Speaker:

francesca--she-her-_3_07-27-2024_121809:

Welcome to reading under the

2

:

covers, a romance novel podcast.

3

:

I'm Francesca from under

the covers book blog.

4

:

And today I am excited to

bring you another romanceopoly

5

:

reading recommendations episode.

6

:

If you guys don't know, Romanceopoly

is a year long reading challenge

7

:

where you can basically explore all

sub genres of romance and also step

8

:

a little bit outside of that as well,

which will guarantee you a just really

9

:

diverse and fun year of reading.

10

:

The challenge is designed as a board

and you can basically go through the

11

:

board either by rolling the dice or

going challenge by challenge in order.

12

:

Each challenge has a reading

prompt or a specific genre

13

:

or sub genre assigned to it.

14

:

So you'll either choose one

of those options and pick a

15

:

book that fits the category.

16

:

Now there are a lot of challenges , but

you don't necessarily have to read All

17

:

of them and complete the whole board

in order to complete the challenge.

18

:

So I suggest that you

head over to romanceopoly.

19

:

com and you can find all of the

rules if you want to participate.

20

:

There is definitely still time for you

to participate and read along with us.

21

:

And remember that sometimes participating

in a reading challenge may not necessarily

22

:

just be about finishing the challenge,

but just the experience itself.

23

:

So it's never too late to join us and

come and participate with Romanceopoly.

24

:

For today's episode.

25

:

I have book recommendations for

city lane, and the prompt for this

26

:

is to read a funny urban fantasy.

27

:

I happen to absolutely

love funny urban fantasies.

28

:

I feel like I need to

even read more of them.

29

:

I'm always on the lookout.

30

:

So I was very excited that

we managed to include this

31

:

prompt this year on the board.

32

:

And if you're not doing board challenges

and you're just doing the genre,

33

:

it is an urban fantasy challenge.

34

:

So, these recommendations

will fit no matter which one

35

:

of the two you're completing.

36

:

Now, I think there are some

classics when it comes to

37

:

thinking of a funny urban fantasy.

38

:

And there are also some urban

fantasies that have small

39

:

elements of fun and humor in them.

40

:

Like, for example, our beloved, Kate

Daniels series by Ilona Andrews.

41

:

There's definitely so much humor in that

series, but I still wouldn't necessarily

42

:

be calling it a funny urban fantasy.

43

:

But if you have not read that series

yet, I will leave a link in the show

44

:

notes down below where you can get our

complete series guide on that series.

45

:

And it's absolutely amazing.

46

:

It is a must read series.

47

:

If you're a fan of urban fantasy and you

know what, there's enough humor in it.

48

:

So you could just read

it for this prompt too.

49

:

But we're not talking Kate Daniels

today, so let's dive right into

50

:

my recommendations that I have for

you guys for funny urban fantasies

51

:

that you can read for Romanceopoly.

52

:

Again, this is for City Lane.

53

:

The first one I picked up on a complete

whim, and actually it was a, Social media

54

:

recommendation by Ilona Andrews, and that

is Death and Relaxation by Devon Monk.

55

:

This is the first book in

the Ordinary Magic series.

56

:

I have also read some of the

other books in the series.

57

:

Absolutely loved it.

58

:

It's a series that has a small town

vibe and plenty of humor Where we

59

:

dive into this chaotic world and

unique world of ordinary Oregon.

60

:

The heroine in this book is the police

chief and she's got her hands full with

61

:

a mix of supernaturals in the town.

62

:

You've got vampires and werewolves

and all kinds of creatures, but

63

:

you also have the vacationing gods

who are always causing trouble.

64

:

Because, yes, this is basically the place

where the gods come on vacation, and we

65

:

also even have death on vacation here.

66

:

With the rhubarb

festival fast approaching.

67

:

Delaney, our heroine is

juggling so many things.

68

:

way more than the usual small

town drama and also the looming

69

:

threat of godly tantrums.

70

:

And as if things are not complicated

enough, her ex also shows up

71

:

just when she's starting to catch

feelings for Ryder, her childhood

72

:

friend, and the guy that she should

not be having any feelings for.

73

:

But then a dead body washes ashore and

it's not just anybody, it's a god's body.

74

:

Now, Delaney has to solve the murder

of a god, deal with the fallout

75

:

of the god power on the loose,

and try to keep the apocalypse on

76

:

hold all of that while navigating

small town drama and her love life.

