[:

[00:00:23] Caroline Blazovsky: Welcome to our holiday party. Everyone. We want it to have a special holiday around the house. Get together with all of our friends that join us week after week to bring you the best information in home improvement.

[:

[00:00:44] Eric Goranson: with our number one.

[:

[00:00:51] Eric Goranson: we got you covered. This is

[:

[00:00:59] Eric Goranson: Welcome [00:01:00] to around the house, Caroline.

[:

[00:01:09] Caroline Blazovsky: everyone. Welcome to our around the house. Little fireside chat with all of our favorite friends, guests, colleagues, and we're happy to

[:

[00:01:24] Eric Goranson: Like everybody else, we decided to bring all our friends and colleagues to get. And have a great time today. So we should probably just start with the show here, Carolina, get some going. I think I see someone walking up here. Yeah, I do.

[:

[00:01:49] Eric Goranson: I think it is. I think that

[:

[00:01:56] Eric Goranson: There he is.

[:

[00:02:01] Dane Vawter: Hi,

[:

[00:02:12] Eric Goranson: Oh yeah. Yeah. Here we go. There's one right there. Hold on. Let's let's take a sip here.

[:

[00:02:26] Eric Goranson: So man, welcome to the show brother.

[:

[00:02:31] Eric Goranson: This is great.

[:

[00:02:42] Caroline Blazovsky: oh my

[:

[00:02:42] Dane Vawter: Andrew. Oh,

[:

[00:02:52] Eric Goranson: All right, I'll get this thing before. He runs through the doorbell. Hey Andrew, come on in brother.

[:

[00:03:02] Andrew Guido: get me in entry.

[:

[00:03:05] Eric Goranson: You are just top shelf for this aren't cha? .

[:

[00:03:16] Andrew Guido: Thank you. Thank you.

[:

[00:03:22] Eric Goranson: uh, architect to the stars. Got to love that you get the other doorbell.

[:

[00:03:42] to

[:

[00:03:50] Eric Goranson: It

[:

[00:03:56] Eric Goranson: come on in

[:

[00:04:07] Andrew Guido: Hello everyone. You got it.

[:

[00:04:29] Eric Goranson: Oh, ho.

[:

[00:04:48] Eric Goranson: start. David, Dave, Dave, Dave

[:

[00:04:52] Dave Jones: Uh, I'm Dave Jones. Uh, I'm in marketing at Broan NuTone and, uh, the best way to say what we do is, um, [00:05:00] we give fresh air to people to have a better life, better air, better life. Right? So, uh, indoor air quality is our jam. Uh, most people know us, uh, when they turn on their raincoat or Batman, uh, you may not know my name, but you definitely don't like products.

[:

[00:05:16] Eric Goranson: our jam. Nice. Welcome brother, Andrew Guido. Our friend. Thank you.

[:

[00:05:29] Eric Goranson: thank you bottle. So you're a friend. Yeah.

[:

[00:05:50] Andrew Guido: Uh, and we've got the walls and we got the roof up, uh, in the last two weeks, all being done through panelization. Uh, and so we've done some neat things and I Q plus a few [00:06:00] other things

[:

[00:06:10] Damon Bennett: I, uh,

[:

[00:06:30] Eric Goranson: toddy.

[:

[00:06:44] Dane Vawter: David's oil. He lives on the beach. You live on the beach right on the water. Oh my God. So

[:

[00:06:52] Eric Goranson: equals minus 30 real feel. So we're, we're, we're,

[:

[00:07:00] Eric Goranson: 40 today, so it's not that good.

[:

[00:07:05] Andrew Guido: It's a beautiful, I can go. We can almost go shirtless. I'll tell

[:

[00:07:13] David Applebaum: Well, well, well, 59, we're all bundled up. You barely see people's eyes.

[:

[00:07:23] Eric Goranson: I've got a t-shirt on shorts. Flip-flops, I'm walking around. I see people in parkas and I'm like style thing or what's going on because for me leaving in the Pacific Northwest at 62 degrees, it was nice out. And people were looking at me like I was naked or they thought I was a freak walking around in shorts and a t-shirt and where's your jacket kind of thing.

[:

[00:07:55] David Applebaum: They just thought you were nuts and they were probably correct. Yes, sir.[00:08:00]

[:

[00:08:22] Eric Goranson: That was just hilarious.

