Shownotes

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Margaret Stuart, Director – Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at Nestle, about the company’s sustainable packaging goals, successful initiatives, and its drive towards the 2025 National Packaging Targets.

Margaret starts the conversation looking at the challenge of creating sustainable Easter egg packaging that ensures the egg makes it safely to the consumer, looks attractive on shelf, and carries clear instructions for recycling – even more important over Easter when research Australian consumers consider recycling. This leads to a discussion on the importance of consumer education and the value of the Australasian Recycling Label to deliver consistent messaging on recycling.

Following this we explore Nestle’s other sustainable packaging initiatives, including the KitKat recycled wrapper project (hear more on Episode 20 of The PKN Podcast), reducing the use of virgin plastic and redesigning packaging to remove small ‘break off’ pieces which are unrecyclable. The discussion then moves onto achieving plastic circularity through advanced and mechanical recycling by collecting and finding other uses for used plastic packaging from consumers.

We wrap up by exploring the multifaceted complexity of corporate social responsibility for major brand owners like Nestle, considering the environment, farming communities, supply chains, social implications, consumer behaviours, nutritional impacts, and production emissions, many of which are interconnected.
