Transcripts

00:00:06 Saima: We hear affirmations everywhere. Say the words, repeat the phrase, believe the outcome. But for a lot of people, it does not land that way. The words sound good, yet something inside still resist. So maybe the real question is not whether permission to work. Maybe it is what has to be in place for them to become something we can actually leave.

00:00:28 Saima: Welcome to Mind Over Matter, the space where we explore resilience, inner strength, and the deeper patterns that shape how we heal and grow. I'm Simon, and today I am joined by our illuminating guest, Jeremy Green, a transformation coach and wellness facilitator whose work blends identity, nervous system healing, and practical inner change. We are talking about affirmations and more importantly, the three things that make them real instead of just repetitive. So if you have ever felt frustrated saying all the right things and still feeling stuck, This conversation is for you. So, Jamie, welcome to the show.

00:01:10 Jamie Green: Yes. Thank you. Thank you so much for having me.

00:01:13 Saima: You're warmly welcome, Jamie. So, Jamie, When someone says, I have tried affirmations, but they, you know, they just feel it's not working for them. Or maybe, you know, sometimes they feel it's fake. So what does that tell you about where they might be emotionally or internally?

00:01:32 Jamie Green: Yeah, that's a very common scenario where people have explored affirmations and hoping that, let's say the common thirty day, you know, challenge that after the thirty days, I will feel confident or I will feel good enough. And when day thirty one comes along, they're questioning and wondering, well, I did everything that I was supposed to do. I repeated the affirmations the morning, you know, the evening and night time. But I still don't truly feel good enough. And that's the thing that brings insight into how affirmations work and what to utilize to strengthen and really embody them. And that's the feeling. So let's say if someone's working towards building a inner belief of I am good enough. If they currently have a inner battle or an inner belief that goes against that. When they state that affirmation, the body is going to send a signal to the mind saying, hey, I hear you saying this affirmation, but I know deep down this isn't how we really feel, right? And so there's going to be a inner working and signaling to the mind that even though we want to believe this right now, that's not true. and it'll show a feeling and it'll reject the affirmation.

00:03:10 Saima: that's a really important point. Jamie, like, what you're describing shows that many people might be saying the words, but they're not actually feeling the connection to them yet. And I feel that gap between the words and the feeling can be frustrating for people because they assume affirmations should work instantly. And I appreciate how you're highlighting that the emotional experience behind the words really matters. Like it's not just about repeating a phrase, it's about how it lands internally. And that insight helps people realize there's nothing wrong with them if it doesn't click right away. Right?

00:03:47 Jamie Green: Exactly, Exactly. And if it does not work after the thirty day challenge or whatever duration that you the goal and commitment that you set for yourself, that's when you have to begin to explore other ways to find out what's the other story playing in the background. If I want to feel worthy and I want to feel good enough, but there's some type of inner tension going on you. You owe it to yourself to explore, to find out, well, what is it that I believe right now that's stopping me from accepting this belief, this new and empowering belief? And when you uncover the other belief that's underneath of it, that's when you're able to start changing the way you utilize affirmations. And so perhaps it may not be like the final goal as I'm good enough or I'm worthy. It would be baby steps. So I may not feel as though that I'm good enough or worthy right now. But today I can affirm that I am taking daily steps and commitments to grow and expand. Or I am strong and I am capable. So sometimes our affirmations aren't always grand and goal beliefs. They can be intermittent beliefs that help reinforce and rebuild that foundation, so that we can truly work up to the belief of being good enough and worthy.

00:05:25 Speaker 3: Mhm. Mhm.

00:05:27 Saima: Yes. I think a lot of people assume affirmations have to be this big dramatic statements, but what you're pointing out is that they don't always need to be grand or overwhelming. And yeah, that approach makes the practice feel much more human and accessible rather than forced. Yes. Now I'm curious to build on that a little more. Like from your perspective, what is the biggest misconception people tend to have about affirmations?

00:05:54 Jamie Green: Yeah, I would say that, um, in regards to their affirmations journey, they feel as though that once they get to the end, that there's going to be like a transformation overnight. And affirmations is like nourishing the soul and those daily commitment phrases that you're utilizing and hoping to embody. Those are the seeds that you're planting in the soil. And the more repetition, the more you infuse your body of how you want to see yourself, how you want to feel as you begin to embody these empowering beliefs, that's going to be the nutrients in the water that you're planting on the seeds.

00:06:42 Speaker 3: Mhm, mhm.