[:

[00:08:46] David Applebaum: And my job was to design secret rooms and an underground tunnel maze with locked rooms and, and other mechanisms that I won't mention [00:09:00] to handle the zombie apocalypse that is upcoming

[:

[00:09:06] David Applebaum: And I had to do it in a very chic way to

[:

[00:09:18] Dane Vawter: been there. Okay. Yeah.

[:

[00:09:26] David Applebaum: Yeah. Yeah. So they fit really nicely. And cherry, the two cup, the color combination is really

[:

[00:09:34] Dave Jones: as they're

[:

[00:09:39] Eric Goranson: Well, if you polished floors, they'll slide. Cause they're going to just fall down, you have to do is like set a sprinkler off and then nobody can stand up and then you're good. That's right.

[:

[00:09:54] Eric Goranson: See, it's all about footwear now.

[:

[00:09:58] David Applebaum: And this, this last year [00:10:00] has been, this last year has been a weird one because it's not been like any I've ever known. And, uh, it's funny how people react because after all of those zombie movies, this couple was absolutely sure it was coming, whether it was from the shots or whether it was from. The virus they're just waiting.

[:

[00:10:23] Eric Goranson: absolutely. Nowhere. There's a year's worth of food.

[:

[00:10:35] Andrew Guido: Go ahead, Dave.

[:

[00:10:38] Dave Jones: in. I don't know if it's quite as funny, but we a lot, almost along the same lines we had, um, we had people coming to us asking about, uh, sick rooms, right? For the same reason reasons.

[:

[00:11:00] Eric Goranson: life. So, uh, like

[:

[00:11:10] Eric Goranson: my house.

[:

[00:11:14] Dave Jones: interesting story that came out of this whole

[:

[00:11:24] Andrew Guido: Well, I'm. Turn it the other way. It's kind of like, I think it's more sad than funny. I met somebody only a couple of weeks ago that I've been dealing with on zoom calls for, since this whole thing happened. And it took us a half hour of, of, uh, meeting in person being together to realize that we never met everything was through zoom.

[:

[00:11:54] Eric Goranson: just

[:

[00:12:02] Eric Goranson: Is that a good thing?

[:

[00:12:05] Eric Goranson: area.

[:

[00:12:38] Eric Goranson: Was like

[:

[00:12:44] Dave Jones: explains why I've made it, made somebody friends

[:

[00:13:03] Eric Goranson: So I got to hear a story.

[:

[00:13:05] Caroline Blazovsky: don't know. I don't know. I can't, I'm I'm drawing a blank. I can't think of anything. What crazy. And this has happened to me. I mean, I don't know.

[:

[00:13:18] Dane Vawter: Good thing.

[:

[00:13:20] Dane Vawter: You've had like some crazy stuff.

[:

[00:13:25] Caroline Blazovsky: Hopefully no more floods for awhile and I'm happy for good friends. Happy for all of you guys. I'll be the positive one. And I'll say this is the time to be thankful, thankful for you all being here, thankful for being able to celebrate with y'all. So cheers

[:

[00:13:47] Eric Goranson: I mean, it's, uh, I've honestly, I do want to say just first of all, I've missed being here. I've missed being part of the family. Uh, you know, uh, I, I want to say hi to Carolyn for the first time, kind of [00:14:00] basically since, uh, joining the show, haven't had really a chance to say hi, um, I'm very happy to have you and have you join us.

[:

[00:14:09] Eric Goranson: kind of looking forward, man. Like, I I'm just, I I'm looking forward to what to what's to come. You got it. I have not had much happen throughout my year. I worked my day job. Yeah. And his day job is news. And so not any more, any more, but you're still working at the station that I don't have to do news.

[:

[00:14:46] Eric Goranson: Yeah, no, no, I'm good. I'm good. That's like the worst thing. Tell me about the day. Exactly. Exactly. I came from media. I know that world. You do? Yep. So it's been tough on that. So, Eric, I've got a

[:

[00:15:08] Caroline Blazovsky: So it could be a drink. It could be something you may have a cocktail, something that you just soul look forward to having around the holidays that you typically don't have. And I'll start off. We make a, a mean punch if you will. And so it's our drunk punch and it's got everything in it. Liquor, fresh cranberries, um, orange peel, oranges.

[:

[00:15:45] Dane Vawter: Special. Oh, I

[:

[00:16:05] Eric Goranson: it's crispy. Uh,

[:

[00:16:17] Andrew Guido: That's my favorite.

