Most ambitious people think stress means they're getting closer to success. But stress is not evidence that you're on the path to success. It's actually evidence that you're interfering with it. Because your job is not to force your dream or your goals into existence. Your job is to build a nervous system resilient enough to hold the vision without collapsing into fear, overthinking, and resistance. See, the highest performers in the world. They understand something most people never realize. Success is less about figuring out how to create the result that you want and more about stopping the patterns that are preventing it from happening already. So in this episode, I'm going to show you the counterintuitive shift that allows people to create more by forcing less. So let's get into it.
Welcome to a Changed Mind, a journey into the topics that matter to you most. From the neuroscience and spirituality of mindset and personal growth, to groundbreaking strategies for health, wealth, and relationships, to open and honest conversations about pressing global issues such as the environment, censorship, corporate capture, and democracy. Each and every episode reminds us of the certainty of the goodness of the future and provides the teachings, tools, and timeless wisdom inspiring you to create real, lasting change in your life and in the world. If you've been desiring a sanctuary for your spirit, a place to go to tune out the distraction, negativity, and doom and gloom so that you can tap into the deep power, the vibrancy, and the potential you have inside, you're in the right place. Welcome to a Changed mind.
All right, guys, you've probably seen the videos out there about achieving more by doing less. And I'm going to explain this in a way that, frankly, when I learned about this, it blew my mind. Now, I'm not saying take naps and manifest. That's not what this is about. What I'm saying is most people think that the way to achieve big goals, a dream, to be ambitious, is to actually figure out how to achieve the thing and then to hustle and grind your way to it. And they're absolutely wrong. So the counterintuitive truth is this. The thing that you desire is already trying to emerge, but you're disrupting the process. So I'm gonna teach you three unbelievably powerful distinctions that will allow you to get out of the way of your goal as it's trying to materialize itself. Okay, now let's start by looking at the current hustle culture that we've been indoctrinated into. Because most people, especially high performers, ambitious people, people who have goals and dreams, they believe that stress and success go hand in hand. You know, I recently spoke at an event with around 207, eight nine figure entrepreneurs, and the host asked me to address this because she said, most of the people in this community are successful on paper, but they're taking their health, their relationships, their spirituality to the sacrificial altar of success. So the belief that you have to hustle and grind is completely unnatural. Now, I'm going to throw this one at you right at the beginning here. Stick with me. I don't care who you think he was, but Jesus said, my yoke is easy, my burden is light. See, he didn't come and his ministry was not. If you want to experience the kingdom of heaven here on earth, my yoke is brutal. Wake up at 5am at work, everyone. And as much as I appreciate a lot of the hustle culture that's out there and what it's doing for people, it's not sustainable. You know, I remember watching this interview with Alex Hormozi right after he did his hundred million dollar launch. And I like a lot of what Alex Hormozi puts out there. This is not a criticism of Alex Hormozi. We have different philosophies. I remember him bragging about sleeping three and a half hours a night, four and a half hours a night, 4 hours a night, 5 hours a night, 3 hours a night. That doesn't sound easy to me. And I'm not interested in sacrificing my sleep and ultimately my wellbeing for the things that I want to achieve. And I don't believe that I exist in a reality with a higher power that requires that of me. I'm going to go with Jesus on this one over Alex Hormozi. Is everybody okay with that? Now, that's not to say that you don't take action. And so here's what we're going to really unpack in today's episode is like, when do you take action? When do you not take action? How do you have a goal so big, like civilization, scale, impact, a big goal or something that's generally generationally transformative for you? Like, my family's always been broke. I'm gonna be worth a hundred million dollars and do it in a way that is not hustle and grind. Cause what I'm suggesting is that if you're stressed, you're not on your way to your goal, you're actually getting in the way of it. Okay, now this goes back to a distinction that I teach that chatgpt affectionately Called recently the golden equation. And I really think it is the golden equation and that is this. You can write it down. Desire plus non resistance equals desired result. If you're a fan of this show, you're probably tired of me talking about it, but I'm telling you, if you can just get this, you'll achieve your full potential and you'll do it in a way that allows you to enjoy life and be present for life rather than sacrifice existence for the outcome. What the equation says is if you have a desire, like you want to have a successful business, you want to discover your purpose in life, you want to have an amazing soulmate relationship, you want to recover your health, you want to make a lot of money, that's the desire. And the way to actually produce the desired result is through non resistance. What do I mean by that? I mean that usually when we have a goal or a dream or a vision or a desire, after a very short period of time, we move into an adversarial relationship with it because we start perceiving it within the context of but I'm not as far along as I should be, or I'm not good