Speaker:Then got to a point where I couldn't sleep and then I was trying to turn the
Speaker:wheel in in my car with my right arm and I was like, oh, fuck, that hurts.

Speaker:Time to get checked out.
Speaker:And as do you know, they've obviously gone in and fixed it
Speaker:now, like was it a big tear?
Speaker:Yeah, so it was, it was like a high grade tear, two thirds of
Speaker:the way through 12 centimeters.
Speaker:Any bicep stuff as well?

Speaker:But there, there was a spur on the bone that they have to like shave back as well.
Speaker:And when they asking is we had the same, we had the same surgeon.

Speaker:He would organize everything, you know, simple times.

Speaker:Like, and you were on site, boots on the ground, ordering

Speaker:You'd call a plumber and say, you know, Barry, can you get to this job?
Speaker:Monday, two weeks from now, he'd be like, yeah, no worries, mate.
Speaker:He'd go and he'd go there, he'd be there and he'd do the job.
Speaker:And if something was like a little bit different than what he quoted, he'd
Speaker:be like, yeah, it's all good, mate.
Speaker:You know, like, or swings and roundabouts out.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:You know, you'd just work it out between his, um, whereas yeah, being a
Speaker:builder now, man, there's so much admin, like, when I got into it, I didn't
Speaker:get into it to, to sit behind a desk.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Like I was just talking to Matt earlier and he's saying he loves
Speaker:being behind a desk and loves.

Speaker:Um, because you've been in industry for how long now?
Speaker:Oh, well I started my apprenticeship when I was 19, 18, sorry, 18 straight.
Speaker:Um, I actually went to RMIT.
Speaker:Um, doing building design and flunked everything.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:Um, and realized like, oh, I, I'm just doing this 'cause my dad wants
Speaker:me to go to, you know, university.
Speaker:And, um, eventually I actually had a design teacher named Andrew Rodder.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:And he used to come in there and, um, we'd have this design class.
Speaker:He'd give you a design brief and you'd have to draw, you
Speaker:know, something to the brief.
Speaker:Uh, and I draw it.
Speaker:And then when you draw it, you also had to present it in front of the class,
Speaker:like you present it to your client.
Speaker:One
Speaker:day, towards the end of the first semester, he sat me down and
Speaker:said, do you mind hanging back?
Speaker:I said, yeah.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:So we hang back and he goes, um, can I ask, like, what
Speaker:do you wanna do career wise?
Speaker:And I'm like, I don't really know.
Speaker:You know, like, he goes, do you want be an, like an architect?
Speaker:And I said, ah, I actually really wanted to be a builder.
Speaker:I said, but my dad wanted me to go to uni, so here I am.
Speaker:He goes, right.
Speaker:He goes, 'cause you can't draw.
Speaker:I'm like, yeah, I fucking know.
Speaker:He goes, but he goes, I feel compelled to pass you.
Speaker:He said, because every time you present the drawings, you
Speaker:present them with such conviction.
Speaker:I end up believing in the fucking design.
Speaker:So

Speaker:He said, so you've probably got something there, but maybe this isn't your path.
Speaker:I'm like, oh, thank you.
Speaker:And the fact that you
Speaker:remember this guy and he's had such a, like profound impact
Speaker:on your PA career direction.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Like I think you've got a lot to thank him for.
Speaker:I, yeah.
Speaker:I actually honest,
Speaker:I actually called him a couple years ago and thanked him, you know, and
Speaker:I said, you, you won't remember me.
Speaker:And you know, he, uh, because I know you, the guy appreciate,
Speaker:you're the guy that can't design.
Speaker:Yeah,
Speaker:yeah, yeah.
Speaker:He's like, I remember you.
Speaker:The, the one guy that came to my class, I couldn't draw.
Speaker:I guess I, I, you know, make a short story along we got.
Speaker:Got into building to be a trade, to be on site.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:To, to, to build houses and, and just make things and enjoy that process.
Speaker:But there's so much that goes on in the background now.
Speaker:Um, especially with compliance.
Speaker:It, it's, um, it, it just makes it really difficult if you're a, if
Speaker:you're a, a one man band, so to speak, and which I sort of am as a builder.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I don't have a business partner or Yeah.
Speaker:I didn't have like a full solid crew that, that offers support.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And, uh, yeah, that was, that was that.
Speaker:And then I guess COVID came through, which made it, uh, post COVID
Speaker:and the big build, which made it really difficult to get trades on
Speaker:site and, um, jobs just blew out.
Speaker:Um, I, I remember talking to your brother, um, during, just after COVID,
Speaker:maybe 22, 23, and he mentioned that you had just decided, I'm done with this.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Sort of single project resi stuff.
Speaker:Like it's too hard.
Speaker:Um, I think you even mentioned that you spent a couple of years
Speaker:working for nothing just to pay.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I was, I was, so what I was literally writing down then is one
Speaker:of his quotes that you've written.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:And it's, I'm gonna quote post COVID.
Speaker:I worked for two years straight to lose over a million dollars.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And, and that story as shit as it is, is not in isolation either.
Speaker:Like, I guarantee that there are dozens, if not hundreds
Speaker:of other builders out there.
Speaker:That would've been the same thing.
Speaker:Like I reckon we just broke even Yeah.
Speaker:Throughout COVID.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:And we're still stupid enough to be here right now as builders.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Um, like recent though, you're pretty pri prolific on social media.
Speaker:I think that's how we It's funny you're just talking hilarious.
Speaker:Like, I think I personally, from my side, I'm really engaged by
Speaker:it because it's so true to me.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Like probably my personality.
Speaker:We probably have, we were all cut from the same cloth of personality types here.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And you mentioned that you are really struggling with going in for this surgery
Speaker:because you're like, my whole identity is.
Speaker:Is, is being a carpenter, being, being on the tools with a team,
Speaker:and I'm really struggling.
Speaker:I'm, I'm really not looking forward to this next part of my life where I am
Speaker:literally forced to sit on the sidelines.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:How, how are you, how are you now?
Speaker:I mean, two days post, I know you're probably not thinking quite Yeah.
Speaker:Clearly with all the pain meds, but like, how are you viewing the next few weeks?
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:I'm trying to use it as an opportunity to bring the other guys up and, you
Speaker:know, give them a bit of rope and not be overbearing or controlling.
Speaker:I would always give them an opportunity, and then as soon as one
Speaker:little thing would go wrong, that would like vindicate me to say, no.

