Sadaf Beynon:

Welcome to Podjunction, where business meets podcasting.

Sadaf Beynon:

Whether you're on a morning jog, driving to work, whipping up a meal,

Sadaf Beynon:

or just simply taking a minute for yourself, our weekly bite sized episodes

Sadaf Beynon:

promise fresh insights from successful podcasters who have cracked the code of

Sadaf Beynon:

using podcasts to grow their business.

Sadaf Beynon:

So whether you're a podcasting newbie or a seasoned podcaster,

Sadaf Beynon:

this episode is for you.

Matt Edmundson:

Wow, hello, welcome to Podjunction episode 20.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, we're on episode 20.

Matt Edmundson:

I think we need a round of applause for that.

Sadaf Beynon:

Don't you have any?

Matt Edmundson:

I think I'm cool.

Matt Edmundson:

So not quite sure that's what I'm after.

Matt Edmundson:

But yeah, welcome to episode 20 of the podcast podjunction.

Matt Edmundson:

It's great to be with you.

Matt Edmundson:

My name is Matt beside me is still COVID up.

Matt Edmundson:

Sadaf Beynon, still snot tastic, aren't you?

Matt Edmundson:

So it's great that you could join us.

Matt Edmundson:

Fortunately, you can't catch COVID or the flu down a microphone.

Matt Edmundson:

So great.

Sadaf Beynon:

Fortunate for them.

Matt Edmundson:

Fortunate for them.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, absolutely.

Matt Edmundson:

And so yeah, we just talked about how to use podcasting to grow your business.

Matt Edmundson:

in a slightly fun, hopefully educational way.

Matt Edmundson:

It normally involves us chatting about something.

Matt Edmundson:

And so yeah, warm welcome to you, especially if this

Matt Edmundson:

is your first time with us.

Matt Edmundson:

Why did I make such a big deal of episode 20?

Sadaf Beynon:

Because that is a huge milestone in the podcaster's journey.

Matt Edmundson:

It is a huge milestone in any podcaster's journey.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, I think it's like something like 95 percent of people don't get past episode

Matt Edmundson:

five and then 95 percent of the people that remain in don't get past episode 20.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

So by getting Or make

Sadaf Beynon:

it to 20.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

So maybe we should celebrate episode 21

Sadaf Beynon:

No, this is good.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

I like celebrating.

Matt Edmundson:

Absolutely.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah, the consistency in podcasting is always part of the plan, isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

It's always part of the key.

Matt Edmundson:

And yeah, if you make it to episode 20, celebrate, do something big on

Matt Edmundson:

episode 20, because a lot of people have fallen out by this point.

Matt Edmundson:

And yeah, we do celebrate, we celebrate episode 20 and we celebrate episode

Matt Edmundson:

100, just because it's a hundred.

Matt Edmundson:

And then do we, I don't know if we said maybe 500 after that would be the next.

Sadaf Beynon:

Next one feels a bit far away.

Matt Edmundson:

Maybe 250.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't know.

Matt Edmundson:

We'll figure something out.

Matt Edmundson:

But we've got a little bit of a ways to go yet.

Matt Edmundson:

But now we're on Episode 20.

Matt Edmundson:

So very warm welcome to you.

Matt Edmundson:

And yeah, what we've got going on this day's show,

Sadaf Beynon:

we've got Lee Houghton again.

Sadaf Beynon:

And he is talking about the benefits that he's experienced from having

Sadaf Beynon:

Been on this podcasting journey,

Matt Edmundson:

just the benefits he's experienced having been on this podcast.

Sadaf Beynon:

Sorry.

Sadaf Beynon:

Doing his podcast,

Matt Edmundson:

I thought you were going to say being on this podcast.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah, that too.

Matt Edmundson:

His business has taken off because this is his second

Matt Edmundson:

week on our MAHUSSIVE podcast.

Matt Edmundson:

And so yes, we appreciate that Lee it's just killing it right now.

Matt Edmundson:

And I'm still on the slow train.

Matt Edmundson:

Thank you.

Matt Edmundson:

You might have to explain that if people didn't hear last week's show.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

COVID and all, and just recovering from that.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

COVID just, we were talking last week in last week's episode about this

Matt Edmundson:

because COVID is not a thing anymore.

Matt Edmundson:

We talk about COVID now and joke about it, but it's not a thing really.

Matt Edmundson:

Is it?

Matt Edmundson:

It's just a thing.

Matt Edmundson:

I've got a cold now, no one cares, but someone made you take a test.

Matt Edmundson:

That's how you found out you got COVID.

Matt Edmundson:

That is true.

Matt Edmundson:

Yes.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

And then they, you just disappeared for a few days and this is your

Matt Edmundson:

first day emerging from your cave.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

I've still done a school run or two.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

Dump and drive kind of thing.

Matt Edmundson:

From my COVID infected kids at the school that was fun.

Matt Edmundson:

So it's good to have you.

Matt Edmundson:

It's good to see you looking well.

Sadaf Beynon:

Oh, thank you.