[:

[00:16:24] Dane Vawter: it's very

[:

[00:16:29] Damon Bennett: Yeah,

[:

[00:16:30] Andrew Guido: no, it's actually a very high protein meat, but it's very, very, very lean, very little fat. Uh, it's incredibly good for you. And I would put it just on a little bit of the maybe wild game side of chicken. All right. You know, so, so I'm a, I'm a picky eater and. When I was dating my mother last served it instead, it was chicken and I didn't know any better.

[:

[00:17:16] Andrew Guido: And my mother goes to a certain, my mother goes to my mother-in-law to be, no, my son doesn't like rabbit. I've tried it. He's never eaten my rabbit. So I know he doesn't like rabbit and I'm now like 20 shades of red. Uh, and it's just that my bubble, I made a different, and so

[:

[00:17:36] Eric Goranson: Welcome Greg holiday brother. Good to be here. Hi, how are you guys doing

[:

[00:17:43] Dane Vawter: Happy holidays.

[:

[00:17:47] Gregg Holliday: I'm sitting here thinking nothing makes Christmas better than a hot toddy and hot water

[:

[00:17:58] Eric Goranson: We'll go around here and, [00:18:00] uh, bring you in. I know you've had, uh, a recent addition to the family as well, right?

[:

[00:18:16] Eric Goranson: Oh, that's fantastic.

[:

[00:18:30] Damon Bennett: old yet.

[:

[00:18:32] Caroline Blazovsky: holiday gift right there.

[:

[00:18:36] David Applebaum: Heavy, larger smile than the. Not,

[:

[00:18:46] Eric Goranson: So I think he's winning all around. Right. They're going to be a great junior Greg.

[:

[00:19:04] Damon Bennett: here on Christmas Eve and

[:

[00:19:19] Eric Goranson: something different.

[:

[00:19:21] Dane Vawter: See, when you

[:

[00:19:39] Caroline Blazovsky: So that's like amazing

[:

[00:19:54] Eric Goranson: Life on the farm. It's new going over at Bradford. Why with you guys, you just winding down for the [00:20:00] holidays here.

[:

[00:20:02] Gregg Holliday: we are winding down and then ready to wind up for the first of the year for all of 2022. It's a very short window that you have before all the shows start up and then we're out there plugging away on heat, pump, water heaters, and the benefits that they bring to. Everybody's

[:

[00:20:20] Damon Bennett: Greg,

[:

[00:20:27] Eric Goranson: people. Zero. No

[:

[00:20:43] Gregg Holliday: So we build them in Middleville Michigan and put them on a truck. It can have them anywhere. They need to go very quickly. Yes,

[:

[00:20:51] Andrew Guido: Yeah. You must have got a big surge in business from New York recently.

[:

[00:21:07] Gregg Holliday: Uh, that was pretty interesting to see to

[:

[00:21:23] Andrew Guido: um, well I'm Andrew Guido, Greg. Great to meet you. And I'm from.

[:

[00:21:33] David Applebaum: got, and I'm David Applebom from Los Angeles and they need another drink.

[:

[00:21:42] Eric Goranson: just for living in Los Angeles. You need a

[:

[00:21:45] Dane Vawter: David's an architect,

[:

[00:21:49] Damon Bennett: duck

[:

[00:21:52] Gregg Holliday: there you go. Duck, duck eggs. They're so big. You can't

[:

[00:21:59] Dane Vawter: So I'll shoot it back [00:22:00] to Dave Jones. So, Dave, what's

[:

[00:22:03] Eric Goranson: Uh,

[:

[00:22:10] Dave Jones: I have a fruitcake recipe that was handed down from my great, great grandmother. That's uh, something Brandy for like three months

[:

[00:22:25] Dave Jones: cheese. So that then you wrap it. And, uh, my, on my dad's side, that family, uh, they didn't drink at all. So the only booze in the house was a bottle of Brandy and its sole purpose was to sow Keesmaat to wrap around the fruit cake.

[:

[00:22:50] Eric Goranson: Oh, amazing. That's my day.

[:

[00:22:59] Eric Goranson: deal. [00:23:00] Okay. There you go. Sounds good. Sweet.

[:

[00:23:04] David Applebaum: wants fruit cake. Wow.

[:

[00:23:11] Dane Vawter: So

[:

[00:23:14] David Applebaum: my mind is actually twofold because, um, I mean, first of all, I mean, Caroline actually knows I'm uh, I'm, I'm mastering I'm I'm refining my, uh, My, uh, uh, red sauce. Um, and I've, I've got, um, I'm having pasta tonight, but, uh, for, for Christmas, I actually have a longstanding tradition that, uh, ever since my son was in his mom's.