Speaker:Whereas now I don't really have a choice.

Speaker:you are learning from someone who's super passionate and I'm keen to know how you,
Speaker:like, do you, do you understand like the situation you're in and like how grateful

Speaker:Like, even before I worked at Ville, the way Joel actually got me to work for, for
Speaker:Ville originally, I was a bit skeptical on it 'cause I worked through my old boss.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Gave, look, you're not gonna learn anything else, anything
Speaker:like this anywhere else.
Speaker:And I was like, all right, how did you guys come, how did you do?
Speaker:Um, so Ben was actually on loan with me through a mate.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Uh, a mate was like a little bit quiet and so he was subbing, you know, Ben
Speaker:to me and one of his other chippies.
Speaker:Um, 'cause we were really flat out and, um, one day Ben actually came to
Speaker:site, and again, I'm not on the tools full time, but when I am, you know,
Speaker:I'm, I'm up to them about everything.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So Ben comes to site one day.
Speaker:You was sort of dragging his feet and little bit lackluster, you know,
Speaker:see it's classic apprentice trade at some point.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Oh, look, I, I, I think, I think everyone has those.
Speaker:It, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker:Dragged the feet.
Speaker:And I said to, I said to him, I said, listen man, I said, if you wanna
Speaker:be here, fucking pull your head in.
Speaker:You know, get, get your mind in the game and, and apply yourself.
Speaker:I said, 'cause we're doing dangerous shit all the time.
Speaker:And I don't want someone with me that's not got their head in the game.
Speaker:Like, if something falls, I want someone to watch my back as well.
Speaker:And, and I said to him, I said, yeah, either come here and you
Speaker:wanna learn and we'll teach you.
Speaker:I said, oh, don't bother.
Speaker:And honestly, after that it was like one chat and it was
Speaker:like a, a switch just flipped.
Speaker:And he's like 20 minutes early every day, buys shit, loads of
Speaker:tools, um, you know, actually invest in his career and you buy tools.
Speaker:We just get given them.
Speaker:Ben actually had to buy our vault.
Speaker:that was what happened.
Speaker:And then, you know, Ben was sort of thinking about leaving and this
Speaker:and that, and I ended up telling him, say, look man, you know, I
Speaker:don't put on apprentices anymore.
Speaker:I, I, you know, and he knew that.
Speaker:I said, but I'll put you on, 'cause I said, you, you've been really impressive.
Speaker:Like, you rock up early, you know, you do what's asked of you, you
Speaker:work back If we need, you know, you ask questions And then, um,
Speaker:is he got an old school attitude?
Speaker:Like does, I can don't wanna talk for a second, but you, do
Speaker:you know what I'm talking about?
Speaker:Like, when you were taught as an apprentice?
Speaker:Because I feel generations are sort of changed a little bit softer.

Speaker:He's not precious.

Speaker:He just does whatever needs to be done or what's asked of him.
Speaker:And within
Speaker:reason.
Speaker:And you'll speak up when he feels like he doesn't need to.