Matt Edmundson:

Cause you didn't sound well when we spoke on the phone.

Matt Edmundson:

You spent most of your time talking to a tissue, I think,

Matt Edmundson:

when we spoke on the phone.

Matt Edmundson:

Yes.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Fair play.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't need to paint anybody's more imagination.

Matt Edmundson:

No, but a very warm welcome to you.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah, we've got Lee.

Matt Edmundson:

We're going to carry on.

Matt Edmundson:

What were we talking about this week?

Matt Edmundson:

Did you say sorry?

Sadaf Beynon:

Benefits that he's experienced from podcasting.

Matt Edmundson:

Okay.

Matt Edmundson:

Love these kind of conversations.

Matt Edmundson:

And yeah, if you didn't catch last week's do check it out.

Matt Edmundson:

It is on your favorite podcast app.

Matt Edmundson:

Lee is the best.

Matt Edmundson:

A legend.

Matt Edmundson:

And last week we talked about asking great questions and having

Matt Edmundson:

interesting conversations with people.

Sadaf Beynon:

Speaking of great questions, I've got one for you.

Matt Edmundson:

That was almost professional.

Matt Edmundson:

It was almost like, Oh, we planned that, scripted that.

Matt Edmundson:

We just, we rehearsed that so many times.

Matt Edmundson:

I feel like we pulled that off.

Matt Edmundson:

No one would know.

Matt Edmundson:

That was seamless.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah, I worked hard at that one.

Sadaf Beynon:

Okay.

Sadaf Beynon:

So well done.

Sadaf Beynon:

Thank you.

Sadaf Beynon:

What's one piece of.

Sadaf Beynon:

What outdated podcasting advice do you think that people need to ditch or avoid?

Matt Edmundson:

I think it's the need to edit out all the ums.

Matt Edmundson:

So as you answered, asked the question, I just, I realized,

Matt Edmundson:

cause I can hear myself in my ears.

Matt Edmundson:

I've just gone so it's one of those where still quite a lot of podcasters do this.

Matt Edmundson:

They'll record the podcast and then they will spend hours and hours editing.

Matt Edmundson:

In software to get rid of the errs and the spaces and the blanks.

Matt Edmundson:

And if you do the style of podcasts that we would recommend that you do,

Matt Edmundson:

which is quite light hearted, quite conversational then you don't need to.

Matt Edmundson:

And so I remember I was talking to Amelia about this last year at Subsummit.

Matt Edmundson:

Amelia is a legend.

Matt Edmundson:

We should get her on Podjunction actually, just a little side

Matt Edmundson:

note, get Amelia Coomber on here.

Matt Edmundson:

I was talking to Amelia about this.

Matt Edmundson:

She was spending eight hours at editing her podcast, each podcast

Matt Edmundson:

has been eight hours and I sat down with her talking to her at Subsummit

Matt Edmundson:

and which if you're going to, by the way, if you're involved in eCommerce

Matt Edmundson:

membership based, check out subsummit.

Matt Edmundson:

com, I will be there, speaking at the event.

Matt Edmundson:

In fact, podcasting live at the event is what I'll be doing.

Matt Edmundson:

It's going to be great fun.

Matt Edmundson:

So do come join us.

Matt Edmundson:

SubSummit, quick cheeky plug.

Matt Edmundson:

They'll love it because I plugged them on a completely different podcast.

Matt Edmundson:

And yeah, so we talked and she was telling me it took her

Matt Edmundson:

eight hours to do a podcast.

Matt Edmundson:

I said, I'm going to challenge you to get that podcast done

Matt Edmundson:

completely in two hours or under.

Matt Edmundson:

And she messaged me a few weeks later.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, I've done it in under two hours.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah, I think that's probably one of the things I'd say

Sadaf Beynon:

we

Matt Edmundson:

become so enamored by the slick, polished presentation, which is

Matt Edmundson:

when if you're a BBC production, I get it.

Matt Edmundson:

If you're a high end podcast like Diary of the CEO and you've got eight staff and

Matt Edmundson:

a million pound a year budget, I get it.

Matt Edmundson:

If you're like mere mortals like me, I don't get it.

Matt Edmundson:

I just don't, I don't think we've got the time and energy.

Matt Edmundson:

I think that's why people drop out.

Matt Edmundson:

They're trying to make something so slick and so perfect.

Matt Edmundson:

And actually, I said this last week, I think it's the imperfections, which

Matt Edmundson:

Bring its authenticity quite a lot.

Matt Edmundson:

. So yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Don't be in rush to get rid of him.

Matt Edmundson:

When you listen to this podcast, you'll have heard me go, eh,

Matt Edmundson:

. We'll just leave him in there.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah, we do.

Matt Edmundson:

We do.

Matt Edmundson:

Even, to be fair, now, you can use the script and you can press a button

Matt Edmundson:

and it'll get rid of them all for

Sadaf Beynon:

you.

Matt Edmundson:

So you don't even have to spend hours editing.

