Shownotes

You're almost ready to start talking with editors. Over the past few episodes, you've gone through the process of clarifying the goal you're shooting for and any gaps that might exist. You've identified some things you'd like an editor to help you with and even started prioritizing things.

But before you start looking for an editor, manager, or producer, there are three things I think you should consider. We're going to cover the first one this week.

What will you focus on next?

Or put another way, what will you do with all your free time?

While this might seem like a "throwaway" question, it's incredibly important because it not only helps you identify the value of bringing a podcast editor, manager, or producer into your production, but it also helps you actually maintain your focus as you navigate the transition you're about to go through.

Bryan Entzminger:

In all of the time that you've spent thinking about finding and bringing on the very best podcast

Bryan Entzminger:

editor, manager, or producer for you, have you ever stopped to consider and decide what you're going to focus on next?

Bryan Entzminger:

Believe it or not, it's incredibly easy to lose sight of what's most important.

Bryan Entzminger:

When you're in the middle of a transition and believe me bringing an editor on is a transition.

Bryan Entzminger:

So it's important to be clear on this now so that you don't make a misstep later.

Bryan Entzminger:

Welcome to Hiring a Podcast Editor.

Bryan Entzminger:

My name is Bryan Entzminger.

Bryan Entzminger:

Bryan Entzminger:

one, we're going to help you

Bryan Entzminger:

get clarity on what you really want before you start connecting with editors and then provide

Bryan Entzminger:

you with the tools to make the right decision for yourself.

Bryan Entzminger:

This show is sponsored by TopTierAudio.com, where we provide podcast production services for

Bryan Entzminger:

Be sure to stick around to the end, and I'll tell you how you can get a free tool to help you organize

Bryan Entzminger:

your thoughts and make sure you don't miss anything.

Bryan Entzminger:

Congratulations.

Bryan Entzminger:

You've gone through the process of getting clear on what you're looking for in an editor,

Bryan Entzminger:

and that actually sets you up pretty well.

Bryan Entzminger:

A lot of people don't do that.

Bryan Entzminger:

And I would say that you're probably almost ready to start talking with editors over the past few episodes.

Bryan Entzminger:

You've gone through the process of clarifying the goal that you're shooting for.

Bryan Entzminger:

You've highlighted some gaps that might exist.

Bryan Entzminger:

You've also identified some things that you'd like to have an editor or a producer or a podcast manager help you.

Bryan Entzminger:

And you've even started prioritizing things, but before you start going out to find that best editor, that manager,

Bryan Entzminger:

that producer, there are three things I think you should

Bryan Entzminger:

consider.

Bryan Entzminger:

We're going to cover the

Bryan Entzminger:

first one in this episode, and then we'll cover the other two in the next two episodes.

Bryan Entzminger:

The

Bryan Entzminger:

first one I'm going to ask you to

Bryan Entzminger:

consider is.

Bryan Entzminger:

What will you focus on next or put another way?

Bryan Entzminger:

What are you going to do with all

Bryan Entzminger:

your free time?

Bryan Entzminger:

Now I realize, say that kind of jokingly, because there may not be a lot of free time, but you will

Bryan Entzminger:

be getting back some portion of your time and some portion of your focus and that kind of stuff.

Bryan Entzminger:

And if you've been taking notes, as we've been going along, you may already have a pretty good idea.

Bryan Entzminger:

There is a resource available for you at HireAPodcastEditor.com/15questions.

Bryan Entzminger:

If you've been filling that out.

Bryan Entzminger:

That's great.

Bryan Entzminger:

You may actually have a really good idea what you're looking for now.

Bryan Entzminger:

I do have some other suggestions I'm going to give you, but I would suggest that the first thing you do

Bryan Entzminger:

is consider the things you've already done, because

Bryan Entzminger:

those are going to be the most

Bryan Entzminger:

specific to your needs, to what you're looking for, because that.

Bryan Entzminger:

The most important

Bryan Entzminger:

part, I'm going to provide some

Bryan Entzminger:

ideas and some things to think about, but what's really important is

Bryan Entzminger:

that what you do is what's aligned best for you.

Bryan Entzminger:

I will say the first thing I suggest that you focus on as you've been bringing on an editor.

Bryan Entzminger:

Is just getting that working relationship up and running.

Bryan Entzminger:

Sometimes it can take a little bit of time to learn how to communicate well with each

Bryan Entzminger:

other and to work well with each other.

Bryan Entzminger:

You've both been saying probably some words back and forth about what you're looking for and

Bryan Entzminger:

what they give and all of that kind of stuff.

Bryan Entzminger:

But it can take a little bit of time to make sure that those words can translate into concrete actions

Bryan Entzminger:

that deliver the result that you're looking for.

Bryan Entzminger:

So I would suggest that you make.

Bryan Entzminger:

One of the one to three

Bryan Entzminger:

things you're going to focus on

Bryan Entzminger:

first.

Bryan Entzminger:

Hi, there, I'm popping in for just a second to tell you about boom caster.