enough, or I'm afraid to be seen, or you can't trust people, or there's not enough time, or there's not enough money. Like we receive a glimpse of our future because that's what your dream is. You are a prophet, you're prophetic. The prophets could see the future. You're seeing the future in what you desire. It is an absolute possibility and you can create it. But immediately the mind will hijack it and it'll start to look at all of your core programs, your childhood belief systems and view it through that lens. And so that dream now triggers you, it triggers your nervous system and you start to move into some form of resistance. But what I'm saying is that if you can do the inner work, if you can build a nervous system so resilient that it can hold the dreams and the vision that you have without you moving into non resistance, the natural byproduct of that is the result. And that's not some sort of new age woo woo. That's understanding behavioral psychology. It's understanding neuroscience. Your beliefs determine what you think on a moment by moment basis. And your thoughts immediately translate into emotions that you feel in your nervous system. And those emotions immediately determine what action you do or do not take. And that action stacked up over time produces a result. Like your brain is a goal achieving machine and it can produce anything. But what happens is when you've got resistance, that's an indication of a limiting belief. And now the whole thing gets thrown out of whack. Because if you believe that money is hard to make, now all of a sudden that becomes your reality and so you can produce the result, but you got to sacrifice your life to do it. If you believe that there's just not enough time, then that's going to be your reality. You're always going to be stressed and overwhelmed on your way to achieving your goals. What's so interesting about what I just described, the beliefs create thoughts, thoughts create emotions, emotions create results, or actions and actions produce results, is that if you actually look at the result, you'll conclude the same thing which was the belief that started it in the first place. Oh see, I'm not good enough. Oh see, I don't know how to do things right. Oh see, success is for other people, but not for me. Like those core programs that you had as a kid, they'll replicate themselves into your life. Your reality is a mirror. And so if you want to produce a result that is desired, then the key is to be non resistant to the result that you want. Desire plus non resistance equals desired result. Now I get this whole hustle culture thing because I lived in it for so long. That's what drove me in many ways into my alcoholism, my drug addiction, my sex addiction. That's why, you know, a little over a decade ago I had, I was running a venture backed technology company. I'd raised $4 million, but I had two homes in foreclosure, I had a bunch of credit card debt, I had no money in my bank account. And the investors even enrolled me into this idea. They were like, look, we're giving you our money, but you're not going to have a personal life. You're going to, you're going to work hard, you're going to work ridiculous hours because you need to create a return on investment for the money that we're giving you. Because they didn't understand how it worked. So I've been there. Ambitious people think that their job is to figure out how to get from point A to point B, to design a plan and then to just crush and bulldoze everything that is in between. And social media reinforces it with a bunch of dudes who are former Navy Seals waking up at 5am trying to tell you that that's the way. But that's not the way. That's never been your job. Your job is to receive the vision, to have goals and have Dreams and to stay in non resistance. So what are we talking about here? And this is distinction number one. It's what I describe as hold the container. Your job is to have big dreams and big goals, but to hold that possibility as it goes from possibility into reality for you without collapsing into some form of resistance. To be able to have a dream so big, but to allow it to coexist with you and maintain a powerful state, to maintain the parasympathetic expression of your nervous system. To refuse to hurry, to refuse to hustle, to refuse to move into any kind of doubt or fear. If you do that, that idea will work itself through you and you in cooperation with reality itself will co create the desired result. And so what does this mean? Does this mean we don't take action? No, of course you take action. But what it means is you don't get out ahead of yourselves and you don't actually put resistance in the way. So just notice, I want you to think about something that you've been wanting for a long time. It might be to be in better shape, it might be something around your relationship, it might be to have more money. And I want you to just notice like clearly you have a desire, got a glimpse of what your future may hold for you. But how much time do you spend holding that desire from a place of non resistance versus having an inner dialogue around why it hasn't happened yet? Most people are having a lot of conversations around why it hasn't happened yet. Even high performers who are working on their goals. And I know because I coach some really extraordinary performers in the world, from professional athletes to entrepreneurs who run in billion dollar companies. Most of the time the vision they have is coexisting with a bunch of resistance. In particular, there's not enough time and I'm not as far along as I should be. So the work here is to develop nervous system resiliency. To be able to have a big vision, like I have a very big vision. To have a civilization changing vision and to not collapse into it. That's what real strength is, that's what real courage is. That's what real resiliency and high performance is, is to be able to allow that vision and not allow your limiting beliefs to