Speaker:

We've been going through the Story of ExoduS, the second book in the Bible.

Speaker:

God's people, the Israelites, or they're also known as the Hebrews.

Speaker:

They're not in the land that God's going to give them, the land of CAnAaN.

Speaker:

They're in Egypt.

Speaker:

And the EGyPTIanS have been treating them

Speaker:

really badly, making them slaves, beating them up.

Speaker:

The egyptian king, Pharaoh, he thinks he's so great, he can do whatever he wants.

Speaker:

He thinks he's got the greatest power, he's got the greatest gods.

Speaker:

He even thinks he's a kind of God on earth.

Speaker:

So when Moses and Aaron turn up saying, the

Speaker:

God of the Hebrews says, let my people go, he's like, whoa, the God of the Hebrews?

Speaker:

Who's that? I don't know him.

Speaker:

And I don't have to listen to him.

Speaker:

I'm the powerful one.

Speaker:

Egypt is the most powerful country, not these silly Hebrews and their puny God.

Speaker:

And the Israelites kinda believe him.

Speaker:

They're like, ah, don't make pharaoh angry.

Speaker:

He'll hurt us more.

Speaker:

It's not like God can save us from him or

Speaker:

anything.

Speaker:

It's because they, the Israelites and

Speaker:

Egyptians and pharaoh, they don't know God.

Speaker:

They don't know how powerful he is.

Speaker:

They don't know how faithful to his people he is.

Speaker:

They don't know how much he cares about fairness, how angry he gets when people do

Speaker:

horrible things.

Speaker:

They don't know how committed he is to saving

Speaker:

his people.

Speaker:

They're about to find out.

Speaker:

God is about to show his awesome power to the world.

Speaker:

He's about to show all those other things to the world so that the Egyptians and pharaoh

Speaker:

and the Israelites and we can truly know him.

Speaker:

He's going to send ten mighty plagues, ten

Speaker:

signs of power, ten wonders that'll show who the real God is.

Speaker:

Get ready for our next episode of stories of a faithful God for kids.

Speaker:

At the end of our last episode, God had just shown that hes more powerful than the gods of

Speaker:

Egypt.

Speaker:

He turned aarons staff into a snake.

Speaker:

All the magicians who work for the egyptian gods also turned their staffs into snakes.

Speaker:

But gods snake swallowed all of theirs.

Speaker:

That was a tiny sign, but it should have been

Speaker:

enough for them to go, ah, we're in trouble here.

Speaker:

Maybe we should just, um, give them what they want.

Speaker:

But what God wants is to be known, and they don't know him properly yet.

Speaker:

And so he's made pharaoh stubborn to make sure he can show everyone who he is.

Speaker:

It's not like he's making pharaoh evil.

Speaker:

Pharaoh's already evil.

Speaker:

God's just not letting him escape what's coming.

Speaker:

It's time for plague number one.

Speaker:

It has to do with the Nile river.

Speaker:

The Nile is the longest river in the world, and it's the only reason Egypt can exist.

Speaker:

Egypt is a desert.

Speaker:

Except where the Nile runs, every year it

Speaker:

floods, and the water has something called silt in it.

Speaker:

Grains of broken up rock from the mountains that, when it gets into the soil, makes it

Speaker:

really fertile.

Speaker:

That means it's much easier to grow food

Speaker:

there.

Speaker:

So even today, if you look at a satellite

Speaker:

photo of Egypt, it's like desert.

Speaker:

Desert.

Speaker:

Desert.

Speaker:

Desert.

Speaker:

Whoa. It's really green.

Speaker:

What a great farm.

Speaker:

Hey, there's the river.

Speaker:

Oh, look.

Speaker:

Another beautiful farm.

Speaker:

Desert. Desert. Desert. Desert.

Speaker:

Desert.

Speaker:

The egyptians get their water to drink from the Nile.

Speaker:

They rely on the Nile for their food.

Speaker:

Lots of food means they can have lots of

Speaker:

people, which means bigger armies, which means more power.

Speaker:

In fact, they're one of, if not the most powerful country around.

Speaker:

So, let's see what God does to the Nile.

Speaker:

I'll read from Exodus, chapter seven, verse

Speaker:

14.

Speaker:

Then the Lord said to Moses, the king is being

Speaker:

stubborn.

Speaker:

He refuses to let the people go.

Speaker:

In the morning, the king will go out to the Nile river.

Speaker:

Go meet him by the edge of the river.

Speaker:

Take with you the walking stick that became a

Speaker:

snake.

Speaker:

Tell him this.

Speaker:

The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, sent me to you.

Speaker:

He said, let my people go worship me in the desert.

Speaker:

Until now, you have not listened.

Speaker:

This is what the Lord says.

Speaker:

This is how you will know that I am the Lord.

Speaker:

I will strike the water of the Nile river with

Speaker:

this stick in my hand, and the water will change into blood.

Speaker:

Then the fish of the Nile will die, and the river will begin to stink, and the Egyptians

Speaker:

will not be able to drink the water from the Nile.