[:

[00:24:05] David Applebaum: So it's always a very fun thing. So, um, he comes to my house and I make a, um, bourbon infused rotisserie chicken. Okay.

[:

[00:24:20] David Applebaum: um, my, my son has said if he ever commits murder, that will be his last meal. So, um, but that's tradition and, and we'll watch elf while we're eating it. And then, uh, once we're done, we'd go to this party where, uh, my friend is from Louisiana and he makes a shrimp at two Fe oh, Uh, so it's chicken and shrimp at two Fe.

[:

[00:24:49] Damon Bennett: wonderful meals. Love it.

[:

[00:24:55] Eric Goranson: I first off for me, I've got to have my over the holidays. I'm [00:25:00] definitely more of a whiskey drinker. I drink a lot of. I'm more gin in the summertime when it's hot and I still drink Manhattans and things like that, but I actually make this Walnut liquor whiskey drinks that I make.

[:

[00:25:45] Eric Goranson: And I'll sip on that. Just not a lot, but just, you know, while I'm doing stuff. And, uh, that to me is just happiness here, you know, in the, in the winter time. And then of course, I've got to have my staples, which are my [00:26:00] cherry pies, you know, bacon that fresh, you know, and all that stuff. I definitely like the desserts.

[:

[00:26:12] Eric Goranson: pie. Um, actually for me, I like to have some, a little bit of Tillamook ice cream with that. So that's a, no, it was just a little ice cream with that I whipped cream is okay. If it's fresh. There he is. We have Damon Bennett in the house.

[:

[00:26:31] Eric Goranson: everybody good? Thanks for popping in on Christmas. No worries.

[:

[00:26:37] Damon Bennett: about the technology flub

[:

[00:26:42] Damon Bennett: Contractors. Aren't always the best, uh, you know, without the tools in their hands.

[:

[00:26:55] Eric Goranson: Andrew. I worry you too bad. I was thinking that was going to be by myself up here [00:27:00] back. I

[:

[00:27:07] Eric Goranson: Well, Damon is a good buddy of mine. You might've seen him, uh, in. He's still everywhere on my television, even though they've been running those old homes on home shows forever, they still are coming down here. It's like watching, like friends over and over again, but it's just always on the television.

[:

[00:27:30] David Applebaum: um, I watch a Holmes on homes and always thinking it's going to be a cage match.

[:

[00:28:08] Damon Bennett: So it was, um, you know, I look at, I look back at it as a wonderful experience, being able to go down to California, building the first house in the lower ninth ward, as Canadians, after, you know, working with Alan all kinds of stuff like that. But yeah, it was a amazing, amazing experience.

[:

[00:28:27] Andrew Guido: amazing. I was actually his first guest this year.

[:

[00:28:38] Damon Bennett: on the show. We'll have to hook up after this as well and get to know each other a little bit, Andrew.

[:

[00:28:45] Andrew Guido: for sure. I come with bread. So you definitely want to hook up.

[:

[00:28:53] Eric Goranson: I showed up. I showed up.

[:

[00:29:13] Eric Goranson: reason.

[:

[00:29:19] David Applebaum: you know, speaking of, of, um, Canada and bourbon, I just had somebody from the Canadian hardwood bureau yesterday. Tell me that I had to stop drinking bourbon because they were running out of white. Is that they're making? I told them

[:

[00:29:43] Damon Bennett: Oh

[:

[00:30:09] Eric Goranson: so David, as, as the co-host of the show, I am now demanding that in any of these luxury homes, you're building down there.

[:

[00:30:31] Damon Bennett: I was piecing

[:

[00:30:36] Damon Bennett: the way lumber is being priced these days up here. And I'm sure it's the same down there. It is unbelievable. I mean, it's come down a lot, but I mean the last two years, I know it's been crazy in our industry.

[:

[00:31:06] Damon Bennett: Um, and some of your other materials going forward that this might not be worth it. And then, you know, showing them the numbers, they were just, you know, they had to bow out. So it's, I don't know if it'll ever go back, but I mean, white Oak, especially with always kind of expensive. And I can just imagine it going forward now.

[:

[00:31:28] Eric Goranson: years. So somebody is

[:

[00:31:32] Eric Goranson: the

[:

[00:31:45] Eric Goranson: losing out on that.