start to take over. Well, a lot of people say, okay Dave, you're saying just hold the container, that all I need to do, like I don't need to take any action, I just sit on the sofa and my stuff shows up. No, that's not what I'm talking about. What I'M talking about is allow the thoughts and ideas to come be in your inspiration, but don't believe your ego when it starts to kick in along the way and tell you that you're not doing a good enough job. When it starts to scare you that you're not making the right decisions, when it starts to try to convince you that you should be further along, that's a collapsing of your nervous system. And you cannot create what you want. You cannot materialize this extraordinary vision from a primal state. So distinction number one is your job, again, is not to figure it out and hustle and grind. Your job is to receive the vision that you have, the goal, the dream. It could be something as simple as losing weight. It could be something as big as transforming education. To be able to hold that without starting to judge yourself, without starting to judge life. That allows the idea itself to start to work through you and around you. Hold the container. That's your job. So a lot of people say, but I don't know how to prioritize like what I should be working on. So I'm gonna give you distinction number two. Distinction number two is the present moment is the priority. So you have a vision and you're holding it without collapsing into it. And now you go, well, what should I do? And it's like, well, what's showing up in the present moment? Because all that really exists is the present moment. Like, the idea of the future is you just thinking about some point in time that doesn't exist. The idea of the past is you thinking about some point in time that doesn't exist. And all you have is the present moment. And so we spend a lot of time worrying about the future, but scheming, playing, I don't know what, 5D chess. Meanwhile, life is in the process of prioritizing what you should work on, and it's doing that through the present moment. Sometimes what you should be working on is a thought that you have in the present moment, not as you're trying to figure out and you are in resistance how to get from A to B. But as you're receiving priorities from the vision in the present moment. You have a thought, you pursue it. An opportunity shows up, you take the action to leverage it. A difficult conversation or a problem shows up. You work through it. Life will bring from your future whatever's appropriate for you to be working on based on a priority into the present moment. All you need to work with is what shows up in the present moment. So I'll give you an example as part of what we're building as an organization with whole human and the whole ecosystem, as we move more and more people into this work and start creating alternative products and services and systems and structures that are based in consciousness. I had the idea of creating a cryptocurrency, a utility token that would give people access to all kinds of amazing things related to the development of their consciousness, related to conscious business, that would bring the community together, that would serve as an economic facilitator across the network that I envision. I know nothing about cryptocurrencies. Frankly, they've sort of turned me off with all the stuff that's been going on. But I had this idea, and I told my wife, like, three years ago, babe, I think we're going to, like, create a. A currency. I don't know what it is, but I had a vision. I was getting a glimpse of the future. Well, rather than try to figure out what to do with that, I just held it. I held the container. I allowed it to exist without the tendency that I used to have to try to figure it out or feel like I needed to do it or hurry up, because once there's a lot of cryptocurrencies out there, then it's going to become too saturated in the market. Or what about the legislation or the regulation? I need to hurry, and I'm behind schedule on when I need to do it, and all the bullshit, I just held it. Well, I go to my 12 step meetings, and I end up developing a friendship with a guy there, and he's going through some hard times. And so we end up grabbing coffee after the 12 step meeting, and we start doing this every week. And he gets to know my business. And finally he says, hey, there's a guy I want you to meet. You need to meet Jose. I'm like, okay, cool. What's Jose do? He's like, jose's an investor. Jose's a serial entrepreneur. Jose does a lot of philanthropic work. You need to meet Jose. I said, okay, fine. So turns out Jose's coming to Puerto Rico, where I live. A month later, I organized to get together with Jose. So Jose and I sit down for lunch and I say, hey, Jose, like, what is it you do? What are you really passionate about? He says, dave, I help companies who are doing really good work in the world leverage cryptocurrencies and create utility tokens that have massive benefit for their members and their organization, but that also start to become a unit of transaction across new ecosystems as people are starting to build new ways of doing Business, it showed up. So that's what was in the present moment. Now so I work with it, but I got 101 different things to do. So ambitious people go like Dave, I got this big vision, but I'm overwhelmed by the vision that's collapsing into the container and I don't know what to work on first. And the answer is, well, whatever starts showing up for you in your present moment, life will prioritize for you. Sometimes it's an opportunity that shows up. Pursue it. Sometimes it's a thought that shows up. Follow it. Sometimes somebody wants you to go speak somewhere and you're afraid because now you have to build a presentation or overcome your fear of public speaking, say yes anyway. Life will organize and prioritize everything for you if you stop trying to do its job. But you cannot be present to receiving the