Matt Edmundson:

But even I'm pillar words.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm a little bit reluctant to get rid of those and the filler words.

Matt Edmundson:

I quite like them.

Matt Edmundson:

Not for shorts, by the way.

Matt Edmundson:

I would take them out for a short, because it needs to be snappy.

Sadaf Beynon:

So I had a thought on this one.

Matt Edmundson:

Oh, excellent.

Sadaf Beynon:

And I know I'm taken away from everything else, but

Sadaf Beynon:

I think it might be interesting.

Sadaf Beynon:

Sure.

Matt Edmundson:

You do what you want.

Matt Edmundson:

You do you.

Matt Edmundson:

You live your truth, come on.

Sadaf Beynon:

What was I saying?

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah, so I think also there is this, I could be wrong, it might not be outdated

Sadaf Beynon:

at all, but in my head, it's a bit outdated that, like interview formats.

Sadaf Beynon:

So even what we're doing now it's not main, it's not, I'm

Sadaf Beynon:

going to stop talking now.

Sadaf Beynon:

for listening.

Sadaf Beynon:

Can you help me?

Sadaf Beynon:

I have

Matt Edmundson:

no idea what you're trying to say.

Sadaf Beynon:

What I'm trying to say is It's not

Matt Edmundson:

manufactured.

Matt Edmundson:

It's not scripted.

Matt Edmundson:

It's, I don't know, where are you trying to go with this?

Sadaf Beynon:

It's not,

Matt Edmundson:

Slick.

Matt Edmundson:

In any way, polished, professional.

Matt Edmundson:

It's not, the

Sadaf Beynon:

norm.

Matt Edmundson:

Okay.

Sadaf Beynon:

That's, I got there.

Sadaf Beynon:

Okay, well done.

Sadaf Beynon:

I might need to cut some of that out.

Sadaf Beynon:

But yeah, it's not the norm, is it so that it's more varied,

Sadaf Beynon:

we're adding more variety to it.

Sadaf Beynon:

But I think it's also the same in the podcast niche or

Sadaf Beynon:

topics that people talk about.

Sadaf Beynon:

So when it's more conversational, it is more varied.

Sadaf Beynon:

It is more like the content is more diverse and I think people come for that.

Sadaf Beynon:

And I think when we first started in my head, anyway, it was very much

Sadaf Beynon:

okay you pick a niche, you pick a topic, and this is the kind of stuff

Sadaf Beynon:

that you talk about forever, because this is the label on your podcast.

Sadaf Beynon:

But I think there's something to be said for the variety of the content as

Sadaf Beynon:

well, not like completely changing, your

Matt Edmundson:

We don't talk about plumbing on the eCommerce Podcast.

Matt Edmundson:

Yes, like

Sadaf Beynon:

that.

Sadaf Beynon:

We do talk about COVID on PodJunction, but though?

Matt Edmundson:

No, I do.

Matt Edmundson:

It's interesting.

Matt Edmundson:

What do you think?

Matt Edmundson:

So I was talking to a beautiful lady.

Matt Edmundson:

What day is it today?

Matt Edmundson:

Is today Thursday?

Matt Edmundson:

It is.

Matt Edmundson:

I saw her Tuesday and she said to me Matt, I was listening to your

Matt Edmundson:

eCommerce Podcast because we're looking at whether to invest or

Matt Edmundson:

partner with that business in some way.

Matt Edmundson:

And I was listening to your podcast on the way to see whoever was in the car.

Matt Edmundson:

And she said I chose the one about burnout, which was a bit of an unusual

Matt Edmundson:

topic for the eCommerce podcast, because we talk about eCommerce, but

Matt Edmundson:

I want us to do this one where we talk about what it's like to be an eCommerce

Matt Edmundson:

business leader and actually how you can experience burnout and some of

Matt Edmundson:

the things that you can talk about.

Matt Edmundson:

So it was slightly off piste.

Matt Edmundson:

But it was still connected.

Matt Edmundson:

We had a brand new listener and that was the one she chose.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

I thought it was fascinating.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah, you can add variety as a spice of life, but it has

Matt Edmundson:

to stay connected to the theme.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

All right.

Matt Edmundson:

Is that all right?

Matt Edmundson:

That is all right answer?

Matt Edmundson:

That's great.

Matt Edmundson:

Awesome.

Sadaf Beynon:

Because it was my answer.

Sadaf Beynon:

I'm kidding.

Matt Edmundson:

I love when you say something a little bit cheeky, you

Matt Edmundson:

always follow up with I'm kidding.

Matt Edmundson:

It's like your default.

Matt Edmundson:

Whereas me, I'd say whatever and I'd just leave it in the air.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't qualify with that.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm just joking, really.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm like, whatever.

Matt Edmundson:

Ah, brilliant.

Matt Edmundson:

Anyway, enough about us.

Matt Edmundson:

Let's listen to Lee and then Sadaf and I will be back after this.

Matt Edmundson:

Here's Lee.

