Shownotes

Ever wonder why some people love the anticipation of a surprise while others need to know right now? In this episode, Lacey and Sara dive into their opposite approaches to cliffhangers, gifts, and waiting for joy.

Lacey shares her audiobook miracle moment (thank you, Libby!) and why she literally cannot handle knowing a surprise exists. Sara reveals her "joy on joy" moment passing along beloved IKEA play cubes to a toddler who's loving them just as much as her son did. Plus, a mysterious TikTok submission about being the inspiration for an anti-hero in a book sparks a whole new mystery for Sara to solve.

In This Episode:

  • [00:01:00] Lacey's library miracle: When the universe delivers book 2 exactly when you need it
  • [00:03:30] The great surprise divide: "I need to know NOW" vs. "I love the anticipation"
  • [00:06:00] Sara's joy perpetual motion: Passing on toys that keep spreading happiness
  • [00:08:15] The anti-hero mystery: Tiktoker’s cryptic book inspiration confession
  • [00:09:00] Sara finds her new mystery to solve (and Lacey gets anxiety just thinking about it)

Lacey:

Welcome to Joy Moments where we share stories of joy to

2

:

make joy ripples across the world.

3

:

I am Lacey here with Sarah.

4

:

Hi Sarah.

5

:

Sara: Hi Lacey.

6

:

You are right across the world.

7

:

I'm gonna go ahead and

say across the universe,

8

:

Lacey: Ooh, love it.

9

:

That

10

:

Sara: where the sound waves are going.

11

:

It could be everywhere.

12

:

Lacey: in like a thousand years,

they could reach something.

13

:

Is it, that's a thousand

light years, right?

14

:

Or is that further away?

15

:

I don't know that.

16

:

Yeah.

17

:

Isn't that

18

:

Sara: ripples are endless.

19

:

Yes.

20

:

Lacey: I just had a small existential

crisis, but in a good way.

21

:

Sara: One thing I love about us

is you just never know where our

22

:

conversation's gonna go, and we

just went deep real quick and

23

:

Lacey: Woo.

24

:

Sara: doing the intro.

25

:

Lacey: Yeah.

26

:

Well, I know Sarah and I are both

excited today 'cause I put a call out

27

:

on threads and TikTok for people's joy

moments and I've got quite a few, but I

28

:

know Sarah and I both have joy moments.

29

:

So I wanna start with ours and

then we will jump into others.

30

:

So do you want me to go first

or do you wanna go first?

31

:

Sara: I want you to go first.

32

:

Lacey: Okay.

33

:

So, as I believe I've talked about

before, here I am an avid audiobook.

34

:

Listener, reader, however

you wanna call it.

35

:

Audiobook count as reading.

36

:

Let's not talk about it.

37

:

Anyway.

38

:

and I am a very, I like to call

it mood based, very chaotic.

39

:

Like I just, I have like my, I check

certain things, certain when stuff

40

:

comes out in the library, I find it.

41

:

And I saw, something on Twitter

of a like recommendation.

42

:

I was like, oh, I'll try that book.

43

:

'cause I was in a little bit of a slump.

44

:

I don't usually read Dark Romance.

45

:

It's a little.

46

:

Not me, but this was a dark romance.

47

:

And since I was like in a slump, I'm

like, I'll try something different.

48

:

So I start listening to

it and first a pet peeve.

49

:

I don't understand why books need to be

like trilogies or duets, where it's one

50

:

story broken up over multiple books.

51

:

A don't like that

personally, but it's fine.

52

:

And I got into a series

without really knowing it.

53

:

So I got to the end of this

book, ends on a cliffhanger.

54

:

I mean, now I'm, I'm literally

telling you why people do this.

55

:

'cause what, talk about and I then

naturally searched the library, right?

56

:

Is this book, can I get this book?

57

:

And the libraries don't have it yet,

but Libby has this feature where

58

:

if it's a book that exists in their

system, you can say, notify me.

59

:

And if it comes available and it gets

added to your library, they will notify

60

:

you that it is ready the next day.

61

:

The second book.

62

:

Became available and I got to

borrow it and start it the next day.

63

:

Isn't that beautiful?

64

:

Like, I just, I'm almost to the end of

it, like, I've got about 45 minutes left.

65

:

Yes.

66

:

I like this.

67

:

I listen basically all day long,

so let's not judge me anyway.

68

:

and I'm thinking about not

finishing it so that I don't get

69

:

myself in the same situation.

70

:

'cause I like, I see where this

bus is driving, you know, like,

71

:

oh, we're gonna get to another.

72

:

Like, you know what I mean?

73

:

I was like, maybe I'll stop now

before we get to the true, true,

74

:

cliffhanger and go from there.

75

:

But, but yeah, I just, when that

happened yesterday, I was like, oh,

76

:

the universe is looking out for me.