proper prioritization of your vision if you're constantly trying to figure out what you need to do next and hustle and grinding your way to it. So when you're in non resistance and you understand that the present moment will prioritize itself for you, what you're now doing is you're pulling the, the results into your present moment. You're not trying to get from here to there. You're living in a way that allows here to transform. Okay? And this is the way the field works. This is field theory. This is the system of reality. This is how coincidence and synchronicity works. Life is working all the time for your greatest growth, your greatest prosperity and your greatest evolution. Like, you have a vision and 99% of the heavy lifting is actually done for you. And think about it, if you really look at anything that you would lay claim to as a great achievement of yours, wasn't 99.9% of it work that was done outside of you. You know, like I think about, you know, our show now has two and a half to three million listeners a month, which, thank you, is unbelievable. And so someone could say like, well, how did you produce the result? And I could say, well, I recorded an episode every single week for, for 18 months, even though nobody was listening. And then all of a sudden, because I stuck to it and I was disciplined, the algorithm started picking up my show and I started getting a lot of listeners on YouTube. And now it's grown ever since. Okay, that's one way of looking at it. But like, if I am reality or the universe or God or higher power, I'm going, well, you sort of forgot about a little thing called me. I created YouTube. I gave you, all the ideas that you talked about, I gave you the financial resources to buy your home studio equipment. Like I gave you this, I gave you that, I did all the things I created Spotify and Apple said the universe. And you just wrote on my back, Dave, and you're trying to take credit for it. So if you actually look at how anything meaningful in your life was achieved, most of it was done outside of you. It was coincidence, it was synchronicity, it was thoughts. And again, it depends on what you want to take credit for, what you want to attribute to reality. But I think it's healthy to go like, my thoughts aren't even my thoughts, you know, those are all gifts from a higher power. My job, your job is called the last mile, right? It's like take a little bit of action, relatively speaking, to produce the result. And my suggestion is, is that you'll be effective in taking that action when you're operating from non resistance. Desire plus non resistance equals desired result. And so what's your job? Step one, receive the vision and hold the container. Don't allow it to trigger all of your old resistance. What do I work on, Dave? Well, step two, work on whatever's showing up in the present moment. Doesn't that seem to be logical? Let that be your prioritization. And part three, and really what we're saying here is step into being your future self. Now you may have heard me talk about this on other episodes. I did a few episodes completely dedicated to future self. But start acting, thinking, being as if you were the person who already achieved the outcome and you're just waiting for the realization of it. Like you know that because you received the vision, it's inevitable that at some point in time you meet that point on your timeline called your future and enjoy your way to it. If, for example, you were already in financial security, how would you be thinking differently? Feeling differently, Acting differently. Well, act like that person now. Act like that person now, which is the non resistant version of you, because think about it and it's just logical. If you were to think like an alcoholic, feel like an alcoholic and do like an alcoholic, wouldn't you become an alcoholic? Yeah, but if you were to think like a millionaire, feel like a millionaire and act like a millionaire, given a certain amount of time, wouldn't it be inevitable that you'd become a millionaire? And so what we're saying here is start assuming, or as the great mystic Neville Goddard would talked about in his law of assumption, acting as if what you want is already done. Because what I'm saying is it is already done. You're not making up the goal or the dream that excites you. You're getting a glimpse into your future. That's prophecy. So now start acting as the person who already has it. The person who already has it is able to hold that container. The person who already has it is not trying to figure out how to get from here to there and stressing out about it and being overwhelmed by the big goal and big vision that they have. They would just be enjoying as life started to prioritize into their present moment. That's what being your future self now is. So one version of what we're talking about, the traditional hustle and grind and achieving your goals creates stress. The other creates flow. Like one pushes the dream away, that's what most people are doing. The other pulls it in so you don't have to choose between ambition and peace in your life. That's the old math. The new math is dream big, hold the vision and effectively do almost nothing except what life is asking of you in the present moment. So if there's one thing I want you to take from today, it's this. You don't achieve your dreams by working harder. You achieve them by by holding the vision from non resistance and saying yes to what life brings into your present moment. That's it. That's the whole game. Stop trying to get from here to there because there is no there. There's only here. And the dream comes to you through the present moment. One inspiration, one opportunity, one yes at a time. So the real question isn't how do I push my way to get to my dream? The real question is, can I get out of my own way long enough to let the dream come to me? So I hope you enjoyed this episode as much as I loved sharing it with you. One or two asks from me.
