Episode 6 (Truth)

I invited two graduating valedictorians to the show. They would have been getting ready to graduate this week, but instead, due to the COVID-19 pandemic they are waiting and holding on with the hope to have some worthy closer to their high school careers. We host Rhiannon Briggs and Nathan Eng in a remote interview to help shine some light on what being a senior in the class of 2020 is like. Both Rhiannon and Nathan are full IB diploma graduates at the top of their class. Rhiannon will be attending Santa Clara University and currently lives in Beaverton Oregon with her mom, dad, and younger brother. Nathan will be attending the University of Oregon and currently lives in Beaverton Oregon with his mom, dad, and two little sisters. This interview will remind you all exactly why teachers are struggling with being away from our students, toward the end of the episode Rhiannon and Nathan will both share a letter that they have written to all graduating seniors of 2020.

Believing in others (truth)

The tether system.

  • Push them out of their comfort zone even if it pulls you out of yours.
  • The tether is a safety cord, because we all will fail.
  • The tether is a reminder during our struggle, a reminder that there is support and a safety net.

Use Truth to Protect a Purposeful Ego

  • Nutrient rich vs empty calories
  • It’s saying “you can, and here is why.”
  • Encouragement that is genuine
  • Grace with Truth
  • Try to understand what they need to hear, when they need to hear it.

Don’t be their critic be their champion

  • There is something inside all of us that wants everyone around us to need us.
  • Envy and jealousy is human (Schadenfreude) Princeton study: pleasure derived by others misfortune.

As a 2020 senior, how do you think this time, this challenge, will define or impact you?

Reading of the letters:

Rhiannon & Nathan read a letter they wrote to all graduating seniors of 2020.
