyond a single podcast episode.
That's why I've been spending time organizing some of those ideas, transcripts, and information into future books that haven't come out yet.
Not because I originally set out to write books, but because meaningful conversations naturally continue growing.
Now those episodes are becoming the foundation for some future books.
And we're about to begin another one of those conversations.
Over the next several weeks, we're going to explore something that has been heavy on my heart.
The teaching profession is hurting.
We're losing incredible educators.
Teachers are carrying more than ever before.
And I believe it's one of the most important conversations we can have.
Because I don't believe teachers are broken.
I believe they're carrying incredible weight.
Together, I think we can talk honestly about those challenges while also talking about hope.
That's where we're headed.
And I hope you'll come along.
Let's celebrate the milestones.
Sometimes we move so quickly from one thing to the next that we forget to celebrate how far we've come.
Three hundred episodes is worth celebrating.
Not because it makes me special.
But because consistency matters.
Showing up matters.
Whether it's teaching students or recording a podcast, meaningful work is often built one day at a time.
Growth happens through reflection.
One of the greatest gifts this podcast has given me is the opportunity to reflect.
Teaching moves fast.
Reflection slows us down just enough to learn from our experiences.
I think that's one reason I've grown as an educator over this past year, especially while doing this podcast.
Great teaching is still about relationships.
Technology changes.
Curriculum changes.
Standards change.
But relationships remain at the center of everything we do.
Students remember how we made them feel long before they remember many of the lessons we taught.
That's still where our greatest influence lives.
Every school year is another opportunity.
One of the beautiful things about education is that every August offers us a new beginning.
We don't get to rewrite last year.
But we do get another chance to make a difference this year.
That's a gift.
And we're going to continue growing.
This is year 24 of teaching for me, and I still don't have everything figured out.
Honestly, I hope I never think that I do.
The best educators I know continue learning.
They stay curious.
They ask questions.
They keep growing.
The podcast has grown with purpose.
There really has been purpose behind these 300 episodes.
When I first started recording, I simply shared what was on my heart.
Now I find myself building conversations that connect together.
That's been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.
Purpose brings clarity.
As this podcast has evolved, I've realized some conversations deserve to go deeper.
Looking back over these 300 episodes, there were themes that kept returning because they mattered.
Being a Funky Teacher.
Teaching in the Age of AI.
And now this next conversation about supporting teachers.
Some topics deserve more than one episode.
They deserve our attention.
Our profession needs hope, y'all.
We're in a profession that needs hope.
It's easy to focus only on what's wrong in education.
There are real challenges.
We shouldn't ignore those challenges.
But we also shouldn't lose hope.
Hope keeps great teachers moving forward.
And students remain our why.
As excited as I am about another podcast season, I'm even more excited about another group of students.
They're why we do this.
Every lesson.
Every relationship.
Every conversation.
It all comes back to helping young people become the very best versions of themselves.
I'm not trying to sound cliché when I say we need to focus on our why.
There are real issues making it difficult for many educators to stay in this profession.
But we still can't lose focus on why the work matters.
We're here for students.
We're not here for the paycheck.
We're not here for some weeks off during the summer.
We're here for students.
And the best is still ahead, y'all.
Episode 300 isn't the finish line.
It's the beginning of another chapter.
I'm excited about where this podcast is going.
I'm excited about another school year.
And I'm excited to continue walking alongside educators who believe this profession still changes lives.
As I look ahead to this school year, I feel hopeful.
I feel excited.
I feel more convinced than ever that teachers matter.
Over the next several weeks, we're going to have some honest conversations.
Some challenging conversations.
But I hope every single episode leaves you feeling encouraged.
Because that's always been the heart behind Be a Funky Teacher.
The weekday episodes will continue as we begin this new focus series.
Together, we'll take a deep look at the challenges facing education today.
But we'll also talk about hope.
Practical ideas.
And why I believe our profession is still worth fighting for.
Saturday Stories will continue as well.
Those have become one of my favorite parts of the podcast because stories have a unique way of teaching lessons that stay with us long after we've heard them.
One area I know I can improve is making the companion resources easier for you to find and use on my website.
That's something I've fallen short on.
And that's something I'm committed to getting sorted out and improving this year so those materials are more consistently available for teachers who want to bring those stories into their own classrooms.
Sunday School for Teachers will also continue.
My faith has been an important part of my life and my teaching journey.
I hope those episodes continue encouraging educators who want to connect their faith with the calling of teaching.
I'm also exploring something new.
I've been thinking about launching a Be a Funky Teacher YouTube show.
It's still in the early stages.
I don't have everything figured out yet, and I'm not ready to make any big announcement at this exact moment.
But it's something I'm excited about exploring.
The idea would be a little different from the podcast.
Instead of having carefully scripted ideas and lots of notes like I often do for the podcast, it would be more like sitting down together and having a conversation.
I could take a question or a topic that's impacting education and simply think it through with you in real time.
It would be a chance to share ideas, reflect together, and have more conversational discussions about issues facing teachers today.
It would have a little bit different feel because it would be on YouTube.
I'd be on video.
Maybe it becomes a weekly thing.
Maybe a monthly thing.
I don't have all of that figured out yet.
I've just been exploring it as a possibility.
I'll share more as those plans come together.
For now, I'm simply grateful.
I'm grateful for 300 episodes.
Grateful for another school year.
Grateful that after 24 years in education, I still believe this profession changes lives.
And I'm grateful that we get to continue this journey together.
So here's my challenge for you.
As you begin this new school year, don't just think about what you want your students to learn.
Think about who you want to become as an educator this year.
Keep growing.
Keep believing.
Keep inspiring.
And never forget that what you do matters.
That's right.
I can't wait to begin this new chapter with you.
We'll kick off our new series in the next episode, and I hope you'll join me for what I believe will be one of the most meaningful conversations we've had together.

And don't forget to be a funky teacher.
Bye now.