Bryan Entzminger:

If you're going to be recording your podcast while streaming live, either with a co-host or with guests or something like

Bryan Entzminger:

that, you're going to need a service

Bryan Entzminger:

that does that and gives you high quality recordings and boom caster is a great service for that.

Bryan Entzminger:

They offer an excellent live stream experience.

Bryan Entzminger:

And super high quality audio and video recordings.

Bryan Entzminger:

So later you can edit those into your final podcast episode.

Bryan Entzminger:

You can find them@boomcaster.com or click the link in the episode notes.

Bryan Entzminger:

If you use that, you'll also get a discount on your purchase and your purchase will benefit the show.

Bryan Entzminger:

So I'd really appreciate that.

Bryan Entzminger:

Boom caster is what I recommend for you to capture those great recordings for your podcast.

Bryan Entzminger:

After that I would suggest that you focus on either something that will move you toward your ideal future.

Bryan Entzminger:

What we defined in episode number two, which was the magic wand question for your podcast, or maybe something that's been kind

Bryan Entzminger:

of falling off your plate, or hasn't been getting the attention you'd like, which is what we talked about in episode five.

Bryan Entzminger:

And you can choose something from that list.

Bryan Entzminger:

And as you think about this, just think.

Bryan Entzminger:

In that first say 30, 60 days, 90 days, something like that.

Bryan Entzminger:

What would you want to focus on after you've been bringing that editor to, to work with you now?

Bryan Entzminger:

It's perfectly okay.

Bryan Entzminger:

If the thing you want to focus on is maybe getting some of your relationships, right.

Bryan Entzminger:

As a podcast, or sometimes our relationships can be damaged, right?

Bryan Entzminger:

So sometimes we take time from other relationships from friendships, maybe even time from family or.

Bryan Entzminger:

Building a business or some of those kinds of things.

Bryan Entzminger:

So as you think about this, don't feel constrained to only do the things that move your podcast forward.

Bryan Entzminger:

Think about the things that are important to you and the future that you're wanting to experience.

Bryan Entzminger:

Pick those one to three things that you think will bring you closer to that.

Bryan Entzminger:

Now, why do I say one to three?

Bryan Entzminger:

Well, the answer is pretty simple and maybe it doesn't apply to you.

Bryan Entzminger:

But what I find for myself is that when I pick too many things to focus on nothing gets the focus or.

Bryan Entzminger:

I'm basically just lying to myself.

Bryan Entzminger:

I

Bryan Entzminger:

say, I'm going to do these

Bryan Entzminger:

five or seven or 29 different things, whatever the number is.

Bryan Entzminger:

And the reality is I'm

Bryan Entzminger:

probably going to pick one

Bryan Entzminger:

or two of those that are

Bryan Entzminger:

actually going to get some

Bryan Entzminger:

attention anyway.

Bryan Entzminger:

And the rest of the time, I'll just feel really bad about all the things that didn't get my attention.

Bryan Entzminger:

So I would suggest that you choose something that's right for you.

Bryan Entzminger:

One to three is what I, I would try to do.

Bryan Entzminger:

That's what I would recommend if 19 is the right answer for you, then pick 19, but pick that.

Bryan Entzminger:

One thing or those few things that you want to focus on, because that will help you maintain your

Bryan Entzminger:

focus as you start going through this transition.

Bryan Entzminger:

Because like I said, it is really easy to lose sight of the things that are so important to us

Bryan Entzminger:

when we're going through a transition like this.

Bryan Entzminger:

And it will also start to help you understand the value that your editor is bringing.

Bryan Entzminger:

We've talked about the value that an editor brings or a podcast manager and things like focus and time back.

Bryan Entzminger:

Expertise, all that kind of stuff.

Bryan Entzminger:

This is another thing that they're bringing is your ability to focus on these things, to help move

Bryan Entzminger:

your show or your business or your relationships or whatever it is that you're wanting to focus on forward.

Bryan Entzminger:

When you pick those things, make sure you note them in the download.

Bryan Entzminger:

You can find that at HireAPodcastEditor.com/15questions.

Bryan Entzminger:

And that way, when you start talking to an editor, you can have these things in the back of your mind.

Bryan Entzminger:

Then once you've found the right person, you can start using these things to go.

Bryan Entzminger:

Okay, now that I've got this block of time, that used to.

Bryan Entzminger:

For editing, what should I do with it?

Bryan Entzminger:

Oh yeah.

Bryan Entzminger:

I've got a list of things that I'm going to focus on.

Bryan Entzminger:

So it'll help you with that.

Bryan Entzminger:

So write that down.

Bryan Entzminger:

You'll have that available for you when it's time.

Bryan Entzminger:

Next

Bryan Entzminger:

time.

Bryan Entzminger:

We're going to talk about

Bryan Entzminger:

taking this one step further

Bryan Entzminger:

and we're going to create a

Bryan Entzminger:

small framework that's built specifically for you and your priorities to

Bryan Entzminger:

help you choose the right editor for you.

Bryan Entzminger:

Make sure you don't miss it.
