Speaker A:
Hey, this is your host, Vinayak.
Speaker A:
And welcome to the Sustainable side Hustle podcast.
Speaker A:
Today I've got Jill Hart with me.
Speaker A:
Also known as the Coaches Alchemist.
Speaker A:
She has hosted the you World Order Showcase podcast for over 600 episodes and generating more than 1.1 million downloads.
Speaker A:
And now helps coaches and spiritual entrepreneurs build a real business before they ever worry about growing an audience.
Speaker A:
Let's get right into it really.
Speaker B:
You need to start with a pen and paper and you need to decide how is this going to look overall?
Speaker B:
What is my big plan?
Speaker B:
If you opened a store, a brick and mortar store, you wouldn't just open the store and then go in there and decide, oh, I think I'm going to put this on the shelf and, and you have a broken down cup, it's got lots of chips in it.
Speaker B:
You stick it up on the shelf and, and then you look around and you're like, I wish somebody would come in and buy my broken chipped cup.
Speaker B:
Yeah, maybe there's an audience for your broken chipped cup, but they're not going to just stumble on you.
Speaker B:
If you don't have a direct path from getting to know you to actually giving you money, then you're just sending noise out into the universe.
Speaker B:
Then the question is, what is your model?
Speaker B:
Do you want to do substack?
Speaker B:
Do you want to just do school?
Speaker B:
I think honestly school is harder because there isn't really a built in audience.
Speaker B:
Substack is probably easier if you set it up right.
Speaker B:
You do need to show up every week and deliver what you promised.
Speaker B:
It's having good calls to action and having a good clear path when they get to your publication and knowing what they're coming there for.
Speaker B:
And I, I did for a while subscribe to a lot of people, but you quickly learn that that's not a good idea cause it just overwhelms your email box.
Speaker A:
What do you wish someone had told you when you were starting out?
Speaker B:
I don't know.
Speaker B:
I had people tell me things and it, it wasn't very good advice and I, I did a lot of different things.
Speaker B:
Mostly they ended up being sales related, but they were like.
Speaker B:
I got into truck driving because I was recruiting truck drivers and I always wanted to drive a truck.
Speaker B:
So my husband and I drove a truck for a year and I sold liners for cargo containers.
Speaker B:
I've sold real estate, I had a real estate license and I've sold mortgages and I know how to put mortgages together and sell them the secondary market.
Speaker B:
And I mean, I've done A lot of really random things.
Speaker B:
I was a bookkeeper for a while.
Speaker B:
So it's not like one straight line for Jill.
Speaker B:
It's just.
Speaker B:
So when you talk about what, what do you wish someone had told you?
Speaker B:
I don't know, that it's all going to be okay, that it'll all work out.
Speaker B:
You can be multi passionate and still be able to be focused and have a plan and implement the plan and stick it out beyond stick it out for a year.
Speaker B:
The rule of ones I think was the thing that I, I learned later in life but is the most probably important thing I've heard and that it's just pick one thing, focus on it, do your marketing on it for a year, give it time so you can gather data, so you can figure out what's working and what's not working on it.
Speaker B:
Don't keep.
Speaker B:
Try substack for five minutes and then try medium for five minutes and then try Patreon for five minutes and then try school for five minutes.
Speaker B:
Oh, didn't work.
Speaker B:
Oh yeah.
Speaker B:
Doesn't work.
Speaker B:
You have to figure it out because each platform has its own way that it wants to be put together.
Speaker A:
If you were, if you lost everything that you had tomorrow, what would your first 30 day look like trying to rebuild all it up?
Speaker B:
You never start from zero for one thing.
Speaker B:
You always have the information that you've gathered your whole life to bring to the the equation.
Speaker B:
And I decided to go all in on substack.
Speaker B:
If I were going to start over, I would go all in on substack and I would build a community around something I was really passionate about that I knew a lot about, that had a lot of stories about and I would connect a shop to it, a store so they could buy actual merchandise.
Speaker B:
So I created the hobo homesteading substack.
Speaker B:
It's all about my life on the homestead with my llama Larry.
Speaker B:
Larry, the Larry leaping llama.
Speaker B:
And I have merchandise and I make artisan bread, sourdough bread and my sourdough is named Fred.
Speaker B:
I mean these are real life things that I, I have but it's around the idea that homesteading is a, is a state of mind.
Speaker B:
It's not 40 acres in the million dollar house.
Speaker B:
And it's helping people to realize that they homesteading is.
Speaker B:
You can homestead in an apartment.
Speaker B:
It doesn't matter where you are, it matters what you think and about trying to create a life that you love to live.
Speaker A:
So that was just a trailer.
Speaker A:
But we are about to get into the real specifics of how Jill actually builds this out the exact foundations before you ever grow an audience.
Speaker A:
If you are trying to get visible without needing a huge following, you probably don't want to miss this one.
