Jodi Bourne:

Hey there.

2

:

Welcome back to the savvy host podcast.

3

:

I am excited to have you with me today.

4

:

I'm going to be talking about blogging.

5

:

And don't run away Quinn.

6

:

You hear the word blogging and one

of the questions I get the most is

7

:

do I really have to have a blog?

8

:

And I'm here to tell

you that no, you don't.

9

:

But if you ever really want a long-term

strategy to send traffic to your

10

:

website, Then blogging is a must.

11

:

And.

12

:

Even if you don't have a book direct

website right now, You can still start

13

:

a blog and it will start generating

traffic and that's going to just

14

:

serve you more and more in the future.

15

:

When you do decide to get your own

book, direct website and there's

16

:

tools that you can use for blogging.

17

:

That you don't even have to have a real

quote unquote, real website to use.

18

:

So I'm going to talk about

those on Friday's episode today.

19

:

I'm just going to be telling you

about three reasons why you should

20

:

start a vacation rental blog ASAP.

21

:

let's make that your 20, 24 goal

because it is really important and

22

:

it's going to help you tremendously.

23

:

The first reason that you need

to start a block is for search.

24

:

Engine optimization.

25

:

And search engine optimization is a

big, scary, three word phrase that lots

26

:

of people say and don't understand.

27

:

And lots of people don't even

know what it means at all.

28

:

My husband, Michael, he's always.

29

:

He always says.

30

:

To tell us.

31

:

I'm sorry, I'm laughing.

32

:

My husband, Michael, he always

tells people S Jody, how to

33

:

help your your Google SEO.

34

:

And it's so funny because he doesn't

know a damn thing about Google

35

:

SEO, but he thinks he sounds smart

when he tells people that anyway.

36

:

Search engine optimization.

37

:

What that means is you create content

and you optimize make that content.

38

:

Perform better.

39

:

For search and that can be Google

search, which of course that's what we

40

:

think about when we think of searching.

41

:

And, but that can be other search too,

that can be being has a search engine.

42

:

There's definitely other search engines is

just Google is the big one and the leader.

43

:

So they're definitely the one you

want to think about the most, but

44

:

you can also think about Pinterest.

45

:

Pinterest is also

considered a search engine.

46

:

So is YouTube a search engine?

47

:

Even though you wouldn't put a blog on

YouTube, when they go to Pinterest, you

48

:

can search for keywords and get results.

49

:

So Pinterest and Google are two of the

search engines that I actually recommend.

50

:

You use when you're thinking about

creating content for your blog?

51

:

So the way that.

52

:

Blogging content works to bring

traffic to your website is you create

53

:

content and the better the content is.

54

:

The more likely it is that Google

is going to show that content to

55

:

people when they search for it.

56

:

And the words that they use to search for

it are called key words or key phrases.

57

:

So there's.

58

:

Keywords are like one, two word.

59

:

Little short phrases, vacation rental.

60

:

Is a key word or key phrase, but

then there's, what's called long tail

61

:

keywords and long tail keywords would be.

62

:

Dog-friendly vacation rental

in Charleston, South Carolina.

63

:

Fewer people search for long tail keywords

than they do for the shorter keywords.

64

:

So of course, that gives people

the opportunity to get seen more by

65

:

Google when they use the longer tail

keywords and create content for that.

66

:

So again, the better the content

on your website, the more likely it

67

:

is for Google to show that content

to people when they search for it.

68

:

And by better, I really

honestly mean better.

69

:

It needs to be.

70

:

Longer.

71

:

It needs to be well-written

it needs to be engaging.

72

:

You can't just throw a 500 word

article that chat GPT spit out at you.

73

:

And expect that people are going to

spend time reading that it's boring.

74

:

It doesn't give them any information

that they can't get from chat GPT

75

:

or any other website out there.

76

:

So you have to create engaging

content because Google.

77

:

Knows how long people are staying

on your website on the page.

78

:

They know how far down they scrolled.

