Passage

ESV (English Standard Version):

"And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?"

NLT (New Living Translation):

"Here are some of the parts God has appointed for the church: first are apostles, second are prophets, third are teachers, then those who do miracles, those who have the gift of healing, those who can help others, those who have the gift of leadership, those who speak in unknown languages. Are we all apostles? Are we all prophets? Are we all teachers? Do we all have the power to do miracles?"

NIV (New International Version):

"And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?"

  2. Pray for the church to be receptive to the pioneering work of the apostles and support their ventures.

Transcripts

Speaker:

This is journey with prayer, a contemplated prayer journey

Speaker:

corresponding to our episode, Leading Differently Together,

Speaker:

Apostolic, with our guest Donovan Friesen.

Speaker:

And god is appointed in the church first apostles,

Speaker:

second prophets, 3rd teachers, then miracles,

Speaker:

then gifts of healing, helping, administration, and

Speaker:

various kinds of tongues. First Corinthians 12

Speaker:

28 to 29 in the ESV.

Speaker:

Father, in the vast expanse of your church, you

Speaker:

have raised up apostles, those with gifts to

Speaker:

lead, to plant, and to build, and to expand the

Speaker:

horizons of your kingdom.

Speaker:

We stand here in awe of your wisdom that in each generation,

Speaker:

you call forth men and women to be the carriers of your

Speaker:

vision, the architects of faith communities, and the catalysts

Speaker:

for transformation. And we thank

Speaker:

you for the unique apostolic anointing placed upon your

Speaker:

servants. We're thankful for their obedience and for

Speaker:

their vision and for their readiness to forge pathways in

Speaker:

uncharted territories for the sake of the gospel.

Speaker:

And we ask that you would pour on them your abundance of grace

Speaker:

that they may continue to lay foundations where none

Speaker:

exist, speaking into being that which we cannot

Speaker:

see and reflects your kingdom.

Speaker:

And we know that we are all broken people, So we ask for

Speaker:

protection and that you would build them up and surround

Speaker:

them with people to encourage them, uphold them, and strengthen

Speaker:

them as they lead the way. And we

Speaker:

ask that you would knit together the body of Christ

Speaker:

more tightly in love, wisdom, and understanding.

Speaker:

And help us to recognize and esteem the variety of gifts

Speaker:

that you've distributed among us that we might collaborate

Speaker:

effectively honoring the contributions of everyone, of your

Speaker:

whole body. May we become a

Speaker:

living testament to your design, diverse in

Speaker:

function, and yet united in purpose, collectively

Speaker:

demonstrating the fullness of Christ?

Speaker:

And would you root us deeply in love, anchoring us firmly in the

Speaker:

truth of your word? And may we grow in every way

Speaker:

into him who is the head, Christ, from whom the whole

Speaker:

body joined and held together finds harmony and

Speaker:

growth. And we ask that you would empower

Speaker:

your apostles to walk boldly in their calling

Speaker:

and inspire each of us to embrace and support the

Speaker:

vibrant gifts within your church. In Jesus'

Speaker:

name,

Speaker:

amen. So as you go through your week, I wanna encourage you.

Speaker:

Take the time to reflect. Reflect on

Speaker:

the diversity of the roles in the church as stated in 1st Corinthians

Speaker:

12/28 to 29, and examine your personal

Speaker:

understanding of the apostolic gift and how it complements the

Speaker:

other gifts within the church. Secondly,

Speaker:

engage. Look for opportunities to engage and

Speaker:

learn from those who have the apostolic calling.

Speaker:

And if possible, initiate dialogue with them to understand their

Speaker:

vision and challenges and to explore how you might be a part of that

Speaker:

apostolic mission. And finally, pray.

Speaker:

Make prayer an intentional focus, and you can use these 3

Speaker:

prayer points. Pray for the discernment and the

Speaker:

empowerment of individuals with apostolic gifts in your community

Speaker:

that they may be effective and courageous in their unique callings.

Speaker:

And pray for the church that they might be receptive to the

Speaker:

pioneering work of the apostles, whether in church planting,

Speaker:

cross cultural missions, or innovative ministries,

Speaker:

and to support these ventures with resources, prayer, or a shared

Speaker:

vision. And finally, pray for your personal growth

Speaker:

that you might understand your role within the body of Christ.

Speaker:

Ask God to reveal how you can contribute to the apostolic efforts

Speaker:

in your own context. Perhaps it's through prayer, service,

Speaker:

or giving. And you could check the show notes for these references,

Speaker:

prayers, and scriptures. Or to find out more about the podcast, head over to

for praying with me today.
