Hedy Lamarr was far more than just a beautiful actress. During World War II she invented and patented, with George Antheil, frequency hopping - a technology protecting against communication jamming. The US Navy didn't use the technology until the Cuban missile crises (reportedly they used it to protected against jamming when carrying out anti-submarine warfare) and it is today behind many technologies we use every day, from WiFi to GPS!