79

:

They know really based on that data

alone, how much time they're spending

80

:

and how much, how far down they scroll.

81

:

They know if they're reading your content.

82

:

If you have a video or an image gallery.

83

:

Google knows it.

84

:

If people are clicking on those buttons,

Google was smart like that and they know.

85

:

And so they know if they click on

an article and spend time on the

86

:

article and then click on a link in

the article to go to another article.

87

:

You want to do things on your

blog articles that make people

88

:

want to take those actions.

89

:

It makes people want to

scroll down the page.

90

:

It makes people.

91

:

Want to actually click when

they see it in the SERPs,

92

:

that's the search engine results

93

:

page.

94

:

Jodi Bourne: So when you type

in something in Google and the

95

:

results come, that's called a SERP.

96

:

They, when you see.

97

:

An article in the search engine results.

98

:

And somebody clicks on it.

99

:

Then that sends a signal to Google that

content is relevant to their search.

100

:

Then if they spend time on it,

it tells Google that content was

101

:

very relevant to their search.

102

:

So that's going to increase the likelihood

that the next time somebody searches.

103

:

For that particular keyword or some

of those keywords in some order.

104

:

That your content may be shown.

105

:

And over time.

106

:

The more people that click on it, the more

people that read it, and the more people

107

:

that click through spend time, scroll,

watch videos on your page, then more

108

:

and more of your content is going to be

shown when somebody else searches for it.

109

:

That's how it works.

110

:

When you have content on a

blog, you definitely want that

111

:

content to be what I call meaty.

112

:

I'm sure other people call this content

meaty too, but that means it has bones.

113

:

It has.

114

:

Structure and it is something

that people really want to digest.

115

:

So you can have a website that doesn't

have a blog that has keywords on

116

:

it and is optimized for keywords.

117

:

And no matter if you use a blog

or not, you should definitely.

118

:

Learn about search engine optimization

and how to do on-page optimization

119

:

for your website, which means how to

make sure that Google is going to see

120

:

as much of your content as possible.

121

:

But it is very difficult in almost

any destination that you're in

122

:

and almost any place where you

are marketing your vacation rental

123

:

for you to show up as just a.

124

:

For just the keyword vacation rental in

Whatever wherever you are or cabin rental

125

:

in the smoky mountains cap kevin rental

in gatlinburg It's really hard for you

126

:

to show up for that term Because there's

so much competition not only from your

127

:

next door neighbor who's got a vacation

rental but airbnb vrvo tripadvisor they're

128

:

advertising for those keywords Other big

property management companies they have

129

:

either created a lot of content for those

keywords they have a lot of properties

130

:

that can show up for those keywords or

their advertising as well So when you

131

:

are creating a blog when you have Blog

content Intent You're not necessarily

132

:

competing with those bigger companies

and those Those other Other sites for

133

:

the keywords that you would use for

the blog so what does that mean exactly

134

:

Let's say you have a vacation rental in.

135

:

in charleston i did.

136

:

did some research on this right before

I recorded if you were just going to

137

:

have a website and you concentrated on

the keyword vacation rental in charleston

138

:

Then All your pages with your property

was optimized for vacation rental

139

:

in charleston or some combination of

those words charleston vacation rentals

140

:

charleston south carolina Vacation homes

all of those different keywords that go

141

:

with just vacation rental in charleston

,:

142

:

Ms for that combination of keywords 8,800

people per month on average According

143

:

to google search for that combination

of keywords so how in the heck are you

144

:

going to show up With your vacation rental

company in charleston If you haven't two

145

:

or three or four properties in charleston

you're not going to i hate to say that

146

:

but you're probably not going to unless

you're in a destination With very little

147

:

competition however If you have a blog and

you are Using content marketing Then what

148

:

you're going to write about And write for

are the keywords the long tail keywords

149

:

where people are still searching for this

content the keyword phrase the long tail

150

:

keyword phrase Things to do in charleston

with kids It's 840 searches per month So

151

:

when you're looking at 840 searches per

month versus 8,800 searches per month 840.