00:06:43 Saima: Absolutely. That makes sense. And that's such an important clarification to me. Jimmy, I think, you know, a lot of people approach affirmations almost like a quick fix, as if repeating a few phrases for a while will suddenly create an overnight transformation. But what you are highlighting is that real inner change usually happens much more gradually, and it's a process of gently shifting the way we think and speak to ourselves over time rather than, you know, expecting one instant breakthrough. And that perspective can really help people approach affirmations with like much more air passage and self-compassion. So building on that, when affirmations actually start working in a healthy way, what does that process actually, you know, really look like?

00:07:31 Jamie Green: Yeah, exactly what you said. Um, embodying more compassion, more curiosity to expand and to create that version of you that truly embodies those beliefs. Because when we initially start our affirmation journey, we're at a different point in our timeline. And as we move into our future, we're transforming and transcending into a new version of ourselves.

00:08:01 Speaker 3: Mhm.

00:08:02 Saima: That's remarkable. And the way you explain that, I really love that you brought the focus back to compassion. You know, that's such a powerful shift because many people approach personal growth from a place of criticism, constantly telling themselves they're not doing enough or not changing fast enough. But what you are describing, Jaime, is almost the opposite. Affirmations slowly helping someone soften the way they speak to themselves and creating a little more kindness internally. And that kind of self-compassion can be incredibly healing.

00:08:36 Jamie Green: Exactly.

00:08:39 Speaker 3: Mhm, mhm.

00:08:40 Saima: So like when someone begins to develop that self-compassion through affirmations, how does it start to affect, you know, other areas of their life, like their relationships, confidence or the way they handle challenges?

00:08:55 Jamie Green: Yeah. So when you begin to embody more compassion for yourself, you're able to extend that out to your friends and your family when perhaps they may go, they may be experiencing a challenge and maybe overwhelmed. And sometimes there may be a little push and pull in regards to our relationships because one person is overwhelmed. And when we experience self-compassion for ourselves, we're able to extend that to our family and our friends and really strengthen that relationship of understanding and empathy.

00:09:38 Speaker 3: Mhm. Mhm.

00:09:39 Saima: I agree with that. I agree with what you said. And that's really a beautiful point. When someone begins to develop compassion for themselves. It naturally starts to extend outward the way we, like we said, we treat ourselves. You know, often becomes the blueprint for how we treat the people around us. So when that I feel, you know, when that inner dialogue becomes kinder and more supportive, it can naturally transform relationships as well with friends, like I said, and family. And, you know, even in how we show up in everyday interactions and that ripple effect is really powerful. So as we enter this for someone listening right now who wants to start working with affirmations in a way that truly supports healing rather than feeling forced or superficial, where would you suggest they would begin?

00:10:31 Jamie Green: Yeah, that is such a great question. For those that are ready to explore, how you can truly supercharge affirmations is by first setting an intention. What is it that you truly hope to receive from practicing these affirmations. What would you like to experience and what type of transformation would you like? As you start to embody these inner beliefs, and once they've identified that, then we begin to work on, well, what does it look like? What does it feel like? And how do you hope for these beliefs to start to transform your actions moving forward? And from there, you begin to address the affirmation that's going to help you embody and create those things in your life. So, for example, the belief I am worthy. You to supercharge your affirmation, you want to create an image of your mind. What does. the version of me look like when I feel as though I am worthy? What do I feel? What do I see? What am I experiencing? And allow yourself to truly envision that image or that movie of you walking and living and embodying that affirmation. And what this does, it connects the affirmation to the subconscious mind, which is the part of our minds that control all of our beliefs, our thoughts, our habits, and our actions. It is the powerhouse of our mind. So when we create this image, we're storing this new belief in a way that our subconscious mind can process it. And so that new and empowered belief begins to take root. And doing it this way, when we're connecting it to our senses, we're able to truly embody the experience. So instead of making the statement and feeling the opposite, we make the affirmation statement and we embody how we want to feel. We feel it deeply in our body, in our heart. We allow the process, and because we're connecting to all of our senses, we're really strengthening and embodying those neural pathways to create the inner belief.

00:13:27 Speaker 3: Mhm.