77

:

It's just another day in the life

of the ordinary chief of police

78

:

where ordinary is anything but.

79

:

I've got a full review for this book on

the blog and I will leave it linked in

80

:

the show notes down below as well, but

highly recommend that you check out this

81

:

book and that you check out this series.

82

:

You'll find lots of endearing

characters, a lot of also found

83

:

family and family as well because our

heroine has her bond with her sisters.

84

:

You'll get your fix for romance,

unlikely sidekicks, and I would

85

:

say kind of medium stakes.

86

:

It's not super high stakes, but

it's definitely not low stakes.

87

:

So it's just got the perfect mix

and it's also perfect for summer.

88

:

I think all of these funny urban

fantasies are perfect summer

89

:

reads as well, or transitioning

between summer and fall reading.

90

:

And if you're watching this and you're

deep into your fall reading or your dark

91

:

paranormal reads, these are great palette

cleansers in between those as well.

92

:

The next one that I'm going to recommend

should come as no surprise to any of

93

:

you because it's actually one of my

absolute favorite series in urban fantasy.

94

:

And we've done nothing but recommend

this series here at Under the Covers.

95

:

And that is First Grave on

the Right by Darynda Jones.

96

:

This is the first book in the Charley

Davidson series, one of our all

97

:

time absolute favorite urban fantasy

series here at Under the Covers.

98

:

Darynda Jones is one of

our favorite authors.

99

:

In fact, a few years ago, we had posted

a video with Darynda Jones answering

100

:

some interview questions from us.

101

:

And I'll be sure to also leave that

link in the show notes below as well.

102

:

I think it's super fun.

103

:

Her series is so amazing.

104

:

You'll definitely want to be reading

it and definitely read it in order.

105

:

So, Charley Davidson is a

part time private investigator

106

:

and full time Grim Reaper.

107

:

Yes, you heard that right, Charley sees

dead people, and It's basically her

108

:

job to help them go into the light.

109

:

But when the deceased have been

murdered, it is often very tricky.

110

:

They usually like to stick around

to see justice being served.

111

:

As if juggling ghostly clients and

solving murders was not enough Charlie's

112

:

nights are haunted by really hot dreams

about this mysterious dark figure

113

:

that's been haunting her and following

her for as long as she can remember.

114

:

The twist is that he's actually not dead.

115

:

In fact, he might actually be

something way more complicated

116

:

and dangerously attractive.

117

:

And believe me, you'll want to stick

around with this series until you find

118

:

out exactly who he is because he is one

of my all time favorite paranormal heroes.

119

:

And you'll probably be calling

him your book boyfriend as well.

120

:

This series will give you

lots of laugh out loud humor,

121

:

incredible sizzling chemistry.

122

:

And First Grave on the right is just that

perfect introduction to a world where

123

:

the dead don't really rest in peace and

the living are just full of surprises.

124

:

I would say that the Charley Davidson

series is a classic in this category.

125

:

So if you have not read it,

you have to at least give

126

:

yourself a try and check it out.

127

:

Now, the next book is one that I read

recently, and I was super excited

128

:

to read it because it gave me the

Charley Davidson vibes that I have been

129

:

missing since finishing the series.

130

:

Even though the element of paranormal

is slightly less because where Charley

131

:

Davidson sees ghosts, this one just

has basically psychic abilities.

132

:

It definitely is a little more toned

down when it comes to the paranormal,

133

:

but the humor is definitely there

and the set of characters and

134

:

the vibe of the story as well.

135

:

And that is The Dead Guy

Next Door by Lucy Score.

136

:

This is the first book in

the Riley Thorn series.

137

:

And if I could also compare it to

something that is contemporary,

138

:

and it is something that I've also

compared the Darynda Jones Charley

139

:

Davidson series to, is Janet

Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series.

140

:

So if you like that, you'll

definitely enjoy both of these series.

141

:

Now Riley Thorn's life

is anything but ordinary.

142

:

She's divorced.

143

:

She's broke.

144

:

She's living in this quirky

building full of elderly neighbors.

145

:

And she's been having these

hallucinations her whole life that

146

:

she's been basically ignoring.

147

:

Meanwhile, her tarot reading

mom keeps telling her that those

148

:

are not hallucinations and she's

actually having clairvoyant visions.

149

:

Sounds great, doesn't it?

150

:

except one of those visions is that she

sees her next door neighbor being murdered

151

:

in his apartment, and things get very

real when a private investigator shows up

152

:

knocking on that neighbor's door one day.