152

:

sure that's less people But it's also Less

competitive there's not as many people

153

:

or businesses creating content for that

154

:

And then if you look at the

keyword phrase, Dog-friendly

155

:

things to do in Charleston.

156

:

There's only 90 searches for that.

157

:

The phrase is Charleston dog

friendly has 170 searches.

158

:

Historic walking tours

in Charleston has 210.

159

:

Searches per month.

160

:

Things to do for young couples in

Charleston has 140 searches per month.

161

:

Couples, getaway ideas in Charleston

has 70 searches for month.

162

:

Charleston for foodies

has 50 searches per month.

163

:

If you're in Charleston, then

I've just given you a heck of

164

:

a lot of ideas for blog posts.

165

:

Because when you look at that, you might

say, and I've had people say this to me

166

:

before it will, but if only 50 people

are searching for it, then why would

167

:

I want to write content about that?

168

:

And 50 people is a lot of people.

169

:

50 people is yes, it's not 8,800

or 840, but your content is going

170

:

to be more likely to be seen.

171

:

Faster.

172

:

If you writing an article about couple's

getaway ideas for Charleston, and you

173

:

use other keywords within that article.

174

:

Maybe you talk about how young

couples in Charleston or where

175

:

they can get engaged in Charleston.

176

:

A whole series of articles about

things to do for couples in

177

:

Charleston and around Charleston.

178

:

If that's your guest avatar or

young couples or couples, then

179

:

you've created this whole series

of articles just for them.

180

:

And you've used these keywords

and intersperse them throughout

181

:

your content and you link articles

back and forth to each other.

182

:

I call that the spider

web content spiderweb.

183

:

Then, if you do that, then you

are going to rank pretty quickly

184

:

and pretty highly for those terms.

185

:

And if your content is great, like I

mentioned earlier, then you're really

186

:

going to do well with those terms because

people are going to love that content.

187

:

They may share it.

188

:

They're going to read it, all of the

things that not only you want them

189

:

to do, but Google wants them to do.

190

:

And of course your goal with the blog is

not only to get traffic to your website.

191

:

But it is to develop a relationship

with people so that they trust

192

:

you enough to book from you.

193

:

So you want them to come to your

website, you want them to read

194

:

your content and you want them to.

195

:

I make a decision to take the next step,

which is either booking with you or

196

:

oftentimes they're not ready to book.

197

:

So that would be signing up for your

email newsletter, reading another article,

198

:

connecting with you on social media.

199

:

That's content marketing

in action, right there.

200

:

So that's the second reason.

201

:

That you should start a blog ASAP.

202

:

Is so that you can start

developing content that creates

203

:

a relationship with your guests.

204

:

So you want your box to show personality?

205

:

You want them to get people

interested in what you do and

206

:

what your business is about.

207

:

So when you're writing cheap

kid-friendly activities in Charleston,

208

:

Then you want to give a first person

account of the time you and your

209

:

kids went around Charleston doing

things or make it fun and interesting.

210

:

If you don't have personal stories

to share, you can still make it fun.

211

:

Make it interesting.

212

:

Share who you are.

213

:

Add details, add little

anecdotes here and there.

214

:

And that's really sounds hard.

215

:

It sounds daunting, but you

can learn how to tell better

216

:

stories with your marketing.

217

:

You can learn how to write better.

218

:

Content.

219

:

You just take some practice.

220

:

I promise.

221

:

I have worked with a host.

222

:

Her name is Shereen and

she owns my star VR.

223

:

Out in Canab Utah, which is in the

middle of the desert near all those

224

:

national parks, which now I've forgotten.

225

:

The names of, and she and her

husband also have a they do a

226

:

four Wheeler tours and Jeep tours.

227

:

So she has a blog on her

vacate on her website.

228

:

It's my star vr.com.

229

:

If you want to go look and

I designed her website.