[:

[00:31:52] Damon Bennett: 30 warehouse.

[:

[00:31:57] Damon Bennett: I'm

[:

[00:31:58] David Applebaum: with Andrew. Now that [00:32:00] Greg knows that you have white Oak on your floors, he's going to be sending one of his neighbors over just

[:

[00:32:17] Eric Goranson: ski ski throughout the house. Yeah. I have a little, little route

[:

[00:32:22] Eric Goranson: care of it, make it, yeah, you're going to be face nail and that stuff it'll be so fast.

[:

[00:32:31] Gregg Holliday: You come to the Louisville airport. You can actually sit in a bourbon barrel made inner on-deck style chair that sits the sits out in front of. Um, the two bars. So yeah, you can sip on some bourbon and actually sit in a

[:

[00:32:49] Damon Bennett: somebody just described my version

[:

[00:32:55] Eric Goranson: That is awesome. That is awesome. So, yeah, Damon and I [00:33:00] go way back, we met years ago here going to tool stuff, you know, and, uh, Milwaukee tools. And, uh, we've been, uh, having a good time with that over the years. And, you know, just like, uh, you know, I've known Greg for a few years here, Ned David, I've known for a while now, like Caroline and.

[:

[00:33:22] Dane Vawter: uh, blended the family, the families have all come together, which is so nice. Right. So now we all have new friends and new contacts and

[:

[00:33:43] Damon Bennett: And, uh, you know, just getting through everything here. So looking forward to things, opening up. I mean, I, uh, I moved locations now, so, um, I'm actually in Sarnia, which is a little bit closer to, uh, to the Barbara actually right on the border of port you're on here. So it's still working in Toronto, have my business going, I'll be starting on, [00:34:00] love it or listed the TV show next week, our yellow show as they're on there going forward.

[:

[00:34:07] Eric Goranson: congrats brother.

[:

[00:34:17] Damon Bennett: banks a bunch of versions. Uh, they, I believe they had an American Virgin as well. I'm not sure, but it's one of the longest running shows in Canada, uh, at 17 years and running at this point.

[:

[00:34:47] Damon Bennett: So

[:

[00:35:11] Damon Bennett: And after the show,

[:

[00:35:37] Eric Goranson: They think that man, those guys gotta be getting rich off that.

[:

[00:36:01] Damon Bennett: So we all have to fit into those. So, you know, being a subcontractor, um, there's all kinds of loopholes that could be avoided there, first of all, with union. Um, and that's no secret, like I'll put it all on the table. It's, it's no secret not being able to be in the union is a big bonus, uh, for a lot of these companies to be able to get talent on and get them for it at a lower cost.

[:

[00:36:47] Damon Bennett: But, um, you know, I, I I'll never say anything negative about the experience because it's given me stuff, but it's given me experiences that I'd never be able to have probably without TV behind it. So as I said, new [00:37:00] Orleans, California, um, some of the stuff know the people we've been able to help here. The it's been phenomenal.

[:

[00:37:12] Eric Goranson: Well, David, you did television too with, uh, national geographic up there doing that, uh, American mansion show.

[:

[00:37:30] David Applebaum: Um, I was involved in writing the script and I even moved cables and did all that kind of stuff. And, uh, yeah, I didn't make very much money, but it was a lot of fun. I mean, it's a lot different. I didn't have the kind of, um, You know, if you're building, you have to get the project done, you have to fit it on budget and you have to do it in time.

[:

[00:38:14] Damon Bennett: kind of wish I could

[:

[00:38:20] Eric Goranson: David. I want you to tell a story. If you could tell the story again for us out there. It is one of my favorite stories that you've told about designing Frank Sinatra's wet bar.

[:

[00:38:36] Eric Goranson: I love this story because you know, you've worked with the who's who, of Hollywood, but as I'm sitting here drinking, I'm thinking, man, I would have loved to have been there for that.

[:

[00:38:52] David Applebaum: Well, I, I had, I had worked with Mr and Mrs. Frank and Barbara, um, uh, before I [00:39:00] first did them when I was still an employee and I was working, um, uh, uh, on, on giving him his train room. And when I left on my own and, and he called me the very first time I met him, this is just kind of a little bit of background.

[:

[00:39:31] David Applebaum: And he just shake it. And he was, I could see the hairs on his res you don't, you know what water does it rots wood and it rusts metal. Why would I give you something as terrible as water? I'm going to ask you again. Would you like to. And although I like bourbon, I froze and I said, scotch, and he then pours me.

