In a first to file system, as most countries including the US have, speed to file is of the essence. You probably need less detail than you think to qualify for a patent. Describing the idea is what counts. You don't even have to have a working prototype to get a patent. In Joshua's experience, it should take 6-12 months, with 9 being a good average, to go from idea conception to filing your patent application with the USPTO.