153

:

He's charming, he's good

looking, and together they find

154

:

her next door neighbor dead.

155

:

Now, her vision has come to life and

she is definitely prime suspect in

156

:

this private investigator's eyes.

157

:

While the police are investigating,

he's been hired also to find

158

:

out what really happened to him.

159

:

And while he also needs to

investigate her, he definitely

160

:

needs her help to uncover some

of the clues and crack the case.

161

:

So they team up to solve this murder at

the same time as she's having to come to

162

:

terms with her powers and her abilities

and just deal with her attraction to

163

:

Nick and also with her meddling family.

164

:

If you're looking for that family vibe.

165

:

also found family and lots of humor with

a great side romance, then this is going

166

:

to be a great series for you to check out.

167

:

It's fun.

168

:

It's thrilling.

169

:

There's chemistry between

the two characters.

170

:

It's got a touch of supernatural

and also a great whodunit mystery.

171

:

The next book that I have for you guys

is also one that's super interesting

172

:

because it's very different, and

it is Karma Girl by Jennifer Estep.

173

:

This is the first book in the

Big Time series, now, Karma Girl

174

:

is basically a superhero story.

175

:

There is a bit of romance in it, but it

is more of an urban fantasy with a dose

176

:

of romance, as opposed to a paranormal

romance, at least in my opinion.

177

:

Our heroine, who is not a superhero,

she's an investigative reporter and on

178

:

her wedding day, she gets the shock of

her life when she finds out that her

179

:

fiance is a superhero and her best friend

is a super villain and they've been

180

:

basically cheating on her and she finds

them together right on her wedding day.

181

:

So to spite them, she decides to expose

their identities and writes this article

182

:

on her newspaper it goes massively viral

and she becomes the reporter that is in

183

:

charge of exposing all those superheroes

and supervillains all over the country.

184

:

So she travels from city to city

until she uncovers the identity

185

:

and exposes those superheroes.

186

:

Then she lands her latest job at a top

newspaper in Big Time New York it's

187

:

a city full of masked superheroes and

supervillains, and everything seems to

188

:

be going great until she's kidnapped by

the terrible triad uber villain team.

189

:

They basically give her the task of

uncovering the identity of Stryker,

190

:

who is the leader of The fearless

five that is the superheroes team

191

:

of the city or face a deadly fate

192

:

as she starts to dig into Stryker's

life and also has her run in

193

:

encounters with him a la Lois Lane

and Clark Kent, she finds herself

194

:

unexpectedly attracted and drawn to him.

195

:

Torn between her duty as a reporter,

the threat that she's facing, and

196

:

dealing with the internal struggle

of the reasons why she's been doing

197

:

this job, all of that while dealing

with her growing feelings for Stryker.

198

:

In Karma Girl, Carmen has to navigate

these feelings, try to defeat the

199

:

terrible triad that's threatening

her life, navigate this dangerous

200

:

world of secret identities, A bit

of romance and high stakes action.

201

:

It's a really fun and thrilling

superhero urban fantasy romance.

202

:

With plenty of twists and turns, and

you'll definitely want to continue

203

:

reading on the series as well.

204

:

The next one is also a bit different,

and I read this book years and years

205

:

ago, but I still remember how much I

enjoyed reading it, and that is My Life

206

:

as a White Trash Zombie by Diana Rowland.

207

:

It is the first book in the

White Trash Zombie series.

208

:

And I remember picking this up

mainly because of the cover art.

209

:

It is artwork by Dan Dos Santos,

which is the same artist that does the

210

:

covers for the Patricia Briggs series.

211

:

Absolutely stunning.

212

:

Every single cover in this series,

love them, but I'm happy to report

213

:

that the book was also a ton of fun.

214

:

And I love that it doesn't take itself

too seriously while still delivering

215

:

a great urban fantasy read that

packs the action, a great plot, great

216

:

characters, and just lots of fun.

217

:

Our heroine Angel's life is a mess.

218

:

She's a high school dropout

living in the swamps of southern

219

:

Louisiana with her alcoholic dad.

220

:

She has a criminal record and a pill habit

She's been in and out of crappy jobs and

221

:

now faces probation for a felony however,

things get even weirder for her when she

222

:

wakes up ER from a supposed overdose,

only to find no sign of injury from the

223

:

car crash that she actually remembers.

224

:

Then she receives an anonymous

letter that directs her to a

225

:

job at the parish's morgue.

