Scripture For Today:

Philippians 1:3

“In all of my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy.”

Benefits of Praying in the Spirit pt 1

We have been having an awesome time these last dozen or sessions as we have been studying extensively on the Holy Spirit and Holy Spirit led prayer.  I want to continue this discussion, looking at what the Apostle Paul said about prayer.

One of the most important ways the Holy Spirit helps us is by giving us utterances as we pray in tongues. Some people contact me and say it is only our mind coming up with these utterances. But as we have already seen, that just is not true at all. It may be true for that person that claims to only be using their mind, but it is not what scripture tells us.

Let’s look at what the Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 8:26:

“Likewise, the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought; but the Spirit (Himself) makes intercession for us with groanings that cannot be uttered.”

We learned before, that the literal Greek says the Spirit makes intercession for us “with groanings that cannot be uttered with articulate speech.”

Let’s look at 1 Corinthians 14:2:

“For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh NOT TO MAN, but UNTO GOD: for no man understands him; howbeit in the Spirit, he speaketh mysteries.”

Moffatt’s translation says, “he that speaks in an unknown tongue is talking of divine secrets in the Spirit.”

Then, in 1 Corinthians 14:!4, Paul says:

“For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.”

The Amplified Bible say, of 1 Corinthians 14:!4:

“For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit, by the Holy Spirit within me, prays, but my mind is unproductive – bears  no fruit and helps nobody.”

Paul was simply saying in this verse, that when the believer prays in tongues, it is his or her spirit praying, not his or her understanding or mind doing the praying. That means praying in other tongues is a spiritual exercise, not a mental exercise. Amen!
