Speaker:Today we'll be continuing the Strange Case of Dr.
Speaker:Jekyll and Mr.
Speaker:Hyde by Robert Lewis Stevenson.
Speaker:Dr.
Speaker:Jekyll was quite at ease.
Speaker:A fortnight later, by excellent good fortune, the doctor gave one of his pleasant dinners to some five or six old cronies, all intelligent, reputable men and all.
Speaker:Judges of good wine, and Mr.
Speaker:Utterson.
Speaker:So contrived that he remained behind after.
Speaker:The others had departed.
Speaker:This was no new arrangement, but a thing that had befallen many scores of times where Utterson was liked, he was liked well.
Speaker:Hosts loved to detain the dry lawyer.
Speaker:When the light hearted and loose tongue.
Speaker:Did already their foot on the threshold.
Speaker:They liked to sit a while in his unobtrusive company, practicing for solitude, sobering their minds in the man's rich silence after the expense and strain of gaiety.
Speaker:To this rule.
Speaker:Dr.
Speaker:Jekyll was no exception.
Speaker:And as he now sat on the opposite side of the fire a large, well made, smooth faced man of 50 with something of a slyish cast, perhaps, but every mark of capacity and kindness you could see by his looks that he cherished for Mr.
Speaker:Utterson a sincere and warm affection.
Speaker:I've been waiting to speak to you, Jekyll began.
Speaker:The latter, you know that will of yours.
Speaker:A close observer might have gathered that the topic was distasteful, but the doctor carried it off gaily.
Speaker:My poor Utterson said he you're unfortunate in such a client.
Speaker:I never saw a man so distressed as you were by my will.
Speaker:Unless it were that hide bound pendant Lanyon at what he called my scientific heresies.
Speaker:Oh, I know he's a good fellow.
Speaker:You needn't frown.
Speaker:An excellent fellow, and I always mean to see more of him.
Speaker:But a hide bound pedant for all that.
Speaker:An ignorant, blatant pedant.
Speaker:I was never more disappointed in any man than Lanyon.
Speaker:You know I never approved of it.
Speaker:Pursued Utterson ruthlessly disregarding the fresh topic.
Speaker:My will.
Speaker:Yes, certainly I know that, said the.
Speaker:Doctor a trifle sharply.
Speaker:You've told me so.
Speaker:Well, I tell you so again, continued the lawyer.
Speaker:I've been learning something of young Hyde.
Speaker:The large, handsome face of Dr.
Speaker:Jekyll grew pale to the very lips, and there came a blackness about his eyes.
Speaker:I do not care to hear more, said he.
Speaker:This is a matter I thought we had agreed to drop.
Speaker:What I heard was Abominable said Utterson.
Speaker:It can make no change.
Speaker:You do not understand my position, returned the doctor.
Speaker:With a certain incoherency of manner I'm painfully situated.
Speaker:Utterson, my position is very strange, a very strange one.
Speaker:It is one of those affairs that cannot be mended by talking jackal, said Utterson.
Speaker:You know me.
Speaker:I'm a man to be trusted.
Speaker:Make a clean breast of this in confidence, and I make no doubt I can get you out of it.
Speaker:My good Utterson, said the doctor, this is very good of you.
Speaker:This is downright good of you, and I cannot find words to thank you in.
Speaker:I believe you fully.
Speaker:I would trust you before any man alive.
Speaker:I before myself if I could make the choice.
Speaker:But indeed, it isn't what you fancy.
Speaker:It is not as bad as that.
Speaker:And just to put your good heart at rest, I will tell you one thing.
Speaker:The moment I choose, I can be rid of Mr.
Speaker:Hyde.
Speaker:I give you my hand upon that.
Speaker:And I thank you again and again.
Speaker:And I will just add one little word, Utterson, that I'm sure you'll take in good part.
Speaker:This is a private matter, and I beg of you to let it sleep.
Speaker:Utterson reflected a little looking in the fire.
Speaker:I have no doubt you're perfectly right.
Speaker:He said at last, getting to his feet.
Speaker:Well.
Speaker:But since we've touched upon this business, and for the last time, I hope, continued the doctor, there's one point I should like you to understand.
Speaker:I have really a very great interest in poor Hyde.
Speaker:I know you've seen him.
Speaker:He told me so, and I fear he was rude.
Speaker:But I do sincerely take a great a very great interest in that young man.
Speaker:And if I'm taken away Utterson, I wish you to promise me that you will bear with him and get his rights for him.
Speaker:I think you would if you knew all, and it would be a weight off my mind if you would promise I can't pretend that I shall ever like him, said the lawyer.
Speaker:I don't ask that, pleaded Jekyll laying.
Speaker:His hand upon the other's arm.
Speaker:I only ask for justice.
Speaker:I only ask you to help him.
Speaker:For my sake when I'm no longer here.
Speaker:Utterson heaved an irrepressible sigh.
Speaker:Well, said he, I promise.
Speaker:Thank you for joining Bite at a.