Speaker:

The Lord said to Moses, tell Aaron to stretch the walking stick in his hand over the rivers,

Speaker:

canals, ponds and pools.

Speaker:

In Egypt, the water will become blood

Speaker:

everywhere in Egypt, there even will be blood in the wooden buckets and stone jars.

Speaker:

So gross, right? So powerful.

Speaker:

Did you hear God say, this is how you'll know that I am the Lord?

Speaker:

He turns the longest river in the world into blood.

Speaker:

Even the water that people have in their jars and pots turns into blood.

Speaker:

Who has that sort of power? Surely only the greatest God.

Speaker:

Why does the Lord start with the Nile? And why blood?

Speaker:

Well, like I said before, the Nile is the whole reason that Egypt's able to exist.

Speaker:

But there's more to it than that, actually.

Speaker:

You see, the Nile was treated like a God.

Speaker:

They had a God of the Nile.

Speaker:

Happy?

Speaker:

No, no, not happy.

Speaker:

Like, haha, I'm so happy.

Speaker:

Yay.

Speaker:

It's spelt H A p I. Happy was also known as

Speaker:

the lord of the fish.

Speaker:

Well, now it's like happy's river is put to

Speaker:

death.

Speaker:

And those fish that he's supposed to be lord

Speaker:

of, they all die.

Speaker:

The true Lord, the God of the Hebrews, is

Speaker:

showing who the real God is.

Speaker:

But there's even more to it than that.

Speaker:

Do you remember what the Egyptians did to the hebrew baby boys back around when Moses was

Speaker:

born? They wanted them dead, and so they threw them

Speaker:

into the river.

Speaker:

The river that was the source of life for the

Speaker:

Egyptians became the place of death for the Hebrews.

Speaker:

God was watching, and now he's saying, I'm angry.

Speaker:

This is just a small punishment for that evil that they did.

Speaker:

It isn't a full punishment.

Speaker:

A full punishment would be putting them to

Speaker:

death.

Speaker:

God kindly holds back from that to give them a

Speaker:

chance to learn who the real God is.

Speaker:

So in front of the king and all his officers,

Speaker:

Aaron hits the Nile with his staff and it turns to blood.

Speaker:

We read this in verse 21.

Speaker:

The fish of the Nile died, and the river began

Speaker:

to stink, so the Egyptians could not drink water from it.

Speaker:

Blood was everywhere in the land of Egypt.

Speaker:

There's no way anyone in Egypt can miss this.

Speaker:

Everyone sees it.

Speaker:

Everyone has to ask, who's in charge of this

Speaker:

water? Who has so much power over the nile and over

Speaker:

the God? Happy, do you know the blood in the river is a

Speaker:

sign of punishment from God.

Speaker:

God's punishing the Egyptians and their gods

Speaker:

for their sin, for their evil.

Speaker:

Normally they have water, and the water brings

Speaker:

life.

Speaker:

But instead they've got this blood which shows

Speaker:

death.

Speaker:

I wonder if you remember what happened not

Speaker:

long after Jesus died on the cross.

Speaker:

He was still on the cross, but the people

Speaker:

wanted to make sure that he really was dead.

Speaker:

And so one of the soldiers picked up a spear

Speaker:

and shoved it into his side.

Speaker:

And do you remember what came out?

Speaker:

Water and blood.

Speaker:

The symbol of life and the symbol of death.

Speaker:

Why would you have both symbols at the same time?

Speaker:

It's because Jesus death brought life.

Speaker:

The punishment that Jesus took meant that we

Speaker:

didn't have to be punished.

Speaker:

His death gives us eternal life when we put

Speaker:

our trust in him, turn away from our sin and ask to follow his way.

Speaker:

It's a great sign of God's salvation.

Speaker:

Back in Egypt, Pharaoh's magicians remember

Speaker:

them.

Speaker:

They used their tricks and do the same thing

Speaker:

of turning some water into blood.

Speaker:

And so Pharaoh thinks, this is fine.

Speaker:

I don't have to listen to this God.

Speaker:

Verse 22 says, so.

Speaker:

The king was stubborn and refused to listen to Moses and Aaron.

Speaker:

This happened just as the Lord had said.

Speaker:

The king turned and went into his palace.

Speaker:

He ignored what Moses and Aaron had done.

Speaker:

While he's off in a huff thinking, yeah,

Speaker:

everything's fine.

Speaker:

His people are really struggling.

Speaker:

They need water to survive.

Speaker:

They don't have fancy taps and showers and

Speaker:

flushing toilets.

Speaker:

All they have is the water from the river and

Speaker:

the creeks that flow out from it and the canals that flow out from it.

Speaker:

Verse 24 says the Egyptians could not drink the water from the Nile, so all of them dug

Speaker:

along the bank of the river.

Speaker:

They were looking for water to drink.

Speaker:

That's the first of the ten plagues, the ten signs to show who the real Lord is.

Speaker:

If God started so powerfully, so amazingly, what's he gonna do next?

Speaker:

Well, that's a story for next time.
