In past episodes of the podcast - I've spoken about freedom, working for yourself, and autonomy. And although this episode isn't about those three topics - I do want to give kudos to all of them.
Other than a select couple of days - for the last 6 weeks I've been in the grips of what has been THE worst cold I've ever had. And since I've been around for over 5 decades - that's a pretty good record to beat. It's not been a fun ride - but, knock on wood - I do think the worst is behind me.
But without the previously mentioned freedom, working for myself, and autonomy - there's absolutely NO way I could have managed to keep in good standing within a traditional job. I without a doubt would have burned through ALL my sick days, vacation time, and at the very least would have had to have applied for and been accepted to take part in some sort of short-term disability. Long story short - I would have exhausted almost all available time for the entire year or more in one shot. And that wouldn't have bode well for the remainder of the remaining year. So once again - I'm here to scream from the rooftops to get your entrepreneurial juices flowing and get something in place to go from some time to part-time to full-time and move from a W2 Life to that of a 1099 one. The benefits of doing so are too numerous to mention!
And with all that said - our episode today is all about engagement.
I always speak about the importance of putting the SOCIAL back into Social Media. On the same note, we need to do the exact same thing with traditional communication. Both things require one overwhelming action - ENGAGEMENT. In the simplest of terms, beyond the literal definition of engaging or being engaged - engagement is participating, taking part, sharing, and partaking. It's jumping headfirst into the engagement you're in at the moment with TRUE intentions of being invested in what you're being told. It's turning off your favorite radio station - WIIFM (What's In It For Me?) and being receptive.
Now with a podcast named Market YOU First - people might think it leans to that WIIFM side of things. But, it's in the marketing of YOU and not what you sell - and that's pretty much where the YOU part of it starts to die down. I tell you this because if you've been around for any amount of time whatsoever - you've probably heard the phrase, "People don't care what you know until they know that you care." So, on the same topic - when speaking to people - try to analyze and sympathize BEFORE forming a judgment or opinion. Case in point - you might be one of the most awesome and caring people on the planet. But if someone spoke to you while you were sick, grieving, mad, concerned, and/or in another mood-altering state - would they still find you to be awesome and caring? Asking yourself, "What's going on with this person?" and even exploring it wi