[:

[00:40:00] David Applebaum: drop of water, but then I knew, so I knew that the, the, it, the bar was important. So when we were framed up, um, I got with the contractor, we got saw horses and cement blocks and bricks and plywood two by fours, two by eights four by sixes, the whole thing. And we mocked up the bar and invited him to come and check it out because Barbara basically handled everything in the house, except the bar.

[:

[00:40:53] David Applebaum: He loved it. He was like running behind the bar, making cocktails and pouring champagne for Brian. [00:41:00] And opening the wine and going on this side and sitting and bleeding on it so he can make this higher. Can I make it wider? Now, there were many times that I was with Mr. Sinatra boosts was always part of the package.

[:

[00:41:20] David Applebaum: after he was done after like an hour of all these different mixing and drinking and passing and he stumbles into the limousine and drives off. And I look at my contractor and I say, did he even approve

[:

[00:41:38] David Applebaum: this morning? But what are we going to do? So we just went with the original that they first came up with one minor adjustment to making a bar a little bit wider and just hoped he wouldn't, I didn't tell the story.

[:

[00:42:00] Andrew Guido: So David I'm, I'm almost scared to ask. Did you lose use low toxic

[:

[00:42:06] David Applebaum: Um, you know, this was a long time ago and, uh, As a whole. Yes,

[:

[00:42:14] Andrew Guido: that one, it's kind of an

[:

[00:42:30] David Applebaum: So, um, we've been, uh, we've been energy efficient and, um, and I'm also, Caroline knows, this is how your Alona Caroline. And I got to know each other. I'm very into air exchange and fresh air. Um, and so

[:

[00:42:51] Andrew Guido: so there's nothing interfering with the natural frequent subs. The booze,

[:

[00:43:04] David Applebaum: but no, it's, it's, it's all, it's all booze.

[:

[00:43:13] Gregg Holliday: I need to come see you. I'm going to be in California once a month for a week for the next six or seven months

[:

[00:43:22] David Applebaum: you know what? My water, my gas water heater keeps on going out. It keeps on blowing out the pilot light. It should probably talk to you about

[:

[00:43:32] Caroline Blazovsky: David. I'm going to, I'm going to put the cat out of the bag, but David just bought like a home.

[:

[00:43:44] Dane Vawter: got some

[:

[00:43:57] David Applebaum: This is what we're doing. And it takes [00:44:00] hours. And so my treat was to get the billing done so I could go on a bike ride by the beach and then come back in time for this.

[:

[00:44:19] Eric Goranson: So February, it might be good for you to pop down there and help him out.

[:

[00:44:25] Caroline Blazovsky: all go. Why don't we make it around

[:

[00:44:29] Damon Bennett: David's.

[:

[00:44:42] Eric Goranson: and we'll have to sneak. We might have to sneak in drew and Damon across the border, but we will figure a way.

[:

[00:44:56] David Applebaum: barrels and saber sending[00:45:00]

[:

[00:45:10] Andrew Guido: I used to sneak at the drive-ins and, uh, using the

[:

[00:45:15] Gregg Holliday: well, and I know you all don't know this, but you know, this is our holiday call that we're talking about here. I actually have a birthday on December

[:

[00:45:24] Eric Goranson: He's happy.

[:

[00:45:42] Gregg Holliday: This is my big six oh years

[:

[00:45:49] David Applebaum: I think he can do, like, get your handlebar, your mustache and build some animal bars and put a six on one side and zero on the other for your 16

[:

[00:46:01] Eric Goranson: could be done. That would be awesome.

[:

[00:46:14] Eric Goranson: Good point. Good point. So I'm happy. We got to be able to introduce you guys together and, and, uh, and. Create a much bigger family here and around the house for our Christmas episode, we're sitting around the fire like this chat and having a cocktail, having a good time today.

[:

[00:46:40] David Applebaum: Can I add a great how grateful I am for your show? It is so entertaining and informative at the same time. I look forward to it every week.

[:

[00:47:00] Eric Goranson: which is fantastic.

[:

[00:47:10] Eric Goranson: Eric's wife

[:

[00:47:13] Eric Goranson: just a little bit of contact. Yeah. It's just

[:

[00:47:27] Eric Goranson: never did get

[:

[00:47:35] Dane Vawter: We need a little more booze and we'll

[:

[00:47:52] Eric Goranson: What? What's some of the new stuff that you're seeing out there that's exciting

[:

[00:48:15] Damon Bennett: And I know a lot of my framer friends aren't gonna like this, but I still see this. As a bit of the future, uh, I really do with being able to, uh, to work in a controlled environment, uh, pre-building homes, getting the numb faster, getting them done cheaper. I mean, housing prices all over north America. Uh, we just can't put them up fast enough.