Matt Edmundson:

So you started the podcast because of this conversation with Chris and

Matt Edmundson:

because of the events with Chris.

Lee Houghton:

Yep.

Matt Edmundson:

Has it benefited your business in any way doing the podcast?

Lee Houghton:

Yeah, so I think it yes is the easy answer to that question but

Lee Houghton:

directly and indirectly as well, what I found is credibility, so credibility

Lee Houghton:

is definitely increased because it's a weekly thing and I can post about that.

Lee Houghton:

Not everybody in our space has got a podcast, so credibility has increased.

Lee Houghton:

I was in a client meeting probably about six months ago now with the

Lee Houghton:

manufacturing director, the people director, and the COO was dialing in.

Lee Houghton:

And as he dialed in he went, Oh, it's it's amazing to see the face.

Lee Houghton:

I've been listening to the podcast this morning.

Lee Houghton:

I was like, oh wow, I didn't realize that, but it's because I'm just talking about

Lee Houghton:

the stuff that I do all by day as well.

Lee Houghton:

It just helped further build credibility and it's helped real people think

Lee Houghton:

that they know me before they know me because of the stuff that I'm

Lee Houghton:

saying, it's just authentically me.

Lee Houghton:

I have the same conversations like 24/7.

Lee Houghton:

All of the time.

Lee Houghton:

So credibility has increased.

Lee Houghton:

Just my ability to create and develop content has increased as well.

Lee Houghton:

Yeah.

Lee Houghton:

It's won us some business.

Lee Houghton:

It started some business, but it's also maintained relationships with the, so

Lee Houghton:

if I'm working in an organization now and I'm leaving, then the people that

Lee Houghton:

I'm leaving behind are podcast listeners because they've had some value, so then

Lee Houghton:

I maintain a relationship directly and indirectly with them so that I still

Lee Houghton:

get a message every Monday when a podcast is released with a review from

Lee Houghton:

somebody I worked with two years ago.

Lee Houghton:

It's amazing.

Lee Houghton:

And there's I can never, what I can't do is go, having a podcast

Lee Houghton:

has generated X number of pounds.

Lee Houghton:

Yeah.

Lee Houghton:

I can't do that directly.

Lee Houghton:

Yeah.

Lee Houghton:

I can show the, where it's helped generate some pounds.

Lee Houghton:

But I've not just drawn the straight line.

Lee Houghton:

It's helped me start conversations with people that I've wanted to do

Lee Houghton:

business with as well because it's provided a platform for senior people in

Lee Houghton:

organizations that I'd love to work with.

Lee Houghton:

It's provided a platform for me to get to know them because I can have a

Lee Houghton:

conversation before the pod, you can have a conversation on the pod, and you

Lee Houghton:

can have a conversation post pod, to really just get to know them as people.

Lee Houghton:

So it's a great relationship builder, it's a great credibility builder, and

Lee Houghton:

it's a great business development builder.

Lee Houghton:

And then personally, it's a great personal development builder.

Lee Houghton:

Yes, I answered yes really.

Lee Houghton:

And I think there's so many benefits to having a podcast that I just

Lee Houghton:

never envisaged at the start.

Lee Houghton:

Like I said before, I started it just to keep my lessons alive.

Lee Houghton:

And yeah, but the benefits I'm seeing, now yeah just amazing.

Lee Houghton:

I love it.

Lee Houghton:

Love it.

Lee Houghton:

Oh, isn't that brilliant?

Lee Houghton:

That's probably the reason why, for those four reasons there, that it's got 200 odd

Lee Houghton:

episodes and I can't see it ever ending.

Lee Houghton:

So yeah, so that's yeah.

Lee Houghton:

Yes, loads of benefits.

Matt Edmundson:

And it's interesting when you say, I can't see it ever

Matt Edmundson:

ending because what that tells me, Lee, is actually not only are there the

Matt Edmundson:

benefits to your business and yourself, it sounds like you get immense joy and

Matt Edmundson:

satisfaction out of doing the podcast.

Matt Edmundson:

It's something that you've actually come to love doing just for yourself, just

Matt Edmundson:

as much as for your business, right?

Lee Houghton:

Yes.

Lee Houghton:

Oh completely.

Lee Houghton:

I absolutely love it.

Lee Houghton:

I am.

Lee Houghton:

So I used to have six episodes stacked ready to go, so I'd have

Lee Houghton:

a little buffer of episodes.

Lee Houghton:

so I didn't worry and things.

Lee Houghton:

And then when it get down to one episode to go, there'd be a bit of a panic and

Lee Houghton:

I'd have to try to record one really quickly to make sure that I could get

Lee Houghton:

it out the following week and stuff.

Lee Houghton:

And I think back now that actually I didn't want to let anybody down.

Lee Houghton:

I wa I absolutely love it.

Lee Houghton:

I'm in this rhythm of one every single week, every Monday, six o'clock or

Lee Houghton:

whatever time it gets scheduled, it comes out and I didn't want to let anybody

Lee Houghton:

down if there's one person listening.

