In this Spirit of Christmas present episode, Anne and Drea get messy with two very different bourbon based cocktails and learn about their friendship -- a Christmas miracle. Andrea traces the history and development of bourbon, beginning with Indigenous alcohol production across the American continents and following the US Revolutionary War, prohibition, through to Congress's recognition of bourbon as a "distinctly American product and all the way to the bourbon renaissance in the 2000s. To make Drea’s Left Hand cocktail: 1 ½ ounces bourbon ¾ ounce vermouth ¾ ounce campari 3 dashes of chocolate bitters Cherry and orange wedge garnish Shake with ice and pour into a coupe For Anne’s “adjustment:” take Drea’s drink + 1.5 ml of ginger simple syrup + juice of an orange + club soda to taste Pairings include: 2000s pop punk, Steely Dan, the novels Emma and the Maltese Falcon and as many Muppets as we can find.