Speaker:I feel, I feel like you can give constructive.
Speaker:Very, um, clear feedback in a safe environment.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:It doesn't need to be yelling.
Speaker:It doesn't have to be yelling, like, but I still feel like we should, as
Speaker:business owners or teachers or lead carpenters or whatever, should be able
Speaker:to give feedback without, um, without prejudice and without feeling like
Speaker:there's gonna be a kickback from it.
Speaker:It's at their best interest,
Speaker:I feel like.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I feel like there is a little bit of that kind of treading on egg
Speaker:shell a little bit like it is.
Speaker:I used to just get fucking yelled at.
Speaker:Oh man.
Speaker:Like, it was like
Speaker:shit thrown at you.
Speaker:Hammers and all kinds of stuff.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:And I've chosen not to go down that path path because I don't
Speaker:think it's the way to do it.
Speaker:But like I, I certainly fucking learned a lot
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:From being in that environment.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Like it was a school of hard knocks and it's, it doesn't have a place now.
Speaker:No, it doesn't in society anymore.
Speaker:And there are good things about it, but there was also a lot
Speaker:of shit things about it too.
Speaker:Like I was lucky.
Speaker:My boss was pretty strict, but he was, he was fair as well.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Um, but you still could
Speaker:be strict, but hard knocks You can still be strict.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:But you just, it's the, it's the, the vocabulary and the
Speaker:body language around that.
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:It's, um, it's been good having been on, like he's not far off being qualified now.

Speaker:And what I try to do now when I'm scheduling, I'll be like, no, I want Ben
Speaker:on this 'cause that's a fix with this hardwood arcs or this colonial profile.

Speaker:have a go and own the opportunity because everyone's had to be in a situation

Speaker:resonated with me 'cause I went through the same thing with a risk reconstruction.

Speaker:I could kind of was at a point where I couldn't be on the tools
Speaker:'cause it was fucking painful.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Like, I couldn't move it, it was fucked for about six months.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I've got a really good backend system, which gives us a lot of
Speaker:reliability and the boys have all the details that they need.
Speaker:I just literally needed to let go.

Speaker:And, um, it's forced me to do it, so I've done it.

Speaker:Um, it's super high risk.
Speaker:There's a shit load of liability, which all of my assets are attached to.
Speaker:And, um, the returns were just dwindling.
Speaker:Mm. I'm like, not all things, like I'll take, take a couple of shit
Speaker:things with something good, but I'm like, no, this has all become shit.

Speaker:that a bit, and I'm like, I keep sort of going over capacity of the truck.

Speaker:Someone missed out on the auction that goes, Hey, I missed out on this auction.
Speaker:Can I just buy one for the same price?

Speaker:So that was the first order.
Speaker:And then someone, us through, uh, eBay and be like, oh, I need these bylaws,
Speaker:but I also need a pair of French doors.
Speaker:And as Arnie's about to say, no, I can't.

Speaker:So we did some French doors and then someone asked for a sliding door and
Speaker:basically he had a tandem carport in East Melbourne, and when it
Speaker:rained we would be throwing sawdust in the front to stop water coming

Speaker:And uh, we basically outgrew this tandem carport within a couple of months.
Speaker:So he's like, I need a factory.
Speaker:So he leased a factory.
Speaker:And at this stage I was subbing as a chippy.
Speaker:So I said to my boss, then I'm like, I, I gotta quit.
Speaker:I've just started a window company.
Speaker:I've just started a window company and um, we are doing this.
Speaker:And then I started doing like site measures and then, uh, I'm trying
Speaker:to do a quote and make it look fucking professional as a carpenter.
Speaker:And I'm like, fuck, this is so difficult on Excel.
Speaker:You know, it would've paint
Speaker:back in the day Microsoft Word.
Speaker:It was so, it was Excel.
Speaker:I was trying to do it on Excel, right, because, 'cause I wanted formulas and
Speaker:I'm like, this is fancy not working.
Speaker:I know what I do equals A plus b, I fucking call Andre.
Speaker:So I called Andre 'cause Andre's got a degree in programming and stuff.
Speaker:And um, we, I asked him, he came to give us a hand.