00:13:28 Saima: I really appreciate the way you described that process, Jeremy. Like you said, the idea of first identifying the belief and then creating a clear image in your mind of what that belief looks like in real life is so powerful. I feel that it moves affirmations beyond just repeating words and helps people actually experience the feeling of that belief. And like you said, when someone allows themselves to envision that version of, you know who they are becoming, it helps the formation connects, you know, connect much more deeply with the subconscious mind. And I feel that makes, you know, that makes the practice feel much more authentic and personal. So at the same time, the reality is that some days the old voice comes back strong, the doubt shows up again, the fear shows up again. So in those moments, people can feel like they're right back at the beginning. So how can someone stay committed to the practice during those times without feeling discouraged or thinking they have lost their progress?

00:14:29 Jamie Green: Exactly. Um, in those moments, giving yourself compassion, knowing that as a human being, we live in a life that is fluid. There's an ebb and flow. Some days we're going to have easy days. Some days is going to be more challenging. And just giving yourself that love and compassion that you need in that moment, and accepting that I may not be feeling empowered enough to state the big grand affirmation, but I can at least say that I'm here for myself today, and this is what I am setting my intention and committing to.

00:15:09 Speaker 3: Mhm, mhm.

00:15:10 Saima: That's a beautiful reminder to me. And that's really an important reminder. In fact, I love that you brought the focus back to self-compassion because so often when people feel the old thoughts returning, they first reaction is to judge themselves or think they have failed. But what you are describing is, you know, a much healthier perspective, like recognizing that growth naturally has an ebb and flow and that those moments don't, you know, erase the progress someone has already made. And accepting that ups and downs are part of the journey can make, you know, make the practice feel much more sustainable and human. Right?

00:15:50 Jamie Green: Exactly.

00:15:55 Saima: And for, you know, listeners with what you shared today, you know, what message would you like to leave for them?

00:16:04 Jamie Green: Yeah. So no matter what personal empowerment journey you are on, know that where you focus your energy, your energy will grow. So if you focus on the things that you don't want to focus on, the problems, the challenges, the negative beliefs, your mind is going to continue to reinforce and to create a version of you that confirms those beliefs and feelings. And if you focus on the more empowered version of you to giving yourself compassion and moments of times that you need it during those challenges to embodying those beliefs and creating those empowering habits, then you'll know that it'll start becoming easier and easier as you create that new empowering path.

00:17:04 Saima: Absolutely. What you're highlighting is how much your attention shapes your internal experience. Like when we keep focusing on the things we don't want or the beliefs we are trying to move away from those patterns can, you know, keep repeating. But when someone gently begin shifting their focus toward what they want to believe or create, that's where real change can start to take place. And that's really a thoughtful point, Jamie.

00:17:30 Jamie Green: Yeah, exactly.

00:17:32 Speaker 3: Mhm.

00:17:33 Saima: I'm curious to explore that a little further. Like when someone begins intentionally shifting their focus like that, can you share some simple ways they can remind themselves throughout the day to come back to the belief they are trying to build?

00:17:48 Jamie Green: Yeah, some really great suggestions would be to write down positive affirmations or reminders for yourself throughout the day. They can be on little sticky notes. You can put them on your calendar as a daily reminder, such as maybe taking a mindfulness break, taking a breath to refocus that energy for what it is that you want to create versus what you don't want to create. Just creating more creative ways to reinforce those beliefs and habits.

00:18:23 Speaker 3: Mhm, mhm.

00:18:24 Saima: Oh, that's a beautiful reminder. That's a beautiful reminder. And, you know, I really like how simple and practical that is. Like writing positive reminders gives people something tangible, you know, they can come back during the day. I do feel like it's almost like leaving small signals for the mind to pause, reset, and reconnect with the beliefs they are trying to build. And those little reminders can gently interrupt the old patterns and, you know, help reinforce a new, healthier inner dialogue over time, isn't it?

00:18:58 Jamie Green: Yeah, exactly.

00:19:01 Saima: So before we wrap up, I'd love to ask one last question for listeners who resonated with what you shared today and would like to learn more about your work or connect with you? Where can they find you?

00:19:13 Jamie Green: Yeah, they can find me at sun.shine. So vibes. And that's my website to keep abreast of any events that I'm having as well. On Instagram sun.shine. So vibes and on LinkedIn under Jamie Green.

00:19:29 Saima: That's surely going to be beneficial for all our listeners out there. Jamie, thank you for joining us on Mind Over Matter and listeners, if this conversation stayed with you, let it stay gently. Maybe take one information from today and ask yourself, not just can I say this, but how can I start leaving one small piece of it? Until next time, take care of your mind. Be patient with your becoming and keep choosing what helps you come home to yourself.
