Shownotes

The personal, professional and academic achievements of our guest, Darlene Keeper, are impressive on their own, but are even more so when they are put into the context of where she started. Darlene grew up in foster care, which she has bravely shared about on CBC’s Unreserved and the Broken Home podcast, amplifying her story as a way to advocate for children and youth still in the system. Darlene knows firsthand the trauma and abuse experienced by kids in care and she has dedicated her life to fixing this broken system.

Darlene has worked extensively with children and youth. In her work at Marymound as a Youth Practitioner, she works directly with youth in care and is known as someone who is able to make connections with the harder to reach kids. She has also worked as a Support Worker, which allowed her to again work with kids in care, advocating for the youth she worked tirelessly along the way. Darlene is a role model who is capable of both making personal connections to the young people lucky enough to meet her, but also to amplify their voices, promoting changes in their lives and the lives of other kids like them.

Through this episode, she invites us into the space of courage to unapologetically own our narratives.
