Six words in Genesis have been argued over for thousands of years: let us make man in our image. This episode slows all the way down on that one verse from last time and asks what it actually meant, and still means.
Selem and Demut: Two Words That Aren't Neutral
The Hebrew words behind image and likeness carried real weight in the ancient world, tied to the practice of kings setting up statues to represent their rule in places they couldn't personally be. That's the backdrop Genesis is deliberately borrowing.
Ambassadors, Not Duplicates
Being made in God's image isn't a physical resemblance or a spark of divine substance planted inside us. It's closer to an ambassador's commission, representing the one who sent you without being that person yourself.
Ruling Well Instead of Ruling Badly
Dominion in verse 28 means cultivating and tending, not exploiting. The job handed to humanity on day six was to extend God's good order over what he had just spent five days making.
Both Together, From the Start
Verse 27 pairs male and female in the same breath as the image of God, which cut hard against the male-only royal language of the ancient world. Neither carries the image on their own or secondhand.
Three Ways to Read the Same Truth
Commentators split this into a royal view, a structural view about reason and moral choice, and a relational view rooted in the Trinity. I land on all three being true at once rather than having to pick one.
Why the Image Never Disappears
Even after sin entered the picture, Scripture never says the image of God left us. That's why human dignity holds regardless of usefulness, status, or income, and why it points forward to Jesus as the one who bore that image perfectly.