Speaker:Whereas I feel I haven't had that recently with some of my apprentices and I'm
Speaker:actually working through with, um, one of my fourth years at the moment and
Speaker:we're getting a strategy together, um, of how the next 10 months look about
Speaker:what, and, and I've kind of, um, set some metrics of what I think a good carpenter
Speaker:should be when they, um, get qualified.
Speaker:So we're currently working through together, um, on how we can plan
Speaker:that out over the next 10 months so we can hit, I've got 10 markers.
Speaker:Of what I think would be a good carpenter, which I would expect a recently
Speaker:qualified, um, tradesperson to do.
Speaker:'cause in my opinion, um, it's all great to do your apprenticeship and it's all
Speaker:great to go to tafe, but I think there is a, a, there's, there's a disconnect
Speaker:between the people delivering it, IE the builders and the, and the carpenters.
Speaker:And I don't think there's enough education at the moment
Speaker:around training the trainers.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So there's zero.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So we've had some great conversations with MEGT and we haven't.
Speaker:We haven't solved the problem yet.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:So we, we've just brought this up.
Speaker:It's the start of this conversation and they're
Speaker:really keen to start.
Speaker:They, they've identified this as an area too.
Speaker:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker:So I'm really excited about how, you know, once we get more minds
Speaker:thinking about how we can be better trainers to our apprentices, um, I'm
Speaker:actually really excited about that.
Speaker:But, so my mindful moment is actually, you know, my recommendation.
Speaker:Take the time with your apprentices, even if you are a builder offsite.
Speaker:'cause this is something that I've learned recently or realized
Speaker:recently that I don't do enough.
Speaker:Take the time to train.
Speaker:'cause there's no point just getting that bit of paper that
Speaker:says pass, pass, pass, pass, pass.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Because it doesn't mean anything.
Speaker:Put some context to it.
Speaker:Take the time to read through it and then take the time to talk to
Speaker:the tradespeople on site that are actually dealing with that apprentice.
Speaker:And make sure that it is a pass.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:A satisfactory pass.
Speaker:We should be like, I, when we did apprenticeships, you, it
Speaker:was, you got graded these days.
Speaker:It's just you, you tick box to get past.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:It just gets past no matter what.
Speaker:Even if he fails.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:That, I think that's where the issues become.
Speaker:I don't know.
Speaker:MEGT are keen to really Yeah.
Speaker:Push this and that's why we've got them on board as well.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:We want to, we wanna help 'em solve the problem and they wanna solve the problem.
Speaker:They, they've identified it and, um, they're being proactive on it and both
Speaker:of us have our, all of our apprentices with it just by chance as well.
Speaker:it was actually really nicely, like a nice sort of, uh, play of
Speaker:events where both of our, all our apprentices were through MEGT.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:We're presenting
Speaker:to them about how the Come on is a sponsor for this segment.
Speaker:And we should have just recorded the, uh.
Speaker:The actual interview.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Like it was kind of, it was, it was a really, really great conversation.

Speaker:I've actually connected them with some other people, so hopefully there's,
Speaker:you know, a bigger flow on effect with, um, you know, how an organization
Speaker:like MGT can influence the new wave of tradespeople coming through.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Don't you think though trade school should go a little bit
Speaker:backwards to what it used to be?
Speaker:I think it should be, personally, if you are doing a carpentry, it
Speaker:should be a five year apprenticeship.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I think in the third there's a lot of crap you can cut out in
Speaker:the apprenticeship system that you just don't need to know anymore.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Like one of the pet hates to have is they go do scaffolding, but they
Speaker:don't get a scaffolding license.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So why bother teaching if you're gonna do it given the license?
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I think that your third year you should be forced to do a diploma.
Speaker:Pretty simple.
Speaker:So then by the end of it, at the fifth year, like an electrical apprenticeship
Speaker:or uh, plumbing, you can go do your registration to be a licensed carpenter.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So you come out as a licensed carpenter.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:If you fail it, you are, you're not a carpenter, you are something else, but
Speaker:you this, at the end of the day, at the end of an apprenticeship, I think that as
Speaker:a carpenter, you walk out with nothing.
Speaker:You walk out with a cert three carpentry.
Speaker:There's no difference from my wife going down to Bunnings grabbing two nail
Speaker:guns and going, boom, I'm a carpenter.
Speaker:You have the same degree.
Speaker:There's nothing breaking that apart.
Speaker:And I think that is, I'd love
Speaker:to see Nicole alongside with two.
Speaker:She'd be better.
Speaker:She'd be, she'd be better
Speaker:than I would be.
Speaker:So, but I think that's the issue like as when that, and then people are gonna argue
Speaker:that's gonna increase prices in carpentry.
Speaker:You know what, it's someone you can hold accountable.
Speaker:They have a license and you know what, they treat themself with
Speaker:more respect because they feel that they're a little bit higher than,
Speaker:you don't have to get rid of the carpenters at a, the C3.
Speaker:You just have become like an A grade.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:You can become, get your apprenticeship as a spark.
Speaker:You never get your A grade.
Speaker:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker:You just have always have to work for someone license.
Speaker:And there's nothing wrong with that.
Speaker:Same as plumbing.
Speaker:As plumbing.
Speaker:Like some people go do roofing, some go do soar and drainage.
Speaker:Some people do like water.
Speaker:Like you don't have to do it all at carpentry too.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:You can go away and go, I'm gonna be a fucking gun fix car.
Speaker:I'm not gonna worry about learning framing, but I'm gonna be so dialed
Speaker:into my processes with fixes and, and know everything about it.
Speaker:Gear up for that and then off you go.

Speaker:Like that's what you become the expert at.
