Get ready to roll up those sleeves, because this Saturday, we’re diving headfirst into some hot home projects you’ll want to tackle before the summer heat turns your backyard into a sauna! Eric G is here to chat about the top tasks that’ll keep your outdoor space in tip-top shape and make you the envy of the neighborhood—think barbecues that don’t melt your siding and decks that won’t send you flying into the bushes. But wait, there's more! In the second hour, we’ll dish out the juicy mistakes designers often make when crafting kitchen and bath cabinetry. Spoiler alert: it’s all about that sweet, sweet spatial awareness—because nobody wants to be doing the kitchen shuffle around an oversized island! So, whether you’re looking to spruce up your space or avoid rookie design blunders, we’ve got you covered. Tune in for all the tips, tricks, and a sprinkle of banter that’ll have you laughing while you learn!

Get ready to roll up your sleeves and dive into the nitty-gritty of home improvement! This week, Eric and his co-host dish out some sizzling hot tips just in time for summer projects. We kick things off by discussing how to tackle those outdoor spaces before the heat wave hits. Nothing says ‘I’m ready for summer’ like a well-prepped patio, right? Eric emphasizes the importance of ensuring your barbecue isn't too close to the house—because we all know that melted vinyl siding is not the summer look anyone is going for! With a witty banter about the dangers of grease fires and deck safety inspections, we get serious about checking those connections and making sure everything is secure. We’ll have you inspecting your decks like a pro in no time!

Moving into the second hour, we pivot to the world of interior design, where Eric reveals the top blunders that can make cabinetry projects go south. Think you can just toss an island in there without a plan? Think again! We chat about the all-important spatial awareness and how critical it is to maintain at least 42 inches of walkway space—because let’s be real, nobody wants to play a game of kitchen Twister every time they go for a snack. Eric shares some great insights on how the design software can trick you into thinking you have more space than you really do. So, if you're dreaming of a kitchen that flows like a well-oiled machine instead of a crowded dance floor, this episode is your golden ticket!

Takeaways:

  • Before summer's sizzling heat kicks in, tackle those essential outdoor projects like deck safety checks and barbecue placements.
  • Watch out for that barbecue! Keep it a safe distance from your house to avoid melting siding and potential fires.
  • When designing kitchens and baths, spatial awareness is key; ensure you leave at least 42 inches of walkway space around islands.
  • Avoid the common pitfall of inadequate cabinetry design by paying attention to refrigerator space and how it interacts with countertops.

Now the next one here is on that barbecue.

Make sure you don't have it up against the house.

Speaker B:

How many people are melting that vinyl siding or spitting grease on it or catching the side of the house on fire?

Speaker B:

Make sure you got a few feet between that in the back of the barbecue.

No sense causing damage there.

Speaker A:

Second hour of the show, Eric shares the top mistakes interior designers can make when designing cabinetry projects and how you can learn from these tips for a better project.

Speaker B:

Now, number six, here is an important one, lack of spatial awareness and walkways.

Speaker B:

So many times people want to jam that island in there and they want to make as big as possible and they don't really realize how important that walkway space is.

Speaker B:

My minimum when you're walking around an island is 42 inches of walkway space.

Speaker B:

Now that is from countertop to countertop.

Speaker B:

What happens though is so many times when they draw it out, they use the design program.

Speaker B:

Well, it won't do it from countertop, it'll do it from the cabinet face.

Speaker B:

So you could lose an inch and a half there already.

Speaker B:

Why do I want that as a minimum?

Speaker B:

Think about it.

Speaker B:

If you're going to get a refrigerator in there and you know how refrigerators roll, it's a 36 inch wide refrigerator cabinet.

Speaker A:

All that and more on Saturday's around the House show with Eric G.