77

:

This is fantastic.

78

:

You know, I had a book that was in between

the two and I was wrapping that one up.

79

:

Like it just Fantastic.

80

:

Loved it so much.

81

:

Thank you libraries.

82

:

Thank you universe.

83

:

Thank you.

84

:

Audio books.

85

:

Sara: I am laughing 'cause we are so

different like, I don't like that when

86

:

they break it up into three parts, I'm

like, I love that because that means

87

:

I get to be in that world even longer.

88

:

So, but I also get, I also get that

like, you're not gonna finish it because.

89

:

I didn't finish the last

episode of a Marvelous Mrs.

90

:

Maisel because I knew it was gonna be

a really uncomfortable club hanger.

91

:

I could see it.

92

:

And so I actually paused and I said, I

will watch that when the next season comes

93

:

out so I can go right into the resolution.

94

:

Lacey: Yeah.

95

:

Sara: So

96

:

Lacey: Yeah.

97

:

Sara: angles,

98

:

Lacey: I, but here's a,

here's a quick question.

99

:

Do you like surprises?

100

:

Sara: only if they make me happy.

101

:

Lacey: Well, okay.

102

:

Yeah, I, I'm, I'm talking about just

in general, most likely good surprises.

103

:

Like

104

:

Sara: Oh yeah.

105

:

No, I love, I, yeah.

106

:

Yes, yes,

107

:

Lacey: I, it's not that I don't like them.

108

:

I cannot handle them.

109

:

Okay.

110

:

So like, if I have an

inkling of a surprise coming.

111

:

I, I need to know right now.

112

:

I need to know right now.

113

:

I don't, I don't wanna wait.

114

:

I need to know right now.

115

:

It is a compulsion, it

is a problem for me.

116

:

And so like Hall and naturally, Joe loves

this fact and just tortures me with it.

117

:

So one of his favorite things to do

is be like, I bought your Christmas

118

:

present, and then leave it there.

119

:

And I'm like, you.

120

:

Sara: I actually, I am the, I am the

inverse of you because I love that.

121

:

I love having a, a gift

under the tree for 30 days.

122

:

building up of what could it be?

123

:

Knowing It's just knowing it's there.

124

:

It's almost hard for me to open

it because then that's gone.

125

:

That feeling is then gone.

126

:

are so

127

:

Lacey: We are so different.

128

:

This, and then you know what, this

also reminds me of the chocolate bobcat

129

:

story that you told where you and I are

also different in that I'm gonna eat

130

:

the whole chocolate bobcat right away

and you are gonna squirrel away little

131

:

chocolate bobcat nuggets for the future.

132

:

Sara: I wish I had some chocolate

vodka in my freezer right now.

133

:

Lacey: I cannot know that it

exists or it will consume me.

134

:

Hello.

135

:

Anxiety.

136

:

That's so, yeah, so

that's, that's from me.

137

:

Sara: It must be really

hard for you to plan a trip.

138

:

'cause you want it to happen.

139

:

You plan it, you want, you must

want it to happen the very next day.

140

:

Lacey: Oh, it's so hard for me, Sarah.

141

:

It's so hard for me.

142

:

So.

143

:

Sara: Okay.

144

:

Lacey: then giving a gift.

145

:

It's the same thing.

146

:

I'm like, I just, if I'm really

excited, I'm like, I just

147

:

wanna give you the gift now.

148

:

Like, I cannot, I'm, I'm a very

future oriented person and I think

149

:

that's part of it, is like my brain

is always moving to the future.

150

:

And once I know the future, I need the

future to be now, which is also a very

151

:

lacy thing that we've talked about a lot.

152

:

Sara: A very like deep thought,

I want the future to be now.

153

:

Well then it's the now and

then there's a new future.

154

:

Like you can never actually grasp it.

155

:

It's always out of reach.

156

:

Lacey: I mean, yeah.

157

:

Sara: Okay.

158

:

Before we turn this into ways that.

159

:

ways that, gifts torture.

160

:

Lacey, I will go into my joyful moment.

161

:

This, to me is joy on top of joy.

162

:

It is such the, it's like

a, what do you call this?

163

:

Perpetual motion.

164

:

It's like joy, professional motion.

165

:

Okay.

166

:

So when my son was little.

167

:

We had these pop-up tents, or

they weren't tents, they were

168

:

actually cubes and tunnels.

169

:

They're from ikea, so you can connect

the tunnel to the cubes, and we

170

:

had three tunnels and two cubes.

171

:

And so for a little tiny toddler that is.

172

:

amazing.

173

:

'cause you can start it in one

room and go to another room and

174

:

it becomes this whole thing.

175

:

And my son was extremely active.

176

:

I always joked he was

like three kids in one.