Lee Houghton:

So there's a bit of a pride thing there's a bit of a consistency thing.

Matt Edmundson:

Very good.

Matt Edmundson:

Very nice.

Matt Edmundson:

Slight pause at the end there.

Matt Edmundson:

That's because we weren't hot on the switch, but I was too engrossed in the

Matt Edmundson:

interview chatting away with Lee there.

Matt Edmundson:

So again, Lee, what a legend.

Matt Edmundson:

Thanks for coming on the show, man.

Matt Edmundson:

And Yeah, the benefits of podcasting.

Matt Edmundson:

What did you think?

Sadaf Beynon:

I thought it was really good.

Sadaf Beynon:

I liked that he, again, he brought in from last week as well, he talked

Sadaf Beynon:

about the personal growth aspect of podcasting and he's brought that up

Sadaf Beynon:

again in this and as, as you pointed out, like he clearly loves, doesn't he?

Sadaf Beynon:

And there's he's benefiting from it in so many different ways.

Matt Edmundson:

It's really interesting actually.

Matt Edmundson:

That was the end point that he touched on.

Matt Edmundson:

And having a, I think, does podcasting help your business?

Matt Edmundson:

Absolutely.

Matt Edmundson:

Can it help the majority of businesses?

Matt Edmundson:

Absolutely.

Matt Edmundson:

But fundamentally for it to do that.

Matt Edmundson:

I think you've got to come to a place where you love what you do.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't know if you have to start out there.

Matt Edmundson:

I think sometimes you look, you get passionate about the

Matt Edmundson:

things you become good at.

Matt Edmundson:

But at some point you've got to have this belief and passion in

Matt Edmundson:

what you're doing to maintain doing it because it takes work, right?

Matt Edmundson:

It's not like it just falls out of the sky, the podcast, you've got to prep it.

Matt Edmundson:

You've got to do some work behind it.

Matt Edmundson:

And I think for Lee, whenever you talk to him, that is genuinely a

Matt Edmundson:

man that really enjoys what he does.

Matt Edmundson:

He loves podcasting for all the reasons that we'll talk about.

Matt Edmundson:

And he mentioned, but there is that fundamental desire and

Matt Edmundson:

passion for what he is doing and it comes across in his podcast.

Matt Edmundson:

It comes across in his voice and that's what makes him a really good podcaster.

Matt Edmundson:

He just loves what he does.

Matt Edmundson:

And there was a comment he made towards the end, which I think is so powerful.

Matt Edmundson:

He said, when it comes to putting out the episodes, he

Matt Edmundson:

didn't want to let anybody down.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

And when you care about your audience that much, you're onto a

Matt Edmundson:

winner because it's fascinating.

Matt Edmundson:

We talk about, podcasting, it needs to fit into my schedule, blah, blah, blah.

Matt Edmundson:

But when you get good and your podcast grows, people are counting on you

Matt Edmundson:

to put information out there every week and thinking and caring about

Matt Edmundson:

your audience and being passionate about what you're delivering to them.

Matt Edmundson:

As there aren't many people that talk about that and Lee did.

Matt Edmundson:

And I think that comes across cause he's just such a legend of a guy, so yeah, I, I

Matt Edmundson:

think that's a phenomenal starting place.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

Do you remember the lessons that he learned from his friend?

Matt Edmundson:

Oh, you've put me on the spot there.

Matt Edmundson:

No, I wish I had my notebook with me.

Matt Edmundson:

He talked about, but he talked about, I remember him having the conversation with

Matt Edmundson:

Chris and it changed his life in some of the, in terms of his friend was, I think

Matt Edmundson:

his friend was dying and he learned some, I think there were just regrets or things

Matt Edmundson:

that he wished he'd done differently.

Matt Edmundson:

And Lee was like I'm going to make sure that I listened to what you're

Matt Edmundson:

saying, and put those into practice.

Matt Edmundson:

But I'm going to have to add a good segue, listen to the full length episode.

Matt Edmundson:

They're all in there.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah, I also thought it was interesting that he talked about how

Sadaf Beynon:

the podcast increased his credibility and because that's something Marcia

Sadaf Beynon:

touched on as well, didn't she, when we were doing her episode and how it's how

Sadaf Beynon:

that guy that got the call with him.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

Just.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

I think.

Matt Edmundson:

To shortcut everything, every guest we have on PodJunction.

Matt Edmundson:

If I say to them or you say to them when you're interviewing them or if I'm

Matt Edmundson:

interviewing them, what are the benefits to your business from podcasting?

Matt Edmundson:

They're all gonna say the same thing in when it comes to credibility,

Matt Edmundson:

they're all gonna say, it helps me start great conversations

Matt Edmundson:

and it builds my credibility.

Matt Edmundson:

It gives me great content.

Matt Edmundson:

I've not yet met anybody that can say.