226

:

A job that she can't refuse because Angel

suddenly finds herself craving brains.

227

:

And developing a major crush on

a honky deputy all while trying

228

:

to navigate her undead life

229

:

as if that wasn't enough.

230

:

There's a serial killer on the loose.

231

:

Decapitating victims and making angels

cravings even harder to control.

232

:

To survive in this new world and in

this new life, angel has to grow up

233

:

very fast, balance this bizarre new

appetite that she has and keep her

234

:

new job or she's basically dead meat.

235

:

I can guarantee you that My Life as a

White Trash Zombie is going to be a quirky

236

:

and darkly funny take on zombie life.

237

:

It's full of unexpected twists, and

you'll find our main character

238

:

here who is very gritty, but at

the same time totally relatable.

239

:

The next one is also a series that we love

to recommend here at Under the Covers,

240

:

and it is Slouch Witch by Helen Harper.

241

:

This is the first book in the Lazy

Girl's Guide to Magic series, and

242

:

Suzanne always talks about this series.

243

:

I will leave links to the reviews

for all of the books that I've talked

244

:

about that we have posted on the

blog in the show notes down below.

245

:

But in Slouch Witch, we're introduced

to Ivy, and she's a witch who's

246

:

anything but your typical heroine.

247

:

Her ideal day involves lounging on the

couch, binge watching TV shows, munching

248

:

on junk food, and arguing with her cat.

249

:

Definitely not fighting

crime and casting spells.

250

:

But, due to a mix up, her laid back

lifestyle is turned upside down when

251

:

she's mistakenly enlisted into the arcane

branch, which is the investigative arm of

252

:

the holy order of magical enlightenment.

253

:

So now instead of just lounging

and chilling at home, She's

254

:

dragged into a case that involves

a stolen valuable object.

255

:

To make matters worse she's paired

with Raphael who is serious and

256

:

kind of perfect, so definitely polar

opposite from her carefree vibe.

257

:

Those pretty eyes definitely

make her stomach flutter, but his

258

:

uptight attitude drives her mad.

259

:

The tension between them is

palpable, and not so much in the

260

:

romantic kind, but more in the I

want to turn you into a frog type.

261

:

Check this one out if you're looking for

a magical detective with sarcastic wit.

262

:

and a lazy approach to magic.

263

:

I think we can all relate to a

witch that would rather avoid the

264

:

heroics and just stay in bed all day.

265

:

And the last book that I have

for you guys today is Goddess

266

:

with a Blade by Lauren Dane.

267

:

This is the first book in

the series by the same name.

268

:

And our heroine Rowan is

basically unlike any other.

269

:

She is not just a vessel for the

Celtic goddess, Bridget, but she's

270

:

also a vampire hunter raised by

the leader of the vampire nation.

271

:

With her supernatural powers, she's

definitely a force to be reckoned with.

272

:

Ensuring that vampires are

adhering to an ancient treaty.

273

:

So when a series of gruesome

murders strikes Las Vegas,

274

:

Rowan goes on high alert.

275

:

The new scion in town is

arrogant and definitely powerful.

276

:

And Rowan is not shy to make sure

that he keeps his vampires in check.

277

:

But despite their constant clashes,

their undeniable chemistry and

278

:

sparks that fly cannot be ignored.

279

:

Now, as Rowan is trying to race

against the clock to stop this killer

280

:

so more women don't turn up dead,

she has to navigate this attraction

281

:

and feelings that she has for the

vampire Scion This is a great start

282

:

for a sexy urban fantasy series.

283

:

It's action packed.

284

:

It's such a fun read.

285

:

There's lots of laugh out loud moments.

286

:

And if you love strong heroines

steamy tension, and supernatural

287

:

intrigue, then definitely Rowan's

Adventures in Goddess with a Blade

288

:

are going to be your next must read.

289

:

So those are all the books

that I have for you guys today.

290

:

I hope that you found something

that you want to dive into.

291

:

All of these are series as well, so

once you pick one up, you can just

292

:

binge through the rest of them.

293

:

I can highly recommend that you do

that too and if you've never picked

294

:

up a funny urban fantasy, you're

totally missing out and I think you

295

:

need to rectify that immediately.

296

:

I would also love to know which

ones are your favorites that

297

:

I didn't include on this list.

298

:

And I have even more recommendations

of this genre on the blog, so I

299

:

will definitely leave a link to

our blog post with more funny

300

urban fantasy recommendations