230

:

So if you like it hit me up.

231

:

But she writes the most amazing,

you can see some of her blog posts.

232

:

She writes very personalized.

233

:

Blog posts and they're great.

234

:

I pulled an example from one.

235

:

So she's talking about Going

to the grand canyon from canal,

236

:

because they're like the closest town

to the grand canyon in that area.

237

:

And she says, Everybody wants to go

to the grand canyon, one of the seven

238

:

natural wonders in the world, but wait.

239

:

Stop at Jacob lake, not really

a lake, just a gas station.

240

:

Named for a guy, Jacob lake.

241

:

Stop on the way.

242

:

The lodge there has great cookies.

243

:

Grab a few for enjoying at the rim.

244

:

So she personalized her blog

post about grand canyon.

245

:

And of course she does in other ways

as well, just by telling people this.

246

:

Fun little tidbit of information.

247

:

Grab a few cookies on your

way at this extra stop.

248

:

And that adds personality, she also

talks about her grandkids and her hobbies

249

:

and her husband and all of his hobbies.

250

:

They you have to go see their website

and you have to look at their properties

251

:

because they put them together.

252

:

They're so great.

253

:

One of them is based on movies.

254

:

One of them is based on old cars.

255

:

So they're themed properties.

256

:

They get tons of reviews.

257

:

But what is exciting is she has

people asking her all the time, actual

258

:

guests asking her about her grandkids.

259

:

Because they've read her blog posts

and they've signed up for her email

260

:

newsletter and they have gotten

to know her through her content.

261

:

There's no better relationship than

when somebody has fallen in love with

262

:

your blog post or with any of your

content and wants to book with you.

263

:

Not only because they see that

you have a great property or that

264

:

you're in an O an amazing area,

or you provide the amenities, but

265

:

because they fallen in love with you.

266

:

That is the difference between

you and the guy next door to

267

:

you with a vacation rental.

268

:

That is one of your unique

selling propositions.

269

:

Is who you are.

270

:

To other people who your personality is.

271

:

So I want you to think about

that when you're thinking about.

272

:

Blogging.

273

:

I want you to think about ways that

you can personalize the details in your

274

:

blog posts and make them more engaging

and make people want to read more.

275

:

The third reason that you

should start a blog ASAP.

276

:

Is because your blog content can be

repurposed to other platforms over and

277

:

over and over and over and over again.

278

:

One blog post about things to

do in Charleston for families.

279

:

Can become Facebook and Instagram

post once a month for eternity.

280

:

You can even use the same exact post.

281

:

You can copy the images.

282

:

You can copy the caption.

283

:

You can just repost it because guess what?

284

:

Nobody is going to remember.

285

:

And most of the time, the

people who are following you.

286

:

Don't see it because . A

smaller percentage.

287

:

Our own Facebook or Instagram

when you're posting content,

288

:

so they're not going to see it.

289

:

If they do see it, they're

not going to remember it.

290

:

If they do remember it,

they're not going to care.

291

:

So you definitely can do that.

292

:

Now, if you're doing it on Instagram,

I do suggest you change out the photo.

293

:

If it's going to stay in your

feed, just because people might

294

:

go through and see it, but really

you don't even have to do that.

295

:

Just set it and forget it.

296

:

You can link to the article.

297

:

You can talk about the

article and link to it.

298

:

Or you can take little tidbits

from the article and turn

299

:

that into a social media post.

300

:

Maybe you have six

ideas you want to share.

301

:

For a dog friendly hiking trails.

302

:

And over the next six months, you

have one post every month about

303

:

one of the different hiking trails

and why it's a great dog friendly

304

:

trail and how much you enjoyed it.

305

:

And maybe here's a picture of you and

your dog enjoying this hiking trail you

306

:

can turn it into additional content.

307

:

You can turn it into an email newsletter.

308

:

You can turn it into just a

story for an email newsletter.