177

:

and so on rainy days or bad weather

days, I mean this is, this was this.

178

:

My sanity.

179

:

So son is older, he

doesn't need those anymore.

180

:

We don't have little

kids coming to the house.

181

:

so I went to clear him out

and my husband has a coworker

182

:

who has a very active toddler.

183

:

So I said, why don't you figure

out if he would like these?

184

:

And we sent them over and then my

husband showed a picture to me.

185

:

Of his coworker's son

popping his head out.

186

:

'cause the pop-up tents have these

little circles where you can like pop

187

:

your head out and he is just happy.

188

:

And so it's like that is reminding me

of the happy moments we had in the tent.

189

:

And then knowing that he is getting

to enjoy it and then it's helping his

190

:

parents to burn off the kids' steam.

191

:

I'm like, oh my gosh,

this is so beautiful.

192

:

So it made me.

193

:

I just, it just still makes me so happy

to know when you can pass on something you

194

:

Lacey: Yeah,

195

:

Sara: is gonna bring joy to somebody else.

196

:

Oh my gosh.

197

:

So much joy.

198

:

That's mine.

199

:

Lacey: something that's like kids toys.

200

:

We, got some hand-me-downs from Joe's

brother for Violet 'cause we got

201

:

rid of everything and she plays with

toys more than my other two kids did.

202

:

Combined and.

203

:

She, I, I've sent them videos of

her playing with the toys that were

204

:

hand-me-downs of just like, thank you.

205

:

She is loving this and loving every

minute of it, and that makes me

206

:

happy to be able to share with them.

207

:

Yeah.

208

:

Sara: yeah.

209

:

And that's just such a good reminder

about passing things on because they

210

:

can be enjoyed and used, but Okay.

211

:

Sorry, I just slipped

into home management.

212

:

Lacey: I did a call and

I got one from TikTok.

213

:

and it's my, my new friend Jim, he's one

of the only Unre men that came out of this

214

:

and he said I was the inspiration for an

anti-hero in a book that's selling well

215

:

in Amazon, but I won't tell you which one,

which as we now know, my only kills me.

216

:

But I mean, could you imagine being

somebody's inspiration in a book?

217

:

No.

218

:

Sara: But it's for the anti-hero.

219

:

Is that why he doesn't wanna

share the name of the book?

220

:

Lacey: I don't know.

221

:

Maybe, maybe not.

222

:

Look how fascinated you're

223

:

Sara: Okay.

224

:

Remember.

225

:

Okay.

226

:

Okay,

227

:

Lacey: okay.

228

:

Okay.

229

:

Okay.

230

:

Sara: Remember my mystery with the

actor I saw in the airport, who

231

:

I've already forgotten his name.

232

:

This is my new mystery.

233

:

I'm gonna be, I'm gonna learn

everything I can about, was it Jim?

234

:

Lacey: That's what the, the,

the name of her handle is.

235

:

Sara: I'm gonna, I'm gonna,

this is my new mystery.

236

:

Lacey: Okay.

237

:

This poor man doesn't know

what he got himself into.

238

:

Sara: Well, if he's, if he's in

a book that's sold on Amazon,

239

:

I mean, it's already pub.

240

:

I'm not like diving

into his personal life.

241

:

Well, I mean, I ha I'm okay.

242

:

Lacey: I mean, he's not sharing.

243

:

Sara: But I might be able

to figure out who it is.

244

:

Lacey: I mean, I could probably

ask him in DMS if you wanted

245

:

me to, or is that too much?

246

:

Sara: No, because remember, I

wanted a new mystery to chew on.

247

:

Lacey: Okay,

248

:

Sara: I may never know the answer

249

:

Lacey: you may not.

250

:

Sara: or I may find out tomorrow.

251

:

Lacey: Maybe

252

:

Sara: I love that.

253

:

Lacey: it's giving me anxiety.

254

:

Sara: those are our joy moments today

that we're gonna share and we, we

255

:

just, our hope is that one person got

1% joy in their day from hearing this.

256

:

So please remember, you can be part

of this joy ripple by listening,

257

:

by sharing this with others,

and by submitting your own joys.

258

:

Nothing is too big, too small.

259

:

It can be anything.

260

:

It doesn't have to be current.

261

:

It could have been something

that happened previously.

262

:

Lacey: Yeah,

263

:

Sara: hear all of the joy moments.

264

:

Lacey: for sure.

265

:

It doesn't have to be related to books.

266

:

So yeah, that too.

267

:

Sara: and where do they go

to submit their joy moments?

268

:

I

269

:

Lacey: They can head to joyful

support movement.com/submit

270

:

to submit their joy moment and also any

of the other things for our podcasts.

271

:

Sara: thank you Lacey.

272

:

Lacey: Thank you Sarah.