Matt Edmundson:

This podcast has brought in this much money other than if you're doing a

Matt Edmundson:

sponsorship style podcast, we do talk about that on the show, but if you're

Matt Edmundson:

using it to build your business like Lee, so he's using it for connections

Matt Edmundson:

and maintaining relationships and all that sort of stuff with his business

Matt Edmundson:

coaching clients, then it's very hard to monetize that, but he's passionate about

Matt Edmundson:

it, he loves it and he keeps doing it.

Matt Edmundson:

And you will, I think you'll hear that as a common theme, credibility

Matt Edmundson:

being, I think the key one, it increases your credibility.

Matt Edmundson:

And so the lady that I spoke to two days ago, when she was listening to the

Matt Edmundson:

burnout episode, what I can't tell you is the fact that she listened to me in her

Matt Edmundson:

car on a podcast, talking about a topic, and we're having conversations about

Matt Edmundson:

do we get involved with their business?

Matt Edmundson:

. I don't know how much credibility I've scored with her from that episode.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

But there will be some . And the fact that she could listen to me in a

Matt Edmundson:

podcast in the car would've helped the conversation I had with her subsequently.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

And that's one of the things that Lee was talking about, wasn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

And I think it's such a powerful thing.

Matt Edmundson:

And I, yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

I dunno how to quantify it.

Matt Edmundson:

And until you've experienced it, it's a very hard thing to get

Matt Edmundson:

your head around in some respects.

Matt Edmundson:

But as soon as you've done it, as soon as you've gone and put a podcast out

Matt Edmundson:

there and somebody's listened to it and you, and they talk to you about it,

Sadaf Beynon:

yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

You get it?

Matt Edmundson:

. Sadaf Beynon: Does that make sense?

Matt Edmundson:

. . Matt Edmundson: So yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Credibility is maive.

Sadaf Beynon:

It's interesting, isn't it?

Sadaf Beynon:

The podcasting platform.

Sadaf Beynon:

It's so multifaceted.

Sadaf Beynon:

And you're getting so much out of it.

Sadaf Beynon:

It's not just what's on the bottom line, is it?

Sadaf Beynon:

So it's quite cool.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, it is.

Matt Edmundson:

It is.

Matt Edmundson:

And I think you cannot underestimate, and this is where you have to remember when

Matt Edmundson:

things get tough, when things get hard and you go, Oh, no one's called me this week.

Matt Edmundson:

I mentioned my business on the podcast, but no one picked up the phone,

Matt Edmundson:

there's, it's easy to look at it.

Matt Edmundson:

And this is why I think quite a lot of podcasters stop is because you

Matt Edmundson:

go, hang on, I did a podcast, four people listened to it this week.

Matt Edmundson:

And no one called when I mentioned my business and it's

Matt Edmundson:

yeah, no one's going to call.

Matt Edmundson:

It's an obvious statement to make, but when you do it week in,

Matt Edmundson:

week out, when it's getting hard.

Matt Edmundson:

If you've got that passion for it, you'll keep doing it.

Matt Edmundson:

But yeah, it's the other things that you also have to look at the

Matt Edmundson:

credibility factor, the how many interesting conversations have I

Matt Edmundson:

had with people that I wouldn't have had I have not done the podcast.

Matt Edmundson:

And if you target those conversations, like with people that you want to do

Matt Edmundson:

business with, that's just wild, right?

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, you've got to look beyond the pound, shilling and

Matt Edmundson:

pence, as we say here in the UK.

Matt Edmundson:

And I think you've got to, you've got to see it.

Matt Edmundson:

On this sort of multifaceted.

Matt Edmundson:

Benefit level which is not always easily that, it's not always that easy to

Matt Edmundson:

measure is a better way to phrase that.

Sadaf Beynon:

And it comes with time, isn't it?

Sadaf Beynon:

It's an accumulative effect rather than.

Matt Edmundson:

A lot like social media in that sense, social media, it's hard to

Matt Edmundson:

measure a return on investment sometimes.

Matt Edmundson:

And actually the people that do well at social media rave about it and 90

Matt Edmundson:

percent of people go, it doesn't work.

Matt Edmundson:

Clearly it does, but for the 90 percent of people that did it and it didn't work.

Matt Edmundson:

Probably what they didn't work and I'd say podcasting is the same thing,

Matt Edmundson:

most of the people that drop out say podcasting isn't where you go.

Matt Edmundson:

Actually, I think podcasting works 99.

Matt Edmundson:

9 percent of the time, where you've missed it is in this area.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, if that makes sense.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

What else?

Sadaf Beynon:

What else?

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah, I guess the other thing maybe is his like the personal

Sadaf Beynon:

satisfaction that he gets out of it and the personal development that's

Sadaf Beynon:

come out of it for him as well.

Sadaf Beynon:

It's not just the credibility and the business that's developing as

Sadaf Beynon:

a result of it, but his personal.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, I was smiling because when he was talking

Matt Edmundson:

about that, he used the word pod.

Matt Edmundson:

And it's one of those words, I think, when you start doing podcasting,

Matt Edmundson:

you shorten the word podcast to pod.

Matt Edmundson:

And it just reminds me of the people that say, ping me an email

Matt Edmundson:

rather than send, ping, ping and pod, it's the same thing really.

