Ip Man is invited by one of his students, Bruce Lee, to come to America. Despite tensions at home and the recent news of cancer, Ip Man accepts the invitation to San Francisco with the goal of finding a school for his struggling teenage son. Ip Man arrives to find tensions between rival martial arts following, Kung Fu and Karate, in addition to pressures and racism against the Chinese people. The frustrations boil over when a Karate master interrupts a Chinatown festival in an attempt to prove Karate superior to the Kung Fu masters. The egregious challenge leads to conflict, and the Kung Fu scenes ensue.