[:

[00:48:55] Damon Bennett: We're building them in winters. We're building them in and really terrible conditions. And then [00:49:00] we're sealing them in with spray foam and other non breathable, uh, uh, materials. So we're getting dry rod and a house that's 20 years old, or we're getting, you know, structural, um, malfunctions that are happening in 20 year old homes or sometimes 10 year old homes.

[:

[00:49:36] Damon Bennett: Um, I'm on an under a bit of an, an NDA with the company out of California, but a very big company. They want to push into Canada and I've been talking about prefab for a long, long time. So I love custom homes. Don't get me wrong. I love framing. I love the process of it all, but I'm thinking about our future as human beings on this planet as well, and, uh, less material wastage, [00:50:00] um, and, and a high rate of employment too.

[:

[00:50:21] Damon Bennett: Yeah,

[:

[00:50:37] Caroline Blazovsky: It's about actually building connections and building a stronger network to achieve a lot of things, better building, healthier building. And so we feel that you're the industry leaders and that's why you're on this call. So Andrew, I'm going to shoot that off to you. You're working on something very similar.

[:

[00:51:21] Andrew Guido: Uh, Noah is SPI. Everything is plywood. Uh that's on top. Um, and then we, the next day we, um, put a, um, uh, the air barrier on the house and we put the windows on the house and we had the company that we were working with there to make sure that we did it. All right. And then the week later, um, you know, floor goes up one day, Uh, walls go up the next day.

[:

[00:52:00] Andrew Guido: Um, I'm on site then, you know, I'm, I'm trying to make it the healthiest house. And, you know, I saw that they, they didn't use, they didn't know him brought the hurricane

[:

[00:52:07] Andrew Guido: Uh, and so, you know, for $110, I met home Depot. That's $110 Canadian. That's probably about 20 bucks us.

[:

[00:52:27] Andrew Guido: this literally this 98 cent. Uh, we'll almost withstand an F1 storm and 80% of the homes, according to the catastrophic insurance bureau that we just had in summer in Barrie, Ontario, they're saying that 80% of those homes would have been standing and that's millions of dollars of damage for 110 bucks.

[:

[00:52:48] Eric Goranson: Yeah.

[:

[00:53:10] Damon Bennett: So a lot of this stuff is getting out, but 10 homes blew down, uh, because of the structural intake. Like, and so, so those a bit blown down the other 10 that are still in the process of being built, 10 are already built. They're still going ahead with construction on those. So

[:

[00:53:29] Damon Bennett: What's too fast and the technology sometimes can get ahead of us. Um, you know, we're using outside cheating and stuff and using it as structure, uh, minor things like that. Those are bigger things, but I mean, we're, we're just building too fast. We're going way too fast. We're minimizing unstructure trying to get more installation than structure.

[:

[00:54:09] Eric Goranson: you're the, you're the baby on this call?

[:

[00:54:21] Eric Goranson: Dave and I and Caroline were our gen X guys. I don't know. I'm not going to say for anybody else, but, uh, Daymond's my punk rock.

[:

[00:54:36] David Applebaum: are there just letting the developers do whatever they want to it here in Los Angeles, we have all these flippers they're buying houses for cash for.

[:

[00:55:13] David Applebaum: You can't see it and plaster over it on the exterior and somebody will buy a house. That's about

[:

[00:55:21] Eric Goranson: Yep. For top David, David, you and I were talking about this across, standing in front of your condo before you moved at that place or building across the street and I'm going. Yeah. So they had built these kind of town homes across the street.

[:

[00:56:02] Eric Goranson: There was no, the windows were going in. There was no tape. I mean,

[:

[00:56:28] Caroline Blazovsky: problem is demon.

[:

[00:56:46] Caroline Blazovsky: So this is the big thing everybody wanted property. It was so hot. They'd had to have the property and now they've got all kinds of problems going on. These houses should have never been sold. They went in without inspections, Eric and I talk about it all. So we're faced with [00:57:00] how do we fix this? And so we're doing testing.

[:

[00:57:06] David Applebaum: technology is

[:

[00:57:14] Dave Jones: and being in a, kind of a similar space as Andrew and Caroline. Like, we hear the same things we hear about the structural damage in Mosul.