Matt Edmundson:

I, Lee, I think you're a legend.

Matt Edmundson:

I just, I can't use the word pod myself.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't know.

Matt Edmundson:

I, some people do it.

Matt Edmundson:

You get around people.

Matt Edmundson:

Oh yeah, the pod's doing really well.

Matt Edmundson:

Pod?

Matt Edmundson:

Oh, the podcast.

Matt Edmundson:

Okay.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah, if you abbreviate pod, good on you.

Matt Edmundson:

I just, I can't do it.

Matt Edmundson:

But yeah, you're right.

Matt Edmundson:

It's that.

Matt Edmundson:

Again, that benefit, isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

And these are those intangibles, massive intangibles.

Matt Edmundson:

Like this morning, what I wrote an email to a supplier that we're

Matt Edmundson:

going to use for a new website.

Matt Edmundson:

I copied in Jen, who's the marketing head of marketing in

Matt Edmundson:

that, and so copied those two in.

Matt Edmundson:

And I also brought in a guest who had been on the show, who I know

Matt Edmundson:

could help with that whole thing.

Matt Edmundson:

And I'm like, let's get him involved in the conversation.

Matt Edmundson:

And so that network, that growth in terms of people that

Matt Edmundson:

I know was, it's been brilliant.

Matt Edmundson:

I, if I had not done the podcast, I wouldn't have been able to bring him

Matt Edmundson:

in the conversation and he wouldn't be able to bring into the conversation, the

Matt Edmundson:

value that I know he's going to bring.

Matt Edmundson:

Does that make sense?

Matt Edmundson:

I can't, again, can I quantify that?

Matt Edmundson:

I don't know.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't know how I'd try, but it's.

Matt Edmundson:

It's that aspect of it, which for me is a big deal, the ability to say,

Matt Edmundson:

Oh, talk to such and such a person, or let's get such and such on the

Matt Edmundson:

phone and talk to them, I think is my personal network has grown tremendously.

Matt Edmundson:

And so we've, in business, I won't go into all the details, but we've

Matt Edmundson:

made some big changes recently, we're making some big changes.

Matt Edmundson:

Part of that, if I trace the origins of that, came from the

Matt Edmundson:

fact that I had a conversation with a, we did a podcast with a guy.

Matt Edmundson:

Had a great conversation.

Matt Edmundson:

A year later, I connect back with him, check in, have a conversation with him.

Matt Edmundson:

And the result of that conversation cemented in my head,

Matt Edmundson:

Some things that I was thinking about, which has resulted in

Matt Edmundson:

some big changes in our business.

Matt Edmundson:

Again, all happened because of the podcast and people that I knew from the podcast.

Matt Edmundson:

Those big changes, are they going to make money?

Matt Edmundson:

Absolutely.

Matt Edmundson:

Can I put them all down to the podcast?

Matt Edmundson:

No, not at all.

Matt Edmundson:

But podcasting was definitely part of it.

Matt Edmundson:

And this is what I mean.

Matt Edmundson:

It's all these extra stories, whether it's my personal growth, whether it's my

Matt Edmundson:

network, whether it's credibility, whether it's having meaningful conversations,

Matt Edmundson:

whatever it is, whether I can get somebody in on a conversation about a website

Matt Edmundson:

we're trying to develop and get his benefits in there, his value as well.

Matt Edmundson:

So much stuff.

Matt Edmundson:

So much stuff.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, I don't know what your question was.

Matt Edmundson:

I felt like I rambled then.

Sadaf Beynon:

No, I don't remember the question either.

Matt Edmundson:

You can tell ladies and gentlemen, we don't subscribe

Matt Edmundson:

to the show has to be Uber polished.

Matt Edmundson:

And we definitely don't have a script playing on the

Matt Edmundson:

teleprompter in front of us.

Matt Edmundson:

Because that would just be a ridiculous script we would have just written.

Matt Edmundson:

But yeah, no I think, we'll talk about this a lot on the show.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm curious.

Matt Edmundson:

So if you're listening to episode 20, and we've talked about this a couple of times,

Matt Edmundson:

maybe this is your first time with us.

Matt Edmundson:

Maybe it's not.

Matt Edmundson:

Maybe you're thinking about podcasting as a tool to grow your business.

Matt Edmundson:

Maybe you're using podcasting.

Matt Edmundson:

Maybe you love it.

Matt Edmundson:

Maybe you're struggling with it.

Matt Edmundson:

I am really curious where you're at and what the benefits

Matt Edmundson:

to you and your business are.

Matt Edmundson:

So reach out to me on social media, just find me on Instagram, Matt

Matt Edmundson:

Edmundson, or find me on LinkedIn, Matt Edmundson and just let me know.

Matt Edmundson:

I'd love to hear from you.

Matt Edmundson:

I'd love to know what you think, what the benefits to you are.

Matt Edmundson:

To your business are for podcasting and we'll cajole all the information

Matt Edmundson:

together, 'cause it really intrigues me, what people say.