309

:

You can turn it into a real or a Tik

TOK video by creating a storyboard

310

:

of the shots that you want that go

along with the outline from the blog.

311

:

So once you have the blog down, Then you

really have your entire content marketing

312

:

strategy down for four year and for more.

313

:

' cause, you can just keep regurgitating

that same content over and over again.

314

:

The other thing you have when you

have a blog is you have a reason

315

:

to put your content on Pinterest.

316

:

A lot of people want to

start a Pinterest for their.

317

:

Vacation rental.

318

:

And what they do is they just start

posting photos of their vacation rental.

319

:

Leading them back to their website.

320

:

And people on Pinterest may see that

and they make Pinot or whatever.

321

:

But really what people on Pinterest

want to see are articles like this,

322

:

that they can pin and save and

share and read because they want to.

323

:

Learn more about things to do.

324

:

Pinterest is a place where people plan.

325

:

Vacations where they

get ideas for vacations.

326

:

So Pinterest is a great

place for you to be as well.

327

:

If you have blog content, but

if you don't have blog content,

328

:

don't even mess with Pinterest

329

:

Those are my three.

330

:

Reasons why you should start a blog today.

331

:

And what are your action

items going to be?

332

:

I want you to make a

commitment to yourself that

333

:

you're going to start a blog.

334

:

And even if you don't have a website

right now, Then you can get the ideas

335

:

together and start writing the content

and getting it ready for the day.

336

:

When you do have a blog.

337

:

On then on Friday's episode, I'm

going to go over some ways you

338

:

can start a blog now without even

really any money invested in it.

339

:

And just to start getting it

out there, get used to it.

340

:

That's what you want to do, even

if it's not getting any traction,

341

:

even if you're not doing direct

bookings, it's going to get you.

342

:

Into practice of doing it

and it's going to help you.

343

:

Now people make tons of money

with their blogs just by being

344

:

engaging and developing an audience.

345

:

You can get people to read your posts.

346

:

And follow you more and learn

about you and sign up for your

347

:

newsletter and book your vacation

rentals, just from reading a blog.

348

:

I have clients who have done just that.

349

:

So I know it can be done in all

sorts of different locations and

350

:

destinations you can do it too.

351

:

Your next action item.

352

:

Is I want you.

353

:

To think of.

354

:

Blog topics.

355

:

Even though you may not don't know

how to do the keyword research

356

:

that actually tells you the amount

of searches and all of that.

357

:

That's something that I teach in my.

358

:

In my marketing or coaching program

and in my content marketing courses,

359

:

but you can definitely start by just

coming up with ideas that are perfect

360

:

for your specific guest avatars.

361

:

I want you to just jot down some

ideas, maybe get some post-it notes.

362

:

Go through and create a list of

topics that you can write about.

363

:

If you already have a blog.

364

:

Choose one and write about it.

365

:

And again, in my vacation rental

marketing group coaching program.

366

:

I go over ways to make your Bo

blogs better, make them more

367

:

personable, make them reach the right

audience, make sure that they're

368

:

targeted to your guest avatar.

369

:

So even if you're not great with

that right now, you can get better.

370

:

I think it's important for

you to just start today.

371

:

Okay, this is all I've

got on blogging today.

372

:

I hope that this helped you decide

that you need to start a blog and

373

:

that you're going to take action.

374

:

To get started with the blog,

or if you already have a blog.

375

:

You're going to improve your

blog and make it the bad-ass blog

376

:

that I know that you could have.

377

:

I on Friday's episode, I'm going

to be going over some ways you can

378

:

start blogging without a website.

379

:

If you don't have one yet.

380

:

And I'll also be answering

any questions that I get about

381

:

bogging between now and then.

382

:

I'm actually a day late

on getting this out there.

383

:

So you don't have as much time to get

back to me with a question, but if

384

:

you do, then I'll answer it on Friday.

385

:

And if you have a question in the

future, feel free to email me.

386

:

DM me hit me up.

387

:

will try to answer it for you.