[:

[00:57:22] Eric Goranson: the time we hear about it, it's

[:

[00:57:37] Dave Jones: Well, now you just sealed in all the moisture and you've got stuff growing, dangling from the ceiling. Cause it's still bad, right? All over the place. And some of it's solvable, right? Some of this stuff you can, you can fix, but some of it, you can't,

[:

[00:57:50] Dave Jones: weave our good partners, them, the guys that construction instruction.

[:

[00:57:56] Eric Goranson: even

[:

[00:57:56] Damon Bennett: you nail down your tie back. Right? If you don't

[:

[00:58:00] Dave Jones: a closure for that, to hold

[:

[00:58:05] Dave Jones: which then turns into mold and break down. And then like, you're not only use your occupant on Abby, but your building is unhappy and probably gonna fall down.

[:

[00:58:27] Dave Jones: The same thing as you guys are it's it's so

[:

[00:58:30] Caroline Blazovsky: out and you know what happens, Dave too? We don't have enough HVAC professionals. Like, I don't know if this has happened. I'm in New York city. So our New York, New Jersey Metro area. So we're, we don't have enough HVAC professionals to deal with all of the HVAC concerns.

[:

[00:58:56] Caroline Blazovsky: So a lot of the HVAC professionals see all these problems and then they're trying to deal with it. [00:59:00] So it's so complex, but I don't know. Are you having the same issues in Canada where we have, we really are lacking tradesmen, tremendous.

[:

[00:59:10] Damon Bennett: Seven to 10 years. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. And when we're talking about shortage and trades, we're not only talking about the building industry, we're talking about our infrastructure. We're talking about our roads. Our buildings are it's, it's everything that evolves around a society is what we're going to be lacking in that, like, it's, it's actually a scary thought about, um, you know, the lack of, uh, of skilled people in north America and it's our own bloody fault.

[:

[00:59:57] Damon Bennett: But it's still an issue of convincing people [01:00:00] that they're going to make a lot of money right off the bat to become a skilled trades person. But it's still trying to get them past that concept of getting off of your phone and you might actually have to do some physical work and that's been a real hurdle for me.

[:

[01:00:31] Damon Bennett: That's why all of this fake, uh, concrete cladding that looks like stone is appearing because to actually pay a contract or a pay a bricklayer to. Because there's so few of us last, um, you know, people are going to fake cladding. They're going with stucco that eventually leaks and gets trapped behind that wall.

[:

[01:01:02] Eric Goranson: Yeah, Greg, what are you seeing down there?

[:

[01:01:07] Gregg Holliday: You know, we see the same things you're talking about in the water heating tray, uh, where there's, there's not enough coming in, but on the bright side, what I am noticing is in some of these generational businesses, when the next generation is taking over, they're adopting some new technologies that help streamline their business, which is good.

[:

[01:01:40] Gregg Holliday: So, and you know, any, what you guys were saying about the manufactured housing? I absolutely agree. I had the chance in my previous life at general electric to go through in the course of a year 22 manufactured housing plant sites, all across the country for one of the largest, um, manufactured housing builders.

[:

[01:02:17] Gregg Holliday: Counting all the nails. And it just, it just seems to make such a big difference in the quality control when you've got somebody that, yeah, no

[:

[01:02:34] Eric Goranson: Let's run around the room here super quick and say best way to get ahold of everybody. Oh, look at Greg holiday over there. We'll get to that. David. If somebody was going to get ahold of you and wanting to talk to you about a project, what's the best place for them to go. Just go to my

[:

[01:02:54] Eric Goranson: You got it, but you're going to send me out in the cold already cold. I know, but it's warmed up [01:03:00] now. It's like 74 out California,

[:

[01:03:12] Andrew Guido: Yeah.

[:

[01:03:20] Eric Goranson: can find it all there. Awesome. Andrew Guido. Yeah,

[:

[01:03:28] Andrew Guido: That's E R T H a, which stands for every revolution, transforms humanity. Uh, and so, uh, you'll find a whole bunch of stuff there, including a whole bunch of scientific articles that we've uploaded. So you can start learning about what's going on inside.

[:

[01:03:48] Eric Goranson: That is awesome.

[:

[01:03:55] Gregg Holliday: Bradford, white.com. And you can go through the contact us there, or just email me [01:04:00] G holiday, H O L L a D a Y at