Matt Edmundson:

And like I say, there are some common threads amongst it, but then there

Matt Edmundson:

are things which I think become unique to you and your business.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

And so yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Super curious, but this is how we use podcasting, grow our business.

Matt Edmundson:

Yes.

Matt Edmundson:

Many ways, which is why we're on episode 20 and we've not

Matt Edmundson:

even scratched the surface.

Matt Edmundson:

We've got a long way to go yet.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

We're talking about episode 500 now.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah,

Matt Edmundson:

plus celebrating.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, absolutely.

Matt Edmundson:

We just, we love it.

Matt Edmundson:

Do you love it?

Matt Edmundson:

Do you love the podcasting thing?

Matt Edmundson:

I do.

Matt Edmundson:

Kind of thing.

Sadaf Beynon:

You know what?

Sadaf Beynon:

I think I'm very early in my journey of hosting.

Matt Edmundson:

Early on this side of the microphone.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yes.

Sadaf Beynon:

It is interesting.

Sadaf Beynon:

It's very exciting.

Sadaf Beynon:

And I can see what you guys talk about as far as the evolution of your style.

Sadaf Beynon:

I'm excited for where I'm going to end up.

Sadaf Beynon:

I'm not loving where I'm at right now.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah,

Matt Edmundson:

that's great.

Matt Edmundson:

Just a backstory.

Matt Edmundson:

If you're listening to the show, Sadaf.

Matt Edmundson:

And I've worked together for years and I've normally been the

Matt Edmundson:

guy behind the microphone and you are the head of production.

Matt Edmundson:

In fact, you now run the whole podcast company.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't know what that means job title wise, but it's

Matt Edmundson:

just like the boss, the dude.

Matt Edmundson:

And yeah, but so you've got a lot of experience on the

Matt Edmundson:

other side of the microphone.

Matt Edmundson:

And this is the first time.

Matt Edmundson:

been on this side of the microphone.

Matt Edmundson:

So this is your 20th episode of Podjunction into podcasting.

Matt Edmundson:

So it's a big milestone for you.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't even know what episode I'm on.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't know if I can count that high.

Matt Edmundson:

But for you, it's awesome.

Matt Edmundson:

And what's interesting, actually, we should bring it out, we were talking about

Matt Edmundson:

this the other day with the video intros.

Matt Edmundson:

So we use these clips.

Matt Edmundson:

On the podcast, like the intro, it's you talking welcome to PodJunction , the end.

Matt Edmundson:

It's thanks for watching.

Matt Edmundson:

And we hadn't in this episode, but we usually have a little bit of midroll and

Matt Edmundson:

stuff and that's you talking as well.

Matt Edmundson:

And actually the evolution for you has been the energy.

Matt Edmundson:

So if you watch that is, that's one of the evolutions.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, it is.

Matt Edmundson:

If you watch some of the earlier episodes set ups welcome to Podcast

Matt Edmundson:

It's great that you're here,

Matt Edmundson:

. Sadaf Beynon: It's true.

Matt Edmundson:

And we ran with it because you've gotta start somewhere, right?

Matt Edmundson:

And yes, we can.

Matt Edmundson:

We can wax lyrical, you're a podcast company, should you do better?

Matt Edmundson:

I'm like, we wanted to do this the same way you guys would do it in terms of

Matt Edmundson:

launching it and getting people listening.

Matt Edmundson:

So when you, and if you watch some of the earlier episodes, just listen to the

Matt Edmundson:

intros, and we were talking earlier, we need to redo them all because everything's

Matt Edmundson:

changing here as it does and evolves.

Matt Edmundson:

But I don't know if actually they've seen any of the newer stuff that

Matt Edmundson:

you've done, the energy is much higher

Matt Edmundson:

and

Matt Edmundson:

actually you're smiling at the camera rather than looking at it, scared

Matt Edmundson:

of it, it's that kind of thing.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

The

Sadaf Beynon:

other evolution I'd like to point out is my use of the microphone.

Sadaf Beynon:

If you haven't noticed, Matt hasn't prompted me for quite some time now.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, I've not gone.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, we all get better at talking to the microphone, absolutely.

Matt Edmundson:

And also, when you laugh, you move away from the mic.

Matt Edmundson:

That's another thing.

Matt Edmundson:

But yeah, no, it's good.

Matt Edmundson:

It's good.

Matt Edmundson:

Your mic technique is good.

Matt Edmundson:

Your energy levels are getting better.

Matt Edmundson:

It's almost like you're a pro.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't think people would have noticed had we not told them.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah, that's okay.

Matt Edmundson:

Even if you've been on a bit of a go slow today.

Sadaf Beynon:

It's pretty good.

Sadaf Beynon:

Pretty good going.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, absolutely.

Matt Edmundson:

Awesome.

Matt Edmundson:

Anything else from you?

Matt Edmundson:

No.

Matt Edmundson:

Legend.

Matt Edmundson:

We're going to clear off.

Matt Edmundson:
